141. Cha Ki-beom’s Reward (1)
“This is too much!”
So Sori couldn’t hold back any longer and stormed out.
A silence fell over the hall.
Looking around, Skinny and Song Chang-jun quickly ran after So Sori.
Secretary Song quietly sipped his liquor.
‘That girl thinks she’s so smart, but when it comes to love, she’s utterly clueless. Judging by the look of things, she’s been suffering alone all this time, tsk tsk.’
Secretary Song stared blankly at the bottle of Scotch and the plate of fruit in front of him.
Han-soo and Tae-soo quietly drank their liquor.
‘Oh, this is frustrating.’
A father’s heart aches terribly for his daughter.
The liquor goes down very smoothly.
“Ahem, ahem.”
Just then, Kim Gwang-rok rummaged through his belongings.
He placed a gun on the table in front of Secretary Song.
Following the large sword, dagger, awl, and spare magazines, he even put up grenades and smoke bombs.
“How can you win a beauty’s heart with mere liquor and snacks? It takes at least this much.”
Secretary Song looked back and forth between the weapons piled on the table and Kim Gwang-rok.
“How about a sturdy son-in-law?”
Kim Gwang-rok, a 2-meter giant flexing his muscles, was blushing.
* * *
Secretary Song ended up completely drunk.
He kept pouring liquor down his throat while waiting for his daughter to return and eventually couldn’t even stand properly.
Tae-soo and Han-soo supported him on either side and took him to his hotel room.
Sweat poured down like rain.
‘Wow, the power of 130 kilograms…’
‘It’s tough even with a combined 450 on the three major lifts. A drunk person is several times heavier, they say.’
They barely managed to get Secretary Song onto the bed, but he suddenly jumped up.
He waved his finger in the air and shouted in a slurred voice.
“What’s wrong with my daughter! She’s pretty, smart, capable, and thrifty!”
“Yes, yes.”
Han-soo replied half-heartedly.
“There’s a line of excellent grooms waiting for her. Isn’t that right?”
“Yes, yes.”
Frankly, Song Sori was a smart and talented individual.
Secretary Song choked up.
“Give up! Just give up! There are grooms all over the place!”
Secretary Song kicked into the air while ranting drunkenly.
Tae-soo took Han-soo and left the room.
Secretary Song sighed as he looked at the closed door.
“What’s so great about a guy who’s so focused on work that he doesn’t even notice women?”
That was the reason he was drinking so heavily.
“If she had chosen someone else, she would have lived a comfortable life. Why is her standard so high?”
It’s understandable.
Once you see that guy, no one else will catch your eye.
“I told her it was dangerous in Korea, but she packed her bags and ran off. What has she been doing for the past six months?”
Between a man and a woman, they should be building a Great Wall [a metaphor for a strong relationship] in one night.
She risked her life to come here, and what is this?
No matter how hard I look, there’s no sweetness between them.
“She must have been working herself to death here instead of him. The pile of documents on her desk was huge.”
He grabbed the back of his neck when he saw the hotel room where his daughter was staying.
She must have been working all night, wiping away nosebleeds.
“You foolish girl. If you like him that much, you should have offered your body instead of working yourself to death.”
His mouth feels bitter.
His stomach aches too.
“What’s the point of letting a pretty face and a well-shaped body rot? What’s the point of cherishing a body that will rot when you die?”
They’re going to and from the hotel together, but what have they been doing?
Even though the hotel is a lodging facility, they’re using it only as a lodging facility in the most wholesome way.
Use it unhealthily like everyone else!
Why are these burning youths living like old people!
“If she had the courage to run away out of embarrassment, she would have thrown herself at him, risking embarrassment.”
So, she should just give up.
It’s a waste of youth that won’t come again.

The newspapers were full of stories about foreign banks investing in domestic banks.
State Street Bank of the United States decides to invest heavily in Hanse Bank and Daehong Bank!>
Manchester Bank of the United Kingdom invests in Segwang Bank and Togeon Bank!>
Hong Kong Baidu Bank invests in Jeongil Bank, Miju Bank, and Dogyeong Bank!>
Japan’s Shinseikai Bank acquires Gwangmyeong Bank, Taesang Bank, and Mokma Bank!>
Tae-soo folded the newspaper.
“Things are progressing smoothly since Secretary Song joined us.”
