Ep. 34
She was definitely smiling, but it wasn’t a genuine smile. Not just me, but even my friends were frozen, speechless in this situation.
I wondered how she’d gotten here, but it wasn’t the right moment to ask.
Her overwhelming presence instantly silenced the lively atmosphere. The sudden shift made some nearby customers glance over. I faintly heard a soft exclamation, like ‘Wow-‘.
Hee-na’s beauty is truly exceptional.
I was even more anxious because of Su-hwang’s hunting comment and the conversation I’d unintentionally (?) cut off.
Cold sweat dampened my back, just like at home. Hee-na, still smiling, looked to my side instead of at me and spoke.
“You must be Yeon-hoo’s friends, right? Hello?”
“Oh… yes, hello.”
Su-hwang, closest to me, responded on behalf of everyone, and the others nodded slightly.
“Could I talk to Yeon-hoo for a moment?”
“Yes, of course.”
“Oh, and I didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but…”
Hee-na continued, exuding an aura so cold it could freeze water.
Her eyes were definitely smiling.
“You know you can’t hit on Yeon-hoo, right?”
She heard it! I was relieved she seemed to know I hadn’t started it.
“…It was just a joke. We were actually planning to go to the valley.”
“That’s a relief.”
“Hehe…”
Su-hwang shrank under her gaze, making his large build seem useless. He couldn’t withstand it any longer.
You weakling, you should have held out longer! I hadn’t even thought of an excuse yet!
I cursed inwardly, remaining motionless, my mouth shut like a prisoner awaiting a death sentence. Then, Hee-na’s gaze returned to me.
My mouth felt dry, but I couldn’t stay silent. I had done something wrong.
“Hey, Hee-na?”
“Yes?”
Fortunately—or maybe not—her response didn’t seem as icy as when she looked at my friends.
Encouraged, I stammered out an excuse.
“I’m sorry, I… I was so focused on the game that I forgot to check my phone…”
“Yeah.”
“I usually check it once in a while, but today I was just… too engrossed in it…”
“Yeah.”
“You know how it’s hard to stop in the middle when you’re really into something, right? Anything.”
“Yeah.”
“Gaming is a disease, after all… I’m sorry.”
I couldn’t make any more pathetic excuses to Hee-na, who kept replying with short answers. Honestly, I hadn’t replied because I was playing the game, even though I’d had the chance earlier.
I won’t provoke her with unnecessary words. I’ll be quiet.
-Squeak
“Yeon-hoo.”
She slightly turned the empty gaming chair to my right, sat down, and quietly called my name.
I didn’t make any more clumsy remarks and listened.
“I’m not angry.”
“…Yeah, I know.”
Even if I asked any customer in the PC cafe, they’d probably say she looked angry—but since Hee-na said she wasn’t, I decided to believe her.
“I was just… so worried because you weren’t replying. I wondered if something had happened.”
“I’m sorry. I could have replied to your text quickly…”
“No. It can happen when you’re hanging out with friends.”
Hee-na’s face clouded over, and my heart felt torn with guilt.
I should have replied to Hee-na quickly instead of ruining the whole day playing games.
I blamed my foolish self from a few hours ago.
To sadden this kind girlfriend who tries to defend my actions rather than blaming me!
Hee-na surely wouldn’t say anything more about what happened today…
“Of course, you promised to text me whenever you had time…”
“……”
Oh?
“I trusted those words completely and was looking at my phone all day…”
“…”
“I was worried all day, wondering if you went outside after the game and had an accident, but it’s not because of you.”
“……”
“It’s just because I worry a lot. You know my heart, right?”
“…….Yeah…”
“You know, but you were talking about hitting on girls with your friends?”
“No, I tried to stop them..”
“So, is that why you didn’t put sunscreen on me properly back then? Because you were looking at other girls?”
“You know that’s not true, right?”
“I know. I was just saying it.”
“…That’s, that’s a relief.”
“But you still didn’t text me.”
“……”
Her words stabbed my conscience mercilessly, and I hung my head.
I had no excuses.
A moment of silence followed. I was looking down, and Hee-na was sitting demurely in her chair.
Perhaps because of us, the surrounding area was almost silent. It wasn’t very crowded, but I felt like the customers thought it was a fun situation and were secretly listening.
I would have done the same.
Unable to bear the silence and anxiety, I wondered if I should apologize again. Then, Hee-na grabbed my face with both hands and lifted it.
Meeting her eyes, Hee-na offered forgiveness first.
“You’ll reply from now on, right?”
“Yeah. I will. I’m really sorry.”
I quickly agreed and apologized again.
Hee-na’s eyes softened a little. At the same time, she continued in a gentler tone.
“Then that’s okay. Can you give me your phone for a moment instead?”
“Phone? Um… here.”
It was sudden, but I handed over my phone without much thought. I had nothing to hide, and Hee-na often used my phone, so she knew most of what was on it.
As soon as she had my phone, she started installing something. I didn’t stop her, assuming she wouldn’t install anything strange, and watched.
The download was quick, probably because it wasn’t a large file. Afterward, she used her phone and mine simultaneously for a while, then returned it to me.
What did she install?
“What did you install?”
“Yeah. A couple app.”
“A couple app?”
“It’s something that lets us check each other’s location. I was so worried when I couldn’t contact you today… Is that okay…?”
“Ah, of course. If it’s something like that, it’s fine.”
I still felt sorry, and since my movements were so obvious, it wouldn’t be a problem if Hee-na knew a little about them.
If it reduced her worries, I’d even ask her to do it. Besides, I could also know when and where Hee-na was.
