The Great War (1)
Liang Jun was immediately stunned. Yang Chen was speaking so clearly, repeatedly emphasizing that he would only give him one chance to answer. This meant Yang Chen already knew the truth but wanted to hear him admit it.
However, falsifying accounts to deceive the headquarters was a serious matter.
At best, his father could intervene and perhaps mitigate the consequences.
At worst, financial fraud and embezzlement of public funds were crimes punishable by imprisonment.
So, could he admit it?
If he confessed, anyone present could report him, and Liang Jun would be finished.
However, Liang Jun had witnessed Yang Chen’s methods and dared not lie or conceal anything.
This put him in a difficult position.
“Brother Chen, why are you asking this?” Liang Jun asked, stalling for time.
Yang Chen replied flatly, “I said you only had one chance to answer, and you wasted it. Prepare to go to jail.”
Liang Jun was dumbfounded, and everyone else was shocked.
Was Yang Chen’s style so decisive and ruthless?
He’d given Liang Jun only one chance, and he meant it? Liang Jun must have realized the gravity of the situation; otherwise, he wouldn’t have hesitated to answer.
Liang Jun quickly pleaded, “Brother Chen, Zhao Wenhui and I are friends. Please don’t report me for her sake. I’ll pay their wages immediately, okay?”
Yang Chen countered, “Call your dad and tell him that Yang Chen from Star Chen Investment wants to speak with him.”
Liang Jun was shocked and stammered, “What? Star… Star Chen Investment is yours? Then why were you pretending to be a billionaire? If Star Chen Investment is yours, you’re at least a trillion-level billionaire!”
Yang Chen suddenly turned and glared at Liang Jun, silencing him.
The friend next to him whispered, reminding Liang Jun not to talk nonsense and to call his dad quickly.
The problem he could have solved himself now required his dad’s intervention because he’d wasted his opportunity with idle chatter.
If he continued to squander opportunities, even his dad wouldn’t be able to help him. He seemed incapable of grasping the escalating nature of the situation.
After being reminded by his friends, Liang Jun finally understood.
However, instead of calling his dad, he said to Yang Chen, “Brother Chen, I’m really willing to pay their wages immediately, you…”
Yang Chen grabbed a plate and threw it at Liang Jun’s chest, the impact nearly breaking his ribs.
Zhao Wenhui said angrily, “Liang Jun, is there something genuinely wrong with your brain? Everyone has been hinting at it, but you still don’t understand? This isn’t a problem you can solve yourself anymore. Your dad has to step in. Is that clear enough? If you keep talking nonsense, even your dad won’t be able to help you. How could I have tolerated such a stupid person like you for so many years? You have no emotional intelligence or insight.”
Other friends shook their heads, speechless. They had all given up on Liang Jun.
He was almost thirty and didn’t even understand basic social cues. Sooner or later, something big would happen.
It was best to avoid associating with this kind of person in the future, to avoid being implicated like today.
Liang Jun rubbed his chest and then called his dad.
When Liang Baoguo heard that Yang Chen, the boss of Star Chen Investment, wanted to see him, he rushed over immediately.
Meanwhile, the restaurant manager cautiously approached.
“Hello everyone, I’m Zheng Kang, the manager of this restaurant. I’m truly sorry for disturbing your meal,” the manager said with a smile.
Yang Chen waved it off. “It’s okay, it’s been resolved. Can you help me call Huang Long, the hotel manager, over?”
Zheng Kang hesitated. “What do you need Manager Huang for? I can explain things to him so he doesn’t refuse to come.”
Yang Chen insisted, “Just say Yang Chen is looking for him, and he’ll come.”
Zheng Kang relented. “Okay, okay. I’ll go to the office area to find Manager Huang right away.”
Soon, Huang Long hurried in.
“Mr. Yang, you’re here! Why didn’t you tell me? If I had known you were here, I wouldn’t have allowed what happened just now. It’s my fault, my fault,” Huang Long apologized profusely.
Yang Chen smiled. “It’s nothing special. I just came for a meal. There’s no need for you to know. I need a quiet place to talk about some things now. Can you arrange it for me?”
Huang Long suggested, “How about the management office’s meeting room? Or the sky courtyard upstairs? You haven’t stayed in our hotel’s sky courtyard yet, have you? Why not try it now?”