Secretary Song Chang-jun took the newspaper from Tae-soo.
“Kang Han-soo is actively meeting with bank presidents.”
“How many banks are left?”
“Let’s see, a total of seven, excluding Chomyung Bank and Jangsu Bank. I’ve made appointments in advance, so we can meet with all the bank presidents within three days.”
“Very good.”
Tae-soo looked around the apartment construction site.
The model house was being built quickly.
In just ten days, the woodwork and tiling were finished.
“Chairman!”
Park Cheol-wan, who was giving work instructions inside the model house, greeted Tae-soo happily.
“How much progress has been made on the interior?”
“The electrical work will be completely finished by this morning.”
“When can we finish the interior finishing?”
“It will take a few days. We expect to finish within fifteen days.”
“I wish we could move it up even a few days, but is that not possible?”
“I’ll see what I can do. Wallpaper, flooring, lights, and sinks can be done with night work.”
“Good.”
Park Cheol-wan always satisfies Tae-soo.
He does his job well.
Tae-soo turned to the interior team leader.
“How about the lighting?”
“We’ve deployed the staff. They’re going around to lighting stores looking for it.”
“So you still haven’t found it? It’s already been ten days?”
Tae-soo’s eyes turned cold, and the team leader stammered.
“You want such luxurious lighting. And it’s not just one or two lights…”
“Enough.”
Tae-soo cut off the excuses.
“The things that are visible, the parts we need to pay the most attention to in order to look like a luxurious home, because we need to capture their attention.”
“…Yes.”
“Lighting is life on the screen. Lighting not only brings characters and backgrounds to life but also contributes to the indirect atmosphere. There’s a reason why they shine reflected light on actresses.”
Tae-soo didn’t stop.
“It’s not just the screen that will be captured by the camera. Women dream of having sparkling, luxurious lighting in their homes.”
“…Yes.”
“Why are we building a model house? To sell the house. In the end, we have to move the hearts of the people who will buy the house. Don’t forget that lighting plays a big role.”
“Yes.”
“It’s a lavishly luxurious rich house. We need to pay special attention to the lighting, from crystal chandeliers to indirect and direct lighting.”
Tae-soo continued with the next question.
“What about the furniture?”
“That’s still…”
He’s dissatisfied.
The team leader in charge of the interior bowed his head.
“If you really don’t know, go around to hotels. Then you’ll get a sense of what kind of lighting and furniture to use and how to use it.”
“I will keep that in mind.”
As soon as Tae-soo finished speaking, the interior team leader moved quickly.
After that, Tae-soo gave separate instructions to each team.
The employee who was writing down Tae-soo’s words was sweating profusely.
There’s too much to do.
It was when Tae-soo was moving from the studio work site to the apartment construction site.
“Chairman.”
Song Chang-jun called out to Tae-soo.
“Chief of Presidential Security Cha Ki-beom has arrived.”
Tae-soo nodded, taking off his safety helmet.
“Where is he?”
“He’s waiting in the container.”
Tae-soo hurried to the container.
* * *
The inside of the container was decorated for the rest and meals of the workers.
Cha Ki-beom was sitting in a chair, drinking a cup of tea.
It was the tea that Song Chang-jun had brought out before calling Tae-soo.
“Chief Cha.”
“Sit down.”
As Tae-soo sat down in the opposite chair, Song Chang-jun poured a cup of tea for Tae-soo as well.
Cha Ki-beom smiled, slightly raising his teacup.
“Your secretary makes tea quite well.”
Song Chang-jun shrugged his shoulders.
He’s the man Secretary Song insisted would be good at housework.
He certainly does the dishes well, makes tea well, and cooks quite well.
“You sent me generals.”
Cha Ki-beom put down his teacup.
“You did me a favor. Thanks to you, I didn’t have to go all the way to Chungcheong and Gangwon.”
“You’re welcome.”
It was something he had to do sometime to keep Jeon Doo-hwan in check.
But he couldn’t go while neglecting his presidential security duties.
Cha Ki-beom was waiting for the opportunity.
“You’re very talented. Army Chief of Staff Lee Se-hoo, 1st Field Army Commander Jeong Seung-hwan, Capital Defense Command Chief of Staff Jang Tae-won.”
“I was lucky.”
“Luck? Is this something that can be done with luck?”
