#16 – The Person Riding the Wave vs. The Person Swept Away by the Wave (4)
“Haa… Let’s go.”
As Song Yoona stood up, Seo Inwoo hurriedly followed suit, jumping up from his seat.
“No, it’s a joke.”
“Pardon?”
Seo Inwoo tilted his head, responding to Song Yoona’s expressionless face.
“It was a prank.”
Seo Inwoo seemed flustered by Song Yoona’s reaction, trying to brush it off.
I pointed to the cell phone he was holding.
“We really don’t have any battery left.”
We hadn’t unloaded all the luggage from the docked boat.
We were planning to leave the deserted island as soon as the sun rose the next morning.
And since we didn’t know when it would rain again, we hadn’t taken out any luggage that wasn’t absolutely necessary.
Even when I went to get the board game earlier, we decided to save the portable charger and left it behind.
Seo Inwoo looked at his cell phone at my words and said,
“That’s true… but only I don’t have battery, so it’s okay.”
Then, he looked at Song Yoona and said,
“It’s really okay. Please sit down quickly. I’ll decide on another penalty.”
He said, looking at the pitch-black sea.
Song Yoona shrugged her shoulders.
“I’m okay too. I lost the game, so.”
She turned her gaze to Shin Minyoung and me.
“Doesn’t everyone else have low phone battery?”
We each looked at our cell phones.
My battery was at 17%.
Shin Minyoung held up her cell phone screen for everyone to see.
6%.
Song Yoona, looking at it, raised the corners of her lips and replied,
“See? We need a portable charger anyway.”
Then, she tilted her chin towards me, who was sitting down.
“What are you doing? Get up. Let’s go.”
“Ah….”
I thought she would complain, saying something like, ‘It’s scary, I don’t want to go,’ but.
It was unexpected that Song Yoona was telling me to go first with such a confident face.
The her I knew was always irritable about everything.
I looked at her and nodded.
“Okay. Let’s go.”
As we stood up side by side, Seo Inwoo handed me a flashlight.
“Sunbae [senior colleague/upperclassman], take this with you.”
“Yeah, thanks a lot.”
I glanced at him and said.
Seo Inwoo burst into laughter and replied to me.
“We’ve been keeping this on the whole time. The light seems bright.”
He started explaining the location of his bag to me.
“If you go to where we put the luggage in the boat, there’s a wide navy-colored bag next to it, okay?”
“Oh, I think it was around my bag.”
“If you open the inside pocket there, there are four portable chargers.”
At his words, Song Yoona asked, her mouth wide open.
“There are four of them?”
“Yes, I’m a supporting actor, so I have a long waiting time. I don’t have a separate manager either. It’s an essential item. Haha.”
Shin Minyoung nodded.
“Yeah, I used to carry a huge one with a large capacity. Can we use Inwoo’s together?”
“Of course. You can charge it when we go to the mainland tomorrow.”
“Then we’ll be back.”
As I pressed the power button on the flashlight, Song Yoona turned around with her arms crossed.
Swish-.
I started walking towards the docked boat with Song Yoona.
The surrounding air was thick with unspoken tension.
The surroundings were dark.
The only light was the flashlight I was holding and the countless stars in the sky.
“There are so many stars because it’s an island.”
At my words, Song Yoona, who had been walking at a distance, stopped in her tracks.
Then, she slightly raised her head to look at the sky and opened her mouth wide.
“Yeah, well….”
She answered nonchalantly.
Feeling that she was very indifferent, I turned my head to look at her.
Glancing at her face out of the corner of my eye.
Without raising her head much, she was looking up at the distant sky with just her eyes.
Her eyes were sparkling,
And her face looked as if she was captivated by the countless stars.
“It’s really amazing, right?”
At the question, she pouted her lower lip and nodded.
“It’s hard to see stars like this in Seoul.”
“Well, that’s true.”
The answer that came back was still short.
Song Yoona was consistently walking a few steps away from me.
I spoke to her again.
“Yoona-ssi, it’s dark, so I can’t see well. Come a little closer.”
“It’s okay.”
“It’s dangerous.”
She shrugged her shoulders, walking next to me with her arms crossed, answering instead.
Does she just not want to walk next to me?
This time, I held out the flashlight to her.
“I can’t see ahead, so I’m worried you might trip on a rock. Or, would you like to hold the flashlight and walk?”
She shook her head at my words.
“No, thanks.”
And she took a step closer to me.
I pointed the flashlight forward, looking at the boat.
The boat was finally in sight, but there was still a long way to go.
The closer we got to the water, the more the wind started to blow.
I noticed Song Yoona running her hand down her arm.
She was only wearing a thin piece of clothing.
I was wearing a light jacket.
I knew she would say no with a haughty face if I asked if she was cold, so I quickly took off my jacket and handed it to her.
“You look cold, wear this.”
“I’m not cold at all.”
As expected.
Song Yoona replied with a cool face.
But her arms were covered in goosebumps.
“I took it off because I was hot, so you can wear it if you’re cold.”
As I held out my jacket to her once again, Song Yoona snatched my clothes away.
“It’s not like I’m that cold….”
Song Yoona, who answered bluntly, lightly draped my jacket over her shoulders.
I chuckled at her appearance, but quickly composed myself.
Once again, we started walking without any conversation.
