“Umm…”
Tann chuckled softly at the soft murmur and reached out.
Strands of long, black hair scattered across the bed slipped through his fingers.
It was the dim dawn, before the sun had fully risen.
Eun-yeong was fast asleep, so deeply that she wouldn’t notice if someone carried her away. Tann stayed by her side.
His arm had become her pillow, which he welcomed. It allowed him to stay even closer to her.
As always, he was awake, gazing at Eun-yeong as she slept soundly.
He had often laid still with his eyes closed, but he never truly understood ‘sleeping.’ Watching her asleep always felt magical.
Perhaps that was why.
Time flew by so quickly just watching her peaceful face. Soon, morning arrived again.
Before meeting Eun-yeong, the nights had always been long. Now, they were too short.
Before her, the night was always a boring and tedious time, so he never liked it much.
But now, he loved the night the most out of all times of day.
Of course, he held her in his arms regardless of the time, but unlike the busy daytime, the night offered peace without interruptions.
Tann carefully reached out to her face.
His long fingers hesitated, afraid to wake her, and traced the lines of her eyes, nose, and mouth.
Passing over her round forehead, down her quietly closed eyelids, over her prominent nose, and to her red lips.
As he slowly followed the lines, he noticed that her face, bathed in the bluish dawn light, had definitely changed.
Almost unrecognizable from her previous appearance.
“Haha… Wasn’t the old one better?”
This face was originally hers, but perhaps because it had been so long, she felt awkward with the changed appearance and was a little anxious about whether her previous face was better.
But every time, Tann shook his head firmly.
“No. This is more like you. More beautiful.”
Eun-yeong was dubious at his answer, but Tann was sincere.
Her true face was more beautiful than he could express with words.
Her black hair, like his own. Her brown eyes, always filled with a gentle light for him. Her nose that breathed out sweet breaths, and her soft lips that he always wanted to keep.
He loved everything. Of course, he would love any version of her. It was her, after all.
Like being rewarded for the long, agonizing three-month wait, each day was overwhelming and exciting for him.
He was happy to show her the North, and even happier that he didn’t have to see those guys as often.
Tann, unable to take his eyes off her sleeping face as if drawn by a magnet, suddenly noticed her white hands outside the blanket.
Her ten straight fingers were bare of any jewelry.
His hand instinctively caressed her fingers. It felt strangely empty.
Shouldn’t there be something here?
What was it?
While he was deep in thought, the book Ella had lent him suddenly came to mind.
Come to think of it, it was definitely there at the end…
“Um… Is it morning?”
Just as he was about to recall it, Eun-yeong slightly lifted her sleepy eyelids, sensing his touch.
“You can sleep more.”
Tann hugged her, his arm still serving as her pillow.
As if she had fallen asleep again, she snuggled into his arms and breathed in a steady rhythm.
Her breath reached his heart, tickling him.
He couldn’t help but smile at the rising happiness, and he pressed his forehead against her hair.
Eventually, Tann recalled the last part of the book and began toying with her fourth finger.
* * *
A few days later.
“Are you sure it’s okay? We can come with you.”
“Oh! Can we…!”
“No! It’s okay!”
Ella quickly interrupted as Maxwell’s eyes lit up and he tried to follow Eun-yeong.
“We want to look around more!”
She waved her hands, vehemently refusing, and only then did Maxwell reluctantly nod in agreement.
If he followed without any sense right now, that huge and ferocious beast standing behind the young lady would kill him with just a glare.
“I guess so. Let’s go in then.”
At Ella’s reply, Tann quickly grabbed Eun-yeong’s hand and led her away.
“See you later then.”
Eun-yeong had no choice but to quickly say goodbye to Ella and Maxwell.
Ella nodded and waved, then quickly took Maxwell and left the front of the restaurant.
“Are we not allowed to go…?”
Maxwell muttered with a slightly sulky expression, feeling disappointed.
“No way. It seems like today is an important day. If we interfere, we’ll have a hard time for a long time!”
Ella replied firmly. She had predicted it to some extent, given the questions Tann had been asking her for the past few days. That today was the day.
Meanwhile, Eun-yeong and Tann, who had entered the most famous restaurant in the North, were sitting in the most private spot inside.
Having somewhat adjusted to the mansion, she had come out to see the town today.
The streets were lively, and fully bloomed spring flowers awaited customers on the stalls. This place was, after all, a place where people lived, only different in capital and size.
“How did you find out about this place?”
Eun-yeong said, looking out the window with a rather excited face. The view of the town was spectacular.
A restaurant with a good atmosphere was not a place Tann, who didn’t usually eat out, would know about.
“Just. Heard about it.”
He chuckled, watching her look excited.
Unlike her usual comfortable attire, she was wearing a bright outfit for her first outing in a while, and she looked beautiful.
The earrings and necklace she was wearing today, matching her outfit, were among the gifts he had given her from the jewelry store.
The simple design of the necklace and earrings, adorned with several small jewels, was something she often wore. She was wearing them even when the Duke’s residence was destroyed, so luckily those two survived.
Even when he offered to give her better ones since the rest were lost, Eun-yeong insisted that she liked these and didn’t wear them often.
Tann’s gaze naturally turned to her hands, neatly placed on the table.
Come to think of it, she had the jewels he had given her on her ears and neck, but not on her fingers.
He wiggled his hands under the table on his knees with a deeply thoughtful look.
“Eun-yeong…”
“Excuse me. I will bring the main course you ordered first.”
He finally managed to speak after hesitating, but his words were lightly dismissed by the manager who brought the menu.
Tann’s face was not yet known to the people of the Northern town, so it was just a normal customer service.
Soon, well-cooked steaks with a savory smell were placed in front of each of them. They had asked for the main course to be served first because they were hungry.
“What did you say?”