Cha Ki-beom leaned back in his chair.
His eyes were full of admiration as he looked at Tae-soo.
“The generals said the same thing. They said you only answered the questions you were asked.”
Cha Ki-beom stroked his chin.
There was admiration in his eyes as he looked at Tae-soo.
“They’re not easy people to deal with, but they praised you highly. They said it would have been nice if you had entered the military academy. They were so sorry to have missed out on such talent.”
Cha Ki-beom clasped his hands together and leaned forward.
He looked at Tae-soo and smiled, looking very satisfied.
“I can’t believe it. There are days when those stubborn people come running to me first.”
“It was something that could have been done with a single phone call from Chief Cha, even without me.”
“If that were possible, I wouldn’t be here now.”
Cha Ki-beom laughed loudly.
“Is Army Chief of Staff Lee Se-hoo an easy person to deal with? If I had called, he would have warned me not to interfere in military affairs. We would have just ended up red-faced.”
The Army Chief of Staff has his pride.
No matter how strong the power of the Chief of Presidential Security is, he can’t control even the top leader in the military with his fingers.
“To accomplish such a difficult task so easily. If I had gone through you sooner, I wouldn’t have had to worry so much.”
How could he forget the moment when the generals bowed their heads first and asked to put their heads together?
It was as refreshing as if the accumulated stagnation had gone down.
“That’s why I like you. If I had a daughter, I would have given her to you right away.”
This man is saying something that could cause big trouble!
Cha Ki-beom stared at Tae-soo.
“It’s amazing. You clearly don’t say a single proper flattery. You don’t offer bribes for favors, and you don’t draw people in to create factions…”
Cha Ki-beom smiled, pulling up the corners of his mouth.
“Everyone is 넘어가다 [taken in/charmed] by you. Me too.”
Tae-soo just quietly took a sip of tea.
“You put wings on my back, so how should I repay you?”
“I didn’t do it expecting a reward, but…”
“But I benefited from it. It was a benefit that can never be called small.”
Cha Ki-beom said calmly as he drank his tea.
“The generals promised to give me strength.”
Jeon Doo-hwan and Cha Ki-beom were in conflict over Park Jeong-hwan.
“They were stubborn people who had shown me more wariness than favor until now.”
They were close to Park Tae-jong, who could be called Park Jeong-hwan’s confidant, but they were not close to Cha Ki-beom.
“It’s like I’ve gained a thousand troops and horses. To think that the Army Chief of Staff and the 1st Field Army Commander, who had been so aloof, would reach out to me first.”
The Army generals, who could be said to be Jeon Doo-hwan’s superiors, stood behind Cha Ki-beom.
“Army Chief of Staff Lee Se-hoo suppressed Jeon Doo-hwan this time so that he couldn’t even make a peep.”
It was very welcome news.
“Do you know that Jeon Doo-hwan insisted on reporting directly to the President?”
He knows it well.
It was a matter that Jeon Doo-hwan had publicly stated in front of Cha Ki-beom.
“I heard that the Army Chief of Staff called Jeon Doo-hwan and slapped him in the face.”
Saying he didn’t recognize the hierarchy and was running wild.
He scolded him, saying that he didn’t even see the Army Chief of Staff in his eyes and caused trouble in a crowded place.
Hey you, if you refuse to follow orders, I’ll throw you in 영창 [military prison], he threatened. How could Jeon Doo-hwan refuse?
Ha ha ha.”
Even if the Oseonghoe [a private military club], protected by Park Jeong-hwan, cannot be touched rashly, the Army Chief of Staff is not someone who cannot shout loudly anywhere.
“Thanks to you, Jeon Doo-hwan’s desired face-to-face report went down the drain. That bastard will have to report to me from now on. It’s all thanks to you.”
Out of sight, out of power.
Meeting the President is power.
What Jeon Doo-hwan had so desired became a bubble.
“So, what can I do for you?”
If meeting the President is power, how much power does the Chief of Security, who is with the President 24 hours a day, have?
“Just tell me. I’ll repay you handsomely.”
Tae-soo smiled.
“Do I have to ask for only one thing? Can’t I ask for two?”
Cha Ki-beom laughed loudly.
“Good! Tell me!”
He’s so cool and 시원시원해서 좋다 [refreshing/easygoing, I like it].
