Becoming a Squirrel to Save the Villain 2
1. A Cranky Squirrel
John, having spotted me, slowly approached the window. It was tightly shut, leaving no room to enter. “Squeak.”
I knocked on the window again. “What’s a squirrel doing all the way up here…”
With a bewildered expression, John slowly opened the window. And then…
‘Wow, this is no joke.’
The moment the window opened, I was so taken aback by the immense magical power that I almost dropped the acorn I was holding.
It was an overwhelming force, incomparable to Tezen’s mediocre magic.
Moreover, this vast magic was raging wildly within his body, causing internal injuries all over.
‘That must hurt like hell, oh my god.’
Without realizing it, I raised my front paw and placed it on John’s forehead.
Of course, the way to calm this immense magic was through contact.
There were times when a single treatment was more effective than a hundred words.
This was one of those moments. John’s eyes widened once more, then languidly closed.
He must have been extremely comfortable with the power of tranquility he was experiencing for the first time in his life.
“You…”
Only after a long while did John move his lips as if whispering, and then spoke.
“…You’re a divine beast.”
As expected, being a mage himself, he seemed to know about the existence of divine beasts.
A blessed creature of the temple that could calm raging magical power.
The legendary squirrel known to be able to transform into a human if it received immense magic.
I, too, felt John’s raging magic entering my body. It was a truly unfamiliar sensation.
‘Am I going to turn into a human right away because of this?’
I thought, aware of his magic beginning to ripple through my body.
‘This feeling is really strange.’
It was an incomparably greater surge than when I had absorbed a bit of Tezen’s magic earlier.
But anyway, there was a limit to the amount of magic I could absorb.
From a certain point, I instinctively felt, ‘No more.’
I crammed the fully raging magic into my body and took my paw off.
John’s purple eyes slowly opened as well. He looked at the black rose engraved on my chest and frowned, saying,
“Seeing the mark of Hyrard… are you Tezen’s divine beast?”
As expected, our villain boy had good reasoning skills and was quick on the uptake.
Well, you can’t be the greatest villain in the world if you’re stupid or oblivious.
Since I couldn’t speak, I had no choice but to nod readily. John muttered with confused eyes.
“But why here, to me…”
It seemed he hadn’t become a complete villain yet, so his basic intelligence was a bit lacking.
I shrugged and replied.
“Squeak.”
If I could properly answer your questions, would I be a human, not a divine beast?
“Ah. Right, you can’t talk.”
John sheepishly added. I nodded in agreement.
Sadly, I didn’t know the letters of this world, so I couldn’t communicate in writing either.
John stared at me intently, then smiled slightly and asked.
“Anyway, thank you, really. Can I stroke your head, by any chance?”
There was no harm in it.
I readily nodded, and he very carefully raised his index finger and stroked my forehead.
‘His personality is not bad?’
Compared to when Tezen poked my back, this was a very gentle touch.
Even his face stirred a sense of protection…
His hair, as black as the night sky, and his mysteriously shining purple eyes were beautiful.
He had a completely different vibe from Tezen, who had the same black hair.
His delicate, sculpted face and white skin made him look like a noble from a fairy tale.
He smiled bashfully and said.
“Thanks to you, I didn’t feel pain for the first time. It was only for a moment… but it was really nice.”
“Squeak.”
I stared at him with a pitiful expression.
Of course, even if I had calmed him down for a moment, his magic was so immense that the effect wouldn’t last long.
Originally, I had come with the goal of somehow absorbing that immense magic and becoming human.
But when I actually faced John, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of sympathy.
Ugh, I’m so unnecessarily kind…
I just felt so sorry for this boy, trapped in the tower and writhing in pain alone.
He had such a handsome appearance and gentle way of speaking that I couldn’t imagine he would later become a villain who would obsess over the heroine and plot all sorts of evil deeds.
“Thank you, really.”
John slowly stroked my back and smiled sadly.
“Actually, it’s also the first time someone has stayed with me this long when I’m in pain…”
It hasn’t even been 10 minutes since I got here, and he says this is a long time?
Why is he so heartbreaking?
Even though the calming effect was probably gone, I sighed and placed my front paw on his forehead.
He’s enduring this pain alone, so he’s becoming twisted and turning into a villain. He was originally a kind and pure child.
