367. Who Is Better (1)
November 02, 2022
‘To see this kind of acting in Hollywood, the world’s best…’
It’s a shame.
I have no ill feelings towards Raymond, but I couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed.
‘They clearly said Raymond was a top actor.’
So it makes sense that he was able to take on the character of Black, who is almost an American icon, despite still being in his mid-thirties.
Moreover, this Raymond version of the Black series has been a great success up to Part 2.
Since it is originally a highly anticipated work, it is a situation where doing well is just breaking even.
It is quite difficult for a reboot series to be an even bigger hit than the previous one.
Of course, the trilogy is not completely over yet, so the evaluation will be completely determined by this last Part 3.
But anyway, it is true that the first two parts were a huge success.
‘But why am I so disappointed?’
To be a little more specific…….
It’s like Raymond, who plays Black, is clumsily imitating Black – a very subtle state.
‘Well, the appearance is exactly Black, so…….’
Raymond trying to play Black is showing in Black.
Or it seems like Raymond can’t beat Black.
Neither is good.
It is not a positive direction for an actor to be swayed by a role or not to perfectly digest the role.
Is that why?
“Cut!”
As expected, a sharp cut sound echoed through the set.
“Let’s take a break.”
At Jonas Ben’s words, the staff stopped all at once.
The people who had been concentrating suddenly lost strength in their shoulders.
“Was it bad?”
Raymond, who approached, asked.
“Hmm. It’s not bad… I think we should go again.”
“Wow. That’s the worst result. Are you saying everything is so messed up that you don’t know what’s wrong?”
“No, it can’t be that messed up, can it? But….”
Jonas said hastily.
Of course, it wasn’t *that* bad.
Because Raymond has such high-level acting skills, it would have looked good to most people.
But it was a little different for Jonas, who already knew how great an actor Raymond was.
He already knew how wonderful his acting was, so it stood out even more.
“But you’re saying it’s a shame to give the okay. I understand. Hmm. There shouldn’t be any disappointing scenes.”
He readily agreed to retake.
But as that was repeated several times, the atmosphere began to stiffen little by little.
‘That’s strange.’
Yeonwoo recalled the status window that had been released thanks to the handshake he had once had.

*You cannot harvest lifespan from this person at this time.
‘The condition is a little different from last time?’
The fact that he was in charge of the OST [Original Soundtrack] and brought Gabriel to the set.
Those two things were impressive, and it jumped from the 40 percent range to the 60 percent range.
And there was one more thing that stood out.
‘What’s going on with the emotional state?’
According to the script that I memorized, today’s filming is definitely not a happy atmosphere.
‘Well… There’s also the saying that the actor’s true self and the actor’s performance are separate.’
Just because an actor plays a psychopath killer doesn’t mean the actor *is* a psychopath.
Just because he appears as a regular adulterer in a 막장 [makjang – Korean slang for over-the-top, absurd drama] morning drama doesn’t mean that the actor’s morality is 막장.
Yeonwoo preferred to be assimilated into the characters in the play.
But that doesn’t mean that actors who don’t are wrong.
“He’s not the type to be so confused. What’s wrong?”
Gabriel muttered next to him.
Gabriel is returning to the screen after a long time.
As the period of time he had been away from the field was so long.
Gabriel requested to attend the filming set to director Jonas Ben.
Like Yeonwoo, it was because he wanted to quickly get used to the atmosphere of the set.
-Of course, welcome!
Thanks to this, two more people were added to the filming staff, which had been minimized due to Raymond.
“Yeonwoo, what do you think is the problem?”
Yeonwoo looked at Gabriel instead of answering.
“Why… why? Why are you looking at me like that…?”
“No, well. I just thought it was admirable.”
“Admirable…?”
“You said he’s the best top star in the world?”
Gabriel’s face flushed.
“Wh-……! Why are you bringing up such old stories?!”
“We haven’t even been together for a year, so it’s not an old story.”
“Yes, you told me to listen to other people’s words!”
“That’s why I said it was admirable.”
“Th-that’s right? If so, then what…….”
Suddenly, he shrinks back and becomes quiet again.
I think I heard a 푸시식 [pusisik – Korean onomatopoeia for deflating] sound…?
“Anyway… What do you think is the problem? I don’t see any problems, and Jonas isn’t the type of director to just unilaterally tell you to reshoot, is he?”
Filming is also done by people.
It shouldn’t be, but sometimes there are some directors who unilaterally act out of spite.
Should I call it a kind of power struggle?
But this situation was definitely not a wasteful power struggle.
Yeonwoo was a little doubtful about the situation.
‘Why does a world-class top actor keep making these NGs [No Good takes]? Kwon Seonghyun didn’t do that.’
A question arises here.
Is the top actor in Korea better?
Or is the top actor in Hollywood better?
-Isn’t Hollywood 넘사 [ 넘을 수 없는 사벽 (neomeul su eomneun sabyuk) – Korean slang meaning ‘an insurmountable wall’] because they play in different waters?
-There are more than one or two cases of people who did well in Korea and then failed after going to Hollywood, so of course it’s Hollywood.
Generally, this is probably the answer you will get.
Why?
This is not just a matter of individual abilities, but also a matter of the environment in which they belong.
‘There are limits in Korea.’
‘It is difficult to draw more sympathy from people around the world due to cultural differences.’
