787. I’ll Go Wherever I Want
“Oh… Ah, right. Most people wouldn’t know. Cherub was originally strong enough to wander around the monster zone alone. But because of the black magician, his divine power disappeared, or maybe it’s bound—anyway, he can’t use it.”
Rembrary stared up at the paladin, unblinking.
Heather, who had belatedly caught up with Rembrary, also widened her eyes.
Heather hesitantly looked at Rembrary, who still wasn’t blinking.
“You’re very surprised.”
The paladin mumbled, oblivious.
“But it’s okay. Sir Cherub is very strong. He’ll be safe.”
As Rembrary continued to stare, the paladin scratched his head.
“Did I say something wrong?”
The paladin subtly asked Heather.
Heather shook her head.
“No, you didn’t.”
The paladin hadn’t done anything wrong, but Heather was worried about Rembrary. *Could he be blaming himself for this?*
“Did Sir Cherub know he didn’t have divine power?”
Heather asked the paladin, just in case.
She hoped Rembrary wouldn’t blame himself, thinking, ‘What if Sir Cherub went to fight thinking his divine power had returned?’
“Of course.”
The paladin answered immediately and knocked on the hospital room door.
“Coming in.”
The paladin, who had shouted inside, opened the door and looked at Rembrary and Heather alternately.
“Rembrary.”
Heather placed her hand on Rembrary’s shoulder and spoke as gently as possible.
“Let’s go in. We need to heal Sir Cherub’s younger sibling.”
“We should.”
Finally, Rembrary broke free from his frozen state and quickly entered the hospital room.
He was acting as normal as if he hadn’t been frozen at all.
Once inside, Rembrary located Cherub’s younger sibling before the paladin could even explain. The green hair was particularly noticeable, even from a distance.
“Sir Cherub’s younger sibling.”
Rembrary quickly approached him.
“Who is that child?”
The doctor, who had been checking his medical bag, frowned and asked the paladin.
“That’s Rembrary. You know, the child who’s becoming famous for his healing abilities these days.”
As the paladin informed him in a low voice, the doctor put down his bag and approached Rembrary.
Rembrary looked down at Mulu with his hands clasped together.
The large glasses the child had been wearing before were gone, and there were scratches on his face.
“His arms and legs are all bandaged.”
The doctor informed him of the symptoms from behind.
As if hearing that, Mulu slowly opened his eyes.
“Strange kid…….”
Mulu mumbled weakly as he looked at Rembrary.
Rembrary placed his hand over Mulu’s eyes.
Mulu didn’t know why Rembrary was doing this, but he couldn’t raise his hand because his injured arm was in a splint.
But soon, he felt a warm and comfortable sensation, as if a drop had fallen on his forehead. The peace that started from his forehead quickly spread.
As Rembrary removed his hand, Mulu slowly opened his eyes.
“How do you feel?”
As Rembrary asked, the doctor and paladin both looked at Mulu.
“It doesn’t hurt.”
Mulu mumbled, looking at the ceiling.
“Please remove the splints.”
At Mulu’s words, the doctor pulled back the blanket, unwrapped the bandages from Mulu’s arms and legs, and removed the fixed wood.
“Oh, my. The bruises have all disappeared.”
The doctor exclaimed before Mulu could even say how he felt.
The assistants who had been walking around all approached. The paladins also craned their necks.
“Look at this. That kid healed Mulu!”
“He put his hand on his forehead, and he was healed!”
“The rumors must be true…….”
“Rumors?”
“You know, among the novice priests…….”
Rembrary listened to the murmuring of the people with one ear and only looked at Mulu.
Mulu moved his hands and feet and then looked at Rembrary.
“Did you do this?”
Rembrary nodded and stretched his shoulders.
“I did.”
“My sister is hurt.”
Mulu grabbed Rembrary’s sleeve.
“Sir Cherub is my benefactor.”
Rembrary mumbled, looking at his tightly held sleeve.
“I will save Sir Cherub.”
* * *
“Sir Cherub might be a little… not so smart.”
After healing the people in the hospital room, Rembrary spoke to Heather as if telling a secret while walking down the hallway.
“Why?”
“He didn’t tell me that his divine power hadn’t returned.”
“Maybe he didn’t want you to worry.”
“Even so, he should have told me.”
Rembrary frowned, creasing his smooth forehead.
“It’s not just Sir Cherub’s problem. If we let it go like this, I won’t be able to heal Sir Cherub, and later I won’t be able to heal other people like Sir Cherub. I’ll say again to someone who has lost their divine power that I can heal them without knowing anything.”
“!”
Heather widened her eyes. She had only thought about Mulu being disappointed.
She would have thought about the broader implications later, but right now, she was only focused on Mulu being surprised and hurt.
But Rembrary was not disappointed. Rather, he was thinking about what would happen beyond that.
Heather rubbed her arm for no reason. She felt a slight chill.
She had thought he was just a prince who liked sweet and salty food, an innocent and righteous child, but also unsociable.
“Heather, Heather.”
“Yes, Rembrary.”
“You can’t tell Sir Cherub that I said he wasn’t smart.”
“Hmm. I don’t know. I have a big mouth.”
“!”
Heather chuckled as she joked, but when she saw Rembrary looking at her with a blank expression, she quickly said seriously.
“I’m kidding. I won’t tell him.”
