Martial Arts Surgeon – 24
Martial Arts Surgeon 24
Chapter 5: Medical Student (4)
Though it was after Ipchun [Start of Spring in the traditional East Asian lunisolar calendar], the weather was still too chilly to truly call it spring.
The wind sliced at the skin like a blade, and each breath turned into a white cloud.
Jun-hoo looked up at the blue sky and located the subway station.
He boarded the subway, crowded with people on their way to work.
A subway at this hour…
It felt somewhat unfamiliar, but it was a schedule he would have to adapt to.
Jun-hoo was no longer a high school student.
He was legally an adult and a college student.
Squeezed among the people, Jun-hoo stared out the window. The subway was crossing the Han River.
Today was the day of the orientation for the College of Medicine, a one-night, two-day event.
He would meet new people in an unfamiliar environment, but he wasn’t particularly worried.
Rather, he felt a slight excitement.
He was getting closer to his dream of becoming a surgeon.
Soon after, Jun-hoo got off the subway, left the station area, and headed to the campus of Shinwon University.
He took in the campus where he would spend the next six years.
Inside the College of Medicine building, many medical students had already gathered.
Since most of them didn’t know each other, an awkward atmosphere lingered in the lobby.
Everyone was busy hovering around or fiddling with their phones.
However, Jun-hoo was in a slightly different situation from the other students.
He had an acquaintance among them.
Unable to find his acquaintance with his eyes, he called the person.
The person said they would be a little late.
The person who arrived shortly after was none other than Ah-young.
Ah-young, who had competed for the top two or three spots in their high school, had also entered Shinwon University’s College of Medicine.
She had overcome the hyperventilation syndrome that occurred on the day of the college entrance exam and achieved good results.
“It’s even nicer to see you here.”
Jun-hoo spotted Ah-young and waved his hand.
“Me too. Good morning.”
Ah-young smiled and stood facing Jun-hoo.
As a college student, Ah-young had become more mature than she was in high school.
It seemed to be because she was wearing makeup and paying attention to her clothes.
Now that he looked at her, Ah-young was as beautiful as Ji-ae. As soon as Ah-young appeared, some of the male students were busy glancing at her.
In today’s terms, Ah-young seemed to be a hidden gem.
“Have you had breakfast? I bought bread, do you want to eat together?”
Jun-hoo chuckled at Ah-young’s unchanging love for bread.
“Anyone would think you were reincarnated because you couldn’t eat bread in your past life.”
“Maybe I was. I can live without rice, but I can’t live without bread.”
Ah-young accepted Jun-hoo’s joke and took bread from her padded jacket pocket.
She unwrapped the bread and handed half of it to Jun-hoo.
Jun-hoo took the bread Ah-young offered and ate it.
It was a cream bread, so even though there was nothing to drink, it wasn’t difficult to swallow.
“Was the horror movie worth watching?”
Jun-hoo changed the subject.
Before the orientation, Jun-hoo had often contacted Ah-young.
At that time, Ah-young said that she was enjoying watching horror movies these days.
“Yeah. I think I’ve seen almost all the horror movies that are said to be scary. It was really scary at first, but now it’s bearable.”
“Do you like horror movies?”
“Rather than liking them, it’s more like a kind of training?”
“Training?”
Jun-hoo tilted his head and asked.
Horror movies and training…
It was a combination of completely mismatched words. What was this, talking nonsense out of the blue?
“I was so nervous and scared during the college entrance exam that I had hyperventilation syndrome.”
“That’s right.”
“So, I trained with horror movies so that it wouldn’t happen again. That’s what I mean.”
Ah-young said in a voice that was proud of herself.
The training method was very strange, but Jun-hoo thought Ah-young was amazing.
Repeatedly facing what you fear was extremely painful.
Even Jun-hoo, who had experienced the world of martial arts, felt that way.
But Ah-young was constantly striving to overcome her weaknesses.
“I respect you, older sister.”
