Ep. 104
Trip Day.
We both had trouble falling asleep and, after only a few hours, woke up early, buzzing with excitement.
“Yeon-hoo! Passport and plane ticket packed?”
“Yep! Just double-checking!”
“Please do!”
“Passport… plane ticket, check! Wow, we really packed light. Think we can carry these on?”
“Backpacks aren’t too big, should be fine.”
After a final luggage check, we straightened each other’s clothes and slipped on our shoes.
“Feels a bit dry today… Lip balm?”
“Yeah, apply it for me.”
“Mmm~”
Hee-na obliged, applying lip balm to her lips before pressing them to mine, rubbing them together. My lips were thoroughly coated before she finished with a quick kiss.
-Chu!
“All done?”
“Think you used too much. Ready to go?”
“One sec~ Picture time!”
Hee-na wore a black skirt with a beige, lightly checkered long-sleeved shirt. I had on black slacks, a white t-shirt, and the same shirt as Hee-na – a matching couple look.
The shirts’ bright colors made for great photos. We posed with peace signs, our outfits radiating a spring vibe. Braving the chilly May morning, we held hands and set off.
“Departure!”
“Let’s go!”
We shouted, energized, and headed to the subway. It struck me that this was our first overnight trip, just the two of us, since high school.
Back then, we were younger, more innocent. I held myself back, leaving many things undone. Now, none of that mattered. A whole two-night trip awaited.
Overseas!
My heart pounded with anticipation, and I quickened my pace.
—
After an hour on the airport railroad, we arrived. Even in the off-season, the airport was bustling. Luckily, we skipped the ticket line, using the self-service machines.
We’d arrived early and gotten our tickets so quickly that we had even more time to kill.
“So much time… What should we do?”
“Eat something?”
“A little hungry… but wouldn’t it be a waste to eat here?”
“Triangle kimbap [rice ball wrapped in seaweed] each? Don’t want to travel on an empty stomach.”
“Sounds good. Wait here, I’ll grab them.”
I returned with the kimbap, and we shared bites. But then…
-Munch munch, peck!
Hee-na kept kissing me between bites, making it hard to focus on eating. She’s always been affectionate, but it felt amplified lately.
She’d sit close, chew, then kiss. Repeating the process.
“Aren’t you kissing me a lot?”
“Uung~ But I want to~”
“Let’s finish eating first. Or… picture time?”
“Let’s!”
We took a photo with our cheeks touching, each holding half-eaten kimbap to our mouths.
I posted the (non-risqué) photos in our group chat. Dozens of curses flooded in, but I was leaving Korea soon, so what could they do?
After the picture, Hee-na bit my finger holding the kimbap.
-Lick
“Ew, tickles!”
“Chup… Chulup…”
She licked and sucked, cleaning my finger. Then, she looked at me expectantly.
I knew what she wanted. I cupped her cheek and kissed her softly.
-Chu!
We kept it brief due to the passersby, opting for quick, noisy kisses.
-Chu, chu!
Looking into her eyes.
“Whose girlfriend is so pretty?”
“Yeon-hoo’s girlfriend~”
“That’s right. Open up!”
“Ung!”
-Chu!
Hee-na puckered her lips like a duck, and I kissed her again, savoring our time together.
Even after dozens of kisses, we still had time to spare.
Lips sore, we got up to explore the duty-free shops.
“Let’s check out the duty-free shop. Plenty of time.”
“Okay. Nice to walk around with a light bag~”
The duty-free shop resembled a department store. Some touristy items, but nothing we needed.
When Jung-hoo hyung [older brother/male friend] used to smoke, he’d stock up on cigarettes. Yoon-jung noona [older sister/female friend] hated it, asking if he was trying to kill himself.
But we didn’t smoke or drink much, and luxury shopping wasn’t our thing.
Food was our main interest.
“Wonder what that tastes like?”
“Banana bread? Seen it online. Cream inside makes it taste like banana.”
“Really? Curious… Buy a box for when we return?”
“Sure. Gift for your family. I should get one for Jung-hoo hyung too.”
“Just Jung-hoo oppa [older brother/male friend]? Why?”
“Ah, no… Just said hyung’s name. If we buy it, everyone will share.”
