92.
Was it because I slept well last night?
After starting my meditation with the Breath of the Wind technique as usual, I naturally fell asleep, but my body felt unusually light today.
“Let’s go.”
I stepped forward at the head of the group with Riorden.
Gaile naturally stuck by my side. In this expedition, he was focusing more on protecting me than eliminating Goran.
Ram and the Atlan knights, Thompson, and the Riverhill wizards were not to be underestimated.
Ken predicted that the two would target me after I killed Goran, the Seed of Evil, but Gaile seemed to think differently.
He never left my side, thinking that the two could harm me anytime, anywhere.
Even when we spent the night in the cave, David and Riorden took turns guarding my camp.
Anyway, I felt light on my feet this morning.
The spirits also seemed to sense my mood and felt a little more cheerful than usual.
And Ignis, as always, gave me advice disguised as nagging.
-It’s not good to be too excited.
‘Okay.’
I replied to Ignis and calmed my mind for a moment with the Breath of the Wind technique.
Before long, we arrived at the place Riorden and I had searched yesterday.
Riorden opened his mouth as if to tell me not to worry.
“The traces have not been erased.”
“Let’s pick up the pace a bit.”
Riorden nodded at my command.
Again, I spread the spirits out wide, just in case there were any undead or orcs around.
Riorden concentrated and led the way. No one spoke. Everyone quietly followed Riorden.
Soon, we reached the place where we had stopped searching yesterday. Riorden walked around, examining the surroundings more closely.
Fortunately, there were no variables like yesterday. No orcs were in sight, and neither were any undead.
‘Is there anything strange around?’
The sylphs [air spirits] said there was nothing unusual. Ignis didn’t say anything special either.
How much time had passed?
Around the time the sun rose to its zenith, Riorden raised his hand.
“The trail ends here.”
At Riorden’s words, I looked around.
We had come straight up north from the Falls of Death. The terrain was much higher than other places, and the entire Forest of Darkness was visible at a glance.
‘Did she climb this mountain to see the entire Forest of Darkness?’
For a moment, I wondered if Karen had come here to scout the Forest of Darkness, rather than to find Goran.
Then Ignis said,
-Undead and orcs are gathering.
I widened my eyes and asked.
‘Undead and orcs? Where?’
-There’s a place with dead trees to the east, right? There are a lot of undead and orcs gathered around there.
I glared to the east, but I couldn’t see clearly.
I quickly called Gaile.
“Gaile, is there a place with dead trees to the east?”
Gaile nodded.
Soon, he said in a stiff voice,
“There are many undead and orcs.”
“I think we’ve found it.”
Gaile agreed with my words.
“Yes. The security seems to be even tighter than the Orc Legion’s main camp.”
Gaile could see much further and more clearly than I could. After becoming a Sword Master, Gaile’s physical abilities had improved so much that they were beyond comparison with ordinary people, as well as other knights, spiritists, and wizards.
I had set up the existence of Sword Masters myself, so I knew Gaile’s abilities in detail.
Even if a wizard or spiritist reached a higher level, their physical abilities did not improve like a Sword Master.
In many ways, Sword Masters were very effective and had many unimaginable abilities.
“A lich… is commanding the undead.”
At Gaile’s words, I stopped thinking and frowned.
“A lich? Is it the lich we fought before?”
“Yes.”
“I guess he was resurrected because we didn’t destroy the Life Vessel [a container holding a piece of the lich’s soul].”
I immediately called Riorden, David, Ken, Ram, and Thompson.
They had heard my conversation with Gaile, so they were well aware of the situation.
“We found a place suspected to be where the Seed of Evil is… but the security is not easy.”
Ken stepped forward.
“Your Highness, I think it’s important to accurately assess the strength of the security forces first. Fortunately, it doesn’t seem like they can see this place from there, so how about accurately assessing the enemy’s strength through spirits?”
Ignis was also watching from the high sky to avoid being detected, so it was impossible to grasp the enemy’s strength in detail.
As expected, earth spirits were perfect for this.
I immediately called two Noes [earth spirit name].
‘Approach as secretly as possible and assess the enemy’s strength.’
-It seems like you’ll have to concentrate because it’s quite far.
It seemed like they needed a lot of mana.
I told Noes to rest assured.
‘Don’t worry. I’ll focus only on you.’
Then I told the others about this.
“It’s quite far, so I need to concentrate. Keep an eye on the surroundings.”
As the two Noes left, I immediately sat cross-legged and performed the Breath of the Wind technique while supplying mana to the two Noes.
I felt the two Noes getting further and further away.
I sent the other spirits back to the spirit realm for now.
* * *
‘It would be really nice if I could share my vision with the spirits.’
Is there such a skill?
I didn’t remember setting it up separately.
In the first place, I had hardly written any settings for spiritists.
Still, since I could communicate with spirits, I could get a variety of information vividly, even if it wasn’t as much as sharing vision.
-There seem to be at least five hundred skeletons. There seem to be about twenty Dullahan [headless undead knights].
-There’s also a Death Knight.
At Noes’ words, my expression naturally became serious.
The undead’s strength alone was not easy to deal with.
-There are fifty orc shamans. There seem to be more than five hundred orc warriors.
Just counting the numbers, there were over a thousand undead and orcs combined.