Jun-hoo said, half-joking and half-serious.
Then Ah-young waved her hand, feeling embarrassed.
“What’s really admirable is not me, but you, Jun-hoo. I was able to be here thanks to you.”
“Suddenly a praise relay?”
“You started it first?”
While Jun-hoo was talking with Ah-young, the OT [Orientation] start time arrived.
Jun-hoo entered the auditorium with Ah-young.
As other medical students took their seats, the orientation began.
The first orientation, held in the auditorium, was a kind of briefing session.
Medical school life and curriculum,
Introduction of faculty and seniors.
Club activities, etc.
After the first orientation, which lasted about two hours, the students all boarded the waiting tour buses.
In a way, the real OT [Orientation] was just beginning.
Because the students would get to know each other, meet the seniors in person, and have recreation time.
“Do you get motion sickness?”
Jun-hoo’s gaze stayed on Ah-young, who was sitting next to him.
Since when, Ah-young had been talking less and her expression looked uncomfortable.
Considering the time, situation, and place, the reason was only motion sickness.
“I get really bad motion sickness. I forgot to stop by the pharmacy after going to the bakery.”
“It’s okay. Leave it to me.”
Jun-hoo sequentially acupunctured the area around the temple where the 4th cranial nerve is located.
The area next to the eye where the 3rd cranial nerve is located.
The back of the neck where the motor nerve is located.
Motion sickness occurs due to an imbalance between the brain, eyes, and visual nerves.
Therefore, relaxing the area naturally resolves it.
‘As expected, it’s a scam.’
Jun-hoo laughed inwardly.
Acupuncture based on anatomical knowledge was Jun-hoo’s best weapon.
It was a versatile key that could diagnose and treat at the same time.
Perhaps he would benefit more from it when he became a doctor.
“How are you feeling now?”
“Uh… I suddenly feel fine? Did you do some kind of magic?”
“My hands are naturally healing hands.”
Jun-hoo showed off his sociability.
“Jun-hoo, you seem to have a really special ability. When I took the college entrance exam, my body and mind felt comfortable after you massaged me.”
Ah-young stared at Jun-hoo and said.
The more she knew Jun-hoo, the more amazing he was.
He was unusually bold for his age.
His grades were always at the top, and he was full of various medical knowledge.
Perhaps that’s why.
Sometimes Jun-hoo felt like an adult with a lot of experience, not a peer.
“Ah-young, you’re not ordinary either? I’ve never seen a child who likes bread as much as you and watches horror movies to overcome their weaknesses.”
“That’s true.”
Ah-young nodded.
Jun-hoo, who was talking with Ah-young, then shouted in a loud voice.
“If anyone is suffering from motion sickness, come to me. I’ll help you.”
He didn’t like to step forward, but it was a different story when it came to treating people.
Jun-hoo decided to take care of friends who were suffering from motion sickness like Ah-young.
Soon, half a dozen friends complaining of motion sickness approached Jun-hoo, and Jun-hoo acupunctured them as he had done for Ah-young.
The customer satisfaction was excellent.
Everyone was busy expressing their gratitude to Jun-hoo.
Thanks to this, Jun-hoo became an unwanted insider from the beginning of the OT [Orientation].
* * *
It was around 5 p.m. when they arrived at the pension located in Gapyeong [A popular vacation area in South Korea].
After arriving at the accommodation, Jun-hoo unpacked his luggage and went outside.
The surrounding scenery was beautiful.
The mountain range surrounding the pension was lush and green, and the air was clear and fresh.
He also liked the quiet atmosphere without noise.
It would be nice to bring his parents here later.
“Thank you for earlier.”
While enjoying the scenery, someone approached and spoke to him.
He didn’t know his name, but he was the person who had been suffering from motion sickness earlier.
“My name is Choi Sung-ho. I entered after retaking the exam three times.”
“You’re a senior.”
“Speak comfortably. It’s not like we’re only going to see each other for a day or two.”