Yang Chen had stayed in the presidential suite with Cheng Junjun last time but hadn’t experienced the sky courtyard.
Since he had nothing to do, he might as well try it.
“Okay! Then arrange a courtyard for me, and I’ll experience it for one night,” Yang Chen said with a smile.
Huang Long nodded quickly. “Okay. Are you coming with me now?”
Yang Chen nodded. “Let’s go. Liang Jun, when your dad arrives, you and him come up to find me.”
Liang Jun nodded eagerly.
Huang Long respectfully guided Yang Chen away.
Zhao Wenhui followed closely behind.
The others discussed in hushed tones.
“What’s going on? Why is the manager of Pangu Seven Star Hotel so polite to him? Is he really just a ride-hailing driver?”
“A million-a-day sky courtyard; it sounds like he’s getting a free stay.”
“What should we do? Should we follow him up to see the world? I haven’t experienced the sky courtyard of Pangu Seven Star Hotel yet.”
“Let’s go, let’s follow him and see. With Zhao Wenhui around, they shouldn’t drive us away, right?”
Several people nodded and quickly chased after him.
Liang Jun took out his bank card to pay the bill, feeling frustrated about the entire meal.
Pangu Seven Star Hotel had 12 sky courtyards, each costing one million [yuan, approx. $140,000 USD] a day. Renting one for a year offered a significant discount, costing only one hundred million [yuan, approx. $14 million USD].
Despite the exorbitant price, they were very popular.
Just over a hundred meters away was the Water Cube [National Aquatics Center], and five hundred meters away was the Bird’s Nest [National Stadium]. Being in mid-air, the wealthy enjoyed this kind of experience, a life inaccessible to ordinary people.
The group of rich second generations had been pretending just moments ago, but now they were like country bumpkins seeing the world for the first time.
“So this is what it feels like to live in a sky courtyard.”
“One million a day; it’s not that we can’t afford it, but we really can’t justify it.”
“The night view here must be stunning. The life of the ultra-rich is just different.”
These rich second generations certainly had plenty of pocket money, but they would never spend a million to stay here for a day. Even if they were willing, their parents wouldn’t allow it.
It was like ordinary wage earners staying in a ten-thousand-a-day hotel. They could technically afford it, but they would never choose such a place, opting instead for a more reasonable hotel.
Yang Chen still needed to talk to Liang Baoguo, and it was too inconvenient with these people chattering.
So, Yang Chen said to Zhao Wenhui, “They can leave when they’ve had enough fun.”
Zhao Wenhui understood and quickly nodded. “Brother Chen, don’t worry; I’ll take care of them.”
Yang Chen walked to the window, looked toward the Bird’s Nest, and sighed, “No wonder Old Wang said that LV [Louis Vuitton] and other brands aren’t luxury goods. The real luxury goods are hotels, etc. Good hotels are truly beyond the reach of ordinary people.”
Huang Long, standing behind him, said with a smile, “That’s right. Our hotel is positioned for high-end customers, providing the best service, and customers pay the highest fees. Only in this way can both parties be satisfied.”
Yang Chen nodded and continued to enjoy the view.
After a while, Zhao Wenhui ushered everyone out.
“Brother Chen, I’ve taken them all away. I don’t want to associate with them in the future. I feel like I’m not from the same world as them,” Zhao Wenhui complained.
Yang Chen replied, “That’s your decision. I have to talk to Liang Jun’s dad about something later; you can do whatever you want.”
Zhao Wenhui understood and quickly left the room.
About forty minutes later, Liang Jun arrived with his dad.
Liang Baoguo greeted Yang Chen. After a few pleasantries, they went into the room, excluding everyone else.
“I won’t beat around the bush. I’ll get straight to the point. I want Chairman Liang to sell all his shares to me at 90% of the current stock price and voluntarily leave Baorun Real Estate. If Chairman Liang cooperates, I’ll turn a blind eye to your son’s financial fraud, embezzlement of funds, and other crimes. Otherwise, as a shareholder with a 4.9% stake, I have the right to audit the accounts. At that point, not only will your son go to jail, but you will too. Your son doesn’t know how to behave, but I hope Chairman Liang does. You have one chance to choose, so think carefully,” Yang Chen said bluntly.
Liang Baoguo’s smile vanished, his face darkening, and anger flashed in his eyes.