When I readily agreed, Hee-na’s smile finally returned completely.
I was overwhelmed by her pure heart, worrying so much just because she couldn’t reach me for a while, and wanting to install such an app because of it.
Now that Hee-na’s anger had somewhat subsided, I wanted to satisfy my curiosity.
“But how did you know I was here?”
“Oh~? I heard it from your mom?”
“…From Mom? You contact Mom?”
Why was I only finding out now that my mom and my girlfriend were in contact every day? More than that.
“Is it not uncomfortable?”
“What’s uncomfortable about it? I ask her first if it’s okay for me to do it often.”
“I see…”
Is it normal for my girlfriend to be texting my mom every day?
I don’t know. I just couldn’t think of anything other than to go with it if Hee-na was okay with it.
Let’s move on from this issue. It doesn’t matter if Hee-na likes it.
After hearing that, I glanced back and made eye contact with my friends, who had been subtly watching us.
Since we’d seen each other anyway, I might as well introduce them.
“Hee-na, is it okay to say hi to my friends?”
“Yeah! Oh, I greeted them politely because it was the first time, but is it okay if I speak casually?”
Hee-na looked behind me, and the four single guys nodded without hesitation.
They were so quiet when I was getting roasted, but they must have felt that Hee-na’s anger had subsided.
“Of course, it’s okay! I’m Kim Su-hwang and…”
“No need for self-introductions. This is Lee Hee-na. You guys have seen my profile picture a lot, so you know, right? And from right next to me here, there’s Kim Su-hwang, Shin Eui-hyun, Jung Yoon-sung, and Lee Hyun-woo. Yoon-sung, you said you saw her briefly last time, right?”
I cut off the guy who was trying to drag it out and finished the introduction simply. No need for further investigations since we wouldn’t be seeing each other that often anyway.
Besides, Hee-na probably didn’t have much interest in them, and my friends wouldn’t hit on Hee-na, but I didn’t want them to have too many conversations.
Because I’m jealous.
“Hello~”
Hee-na waved slightly and greeted them once more after my short introduction. Kim Su-hwang, who I’d cut off, pouted for a moment but nodded obediently. The other guys did the same.
Anyway, we exchanged greetings, but the atmosphere was awkward.
Even though they were somewhat familiar with her thanks to the profile picture, it was the first time they’d really seen her in person. Besides, a friend’s girlfriend is a subtle relationship to treat too comfortably.
“Can you call a few of your friends and go to the valley together?”
To break the ice, I brought up the idea from earlier.
Hee-na tilted her head.
“Friends?”
“Yeah. There’s a valley near Eui-hyun’s relative’s house, and it’s not crowded, so it’s good to hang out. If it’s okay, I was wondering if you could call your friends and go together.”
“Ah~ but what to do? Most of them have academies [private tutoring centers] or private lessons, so it’ll probably be hard to make time.”
“Is that so?”
“Yeah. And it might be awkward to go with people who aren’t close. Sorry.”
“No, no need to be sorry. I was just asking. And even if we go, it’s just for one night, but I think I’ll miss you…”
“Really?”
It was embarrassing to say that with my friends behind me, but Hee-na really liked it when I told her things directly, so I revealed my true feelings.
As expected, Hee-na’s eyes lit up and she grabbed my hand. Enjoying the warmth from her small hand, I added more words.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t text you today either, but I was going to see you in the evening.”
“I was thinking of coming to see you too… We’re on the same wavelength?”
“Looks like it.”
We smiled at each other.
What’s the point of games and friends? Hee-na is all I need.
Holding her hand tightly, I heard grumbling from behind.
“Just go on a date…”
—
In the end, it really came out. [They left the PC cafe.]
Hee-na was sorry that it was because of her, but it was about time anyway. It was almost dinner time.
Not many guys have pocket money like me and Jung Yoon-sung, who do part-time jobs occasionally. After playing games at a PC cafe, they wouldn’t have money to eat out.
The trip was also agreed upon to stay at Eui-hyun’s aunt’s house. Honestly, that was the most reasonable thing to do. Above all, what kind of nonsense about hunting are guys with no money talking about when they’re saving on accommodation costs?
While Hee-na and I were walking leisurely after leaving the PC cafe, Hee-na stopped me.
“Yeon-hoo.”
“Yeah?”
I glanced at Hee-na cautiously, wondering if the nagging wasn’t over, but she didn’t seem to be blaming me.
“If you break it again, I’ll cut off your games.”
“Really?”
“…..I might be able to cut it off for about a week…?”
“Oh, forget it! More importantly, you know we have a date tomorrow, right? Today doesn’t count because you made me worry, okay?”
I was going to meet her tomorrow regardless.
“Ah, I know~ But what should we do tomorrow?”
“I was thinking about it a little today. How about going to the zoo?”
“The zoo? Do you want to go? I’m okay with it.”
“Yeah! Then let’s go! And do you remember?”
“What?”
“You promised to grant my wish.”
Was she talking about the one I made when we came back from the sea?
“I remember.”
“Anything is okay?”
“I’ll grant you anything. Because I was really, really sincerely sorry today.”
Hee-na’s lips curved up slightly.
“Then tomorrow, all day long, you have to follow the rules I set!”
“Rules?”
“Yeah, it’s simple. When I put my finger on my face like this…”
She put her index and middle fingers together on her lips.
“Kiss me there. Anytime, anywhere. No matter who’s around, unconditionally.”
“…Huh?”
“You said you’d do anything, right?”
She gave a somewhat seductive smile, looking more vibrant than ever.