That was about ten times our number.
-I can’t invade the center.
-The magical energy is so strong underground that if I go in, I’ll be immediately reverse-summoned to the spirit realm.
I told Noes to come back.
It seemed like we had enough information about their strength.
Although we only circled around the outside and counted, we could still estimate the enemy’s strength to that extent.
I immediately opened my mouth.
“There are five hundred skeletons and more than five hundred orc warriors. In addition, there are more than twenty Dullahans as main forces, one Death Knight, one lich, and about fifty orc shamans.”
Ken started calculating, and Ram and Thompson’s expressions also became complicated.
It took three knights to deal with one orc. Skeletons were similar.
To break through the defenses, we needed at least three times as many knights as the enemy, but we only had a hundred.
“The key is whether the strength of one Sword Master, one high-level spiritist, and ten wizards can make up for the lack of numbers.”
Everyone’s heads seemed to be spinning at my words.
Strength could not be measured simply. The simplest way to measure it was by numbers, and we were already behind in those numbers, but there was an existence outside the norm called a Sword Master.
And the strength of spiritists and wizards could not be easily judged by numbers either.
Gaile stepped forward after a long time.
“I think it’s possible. The problem is what happens when the Seed of Evil steps in.”
The knights’ eyes turned to Gaile.
Ram asked Gaile directly.
“They don’t just have a lot of soldiers. It takes at least four top-tier experts to handle a Dullahan safely. But there’s also a Death Knight. Even if the wizards hold back the lich and orc shamans…”
Ram trailed off, seemingly annoyed by his own lack of confidence, and shut his mouth.
Gaile’s voice was still calm.
“I’ll take care of the Dullahans and the Death Knight, the wizards will hold back the orc shamans, and if Your Highness supports the knights, we may be able to break through the defenses without much damage.”
I widened my eyes and asked.
“Is that possible? There are twenty Dullahans alone. And the Death Knight is a completely different being from the Dullahans.”
“This time, they probably summoned monster Dullahans wandering in the Demon Realm, rather than making Dullahans out of knights from their previous lives.”
I narrowed my eyes and asked.
“What’s the difference?”
Ken stepped in to explain.
“If a knight from a previous life cannot accept death and becomes a Dullahan or Death Knight, they become a little stronger than they were in their previous life. And Death Knights become much stronger than they were in their previous life.”
Riorden also showed knowledge no less than Ken’s.
“Dullahans or Death Knights wandering in the Demon Realm are like monsters in the Middle Realm. They are beings that naturally occurred in the Demon Realm, and as such, their power decreases when summoned to the Middle Realm.”
Gaile added.
“Since they weren’t knights in their previous lives, they’re not used to fighting knights, so they’re easier to deal with.”
I fell into thought.
Thompson stepped forward.
“We can handle the orc shamans well enough with just the wizards.”
Unlike Ram, Thompson showed confidence.
“Not all wizards have to deal with the orc shamans. Four or five people are enough.”
This was clearly a statement conscious of Ram.
Ram seemed to have hurt pride, but he did not easily change his opinion.
I turned my gaze to Ken.
“What do you think?”
“The Seed of Evil is a variable. We don’t know his exact identity, but if he joins the battle, the current conversation is meaningless.”
I immediately relieved Ken’s worries.
“The Seed of Evil is not a force. If he had proper power, there would have been no reason to capture Gaile, and there would have been no reason for the lich to talk about offering me and Gaile as sacrifices.”
Ken nodded.
“Then now is the most opportune time. More troops have been added to the west from the Orc Legion, and the enemy doesn’t know we’re coming, so there will be a surprise effect.”
Once he determined that there was a possibility, Ken came up with a plan like lightning.
“Gaile, is it possible to deal with the lich in one fell swoop?”
Gaile hesitated for a moment, then nodded.
“It’s possible. If the lich isn’t prepared.”
Ken turned his gaze to Thompson.
“Is there any magic that can kill the presence of all of us?”
“There is. But if I use that magic, I’ll have to be out of the battle for a while.”
Ken nodded.
“That’s fine. It’s most important to start the battle in the form of a surprise attack. Once the battle begins, Gaile must deal with the lich first. We don’t know where the Life Vessel is, so even if it’s impossible to kill him, you can remove him from the battlefield.”
Ken looked at everyone and continued.
“Starting with the lich leaving the battlefield, the knights should target the orc shamans first.”
Ram glared.
“Orc shamans?”
“Yes. Orc shamans are similar to wizards. If you can get close, they are much easier to deal with than orc warriors or skeletons. On the other hand, if they start using magic, the battle becomes complicated.”
Ram quickly understood.
There was no better prey for a knight than a wizard who allowed them to approach.
“While the knights are dealing with the orc shamans, the wizards will take care of the skeletons and orc warriors through area magic. Your Highness will take charge of the defense.”
“Me?”
“Yes. So that the wizards can fully concentrate on firepower. Their numbers are not easy to deal with, and the knights cannot be separately assigned to defense, so Your Highness must take on that role.”
The outline of the battle was slowly taking shape.
Ken turned his gaze back to Gaile.
“After removing the lich from the battlefield, Gaile must hold back the Death Knight and the Dullahans. If they join the battle, the balance will be broken.”