“Mr. Yang, why force us into a corner? My son’s behavior was wrong, and it was wrong of him to offend you. But we’re willing to compensate, so why push us so hard?” Liang Baoguo asked.
Yang Chen countered, “Why do you assume others must give you a chance to compensate? If I stab you and then offer to pay for medical expenses, would you let it go? If you do something wrong, you have to bear the consequences. If you lack the courage and ability to do so, why do you do those things? Not every ‘sorry’ can be exchanged for ‘it’s okay,’ don’t you understand that?”
Liang Baoguo was silenced by Yang Chen’s retort.
He didn’t want to give up everything completely.
But wanting wasn’t an option, as he knew the accounts of the subsidiary and the headquarters wouldn’t withstand scrutiny.
If Yang Chen truly wanted to pursue the matter, a third-party audit would be accurate, and they couldn’t deceive professionals.
After a moment of silence, Liang Baoguo asked, “Can’t we negotiate? We can give you a lot of money, one hundred million, five hundred million, or even one billion [yuan, approx. $14 million, $70 million, or $140 million USD], as long as you agree.”
Yang Chen replied, “Then go ahead and wait for the third-party audit. Your son should prepare for the investigation. The unpaid wages of a dozen migrant workers for a year, at least two or three million [yuan, approx. $280,000 – $420,000 USD], is enough for your son to go in and reform himself.”
With that, Yang Chen stood up, stretched, opened the door, and left.
Liang Jun looked cowardly and quickly lowered his head.
After Yang Chen left, Liang Jun rushed into the room and whispered, “Dad, what did he say to you?”
Liang Baoguo gritted his teeth, his anger growing. He slapped his son and scolded, “I warned you not to touch the subsidiary’s money, why didn’t you listen? Your mother and I give you at least 100,000 [yuan, approx. $14,000 USD] in pocket money every month, plus your own income, isn’t that enough? Why did you have to steal the wages of those migrant workers? You even asked the finance department to falsify accounts. If these are reported, you’ll go to jail. Don’t you understand the law?”
Liang Jun whined, “I thought it was our family’s company, so even if something happened, we’d handle it internally and wouldn’t be reported. I didn’t expect him to know so much and use it to threaten us.”
Liang Baoguo sighed, “If you walk by the river often, you’re bound to get your shoes wet. You can avoid the first day of the month, but you can’t avoid the fifteenth [idiom meaning you can’t escape consequences forever]. He wants me to sell all the shares to him at 90% of the current stock price. Otherwise, he’ll report you for falsifying accounts and embezzling funds, and he’ll apply for a third-party audit as a shareholder. If he does that, not only will you go to jail, but I will too.”
Liang Jun asked, “Is he being too harsh? Is there no room for negotiation?”
Liang Baoguo retorted, “Negotiate my ass! He told me to think clearly, either agree or send our father and son to jail.”
Liang Jun, about to act smart again, ran out to confront Yang Chen.
Liang Baoguo shouted after him but couldn’t stop him.
Yang Chen was admiring the view of the Bird’s Nest with Zhao Wenhui when Liang Jun stormed over and said, “Yang Chen, you’re too ruthless, aren’t you? Leave a line for others, so you can meet again in the future. We’re willing to compensate, why won’t you give us a way out?”
Liang Baoguo ran over and pulled his son back.
“Mr. Yang, I’m sorry, I spoiled him since he was a child, and he doesn’t know how to speak properly, please don’t mind,” Liang Baoguo said quickly.
Before Yang Chen could reply, Liang Jun shouted, “I’m right! Isn’t the point of being out there to make more friends and fewer enemies?”
Liang Baoguo turned and slapped him again, roaring, “Stop talking!”
Yang Chen said with a smile, “You’re not worthy of being my friends. You can leave, or I’ll call someone to throw you out.”
Liang Jun protested, “Why would you throw us out?”
Yang Chen retorted, “This is my hotel; do I need a reason to throw you out? Get out!”
Liang Jun was speechless.
Seeing Yang Chen’s firm stance, Liang Baoguo knew there was no room for negotiation, so he said, “Okay! I agree to Mr. Yang’s request. But I need you to sign a guarantee that you’ll never pursue any legal action against us.”
Yang Chen replied, “No need for a guarantee, but I can give you my word.”