Jun-hoo quickly became close with Sung-ho.
Sung-ho had the sociability and friendliness that Jun-hoo lacked.
Even after talking for a short time, he didn’t seem to have a prickly personality.
“You’re a very noticeable style, aren’t you?”
“Me?”
Jun-hoo tilted his head.
“First of all, your appearance is noticeable. You could be an idol? On top of that, you entered as the top student in the school. And you treated the kids’ motion sickness on the bus.”
“It’s not just you who thinks that way, is it?”
“It’s not just you who doesn’t know your presence, is it?”
Sung-ho countered Jun-hoo’s words.
Jun-hoo suddenly thought that Sung-ho might be right.
Jun-hoo, who had experienced the world of martial arts and gained special powers, felt that his actions and judgments were natural, but it might not be the case from other people’s point of view.
This is the difference in perspective.
“Anyway, you’re going to be tired in the future.”
“Why?”
“Shinwon University’s College of Medicine orientation is really bad. It’s old-fashioned.”
Sung-ho began to criticize the orientation process until it became a mess.
If Sung-ho was right, the upcoming OT [Orientation] would not be pleasant.
“Hyung [Older brother or male friend], trust me. I’ll take care of it.”
“Why? Are you going to confront the seniors? Stop it. You’re the one who’s going to have a hard time if you get on their bad side.”
Sung-ho shook his head.
Due to the nature of medical school, the relationship between seniors and juniors was especially strong.
The hospital floor was so narrow that there were many encounters and rumors spread quickly.
What if you get on the bad side of a senior with power?
Then your future life as a doctor would be a thorny path.
“I won’t do that. There’s a way to get through it nicely.”
“What is it?”
“You’ll know if you watch.”
Jun-hoo’s answer was meaningful.
* * *
After unpacking and having dinner, the students all gathered in the auditorium.
According to the host’s instructions, groups were formed with 6 people in each group.
Jun-hoo was lucky enough to be in the same group as Ah-young and Sung-ho.
After the groups were formed, they introduced themselves.
The seniors who were assigned to each group also told stories about college life.
The name of the senior in charge of Jun-hoo’s group was Kim Yun-gi.
He seemed to be a playful style as a second-year pre-med student.
The only time to play is during pre-med.
He said to go on blind dates, do club activities, and have hobbies during pre-med.
Jun-hoo, who had no intention of playing, listened to Yun-gi’s words with one ear and let them flow out with the other.
To Jun-hoo, a doctor was not a means to gain money and fame.
The doctor himself was the goal.
It was to feel proud of treating patients and seeing them recover.
In other words, Jun-hoo’s tendency was the opposite of Yun-gi’s.
“Let’s stop talking about this and prepare for the talent show. Is there anyone who is good at singing or dancing?”
Yun-gi changed the subject.
Then the group members all lowered their heads or avoided Yun-gi’s gaze.
Everyone had only studied and entered medical school, so there was no way they would have any talents.
Jun-hoo thought that the time had finally come.
The freshman talent show, one of the evils of Shinwon University’s OT [Orientation] that Sung-ho had mentioned.
Why should a newly admitted freshman show off talents they don’t have?
If there was a talent show, shouldn’t the seniors do it and make the newly admitted juniors happy?
…Jun-hoo held back what he wanted to say.
To live in society.
To become an adult meant that you had to do things you didn’t want to do.
“Senior. I have a question.”
“Yes. Tell me.”
“Talent show. Can I do it alone? And the other group members can help me from the side.”
“It doesn’t matter, but your talent has to be outstanding to do that. Can you handle it?”
“Yes.”
“Show me what it is.”
Yun-gi looked at Jun-hoo, and the other group members’ gazes were all focused on Jun-hoo.
Everyone seemed extremely curious about Jun-hoo’s talent.
What confidence did he have to do a talent show alone?
“I’ll start.”
Jun-hoo got up from his seat.
