“Did Heo Gang-su tell you to say that?”
“He has nothing to do with this. I have nothing more to say. Guard!”
The man, bursting with anger, jumped up from his seat.
“I have nothing to say to these people, let’s go in.”
“Ah….”
The guard looked at Park Do-joon, seemingly perplexed. He knew they were police. Even if they weren’t here for an investigation, he couldn’t just send them away.
However, Park Do-joon waved his hand as if to say not to worry, and the guard led the man out.
“Suddenly, another victim?”
“I was just probing.”
“Just probing?”
“Yes. But it’s certain that there are other victims.”
“How did you know?”
“No criminal confesses to all their crimes, especially not when they’re taking the blame for someone else’s crimes.”
It is human instinct to minimize one’s losses. Even those who extend a hand to others out of kindness or make donations don’t do it because they enjoy losing.
There is always an emotional gain that makes it worth enduring the loss.
However, there is no benefit to taking the blame for someone else.
“Especially in a situation like this.”
They were expelled from the cult, and the leader disappeared.
Even if they maintain their religious faith, there is no reason to endure additional losses.
“The same goes for back then. Would those guys really take the blame for crimes that weren’t exposed, let alone the ones that were?”
“Are you suggesting… that there are more deaths?”
“Yes.”
Park Do-joon nodded.
“That’s why I probed a little. If there were no more victims, he would have reacted with disbelief.”
But he reacted sensitively and left the scene instead.
“Usually, in such cases, they avoid the situation out of fear of making a mistake.”
“So, avoiding the situation itself is a mistake.”
“Yes. And this tells us one more thing.”
“What is it?”
“The main culprit is someone else. Probably Heo Gang-su.”
“What? How do you know? I didn’t say anything.”
“That man isn’t the intelligent type.”
If he were intelligent, or even just had an average level of intelligence, he would have responded innocently, ‘What are you talking about?’
“But he reacted extremely.”
In other words, he’s not the type to think deeply.
“And those types don’t easily break free once they’ve been brainwashed.”
“‘Words carved in stone last a thousand years,’ is that it?”
“Hmm, an apt analogy. That’s right. Because they lack intelligence, their response to external stimuli is slow. Betrayal is only possible when you’re smart.”
Surprisingly, betrayal is an act that only highly intelligent people can commit. People with inherently low intelligence can’t betray.
Even if they want to, they’re afraid of how to respond because of the numerous variables.
“The police must have investigated the other crimes back then, right?”
“Of course, they would have investigated. But it’s not easy. In fact, even with just one lawyer, it’s easy to defend against that, isn’t it?”
“That’s true.”
It is the police’s responsibility to prove the crime. No matter how much the police shout that someone is guilty, if they can’t prove it, punishment is impossible.
If a profiler had been involved back then, they could have quickly recognized the lies, but according to the records from that time, there is no record of a profiler being involved.
“If we’re lucky, we might be able to tie that case to Heo Gang-su.”
Park Do-joon said, calculating the possibilities in his head.
“If we can find it, that is.”
“Yes. If we can find it….”
And he pondered the biggest problem.
#The Fear of a Traitor
The Universe God Church incident. A cult, the Universe God Church, kidnapped and murdered people who were trying to leave the church.
The Universe God Church had taken over a defunct prayer center in the countryside and was living communally inside. And like any other cult, the followers had given all their assets to them and were also providing labor.
In return, the Universe God Church operated in a form that mixed religion and communism, allowing them to make a living.
Then, conflicts arose with people trying to get their families out of there. When families came to rescue their loved ones who had fallen into the Universe God Church, fights broke out with the followers.
If it were a normal religion, they would have just let them go or called them in and calmly talked to them, but the Universe God Church mobilized its followers and clashed with them using force. In the process, one person trying to escape and the parents who came to pick them up were killed.
The Universe God Church buried the three bodies in a nearby mountain, and the incident seemed to be forgotten. No one within the cult would report it.
However, the brother of the deceased, who knew that his parents had gone to pick up their child at the time, reported it to the police, and the investigation began. Eventually, as rumors spread, people whose families were being held captive flocked to the scene.
The conclusion was that the murders were committed by some followers who lost their temper while Heo Gang-su was away on business, and Heo Gang-su was imprisoned for fraud in the process.
“This is the Universe God Church, or rather, the Galaxy Order now.”
Park Do-joon arrived at the scene of the Universe God Church with Kim Seong-gyun.
“No matter how I look at it, it doesn’t look like a religious organization.”
“It’s more like a prison facility that secures labor through brainwashing than a religious organization.”
A wall surrounded the area, and the gate was firmly locked.
A guard post was set up at the entrance, and two people were glaring at them with fierce eyes.