Liang Baoguo nodded. “Okay! I trust Mr. Yang’s credibility. I’ll call someone to sign the equity transfer agreement with me.”
Yang Chen nodded. “Jin Ming will contact you. Take care, I won’t see you off.”
Liang Baoguo sighed and left with his son.
Originally, the Beijing Municipal Government only required Liang Baoguo to sell 20% of the shares.
Although he would no longer be the controlling shareholder, he would still be a major shareholder and remain chairman.
Of course, Yang Chen wasn’t interested in investing in Baorun Real Estate under those conditions. He wanted to gain control and appoint more capable people as chairman, hoping to lead Baorun Real Estate out of its difficulties.
Initially, Yang Chen didn’t have a clear plan to achieve this, but the migrant worker brother had provided inspiration and opportunity.
After the equity transfer agreement was signed, Yang Chen would personally take Liang Jun to pay the migrant worker brothers their wages.
Zhao Wenhui whispered, “Brother Chen, you’re amazing; you easily subdued Liang Jun and his dad. Liang Jun is usually so arrogant; he’ll be more honest in the future.”
Yang Chen replied, “No matter who it is, if they do bad things, I have a way to deal with them. You also need to be strict with yourself and keep your dad and brother in line, so don’t come begging me for mercy if something happens. I don’t easily target anyone, but once I do, it’s useless to beg. I believe in a principle: either don’t do it, or be prepared to face the consequences. If a ‘sorry’ could fix everything, why would we need to distinguish between right and wrong? Do you understand?”
Zhao Wenhui nodded quickly. “Brother Chen is right, I’ve learned a lot. Don’t worry, I’ll remind my dad and brother to be honest and do things right.”
Yang Chen nodded with a smile. “I want to enjoy the sky courtyard tonight; you can do whatever you want, I won’t see you off.”
Zhao Wenhui asked shyly, “Brother Chen, this courtyard is quite big, and you can’t possibly use all the rooms by yourself. And such a big courtyard is too deserted for you to live in alone. Why don’t I stay and keep you company?”
It was a valid point. It could be a bit scary to stay in such a large courtyard alone.
Yang Chen nodded, allowing Zhao Wenhui to stay and experience the sky courtyard with him.
Yang Chen chose the master bedroom, while Zhao Wenhui busied herself taking pictures to commemorate the occasion.
Soon, Liang Baoguo returned to his office.
After thinking uncomfortably for a while, he picked up the phone and called Jin Ming.
After Jin Ming understood the situation, she immediately booked a 7:00 p.m. flight to Beijing.
In the evening, Huang Long came to ask Yang Chen what he wanted for dinner, whether to eat in the restaurant, have it delivered, or have the chef cook on the spot.
Yang Chen suddenly wanted barbecue, so he ordered, “Go and prepare it; I want barbecue and beer tonight.”
Huang Long replied, “Okay, okay. I’ll have someone prepare it and send a professional barbecue chef for you and the lady.”
Sometimes you have to enjoy life like this, eating barbecue, drinking beer, and enjoying the view from the sky courtyard. Life is simple, but this is a dream that 99% of people can’t achieve in their lifetime.
Soon, the barbecue chef arrived with his assistant and waiter.
They brought the grill, ingredients, beer, etc.
Yang Chen and Zhao Wenhui sat at the dining table, and the barbecue chef started grilling.
This was a seven-star hotel, and since the boss, Yang Chen, wanted barbecue, the ingredients had to be carefully selected.
The beef slices were Wagyu beef, costing 5,000 yuan [approx. $700 USD] a pound at SKP [high-end department store].
There were also king crabs, Australian lobsters, and other seafood. Yang Chen usually ate these steamed, but this was his first time having them grilled.
Someone had the idea to include a lot of lamb kidneys, pig testicles, oysters, etc.
Looking at the large basin of kidneys, testicles, and other things, Yang Chen asked, “Are there a lot of these things left over today?”
The barbecue chef was honest and explained, “No, no. We carefully selected all the ingredients and would never give you leftovers. Manager Huang specifically ordered these. He said you were with a female companion, so we should grill more kidneys, oysters, etc., to help you out tonight.”
Yang Chen was instantly embarrassed.
Did he have to say that?
Zhao Wenhui’s face turned red, and she nervously chewed on the grilled beef slices.
