I will build here.
Sunlight is most important for homes. When we design buildings, especially houses, we need to think about how much sunlight gets in. People spend a lot of time at home, so sunlight is very important for their health and happiness.
That’s why houses are usually built facing south, if possible. This helps them get the most sunlight.
But Woojin was designing an office building, not a house. Sunlight is still important for offices, but not as important as for homes.
He thought, ‘People often close the blinds in offices because the sun is too bright.’
So, how would Woojin use the sunlight information from the Golden Print in his design?
Woojin wanted to use the sunlight itself as part of his design. He didn’t just want to make sure the building had enough sunlight. He wanted to use the way the light looked and moved as a design element.
The Golden Print showed Woojin information about light. He wanted to use the shapes and patterns of the light in his building’s design.
He thought, ‘Even the shapes of the Golden Print, scattered at different angles, are beautiful.’
But Woojin could not think more about it. He had a sketch of a building based on the Golden Print, and it looked good, but something was missing.
Woojin thought about it for a long time, even after he left work and went to bed. Then, he suddenly knew what was missing.
He thought, ‘It’s too simple. I’m just copying the Golden Print’s shapes and putting them on the building. I need to add my own ideas.’
So, on his way to work, Woojin decided to change his sketches from the day before. He had planned to have a design meeting in the morning, but he moved it to the afternoon.
“Good morning!”
“You’ve arrived, CEO.”
“Should I set up the morning meeting for 10 o’clock?”
“Ah, please postpone the meeting to the afternoon.”
“Understood.”
“I will let you know the exact time again after lunchtime.”
“Yes, CEO.”
Woojin walked into his office and turned on the air conditioning. The air outside was heavy, even though it was still early morning in July.
“Ugh,” he sighed, “sweating already, just from walking!”
He took a long drink from a cold can he’d bought on his way, then dropped his bag and sat down.
“Well, then, shall we start again…?”
But then…
Woojin’s eyes widened. He saw something he did not expect.
The Golden Print, which had appeared on site before, was now floating above one of his drawings.
Woojin stared at the golden hologram, surprised.
He thought, ‘This is the first time the Golden Print has appeared in two places like this…’
The Golden Print had never appeared twice for the same project. Of course, Woojin was happy about this, but he also felt strange.
It was as if the Golden Print was not happy with his design and was giving him more hints.
He thought, ‘Is that really it? That’s a bit of a blow to my pride…’
But Woojin quickly felt motivated again. He enjoyed finding out the secrets of the Golden Print, not just the design.
So, Woojin started to think about why the Golden Print only appeared on one of his drawings. He had more than ten sketches and drawings.
He quickly found the answer.
The other drawings were sketches of floor plans, walls, or the outside of the building. But the drawing with the Golden Print was a three-dimensional picture.
It showed all the elements of the floor plan and walls together.
It was a picture that showed the complete building in one drawing.
Woojin took another piece of paper and drew a more careful and accurate three-dimensional picture.
Then, just as he thought, the Golden Print appeared on that paper too.
“Interesting.”
As soon as he answered the first question, he thought of another one.
Was the Golden Print on this paper the same as the one floating on site? Did it have the same hints?
He thought, ‘They look almost the same for now…’
So, Woojin took out the drawing he had made on site and compared it to the two new Golden Prints.
Then, he found something very interesting.
The new Golden Print had a slightly different rule.
He thought, ‘Could this be…’
The new Golden Print had a shape similar to the golden shape he had seen on site, but it was clearly different.
And every time Woojin moved his pen on the drawing, the shape of the Golden Print changed a little.
The Golden Print on site showed information about the light at that time.
But the new Golden Print on his drawing changed as he changed his design.
Woojin spent almost an hour changing and redrawing the drawing, studying the changes in the Golden Print. He became more and more confident.
He thought, ‘This is… amazing.’
Normally, you can find out about light in a building if you know the location and do careful calculations.
But you can’t see how the light changes as you change the design in real time, unless you create a special computer program.
So, Woojin was getting more and more excited.
He thought, ‘I think I know how to use this Golden Print this time.’
If Woojin used this special tool, the Golden Print, with the parametric design he had been studying…
He thought he could create a truly amazing design.
He thought, ‘If I know exactly where the light will enter over time, I can add patterns that change with the light… Am I getting too greedy?’