* * *
A rescue team was formed to save the people who couldn’t escape the training grounds, the people who were dragged away by monsters, and the scattered people.
Most of them were paladins, but a few priests were also included in the group to prepare for healing the injured.
Rembrary heard the story the next morning while going to have a meal.
“I want to go too.”
Rembrary immediately asked Heather to join the rescue team.
“Huh? You too……?”
Heather, who was tearing bread from across the table, asked blankly.
“Yes. I’m smart, so I’ll be helpful.”
Rembrary answered confidently.
Heather was a little surprised.
“What’s wrong?”
“No, you…….”
Heather couldn’t bring herself to say, ‘You’re usually lazy,’ and mumbled instead.
“You’re brave.”
“Of course.”
“But you probably won’t be able to get into the rescue team.”
“Why?”
“Because you’re eight years old.”
At Heather’s obvious words, Rembrary raised his eyebrows.
“Is there a law that eight-year-olds can’t join the rescue team?”
“Of course there is.”
“No. I know there isn’t.”
“Wow. Rembrary is smart.”
“Of course. I’m a smart eight-year-old. A smart eight-year-old is okay to join the rescue team.”
Heather knew that the rescue team members would never take a young child to a dangerous place.
How strong Rembrary was or wasn’t wasn’t the criterion for joining.
Mulu, eating with the children in the same class a little further away, overheard the entire conversation.
‘That kid is… a smart eight-year-old.’
Mulu regretted judging Rembrary as a bit of a frivolous child after seeing him approach so casually.
Besides, Rembrary seemed to have a sense of justice.
‘My sister was right after all. That kid is a good kid. Remy was wrong.’
Thinking of his sister, Mulu lost his appetite.
‘I shouldn’t have asked my sister for help.’
Mulu put down his spoon and covered his face with both hands. In a dangerous moment, Mulu had called his sister. His sister appeared like magic and saved Mulu.
But after that, his sister disappeared. Mulu didn’t know that his sister had lost her divine power in an accident.
‘It’s my fault. I called my sister…….’
Rembrary was logically telling Heather why he should join the rescue team when he saw Mulu’s profile at the diagonal table next to him.
* * *
After finishing his meal, Rembrary started wandering around, saying he would participate in the rescue team.
Heather knew that Rembrary wouldn’t be able to join, so she didn’t follow him.
Since there were only paladins in the paladin training center anyway, there was nothing dangerous.
Instead, Heather met with the head of the training center and heard about the monsters that suddenly appeared during the outdoor test.
“Could there be a black magician involved this time too?”
The head asked in a desolate voice, sending the documents of the dead one by one to one side.
“It’s ambiguous. It’s not that the training center was attacked, but that a large number of monsters appeared in the outdoor training grounds. Even though it’s a training ground, it’s just an ordinary forest in normal times.”
Heather said that, but she couldn’t shake her worried expression.
For the past few months, the black magicians hadn’t been very active.
Was this incident caused by the black magicians moving again? Or did the ever-increasing monsters just happen to appear there?
“But either way, we need to be careful. The training grounds aren’t far from the training center.”
After the discussion, the head said a few more words about Rembrary.
“I heard the child likes to eat, so I got this. They say it’s the most popular bread in the nearby territory, so I hope you’ll bring it to him.”
The head handed Heather a basket covered with cloth as she left the room.
Heather walked to the accommodation where Rembrary was staying with the basket.
‘By now, Rembrary would know that he couldn’t participate in the rescue team.’
He might be depressed for a while, but he’ll brighten up soon when he sees the food. Heather smiled at the thought of Rembrary being happy while eating bread.
Heather deliberately knocked on the door brightly as she stood in front of it.
“Rembrary, I’m coming in.”
But Rembrary wasn’t in the room.
Heather looked at the clock. Several hours had already passed since she had parted ways with him.
‘I thought he would have come back. Is he still looking for the rescue team members?’
*There’s no way a maverick rescue team member would have offered to take him.* Heather shook off her uneasy thoughts and put the basket on the table.
‘A note?’
Then she found a white, square note under the decorations on the table.
‘What is it?’
Heather took out the note, turned it over, and froze as she read the writing.
-I’m worried about Sir Cherub. Besides, they say they might not be able to bring back the seriously injured people depending on the situation. I’ll be back soon.
Rembrary didn’t write the destination, but Heather knew immediately where he had gone. He had followed the rescue team on his own.
“Rembrary!”
Heather screamed.
“What’s wrong?”
A paladin who was passing by rushed over at the sound.
“The child… seems to have followed the rescue team.”
Heather pressed her hand to her forehead and handed over the note.
The training center was briefly in an uproar over the fact that the novice priest who had come to heal people had disappeared on his own.
The head comforted Heather, who was depressed, by giving her something to eat.
“It’s okay. It’s difficult to enter the outdoor training area. Besides, there are other paladins stationed around it. Even if the child goes near, he’ll be caught by the paladins.”
Heather covered her forehead and shook her head.
“You don’t know, Head. Rembrary is very smart.”
Heather was saying it sincerely.
But to others, it just sounded like Heather was bragging about her novice priest.
“Ah, of course, that’s right.”
The head replied casually.
He sincerely believed that the child would be caught by the paladins and brought back soon.
Only Heather shook her head. She recalled the time when Rembrary had walked alone from the Florandia Temple to the Floran Territory in the middle of the night. *Rembrary is… resourceful.*