“Right~”
I was grateful for the loan, hence singling out hyung. I quickly corrected myself, thankfully avoiding suspicion. If she knew I’d borrowed money and recklessly gathered funds, even the word ‘marriage’ wouldn’t quell her anger.
Of course, Hee-na contributed too, exchanging what she could, which we’d use for local food expenses.
Startled by my slip-up, we continued browsing. Then, at a clothing store…
“Hmm… Still think you should buy pants… or change into the ones you brought…”
“Why? Doesn’t this skirt suit me?”
“It’s pretty, but guys keep staring.”
Not an overreaction. Hee-na’s beauty made heads turn, and her legs and fair skin naturally drew attention.
I’d always noticed, but never said anything. After her recent anxiety, I decided to be honest.
Showing jealousy was a way of expressing interest and love, preventing her anxiety from resurfacing.
“Pfft… Jealous? You get to touch me all the time.”
“Of course. I’m holding back right now, but they’re subtly checking you out.”
“We can touch each other on the plane later~ Let’s see other places.”
“Haa… Time’s dragging.”
After more browsing and coffee, we spent hours being lovey-dovey in a corner of the airport. Finally, we boarded the plane.
A bit cramped on the low-cost airline, but it didn’t matter for the short flight.
Sitting by the window, we fastened our seatbelts, held hands, and smiled.
“Eat first while waiting for the bus?”
“Let’s see what’s around first. If it’s not great, we can eat after we arrive.”
“Okay! Then… can I touch you now?”
She subtly lifted her skirt, revealing her thigh.
I accepted her offer, gently caressing her smooth skin.
It didn’t seem like the flight would be boring.
—
The short, exciting flight ended, and we stepped outside.
We were in Japan.
Before we could soak in the foreign air, we realized the bus to the hot spring village was arriving.
The flight was shorter than expected, allowing us to catch the earlier bus.
If we hurried!
“Hee-na! Bags packed?!”
“Yes! Double-checked! Let’s go!”
We rushed to the ticket machine near the exit. Carrying our luggage saved time.
The kanji [Japanese characters] and Japanese on the screen momentarily froze my brain, but I quickly purchased tickets thanks to having saved our destination’s name.
Emerging from the surprisingly small airport entrance, we saw buses parked everywhere.
“Which one?”
“Let me check… Ah! That one!”
The bus ticket looked completely different from Korean ones. I compared it carefully and found our bus.
The destination was also written on the ground, and surprisingly, in Korean on the bus’s front window. Just in case, I showed the ticket to the driver.
“Excuse me. Is this the right bus?”
“Yes, it is.”
My clumsy Japanese elicited a smiling “Hai!” [Yes!] from the driver. I didn’t understand the rest.
I’d asked in Japanese just to try. Hee-na knew some Japanese from school, but wasn’t conversational, so her skills were similar to mine. Besides, speaking a foreign language in a foreign country felt fun.
Hearing the confirmation, we boarded and sat down. The bus was quiet, with only a few other passengers.
“Hoo… Good timing.”
“I know. Was it hard carrying my bag too?”
“Not at all. You okay? You ran suddenly.”
“Yes! I’m a good runner, remember?”
“Lee Hee-na, 50m in 11.5 seconds?”
“Teasing me!”
We joked and bickered, expressing our excitement. Soon, the bus departed, revealing surprisingly open mountain scenery.
“Near the airport, but doesn’t feel rural?”
“I know. Small airport too… Maybe small provincial airports in Korea feel similar. Or maybe this entrance is unusually small.”
“Ah~ Could be.”
“Amazing the signs are in Japanese.”
“Take away the signs, and it feels Korean, right? Hee-na, can you read that?”
“Which one?”
I usually avoid talking in cars due to motion sickness. But today, the excitement outweighed the nausea, so I felt fine.
The bus was comfortable. Wide seats, free Wi-Fi, cool air, and even a toilet.
After an hour and a half, we arrived comfortably.
A quiet rural village, no tall buildings, few people due to the off-season.
Where we will enjoy making babies… no, ryokan [traditional Japanese Inn] and hot springs.
In a Japanese hot spring village.