Alas…
Seeing that the barbecue chef was honest and probably didn’t know how to read the room, Yang Chen didn’t blame him. He’d just treat it as a joke; the more he explained, the more awkward it would become.
Eating barbecue took a lot of time, and more than two hours passed.
At first, Yang Chen thought there was too much food, and he and Zhao Wenhui wouldn’t be able to finish it.
But now, he realized they had almost eaten everything.
Barbecue chef: “Mr. Yang, what else would you like to eat? I’ll have my apprentice get it.”
Yang Chen: “I’m full. Wenhui, what else would you like to eat?”
Zhao Wenhui patted her stomach. “I’m stuffed, I can’t eat anymore.”
Yang Chen: “Then we’re good. Thank you for your hard work. You can grill the rest and eat it. Have a beer and relax, and don’t do any other work today. Just leave when it’s time.”
The barbecue chef nodded happily. “Thank you, Mr. Yang.”
Then they grilled food to their liking.
Yang Chen had just entered the room and was about to lie down when Jin Ming called.
Jin Ming: “Mr. Yang, I just got out of Daxing International Airport. Where are you?”
Yang Chen: “You came so quickly. I’m in the sky courtyard of Pangu Seven Star Hotel. I’m staying here tonight. Don’t book a hotel; there are plenty of rooms here, come stay here. If you want something to eat, I’ll have someone prepare it.”
Jin Ming: “Don’t bother, I can eat when I get there. I’ll take a taxi over now, see you later.”
Jin Ming wanted to resolve the Baorun Real Estate matter quickly. Word had spread that Star Chen Investment was preparing to take control of Baorun Real Estate.
Stock speculators knew that Star Chen Investment never failed, and following their purchases always led to profits.
Therefore, Baorun Real Estate’s stock price had already begun to rise.
If they delayed, Star Chen Investment would have to pay more to gain control.
Of course, the smaller the cost, the better.
Yang Chen was dozing off when Huang Long knocked on his door with Jin Ming.
Yang Chen woke up and opened the door.
Jin Ming: “Mr. Yang, I’m here! Hehe…”
Yang Chen: “Haha… Are you alone?”
Jin Ming: “Everyone else is staying at the hotel; Manager Huang arranged it.”
Huang Long: “Mr. Yang, I’ll head back. If you need anything, call the front desk.”
Yang Chen nodded, and Huang Long left.
Jin Ming came to the window and looked toward the Bird’s Nest, praising, “This location is great; it would be amazing to live here.”
Yang Chen: “Do you want to live here? This suite isn’t for rent; you can come and stay whenever you want.”
Jin Ming: “Hehe… I’m just saying, don’t take it seriously. I need to work hard while I’m young; it’s not time for me to enjoy life yet. Can I give you my work report now? I also want to discuss tomorrow’s negotiations.”
Yang Chen nodded and listened to Jin Ming’s report.
Jin Ming’s work ethic was excellent, and Yang Chen trusted her.
She had created a comprehensive negotiation plan, and Yang Chen didn’t need to add or subtract anything.
“Very good! Follow this plan. After the business is done tomorrow, I’ll take you out for a walk and then you can go back,” Yang Chen said with a smile.
Jin Ming nodded happily. “Thank you, Mr. Yang. It’s late, you should rest. I’ll find a room.”
Yang Chen: “Someone is staying in the room on the right, so don’t go there; choose another room.”
Jin Ming: “Is it a girl? Should I stay with my colleagues at the hotel? I don’t want to intrude.”
Yang Chen: “It’s a girl, but you’re overthinking it. My feelings for her are far less than my feelings for you. I wouldn’t do anything to you, so why would I have any ideas about her? Rest assured and stay, don’t worry.”
Jin Ming was stunned, then smiled and nodded, and quickly went to choose another room.
“What did Mr. Yang mean? Does he have feelings for me? Is he just holding back because of some principle?” Jin Ming wondered.
She was overthinking it. If Yang Chen had feelings for her, he would have acted on them long ago.
Early in the morning, Jin Ming met her colleagues and took the hotel car to Baorun Real Estate headquarters.
After a long negotiation, all agreements and contracts were signed.
It was 3:00 p.m. Yang Chen drove to Baorun Real Estate headquarters to pick up Jin Ming.