“Nothing.”
Tann shook his head, as the timing was off.
After the manager left, Eun-yeong picked up her fork and knife and began to cut the steak on her plate.
“Um… it seems undercooked.”
Compared to the charred exterior, the inside was completely raw and red.
The pink blood, which could not be called juice, flowed from the cut meat and soaked the plate.
She had clearly asked for it to be medium, but there seemed to have been a mistake.
“Really?”
“Yes. I think I should ask them to… Ack!”
Surprised, Eun-yeong let out a strange scream and poured the water from her cup onto the plate.
The moment she looked up to call the waiter, flames erupted from the plate in front of her with a whoosh.
Sizzle.
The fire went out at once, and the water-soaked steak was emitting a hazy smoke.
“You said it wasn’t cooked.”
Tann asked with a puzzled look.
“Does that mean you set it on fire?”
“Isn’t it enough to just cook it?”
“Oh, my… Puhahaha!”
Eun-yeong, who was so dumbfounded that she let out a laugh, ended up giggling.
She really felt like he was the Demon King at times like this.
Because he didn’t have much knowledge about food, Tann’s actions sometimes made her laugh beyond just being dumbfounded.
“…”
Tann was momentarily lost in her bright smile. It was a clear and distinct smile.
The refreshing laughter in her ears and the beautifully curved corners of her lips made him feel good just by looking at them.
That’s why his resolve to keep that smile by his side for the rest of his life became even stronger.
He smiled along with her.
The food was cooked again and brought out. It was a pleasant meal.
* * *
“It’s already night. Even though it’s spring, the days must still be short.”
As they left the restaurant with full stomachs, the sun had already disappeared, and night had fallen.
“There’s somewhere to go.”
“Where?”
Instead of answering, Tann checked to make sure there was no one around and wrapped his arms around her waist.
The two disappeared in an instant.
“Wow… It’s so beautiful.”
Eun-yeong, who had been teleported from the restaurant to another place in the blink of an eye, was momentarily curious but couldn’t help but admire the scenery right in front of her.
So many stars were embroidered in the night sky above their heads, so clearly that it felt unreal.
They were standing at the very top of an old spire, not far from the Grand Duke’s castle.
Eun-yeong stepped forward, placed her hands on the railing, and tilted her head back.
Then, her entire vision was filled with stars. Moreover, when she lowered her gaze, the lit houses were spread out like a charming painting. It was as if they were floating in the sky.
“…”
Tann stood a step away, watching Eun-yeong, who was fluttering her black hair and looking at the stars, and captured her in his eyes.
Just looking at her made his heart tingle so much that he wondered if he had lived for this.
For her, who was by his side.
Unlike the contents of the book, Eun-yeong and he did not know for sure why he was alive. They could only guess.
But he was glad that he was alive and could protect her, who had gone through all of this alone.
He was so glad that he had lived, wandered around after losing his memory, and finally stayed by her side. That he could be there as she lived under her complete name.
Because what he had finally grasped by living was her, a perfect happiness.
“Did you bring me here to show me this?”
Eun-yeong turned around and asked Tann. Tann nodded without saying a word.
“Thank you. It’s so beautiful.”
A sincere smile formed on her lips.
Eun-yeong liked this place better than the capital.
This place where she could see such clear stars, live under her own name, and be by his side.
“But, Tann. What have you been fidgeting with in your hand since earlier?”
“…What?”
“It was so obvious that it was hard to pretend I didn’t notice.”
Eun-yeong shrugged casually.
He had been putting something in his hand, clenching and unclenching it, and watching her since they came out today, so there was no way she wouldn’t notice.
“Haha.”
He didn’t intend to surprise her, but he didn’t expect to be caught so blatantly.
Tann let out a deflated laugh and took a step forward, standing in front of Eun-yeong as if he had made up his mind.
He grabbed her fourth finger, which had been bothering him because it was empty.
That thing that he hadn’t been able to keep still in his hand all day was slipped onto her fourth finger.
It was a ring. A ring with a red ruby, resembling Tann’s eyes, surrounded by several diamonds in the shape of leaves.
“…Do you know what this means?”
Eun-yeong, who hadn’t expected this, looked up with surprised eyes at the ring on her ring finger.
Tann was smiling more brilliantly than the stars under the crumbling starlight.
“Stay by my side forever.”
“…”
At that simple but sincere confession, Eun-yeong’s brown eyes trembled greatly.
The black hair of the two people fluttered in the spring breeze.
Under the starry night sky, Tann and Eun-yeong were gazing at each other with the same emotions.
“Even if our times are not the same, I can wait for you forever. Just come back to me.”
He raised Eun-yeong’s hands and slowly lowered his head.
His hot lips lingered on her cold hands for quite a long time before parting.
“That’s all I need.”
Tann opened his mouth, gazing at Eun-yeong again with eyes filled with only one emotion.
“I love you.”
It was the first time he had said those words.
But saying it out loud made him realize even more clearly that all the emotions he had for her until now were love.
“I will.”
At that confession that finally came out of his mouth after all this, Eun-yeong bit her trembling lip along with her answer.
But tears were already welling up in her eyes, making it impossible to hide.
This soul came into this body to meet you in the end. To stay by your side.
“I love you too. So I will always come back. To your side.”
At her confession, which she poured out with overwhelming tears, Tann smiled more happily and stretched out his arms.
Without either of them saying anything, her arms wrapped around his neck, and his arms wrapped tightly around her waist.
As if to bless the two, the stars above the spire were shining dazzlingly, and the lights of the town below were twinkling beautifully.
In the countless seasons they will spend together in the future, only happiness will always be filled.
Because with each other’s happiness, the two will enjoy flowers in spring, wind in summer, fruits in autumn, and crystals in winter for a very long time.
The End
