“W-what the hell is wrong with this guy?”
The assistant instructor, flustered, rushed to the trainee who had collapsed on the floor.
“Trainee number 97! Trainee number 97!”
He grabbed the trainee by the shoulders and shook him, but the trainee was only half-conscious. He hadn’t completely lost consciousness, but he was convulsing all over, as if he couldn’t breathe properly.
“W-what do we do? Medic! Medic!”
Seeing how urgent the situation was, the assistant instructor frantically called for the medic.
“Coming!”
The medic sprinted over. Sliding to a stop in front of the trainee, the medic’s face turned pale.
“Do something!”
“Yes!”
The medic tried to take some measures, but the situation was beyond what he, not being a doctor, could handle. Helpless and sweating profusely, the medic yelled.
“Ambulance! Get an ambulance, quick!”
“This bastard, an ambulance right now…”
The assistant instructor couldn’t even wipe the sweat dripping from his face as he frantically looked around.
This was beyond their ability to handle. A superior officer needed to come. But, as always, the officers were nowhere to be seen when they were needed.
“Report to the 2nd Platoon Leader! Hurry!”
“Yes!”
One of the assistant instructors who had been watching ran into the CS room [Chemical, Biological, Radiological room] at full speed.
“2nd Platoon Leader! There’s something wrong with a trainee.”
“What are you talking about?”
“He’s convulsing! We need to do something quickly… Cough! We need to take action.”
The 2nd Platoon Leader jumped up from his seat, his face pale.
He wouldn’t have come into the CS room without a gas mask and started spouting nonsense. That meant something was definitely wrong. The 2nd Platoon Leader rushed outside.
“What’s going on! What’s all the noise!”
Quickly taking off his gas mask, the 2nd Platoon Leader saw the collapsed trainee and couldn’t help but tremble.
Even to his eyes, it looked like the trainee was about to die.
“Where’s the medical officer? The medical officer!”
The medic was startled and replied. He had been so flustered that he had forgotten about the medical officer.
“He should be at the command post!”
“Damn it! What is that crazy bastard doing not being on standby during CBR [Chemical, Biological, Radiological] training! Get him here now! Now!”
As the medic stood up, the 2nd Platoon Leader threw the gas mask he was holding at the medic’s face.
Thwack!
The medic, suddenly hit by the gas mask, stared blankly at the 2nd Platoon Leader.
“Hey! You crazy bastard! If you leave, who’s going to look after the patient! You stay with the patient, and someone else has to go!”
“Ah…”
The medic nodded repeatedly and then grabbed the patient’s shoulder again, trying to calm him down.
“Trainee number 97! Trainee number 97! Wake up!”
Sweat dripped from the medic’s face.
“Do something!”
The 2nd Platoon Leader yelled in alarm as the trainee’s face turned black. He was starting to feel like they might kill someone if they weren’t careful.
“Get the medical officer here quickly!”
“Yes!”
The assistant instructor ran off.
But the 2nd Platoon Leader knew instinctively that something bad would happen before the medical officer arrived.
“Wouldn’t it be better to radio?”
“Ah!”
At the assistant instructor’s quiet suggestion, the 2nd Platoon Leader quickly grabbed the radio.
“Accident at the CBR training site. Repeating, accident at the CBR training site. Medical officer, move to the CBR training site immediately. I repeat, medical officer, move to the CBR training site immediately.”
Even though he had called the medical officer by radio, the situation was still dire.
The trainee’s face was turning pale blue.
“Does he have any underlying conditions?”
“I, I don’t know. The medical officer checked the trainees’ medical conditions.”
“Damn it.”
The 2nd Platoon Leader, thinking that he might have to watch someone die in front of him, didn’t know what to do and paced back and forth.
That’s when it happened.
“Just a moment.”
Trainee number 100, Kang Jin-ho, approached the trainee who had collapsed on the floor.
“Get out of the way, you! Get back!”
The assistant instructor shouted in panic, but Kang Jin-ho shook his head slightly.
“Please step aside for a moment.”
“What?”
Kang Jin-ho was returning the words that he was told to do.
“You think this is a normal situation?”
“That’s why I’m doing this.”
The assistant instructor’s eyes wavered.
Come to think of it, Kang Jin-ho was the first to notice the abnormality in Trainee number 97, which no one else had noticed.
‘Did he go to medical school in society?’
There were occasionally people who joined the military while in medical school.
“B-but still, step back.”
But even so, they couldn’t leave the patient in the hands of a trainee. If something went wrong, who would take responsibility? Although, the situation had already become serious enough to start assigning blame.
But Kang Jin-ho was adamant.
“Hey, you!”
“He’ll die.”
The assistant instructor’s eyes wavered.
“If you leave him, he’ll die within three minutes.”
The assistant instructor turned his head to look at the 2nd Platoon Leader. He wasn’t the one who had to make the decision.
‘Damn it.’
The 2nd Platoon Leader couldn’t figure out how to deal with this messed-up situation.
Even to him, the trainee’s condition was deteriorating rapidly. He doubted that even the medical officer would be able to do anything when he arrived.
What if a trainee died during his training?
At that moment, his career would be over. There would be no turning back.
“Let him try.”
“Sir!”
“I said, let him try.”
The 2nd Platoon Leader was grasping at straws.