Well, even if it seems like too much of a leap, looking at John’s face immediately made it rational.
And what if it’s a leap? The fact is that I need his magic.
In a way, we were essential to each other.
“Could you… come again?”
John whispered, looking into my eyes.
“You don’t have to calm me down. Just put your paw on me like this… no, just come to see me…”
His eyes were so clear and innocent that I nodded as if I were possessed.
Oh my god… how could I cruelly shake my head at such a pitiful child?
Of course, I also had to achieve my goal of somehow absorbing his magic and becoming human…
Having spent his whole life alone, this boy quickly became dependent on the suddenly appearing squirrel, and I quickly felt sympathy for him.
‘Okay, I’ll really be good to him.’
So, just 10 minutes after meeting John, I made a decision.
‘Let’s protect this pure and tender heart. If even one person gives him love and attention, this child won’t become twisted.’
If that happens, the heroine won’t have to suffer from his obsessive behavior, and the world won’t be manipulated by the villain’s schemes, so wouldn’t it become a slightly better place to live?
John carefully added with trembling eyes.
“I don’t want you to be in danger, so be careful not to get caught…”
“Of course.”
I thumped my chest as if to say not to worry.
The black rose mark on my chest was very annoying, but John could also erase it.
Because John was also a person from Hyrard [likely referring to someone affiliated with the Duchy of Hyrard].
‘I should ask John to erase it before he’s dragged into the war later.’
It would be even better if I could become human before that, but if I can’t, I was thinking of asking him to erase it so I could follow him into the war.
There was no chance I would meet someone with this much magic again in this world.
‘And I’m definitely going to become human.’
I was originally human, after all!
Worried that Tezen might wake up in the middle and look for me, I pointed outside the window to indicate that I had to leave soon.
I had to move cautiously because it was only my first day here and I didn’t know Tezen’s sleeping habits.
“Okay.”
John seemed to understand that I was leaving, and he tapped my cheek and smiled.
“I’ll always leave the window open from tomorrow night.”
“Squeak?”
“It means I’ll be waiting.”
What a guy, so cute.
I raised my front paw and tapped John’s cheek just like he did. And then I held out the acorn.
It was my own way of giving a meeting gift.
“This is… isn’t this yours? Are you giving it to me?”
Actually, it was the least tasty of my food, so I brought it, but anyway, I nodded confidently.
And I quickly slipped out the window and headed back to Tezen’s room.
Vowing to come to this pitiful villain boy again tomorrow night.
* * *
John watched the receding figure of the squirrel from the window.
The squirrel divine beast, who had appeared like a lie and temporarily relieved his pain, disappeared into Tezen’s room.
“Ah.”
The pure and pitiful look he had when he saw the squirrel divine beast earlier disappeared, and a languid and seductive aura began to linger on his face.
“I wonder if it will come again.”
The power of tranquility he tasted for the first time in his life was amazing.
It was like a paradise briefly granted to him, who had lived in pain since he was a child he couldn’t even remember.
A fantastic and blissful sensation that he didn’t want to miss again, even if he had to rely on pity by pretending to be pitiful…
Right now, his magic was raging too much inside his body, so he couldn’t use proper magic.
If he could use magic, he would have turned this entire mansion upside down and brought that squirrel divine beast.
But trapped in this room and unable to do anything, his best option was just to rely on the unknown favor of that squirrel divine beast.
The sudden appearance of the squirrel divine beast’s calming ability was like salvation to him.
If his magic was refined a bit, he might be able to use magic, and if that happened, there would be no reason to stay in the remote tower of the Hyrard ducal family.
For that to happen, this meeting had to continue. It would be a problem if it was just a temporary whim of the squirrel.
To that end, he had carefully chosen only words that would stimulate all sorts of pity…
John groaned in the pain that began to surge through his body again and fell into thought.
Even so, he didn’t let go of the acorn the squirrel had given him.
He had to come up with a way to make him a little more special to that squirrel.
So that he would think of him often and come to him every night, so that he could become more special than Tezen, so that he couldn’t abandon him.
So the next night, when that squirrel divine beast appeared at his window again, John greeted him with a bright smile.
“You came again, kind divine beast.”
“Squeak.”
And when the squirrel held out its front paw, John, instead of putting his forehead against it, deliberately smiled with his eyes and said.
“I want to give you a name.”