“What do you think?”
“Well, concealing additional murders is easy.”
The bond is strong, and they are thoroughly exclusive to outsiders. In a place like this, it’s not difficult to hide a murder even if it happens inside.
“The last incident would have been covered up if it hadn’t been reported.”
In fact, when such an incident occurs, one should assume that there are additional victims and search accordingly.
‘But that wasn’t done properly in the last case.’
Whether it was because the opposing lawyer was skilled or because the police were incompetent, this is clearly the police’s mistake.
‘Of course, I understand why.’
Generally, serial killers have a habit of burying bodies in a fixed location. They bury the bodies in one place and visit it to reminisce about the past and seek the stimulation of that time.
‘But this guy isn’t like that.’
Unlike serial killers who kill for personal pleasure, those who kill people who go against their interests tend to hide the bodies as much as possible.
If he’s smart, he’ll separate the bodies and bury them. And keep them quite a distance apart.
That way, even if one is caught, the others won’t be, ensuring safety. So, in these cases, you have to search the entire mountain unless the perpetrator tells you where they are buried, but realistically, the chances of finding the body that way aren’t high.
It’s obvious that they’re buried, but you can’t dig up all the land, and the area around this prayer center is all forest. Moreover, some of the land has different owners, so you have to get permission from those owners to excavate, but surprisingly, mountain owners don’t often grant excavation permission.
Because it’s unsettling if a body comes out of there.
“So, you’re saying there are unexposed bodies inside there.”
“Yes.”
“But will they help us?”
In any case, they are quite hostile to the police. In fact, a cult itself cannot be friendly to the police. That’s why they’re glaring at them with fierce eyes as they approach.
“Ah, they’ll help us.”
“Why?”
“Because they’re not the Universe God Church, but the Galaxy Order.”
Kim Seong-gyun tilted his head at Park Do-joon’s words.
“Let’s go in for now.”
Park Do-joon slowly headed towards the entrance. Then, one of the two people who had been glaring at them from inside narrowed his eyes and said.
“This is private property. Bring a warrant if you want to come in.”
“We’re here for cooperation.”
“We don’t want to get involved with the police.”
Kim Seong-gyun was worried inside, seeing them cut him off so bluntly.
‘They won’t even open the door, let alone investigate.’
Of course, Park Do-joon knows that too. But conversely, it’s not impossible to talk to them in a way that they have no choice but to help.
“You’ll regret it, though? I don’t think you’re in a position to judge that.”
“What?”
“If the leader is about to be dragged away for murder and you just let it happen, what do you think the leader will say?”
At those words, the two men’s eyes wavered. Because it was an unexpected remark.
“What nonsense! Our leader wouldn’t do that!”
There was an undeniable fear in the man’s eyes as he said that.
‘That’s right. You’d be scared.’
A normal follower can’t take the place of a cult member who has fallen. At least someone similar or even worse will take their place.
‘Just look here.’
Barbed wire surrounds the perimeter, and a guard stands guard at the entrance.
‘But the situation is a little different.’
At first glance, it seems like they’re guarding against people coming in from the outside, but the truth is a bit different.
First of all, just look at the location of the guard post installed for security.
The guard post faces inward, and the gaze of the people watching is also focused inward. And the CCTV is the same. It operates in a way that monitors the inside, not the outside.
‘There are two reasons for that kind of method.’
To defend against movement inside. Or to prevent people from leaving the inside.
‘Of course, it’s the latter.’
This is a place where there’s no reason for outsiders to come in.
It’s not a wealthy neighborhood or anything, and there’s no reason for anyone to come here.
Furthermore, given the nature of religious groups that provide collective lodging and meals, people who come in from the outside are easily noticeable.
‘There’s nothing to worry about except the police coming with a warrant.’
And if the police come with a warrant, surveillance is ineffective.
‘All of this is to prevent internal people from going outside.’
Would such a guy be a normal leader? No way.
‘A person’s anxiety is revealed in their behavior patterns. Hehehe!’
Would a person who tries to control his followers like this try to cause a problem that would put the blame on himself? No, if someone came with evidence related to it, would he just leave the guard who ignored it alone?
“Hmm….”
As expected, the guard seemed to hesitate for a moment and then picked up his phone.
“Wait a moment.”
The man who said that to Park Do-joon went inside the guard post and seemed to be talking on the phone. After a while, three people came out from inside.
“Hello? My name is Lee Won-seung, and I’m an elder of the Galaxy Order.”
“My name is Park Do-joon.”
“But you said you had something to tell us?”
“Ah, well, it’s a bit difficult to say it here….”
Park Do-joon said, looking at the two people standing guard. Lee Won-seung glanced at the two of them and said.