The others took taxis back to the hotel or went out; they made their own arrangements.
Liang Baoguo, Liang Jun, and the financial staff walked over.
Liang Baoguo: “Mr. Yang, congratulations, you’ve finally gotten what you wanted. We’ve prepared the cash and will go to the overpass to pay the migrant workers.”
Yang Chen nodded, drove in front, Liang Jun followed closely, and the financial staff drove another car with the cash.
Over an hour later, Yang Chen arrived at the overpass where the migrant workers lived.
The migrant workers were lying on bamboo mats discussing their options. Seeing the cars, they quickly got up.
Yang Chen got out, and Brother Zhang, who had been in his car, recognized him.
“Hey? Young man, aren’t you the ride-hailing driver? What are you doing here?” Brother Zhang asked.
Yang Chen smiled. “I heard you couldn’t get your wages and felt bad seeing you waiting. I’ve recovered your wages. Line up and we’ll pay you one by one.”
The migrant workers were overjoyed and wept, kneeling to thank Yang Chen.
“Thank you.”
“Young man, you’re our savior.”
“Great, I have money for my mother’s surgery.”
Alas…
Yang Chen felt uncomfortable and helped them up. He slapped Liang Jun and scolded, “Do you see? For you, that money is for squandering. For them, it’s life-saving! Doesn’t your conscience hurt?”
Liang Baoguo didn’t dare to speak.
Liang Jun said, “Can’t I apologize?”
He bowed to the migrant workers. “Hello, brothers, uncles, I’m Liang Jun, manager of Baojiu Run Company. I’m sorry for embezzling your wages. I realize my mistake and am ashamed. I apologize for the trouble I’ve caused. I’ve brought your wages and will pay you now. I hope you can forgive me, and I hope you’ll continue to work on Baorun Real Estate projects. I’m sorry, thank you.”
Liang Jun had grown up after being slapped by Yang Chen.
His words and attitude were much better.
The migrant workers were honest. If they got their wages, they wouldn’t pursue the past. If there were job opportunities, they’d work for Baorun Real Estate.
Liang Baoguo said, “Hello, folks, I’m Liang Baoguo, chairman of Baorun Real Estate, and Liang Jun’s father. I’m ashamed I didn’t raise my son well and caused you trouble. I apologize.”
Liang Baoguo bowed deeply.
The migrant workers told him not to be polite.
Liang Baoguo continued, “I won’t be chairman for long. Mr. Yang, the ride-hailing driver, now controls the company. The bad things were caused by us, not the company. Now that Mr. Yang is in charge, I hope you’ll trust Baorun Real Estate. The first thing Mr. Yang did was settle your wages. He’s worthy of your trust.”
The migrant workers were stunned.
A ride-hailing driver controls Baorun Real Estate Group?
“Young man, did you buy Baorun Real Estate?”
“Young man, did you buy the company to help us get our wages back?”
“Brother, your kindness is too great, we can’t repay it.”
The migrant workers were going to kneel again.
Yang Chen explained, “Don’t misunderstand, I wanted to acquire Baorun Real Estate and helped you solve your wage problem. Don’t thank me so much; these wages are yours.”
The migrant workers nodded.
But they wondered how a ride-hailing driver earned the money to acquire Baorun Real Estate.
However, they wouldn’t ask questions they shouldn’t.
The financial staff paid them their wages.
Seeing the migrant workers happy, Yang Chen smiled.
Yang Chen was about to leave with Jin Ming when Brother Zhang ran over.
“Brother, wait. You’ve helped us so much, and we don’t have anything to thank you with. My wife sells egg pancakes in front of the mall. If you don’t mind, I’ll take you over and give you two egg pancakes. I’ll feel bad if I don’t express my gratitude.”
Yang Chen smiled. “I haven’t eaten egg pancakes in a long time. Thank you, Brother Zhang. Let’s go, get in the car, and go eat egg pancakes.”
Brother Zhang was excited and got into Yang Chen’s car, leading the way to his wife.
At the mall,
Yang Chen’s ex-girlfriend Zhao Feifei and her friend Chen Xinyi came out after shopping.
Yang Chen had taught these two a lesson in Haicheng, and they had come to Beijing to make a living.
Using their green tea skills [being manipulative and appearing innocent], they were comfortable in a group of Beijing rich second generations, making connections and money.