Woojin swallowed hard, thinking about all the possibilities.
He thought, ‘Or, if I can create a set of rules from the Golden Print and use it not only for this office building but also for Parafield’s pavilion…’
Woojin’s design for the pavilion used the flow of light designed by Bruno and parametric design.
But it was not based on exact calculations. It was more abstract.
But what if he redesigned it with perfect calculations?
What if he could create a design that looked perfect when it was finished?
Woojin looked at the calendar.
The fact that the Golden Print related to light appeared just when he was designing Parafield’s pavilion seemed like a lucky coincidence.
He thought, ‘I don’t know why the Golden Print came to me, but it’s up to me how I use it.’
Woojin’s ambition was not just to use the Golden Print.
He wanted to completely understand it and make it his own.
That was Woojin’s ultimate goal.
Woojin turned on the computer, leaving only a few drawings on the desk. He cleared everything else away.
He made a phone call and started the 3D program.
“Seokgu, are you busy?”
[A little?]
“What are you doing?”
[I’m checking the final model for the SH Corporation project.]
“Come to my office when you’re done.”
[What’s going on?]
“It’s important. Come as soon as you can.”
[Okay. I understand.]
Woojin hung up the phone and opened the calendar. He started writing down various things.
Woojin’s plan, which had been unclear, was now becoming more concrete.
The final exam was over.
Woojin’s second year, first semester, was also over.
The report card on Woojin’s laptop screen was, as always, very unusual.
He had a mix of A+ and F grades.
Soyeon looked at it and said,
“Oppa, how can you fail a class that gives you a B just for showing up?”
“I know.”
“I’ve never seen a report card with no C’s or D’s and a GPA of less than 3.”
“Me neither.”
Jayden jumped up and down next to Woojin.
“Bloody Hell! Woojin got an A+ in DCD? No way. I can’t believe it.”
Soyeon asked,
“Jayden, didn’t you get an A+?”
“Damn it. That’s not true. Jayden was definitely better than Woojin.”
Soyeon asked,
“So, what’s your DCD grade?”
“It’s a secret.”
“If it’s less than A+, doesn’t that mean it’s A+? You’ve said everything and you’re saying it’s a secret.”
“That’s not true, Woojin.”
“What are you saying.”
“Anyway. Jayden is the best.”
Woojin actually had a way to tease Jayden.
He thought, ‘Seonbin also got an A+. If I tell him, he’ll be hurt, right?’
Jayden thought that Woojin was the only one who got an A+, but Seonbin’s DCD grade was also A+.
Looking at Jayden’s reaction, his grade was probably around A0 or A-.
He probably didn’t use the visual script algorithm in the final project.
He thought, ‘You should have studied Grasshopper a little even if you didn’t want to.’
But he decided to be kind and not say anything, to protect Jayden’s feelings.
“Jayden’s GPA is a whopping 4.1. It can’t even be compared to Woojin.”
“That’s good.”
“You were lucky enough to get an A+ in DCD, but you knew very well that you couldn’t beat Jayden, right?”
“I know.”
He probably said that to avoid Jayden’s loud voice.
“Well, I avoided academic probation. I’m satisfied with this!”
Woojin closed his laptop and got up.
Jayden, who had been complaining, stood up and asked,
“Woojin. How about chicken for dinner tonight? I want to eat boneless chicken.”
“You mean boneless chicken.”
“Damn it. Woojin needs to be more generous.”
“If I’m going to be more generous here, I’ll probably have to become a clergyman instead of a designer.”
Woojin ignored Jayden’s nonsense and checked the time.
He thought, ‘If I meet the professor and come back, the time will probably be right…’
He was going to refuse dinner because he had an appointment with Professor Jo Woonchan, but he thought he had enough time.
“Then I’ll go see the professor and come back, so how about eating dinner around 6:30?”
Soyeon answered,
“Okay. I’ll meet some of my Young Design friends by then.”
Jayden asked,
“What’s on the menu?”
“Um… Anything but boneless chicken, Jayden.”
“Bloody Hell!”
Woojin packed his laptop and left the student lounge.
Woojin walked faster and faster.
The professor’s office was close to the student lounge, but he had less than five minutes until the appointment.
He thought, ‘I have to be there before the professor.’
But Woojin did not know that there was another guest coming to the appointment.