‘If you think about it logically, if Korea is more amazing, foreign actors would come to our country rather than going to Hollywood.’
The size of the scale poured into the content.
Or the difference in policies and perspectives on cultural projects.
Besides that, people’s mindset and awareness of dramas, movies, and entertainment beyond them.
etc.
There are many reasons, so it is a very complex problem.
If you think about it, there are more than one or two things to consider even in this simple question of ‘Who is better?’
Of course.
‘If it were Kwon Seonghyun, he would have just breezed through this scene.’
It didn’t apply to Yeonwoo.
It wasn’t because the arm bends inward [a Korean idiom meaning biased towards one’s own]!
Yeonwoo prided himself on having a fairly objective perspective.
‘If you only look at the stats in the status window, they seem similar, so why is there such a difference?’
If you only look at the four major S-class stats that Raymond Taylor has.
‘How many did Kwon Seonghyun have? I think it was five.’
But Kwon Seonghyun had almost no NGs except for the NGs he intentionally made.
Even if there was an NG, it didn’t come out more than three times in the same scene.
I honestly had some expectations because it was the first time I saw and learned it.
Not a little, but a lot?
‘It’s the first time I’ve seen an actor with similar abilities to Kwon Seonghyun, so…….’
But the result is a bit ambiguous.
‘There shouldn’t be any problems if you only look at the stats… This is like…….’
What should I say?
It’s like it’s not a problem with the stats, but a problem with the person using them?
Yeonwoo soon realized the difference without difficulty.
‘It’s useless no matter how good the stats are if the person using them is unskilled…?’
Pearls before swine.
To put it extremely, it would probably feel like this.
‘As expected, being world-famous doesn’t necessarily mean you’re the best.’
Heungseon Daewongun [a Korean historical figure known for his isolationist policies], who had been sleeping inside Yeonwoo for a long time, stretched.
Is it now?
Is this the time for me to get up!
Anyway, is it thanks to that?
One of the prejudices that Yeonwoo had fell off.
‘This is just a place where people live anyway….’
Holly wood.
This place where countless stars gather and wage war.
I forgot for a while because of its reputation, but this is also a place where people live.
However, the reason why actors who are not the existing ‘mainstream’ actors cannot become as famous as the mainstream is……
‘…I feel like the reasons why I have to keep succeeding in missions are increasing. Is it just my imagination?’
[We have discovered a huge negative view that is eating away at this world!]
At this point, I’m curious.
What do the people up there know to give me these missions?
‘Since it’s a mission that came about in Hollywood, if you look at it narrowly, it seems like it’s telling me to change the industry’s perception and create my own place…….’
If you think about it broadly, it’s not just about that.
Yeonwoo had repeatedly realized the power of entertainers and artists, as well as the mass media.
Not only in Korea but also overseas.
The most obvious example is Dream Walker, isn’t it?
“Sigh. What should I do?”
A voice full of anguish awakened the mind that had been lost in thought for a moment.
“What is it?”
“That’s… Ray is having such a hard time, and I’m wondering if I’m being too greedy.”
Yeonwoo was sure.
He’s scared right now.
“Are you scared?”
“……No?! Why would I be scared?”
The startled look was obvious.
“That’s right. There’s no way the great Gabriel would be scared just because he saw a few NGs.”
“Th-th-th-that’s right. Um. That’s right. Why would I be scared?!”
Yeonwoo decided to reassure Gabriel at this point.
‘If he gets scared and runs away, the mission will fail, so that’s a problem.’
It’s okay to leave the mission unattended, but it’s a different story if the target loses motivation and fails.
“When you’re acting, just focus on the acting. Then you won’t be scared.”
“Isn’t that too obvious?”
The idea that an actor should be immersed in acting is a very fundamental story.
“Sometimes, you can’t do such obvious things.”
“So you’re saying Ray isn’t concentrating right now?”
Indeed, Gabriel was quick to understand.
In the first place, Gabriel is not bad at acting.
No, he’s probably on the better side.
He wouldn’t be able to captivate all of North America with just his looks.
‘You have to say that he gave up acting because of others [external factors].’
It’s because of various unfortunate accidents.
“It looks fine to me… Does it look a little different to you, Yeonwoo?”
“Yes, well….”
Answering will help the young seed that has just started to walk.
‘Raising a child is this difficult.’
I haven’t even gotten married yet, but I didn’t know I would feel the difficulty of raising children so early.
“Do you remember Raymond’s expression?”
“Expression? Are you talking about when he’s acting?”
“Do you remember how Raymond’s expression changed?”
“Well…?”
Gabriel tilted his head as if he couldn’t get a sense of it.
‘I have to spoon-feed him.’
“If we go into filming this time, you’ll know if you carefully check his expression.”
“But if there was something wrong with his facial expressions, wouldn’t Jonas have already said something?”
“It’s not that there’s a problem with the expression itself.”
‘The problem is the timing.’
Yeonwoo slowly explained what he had seen.
Gabriel’s expression after hearing the whole story was a sight to behold.
“How did you figure that out? You can see that subtle difference?”
It is possible because you can see what others cannot see.
Of course, Yeonwoo’s ability was to combine the visible clues and get the answer itself.
“That’s a very interesting story.”
A voice suddenly cut in.
“Can I hear that story in detail too?”
The protagonist who had been making inexplicable NGs one after another.
It was Raymond Taylor.
