Fifth Vital – Episode 475 (474/502)
475. Secret
“Excuse me? If you guess that right, I’ll get a checkup.”
Junhyun got off the bed, opened the curtain, pointed towards the entrance, and continued, “But if you can’t guess it, I’m just going home.”
“Hey! Yoo Junhyun, why are you doing this? You promised the magician mister, no, magician teacher. You have to keep your promises.”
His younger brother already believed 200% that Taekyung was a magician.
Junhyuk was a child who was as enthusiastic about magicians as he was about cars.
Having watched countless cartoons and movies featuring magicians, he firmly believed that magicians lived among people.
So, when he heard Taekyung’s explanation about the fifth vital, the smell of pain, he believed it without a doubt.
More than anything, his parents sometimes couldn’t tell him apart from his brother, but Taekyung immediately distinguished them, so from Junhyuk’s perspective, the director in front of him had to be a magician.
On the other hand, Junhyun thought that magicians were just characters in stories and didn’t actually exist.
“We don’t know if he’s a magician yet. It’s easy to guess one of two things, how is that magic?”
Unlike the innocent Junhyuk, the clever Junhyun didn’t believe it easily.
“Our Junhyun is so smart. Okay, I’ll guess. But if I guess right, you have to get a checkup without saying anything else. Got it?”
“Yes, I will. Try to guess which one of those people is sick.”
Junhyun looked at the people coming into the emergency room and said to Taekyung. No matter how he thought about it, smelling pain didn’t make sense.
It seemed like a story made up to get the doctor to see him quickly.
“But there are too many people.”
Looking at the crowd, Junhyuk worried that Taekyung might not be able to guess correctly.
“What are you talking about? A magician is someone who can guess no matter how many people there are.”
“Junhyun is right. Then, shall we go together?”
Taekyung took the twins’ hands and moved near the waiting area of the emergency room. He then pointed out the sick individuals to the children one by one.
“Look closely! Among the people sitting there, the man in the blue shirt and brown t-shirt, and the woman wearing a hat are here for treatment.”
This was an easy task for Taekyung, and he easily identified the patients.
“Really?”
“Really.”
“Just a moment.”
Junhyun, wanting to verify the claim, carefully approached the adults in the waiting area.
“Excuse me, nurse. What are those kids doing with the director?”
The grandmother and grandfather, who were watching this scene from afar, asked nurse Lim Jeong-suk with puzzled expressions.
“I’m not sure either. I’ll wait a bit and then go ask.”
Nurse Lim Jeong-suk was also curious. But since Taekyung had asked her to give him space, she decided to wait.
Meanwhile, Junhyun questioned the people sitting in the waiting area.
“Mister? Excuse me, did you come to the hospital for treatment?”
“Oh! Yes.”
“Wow. Even a kid can tell you look sick.”
“Don’t be sick.”
“Okay, thank you.”
Junhyuk, who followed, comforted the man with a surprised face and then followed Junhyun.
After that, Junhyun asked the remaining two people, and they confirmed they were patients seeking treatment.
The people Taekyung mentioned were all patients.
“Excuse me, nurse?”
“Yes, can I help you?”
Junhyun, showing more cleverness than expected, suddenly called out to a passing nurse.
“It’s not that. Among the people sitting there, can you tell who is sick?”
Junhyun, who was more clever than he looked, finally asked the nurse to identify the patients.
He figured that doctors and nurses probably knew everything.
At seven years old, the child who hated getting shots had thought this far.
“Oh!?”
The nurse, who had never heard such a question before, was momentarily taken aback.
“I’m curious.”
“Ah, really? You’re talking about the people sitting over there now, right?”
“Yes, that’s right.”
Junhyun nodded, and Junhyuk echoed his agreement.
“The people sitting there are waiting, so we don’t know yet who the patients are. Doctors and nurses have patient information, and we can find out when we call the patient’s name to confirm.”
“I see. Thank you for letting me know.”
The twins, who politely thanked the nurse for her kind explanation, returned to the bed. Taekyung, who was watching the scene, followed the children.
“I’ll get a checkup.”
Junhyun quietly said the words and went back to the bed he was on.
“Junhyun, is he really a magician? I’m telling you, that director is a real magician.”
“I know.”
Junhyun, who previously doubted it, now acknowledged that Taekyung was a magician after confirming his accurate identification of the sick people.
“You can’t make the magician director angry. So, you have to get a checkup.”
“That’s why I said I’d get a checkup.”
Junhyuk made sure that Junhyun wouldn’t change his mind again.
“Director, do I need to get a shot?”
Junhyun asked Taekyung with a slightly dejected expression.
“I need to do some tests to know for sure, but from what I see now, you need to get an IV, and to do that, I need to put a needle in your arm here.”
Junhyun, who remembered getting an IV at the hospital, knew what Taekyung was talking about.
“Are you worried it will hurt?”
“Yes, shots hurt a lot. Last year, they stuck a needle in my arm here, and they had to re-stick it several times, so I kept crying.”
“That’s right. I got a shot last year too, and it hurt, so I didn’t want to get it.”
“Then, is a little prick okay?”
“Yes, that’s okay.”
“Junhyun, can you put out your arm?”