Then.
Rattle.
A strange sound came from the side where she and I were walking.
Surprised by the sound, I looked at Song Yoona with wide eyes.
She also flinched.
“What was that just now?”
As I stopped walking, she asked, her attitude completely different from before.
“Isn’t it just the sound of grass swaying in the wind?”
“Ah, is that so.”
As I turned my head and looked at the grass, Song Yoona inhaled and said.
“There’s nothing to be scared of, let’s go quickly?”
“…Yes.”
She started walking one step ahead of me before I knew it.
I quickly walked forward to match her pace.
And then, another sound.
Rattle.
“Huh?”
Suddenly, Song Yoona’s steps stopped.
Soon, she let out a dry cough and moved forward again.
I quickly shone the flashlight in front of her.
Flash-!
At the same time, the light disappeared.
“What is it?”
Song Yoona turned around at the same time as the light disappeared.
I pressed the power button on the flashlight repeatedly with a flustered face.
But the light still didn’t come on.
“I don’t know. Did the battery run out?”
The flashlight had been on the whole time we were playing board games.
The batteries must have run out of power because they had been on for a long time.
“Haa.”
She sighed deeply.
I quickly took out my cell phone from my pocket.
“Yoona-ssi, let’s turn on the cell phone light and go.”
She sighed even deeper at my words.
“My battery is dead, so my cell phone is off.”
The cell phone light was weaker than the flashlight I was holding.
Because the visibility was shortened, I stuck close to her.
“Then let’s go a little closer. I can’t see well ahead.”
“There’s nothing there, we can just go straight ahead.”
She looked at me as I approached and stepped slightly to the side.
That’s how we headed back to the boat.
Finally reaching the boat.
The size of the boat was quite large, as all the staff and actors had boarded.
We stepped onto the boat one by one and walked to where the luggage was piled up.
Because it was a docked boat, the floor creaked as we stepped on it.
For some reason, goosebumps rose on my arms at the eerie feeling.
It was then.
“Kyaa!”
Song Yoona let out a short scream.
Surprised by her scream, I asked.
“What’s wrong?”
She pointed somewhere with a tearful voice.
“There….”
“Yes?”
I looked at where she was pointing, but there was only the sea.
“There… a ghost….”
“A ghost?”
I couldn’t see anything.
Song Yoona was on the verge of tears, taking quick breaths.
Her head was facing the floor.
I quickly spoke in a soft tone to reassure her.
“It’s okay. There’s nothing there, Yoona-ssi.”
“Really, there’s nothing?”
Song Yoona, terrified, kept her head down and unconsciously dropped honorifics to me.
“Yes, there’s really nothing. It’s okay.”
As if relieved by my words, Song Yoona slowly raised her head.
“Kyaa!”
Then she let out a high-pitched sound again.
Song Yoona was looking at the end of the boat.
When I shone the cell phone light there, there was a net hanging on a stick.
She must have mistaken it for a ghost.
Her body was trembling.
I could feel her trembling like an aspen tree.
Before I knew it, Song Yoona was holding my arm and burying her head deep inside my body.
I gently placed my hand on her back.
And slowly, very gently, I started patting her back.
“It’s not a ghost. There’s a net and a stick there, it must have looked like a person. I checked.”
At my words, she turned her head again.
I shone the light to confirm that it wasn’t a ghost.
Then, as if the tension was relieved, all the strength drained from her body.
I grabbed her to steady her.
Song Yoona, who had regained her senses, quickly pushed me away.
She coughed dryly and rolled her eyes quickly.
She had been showing a confident appearance from the start until now.
I almost laughed at her embarrassed appearance now.
“What is it? You said you weren’t scared at all.”
She kicked the innocent floor with her foot at my words and replied.
“Ahem, I lost my footing and fell towards you. I didn’t lean on you….”
“Yes, I understand.”
I swallowed the laughter that was coming out.
“If you stay here for a moment, I’ll go in alone and get the portable charger quickly.”
As I spoke and walked forward.
Song Yoona stuck right next to me faster than anyone else.
“No, let’s go together!”
Her face turned red.
I smiled as I looked at Song Yoona.
Song Yoona had this side to her too?
***
Several weeks have already passed since I went on location to the countryside.
And today, without fail, I visited the filming set.
“We’re almost there.”
Kim Siljang [office manager/team leader] said, slowing down the car.
The set was visible in front of me.
Looking out the window, I replied to him.
“I know. We’re already here.”
As I was preparing to get out of the car, I took out my cell phone from my pocket to change the sound to vibrate.
Then, without realizing it, I clicked on the internet window as a habit.
Park Minjoon’s face popped up on the main screen.
“What, why is the first thing I see Park Minjoon?”
“Huh?”
Kim Siljang looked at me through the rearview mirror.
I shifted my gaze from my cell phone to him and replied.
“I opened the internet, and an article with Park Minjoon’s picture was on the main page.”
At my words, Kim Siljang chuckled.
Then he tilted his head.
“But why?”
I raised my eyebrows at his words.
“An article about Park Minjoon is on the main page, isn’t something going on?”
I immediately clicked on the article at Kim Siljang’s words.
“Obviously, it’s just a drama article….”
The moment I saw the article, I was speechless.

…Park Minjoon is screwed?
