Becoming the Squirrel Who Saves the Villain – Episode 10
I Became the Squirrel Who Saves the Villain Episode 10
I could feel the strength in Johan’s hand that was holding me. Tezen’s words, ‘my squirrel,’ seemed to have touched a nerve.
If I could speak, I would have said something like this:
‘Who do you think you are? Hey, know your place. You’re not a war hero yet.’
But I couldn’t speak.
‘Please don’t let me start acting like a nuisance, claiming that this squirrel is purifying me. That would ruin everything.’
I sensed the tension in the air around the table and quickly thought.
‘Or please don’t let me unleash my hidden powers and start reciting lines like the strongest character in the world.’
You’re not the main character. Not the strongest in the world yet either.
If you act up here without even calming your magic, you don’t know what you’ll face.
The Duke’s servants had obviously all been under Ella’s control for a long time, and Johan was too weak to even take care of himself.
‘But why do you have that face like you’re about to say something cheesy…’
However, there was no telling what a teenager going through puberty might do.
Right now, the weakest people in the Duke’s mansion, Johan and I, would benefit most from quietly lying low and helping each other out secretly at night.
‘It’s going to be difficult if a variable occurs here.’
So, I quickly racked my brain.
It was much more likely that I would get away with causing trouble than Johan.
‘At least I’m expensive.’
Ella had given almost all of her personal fortune to the temple to buy me.
So, she wouldn’t easily kill me or kick me out. “Kyung.”
‘Okay, I’ll take the blame.’
I snuggled further into Johan’s hand and turned my head away from Tezen as if to say I wouldn’t go.
The moment I curled up inside Johan’s arms, his expression softened instantly.
On the other hand, Tezen, who had been reaching out to get me back from Johan, frowned for a moment, startled.
“Ah, this slave, no, this Blackie…”
Tezen quickly glanced at Meriel and said defensively.
“He’s a bit dumb, doesn’t really understand what I’m saying… and he’s a bit prickly.”
To be branded as dumb, it was a pity I couldn’t speak.
I’m probably much smarter than Tezen, though…
“Oh, is he prickly?”
Meriel blinked and asked innocently, and Tezen immediately replied.
“Yes. No matter what I say, he just buries his head like that and doesn’t even pretend to listen. He spends almost every day curled up in a corner, just sleeping…”
Tezen clicked his tongue and continued.
“Come to think of it, he never came when I called him anyway, so it’s not surprising.”
That’s right, I’m naturally prickly.
In fact, considering my soul’s capabilities, a squirrel wasn’t a very fitting animal.
At least if I had been a violent sparrow, I could have attacked by pecking with my beak.
Sadly, my claws had been trimmed to the quick at the temple, so there wasn’t a single sharp part on my body.
As I nodded as if to agree with his words, Meriel murmured quietly.
“Still, he’s cute…”
But surprisingly, at Tezen’s words, Johan’s hand gradually loosened.
‘This, this…’
I narrowed my eyes and looked at Johan’s face, which seemed somewhat pleased.
He had the expression of a well-fed beast, which didn’t suit his pale complexion.
‘He seems to like it when Tezen insults me?’
Johan looked down at me quietly and even smiled slightly. It seemed like he meant I was doing well.
‘What? Don’t smile at me like you know everything. What do you know about a squirrel’s heart?’
I huffed and pushed his hand away with my hind paw, acting coy. It was time to wrap up this whole situation.
The hand that had been so firmly gripping me when Tezen gestured to me was pushed away far too easily.
“Kyugung.”
I haughtily crossed the table and sat on Tezen’s shoulder.
‘I’ll end the situation by becoming a slightly dumb divine creature.’
I was a little tired from thinking so quickly, so I rubbed my head with both hands.
‘I want to become human soon. My capabilities are too great to live as a squirrel.’
If I had possessed even a young lady from a decent family…
With this quick judgment and determined personality, I could have made any family, no matter what, much more prosperous than the Hyrard Dukedom.