Junhyun silently put out his arm, and Taekyung moved his fingers back and forth on the child’s arm as if he were writing something.
“Okay. It won’t hurt anymore.”
“What is this?”
“A magic spell to make the shot not hurt so much.”
When Taekyung quietly said that he had cast a spell, the twins stared intently at Junhyun’s arm with surprised expressions.
After that, Taekyung called the grandparents, and nurse Lim Jeong-suk brought the supplies for the children’s tests.
“Are you going to do it yourself, Director?”
“Yes. I’ll do it today.”
Usually, the nurse draws blood, but sometimes, like today, when there are scared children, Taekyung sometimes does it himself.
He was good at handling children, and he was good at giving shots to children with thin blood vessels without hurting them.
“Close your eyes and count to 5 seconds.”
At that, Junhyun tightly closed his eyes, and Taekyung skillfully inserted the needle to draw blood.
When his brother closed his eyes, Junhyuk next to him also tightly closed his eyes.
“Please don’t hurt my brother.”
“Okay! It’s all done. You can open your eyes.”
Junhyun, who had been closing his eyes with all his might, opened his eyes.
“Is it already over?”
“It’s over, right? It didn’t hurt much, did it?”
“It was just a little, a slight prick at first, and then it was over. It didn’t hurt at all.”
“Really! It really didn’t hurt?”
“Yeah. It didn’t hurt at all.”
Junhyuk asked with a curious expression as if he couldn’t believe how a shot could not hurt.
“Junhyuk, do you want to get one too?”
“No! I don’t want to. My stomach doesn’t hurt.”
“Our Junhyun got his shot well and is all grown up now. Good job.”
The grandmother and grandfather were just amazed that Junhyun was quietly getting a checkup and drawing blood without fussing.
After that, he also did well on the X-ray, and the results came out shortly after.
“Okay! Junhyun’s blood test results are out.”
“How is our Junhyun?”
“Looking at the results, the inflammation levels aren’t high, but his blood sugar is a bit low, so he needs to get an IV. But it’s a relief that the enteritis [inflammation of the small intestine] isn’t too severe and he doesn’t have any vomiting symptoms.”
“Thank you, doctor. Junhyun, you have enteritis, so you need to get an IV, is that okay?”
“Yes, I can get it. You’ll give me the shot, right?”
“The director drew blood earlier and it didn’t hurt at all, so he wants the director to do it.”
“No? The director is a magi…”
“Hey! Yoo Junhyuk, be quiet.”
Junhyun quickly stopped Junhyuk, who was about to say that Taekyung had used magic.
“Junhyuk, do you have something to say?”
Junhyuk, realizing his mistake, quickly covered his mouth with both hands and shook his head.
“Junhyun is really good at getting shots now. Junhyun is the best at getting shots among the kids who came to the emergency room today.”
When Taekyung put in the IV and praised him, Junhyun unknowingly wore a proud expression.
That’s how Junhyun bravely and admirably finished his IV on the bed.
“Thank you so much, Director.”
“Our twins are afraid of coming to the hospital, but thanks to you, we were able to get a checkup without any trouble.”
The grandfather and grandmother, who had finished paying at the reception desk, approached Taekyung, who had just come out of the emergency room, and thanked him for resolving Junhyun’s stubbornness.
“Grandma, Grandpa. Are we going to buy toys now?”
“That’s right. Toys.”
“Then, we have to go since we promised. Let’s say goodbye to the director quickly.”
“Director, just a moment.”
At the word to say goodbye, Junhyuk slightly pulled on Taekyung’s gown and moved a little away with Junhyun.
“You know, we can’t tell anyone that you’re a magician, right?”
The children covered their mouths and whispered very quietly so that only Taekyung could hear.
“Of course not. I said it was a secret earlier.”
“Junhyuk is right. It’s a secret between us, so we can never tell anyone. Actually, I’m a magician who heals sick people, so I’m working as a doctor in this hospital.”
Taekyung, who thought the children’s expressions of firm belief were so cute, showed a hand gesture that would appear in a movie with a serious expression.
“Wow! That’s cool. Magician Director, we’ll keep our secret.”
“Me too. I’ll keep my promise too.”
“Okay, thank you. Now, go home and don’t eat too much ice cream or cold things, always wash your hands cleanly before eating, and listen to your parents, grandparents. Got it?”
“Yes.”
The children nodded vigorously and engraved Taekyung’s words in their hearts.
“Excuse me, Director. Can I shake your hand?”
In Junhyuk’s eyes, Taekyung already looked like a magician, not a doctor. So he wanted to shake hands with the magician.
“Sure. Let’s shake hands. I’ll put magic in when I shake hands so you can grow into a particularly wonderful person.”
“Wow! That’s awesome. Thank you.”
“Me, me too.”
“Okay. I’ll do it for Junhyun too.”
The children shook hands with Taekyung and left the hospital with their grandparents.
Until the moment they left, the twins put their index fingers to their mouths and showed a very proud expression, gesturing that they would keep the secret.
“How can they be so cute and innocent?”
“The kids?”
Nurse Lim Jeong-suk approached Taekyung and asked.
“Yes, they make me smile just by looking at them.”
“Me too. Not only my own kids but also other kids look like angels and are lovely. By the way, Director? How did you do it?”