From his perspective, this whole situation had been caused by Kang Jin-ho. But he couldn’t exclude Kang Jin-ho even in this situation.
Without a word, Kang Jin-ho pushed the assistant instructor aside and approached the trainee. Everyone stared blankly at the scene.
“Hmm…”
Kang Jin-ho placed his hand on the trainee’s chest and frowned.
His chest and throat were full of turbid energy. He didn’t know how to explain it with modern medicine, but he knew how to deal with this situation.
Thump!
Kang Jin-ho pressed down on the trainee’s upper abdomen.
“Cough! Cough!”
With a loud cough, bloody phlegm began to bubble up from the trainee’s mouth.
“W-what the!”
The trainee’s reaction was so violent that it seemed like he might die.
His arms and legs began to thrash uncontrollably.
“Hold him down! You bastards! Don’t just stand there, hold him down!”
At the 2nd Platoon Leader’s shout, the assistant instructors rushed over and held down the trainee’s limbs.
Kang Jin-ho focused on expelling the turbid energy, ignoring the situation around him.
‘Here.’
Whoosh!
The internal energy rising from Kang Jin-ho’s hand stimulated the trainee’s energy.
“Cough! Cough!”
Then, the trainee twisted his whole body and began to vomit blood.
“Gack!”
“Isn’t he going to die like that?”
“Haa…”
Contrary to the 2nd Platoon Leader’s worries, the trainee took a deep breath and his convulsions subsided.
“What?”
When he stopped convulsing, they weren’t relieved, but rather, they were suddenly afraid.
“Did he stop breathing? Medic!”
The medic quickly put his ear to the trainee’s nose.
“His breathing is normal. It’s a bit rapid, but it’s… okay.”
“Really?”
Only then did the assistant instructors, who had been holding the trainee down, slowly let go and step back.
The medic nodded, seeing that the trainee’s breathing seemed to have become easier.
“He’s stable for now. It would be best if the medical officer could check him.”
“Haa…”
The 2nd Platoon Leader wanted to collapse on the spot, but he desperately kept his legs steady, knowing that everyone was watching.
Those five minutes felt like his soul had left his body.
“Why did this happen to this guy?”
“I, I don’t know…”
The medic looked back and forth between the trainee and the 2nd Platoon Leader, as if he didn’t know what was going on.
“What did you do?”
The 2nd Platoon Leader asked Kang Jin-ho sharply.
Just as Kang Jin-ho was about to say something, someone came running from the other side.
“He’s here! The medical officer!”
The medic shouted urgently, and the medical officer ran to the trainee, looked him over, and then said to the medic.
“What? I heard he was about to die?”
“He just got better.”
“Trainee number 97…”
The medical officer checked the number on the trainee’s helmet, opened the chart he had brought with him, and frowned.
“He’s a trainee with a slight sign of asthma. But he should have been fine with this level of training?”
The medical officer’s eyes turned to the CS room.
“Why is that door like that?”
“That’s…”
The medic looked at the other assistant instructors for an explanation, but none of them answered.
“How long did you leave him inside?”
The medical officer asked the 2nd Platoon Leader with a sharp look.
“Not… not long.”
“I didn’t ask how long, I asked how long!”
The medical officer said to the assistant instructors.
“Hey, did you do it as it was supposed to be? According to the regulations?”
Everyone hesitated and didn’t answer, so the medical officer nodded as if he understood.
“Anyway, we’ll find out everything when we investigate the trainees and the assistant instructors, so let’s deal with the responsibility later. I’ve already called an ambulance, so we need to send him to the Armed Forces Capital Hospital for a checkup.”
“The Armed Forces Capital Hospital?”
“He just had an asthma attack, what if he has lasting damage? Get ready now!”
The 2nd Platoon Leader started sweating at the medical officer’s words.
He was the one who had violated the training regulations. Even if there was nothing wrong with the trainee, they would try to find the cause of the attack, and that would likely cause a big problem.
“Does he really need to be hospitalized?”
“Are you kidding me! You!”
The medical officer stood up and shouted.
“He almost died! If we don’t figure this out properly, they’ll say that I put a problematic trainee in the CS room and caused an accident, why should I have to hear that! I have nothing more to say, send him in the ambulance.”
“No, that’s…”
At that moment, Kang Jin-ho, who had been quietly watching the trainee, stood up and turned around.
“Hey, where are you going?”
“Returning to my position.”
“Uh, where to?”
Kang Jin-ho looked at the assistant instructors with a strange look and pointed to where the trainees were standing.
“To my spot.”
“Ah…”
Where else would a trainee go?
Come to think of it, it was strange that the trainees were still here in this situation.
“Okay, go back for now.”
As soon as he got permission, Kang Jin-ho gave a light salute and turned back to his spot.
“What’s with him?”
The medic whispered to the medical officer.
“When he collapsed, that guy picked him up, ignored the assistant instructors, and came out.”
“And broke the door?”
“Yes.”
The medical officer turned his head and shouted.
“These crazy bastards, a person has an attack, and instead of getting him out first, they stop the guy who’s trying to save him? Are they crazy?”
The medical officer stood up and shouted.
“You, you bastards. I’m going to report this to the battalion commander and turn everything upside down, so be prepared!”
Listening to the medical officer’s angry voice, the 2nd Platoon Leader closed his eyes.