After many twists and turns, the meal began. I felt strangely proud watching Johan eat the warm soup, and I looked at him with a grandmotherly smile, as if watching my grandson come to the countryside.
‘He looks a mess, but it’s good to see him eating properly. It seems like he only eats cold food in the tower.’
During the somewhat peaceful meal, small talk was exchanged.
“So… is there still no news about your second daughter? Or Duke Medest?”
“Yes… Actually, the Duke’s disappearance during the war is unavoidable, but the case of my second daughter is too heartbreaking.”
Duke Medest’s wife answered with a bitter smile to Ella’s question.
“The temple says it’s a curse on the Medest Dukedom… it’s too terrible. I hope it’s just a coincidence.”
Duke Medest’s wife sighed deeply and murmured.
From what I gathered, child disappearances had been frequent in the Medest Dukedom since ancient times.
It usually occurred in the direct line, but sometimes it also affected the collateral lines.
In particular, the first child had never disappeared, and only the second or third children somehow vanished.
Ella tried to hide her curious eyes and asked again.
“No, didn’t you take precautions since such rumors have been passed down from ancient times?”
Duke Medest’s wife sighed slightly as if it were difficult to say, but she couldn’t ignore the question.
“After giving birth to my second daughter, who was the same age as our Meriel… I was so anxious that I only raised her inside the Duke’s residence.”
Tears began to well up in her pink eyes.
“But she had to be baptized, so I had no choice but to go to the temple on her first birthday… and we encountered bandits. And only my second child…”
“Mother.”
Meriel held Duke Medest’s trembling hand tightly and said.
“Please go to the restroom for a while. I think you need to sort out your emotions.”
Of course, Meriel’s eyes were also filled with tears as she said those words.
She didn’t seem to know her sister’s face, but she always seemed to think sadly about this situation.
‘Seriously, Ella… you really have no tact. There are things that are interesting to dig into and things that aren’t…’
I clicked my tongue inwardly and slowly wagged my tail.
‘The second daughter disappeared on the way to the temple… so Meriel is the only daughter and the sole heir. And then Duke Medest went to war.’
Anyway, as Duke Medest’s wife went to the restroom, providing an opportunity to change the subject, Meriel immediately looked at me again and said.
“There are no wizards in Medest, so I don’t know much about divine creatures… but I heard that divine creatures can transform into humans if they have strong magic, right? It’s amazing.”
Showing interest in me meant giving Tezen a chance to show off, which was an effective way to change the subject.
As expected, Tezen boasted and replied.
“Ah, so my mother asked the temple about it when she first brought the divine creature. In case he might transform into a human because of my magic.”
He really had big dreams. You’d think he was a great wizard just by listening to him.
I shook my head and made eye contact with Johan, who was looking at me.
“But the temple said that divine creatures don’t even have the will to transform into humans, so it’s very difficult. They instinctively prefer the body of a beast.”
What is he talking about? How strong is my will to transform into a human? I scratched my ear with my forepaw.
“Ah, I see. That’s amazing. So there are hardly any divine creatures that have transformed into humans.”
While Meriel nodded, Johan smiled at me as if sending a secret signal.
Well… Johan is the only person who has seen me transform into a human, so all this conversation must be funny to him, just like me.
‘What, but why is he smiling so beautifully?’
And I realized one more thing.
Johan really had no interest in Meriel. He didn’t even glance at her out of courtesy.
‘Girls or whatever… is calming down that good? That must have been his top priority.’
According to the original story, Johan would fall in love with Meriel after the war, when he was free from the magical rampage.
‘Yeah, don’t even start a doomed love from the beginning. Just live your life regardless.’
I filled my cheeks with the sunflower seeds that the servant brought and thought while chewing.
‘What’s even more amazing is Meriel’s body. It’s really strange. Can she really calm her magic down like that on her own?’
It wasn’t in the original story at all, but it was still amazing. She didn’t seem to know it herself… ‘Well, it’s none of my business.’
That strange meal ended without incident.
