Ep. 139
Another two months passed, and after the New Year, February finally arrived.
And now.
Slightly past my birthday, and still before Heena’s birthday.
We were about to celebrate Han Sarang’s first birthday.
Sarang, who was 12 months old, could say “Mom” and “Dad” more clearly. Though a little unsteady, she could walk on her own and use her hands to pick up and eat things.
Because of that, she kept putting things in her mouth these days, making Heena and me nervous.
When she tried to eat baby food with a spoon by herself, only about a tenth of it made it into her mouth, and the rest was spilled everywhere, turning the surroundings into a disaster zone.
Moreover, as if to prove she was Heena’s daughter, she became even more attached to me.
Not to Heena.
Usually, babies are attached to their mothers, but maybe because she always sees her mother clinging to me, Sarang started looking for me every day.
Fortunately, it wasn’t to the point of separation anxiety, where she would cry if I wasn’t there.
Heesung hyung [older brother or male friend] showed me a video he took, and when I disappeared from Sarang’s sight, she became noticeably gloomy. But soon she started looking for Heena, saying, “Eomaaaa~.”
Still, when I reappeared, she was just busy clinging to me.
“Daddyyy! Daddy!”
Tomorrow was her first birthday party. So, I was sitting in the living room, checking the order of events on my laptop, when Sarang grabbed my clothes and started calling me.
I wanted to play with her, but since tomorrow was the event, I wanted to look at this first.
“Sarang, Daddy is busy, can you be with Mommy?”
“Abub!!”
I tried to pass her to Heena, but before I could finish, Sarang leaned over my legs and lay down. Then she buried her face in them and started wriggling.
Aigo [expression of endearment or frustration], Sarang…
“Babuaeueup…”
“She just throws herself first. Just like Heena’s daughter.”
“Hey, I’m not that bad, okay?”
Heena, who was sitting on the sofa behind me, immediately retorted. But honestly, I think Heena is even more extreme, not less.
“Anyway, take Sarang away. I need to check the order of events.”
“Okay~ Han Sarang! Shall we go eat crackers with Mommy?”
“Aba!”
“Daddy is busy~ Let’s play with Mommy~”
“Daddyyyy! Paaaaaaa!!”
“I don’t think it’s going to work, honey.”
“Aren’t you giving up too quickly?”
“How can I force her away when she’s holding on so tightly~”
As she said that, Heena hugged me from behind. Eventually, I was sandwiched between the mother and daughter, so I had no choice but to give up watching the laptop for now.
If I ignored them and kept going, I was worried that Sarang might bump into something.
“Ugh… I’ll watch it later. What about the others?”
“Mom and Dad said they were going to check the hotel one more time, and I don’t know about oppa [older brother].”
“Hmm, we don’t have anything else to prepare, right?”
“I don’t think so? We just need to dress Sarang and ourselves in pretty hanboks [traditional Korean clothing]~ Everyone’s coming to see that anyway.”
“I guess so.”
Since we weren’t making the first birthday party too big, that made sense. At most, both sets of grandparents and a few relatives. And a few of our friends.
However, even though it was an event to celebrate Sarang’s first birthday, I was somehow more nervous.
“Eucha!” [sound of effort]
I lifted Sarang, who was still wriggling on my legs.
She’s quite heavy now, our daughter.
“You can do well tomorrow, can’t you, our Sarang?”
“Abuap! Daddy!”
“You didn’t even call me that a month or two ago, but now you say it all the time…”
“I’m worried about what will happen when we go back to school. Sarang will be looking for you all day.”
“Sigh… Should we take her with us?”
“Should we? If we get permission from the professors in advance, and you and I take turns taking care of her…”
“Sorry. I was joking, please don’t seriously consider it?”
I feel bad when I think about Sarang being gloomy when Heena and I aren’t there, but she needs to get used to being apart for short periods of time.
I enjoyed the warmth I felt on both my chest and back, and slowly calmed down. The warmth of a person’s body had the power to make me feel very comfortable.
In that state, I talked to Heena about the future.
“Heena.”
“Yeah?”
“Shall we go to the beach this summer? Even if we don’t swim, let’s let Sarang feel the sea breeze.”
“Of course we should go~ Were you not planning to go?”
“Well… I don’t think I’ll be as busy this year as I was last year.”
Last year, it was my first year of college, so there were many difficulties in many ways, and the lectures and assignments were more than I imagined, so I didn’t have any free time.
And Sarang was too young.
“Before summer, how about the zoo in the spring? Like on Children’s Day. Don’t you want to see the red panda again?”
“We have to go no matter what. Can I spend an hour with the red panda this time?”
“Sure~ If you like the red panda more than me and Sarang, go ahead.”
“Why does the story always end up like that…”
Heena pinched my waist lightly. In her heart, the competition with the red panda hasn’t ended even after 4 years.
“In the fall… shall we set a date and go shopping mall dating, the three of us? You know, the place we always go to.”
“That’s good too. I think there’s a kids cafe there too.”
“What if Sarang is so pretty that all the other babies fall for her?”
“If you want to take Sarang, you have to pass my screening first. There are about a thousand screening items, though.”
Of course, I had no intention of giving Sarang to those snot-nosed kids. How dare they, our Sarang, who is the prettiest in the world!
“I wonder if Sarang will like street food? I hope she has your taste…”
“Why?”
“Honestly, I enjoy eating it, but I know it’s not good for my health.”
“Still, isn’t it nice to share one with your daughter?”
“That’s nice. But even if she doesn’t like it as much as I do, she can still do that much, right?”
“Well, I’ve always been like that~”
Even Heena, who doesn’t like street food, always shared a bite or two. Honestly, I don’t know if it’s because she can enjoy it a little, or if I forced her to take a bite.
“Then what shall we do in the winter? We’ll probably gather again for Christmas like last year…”
“Hmm… Shall we trick Heesung hyung into going on a hot spring trip?”
“That’s good, but why oppa [older brother]?”
“Even if we take care of our share, wouldn’t Heesung hyung pay for Sarang’s share?”
“Heheheh… That’s too much!”
“Just wait until I get a job. I’ll buy Heesung hyung everything he asks for.”
“Me too! Come to think of it, it seems like oppa has started dating these days.”
“Ah~ With the cafe manager? Sigh… It was a long, long unrequited love…”
“Really~”
I’m always grateful to all my family, but I have even more gratitude for Heesung hyung. He never refused our requests, and he did so much for us on his own.
If Heesung hyung gets married a little later, one of my goals is to pay for his honeymoon. If that doesn’t work, I’ll at least get him a home appliance later.
“Junghoo oppa and unni [older sister] said they’re getting married next year, right?”
“Yeah. It seems like they’ve settled down at work. They’re going to work hard this year to save up for the wedding and move out.”
“Hehe, do you know that unni always talks about that when I meet her these days? She must be very happy.”
“There are many couples who break up even after dating for a long time, so I’m glad that hyung and noona [older sister] are doing well. Honestly, I wish noona was hyung’s wife.”
Junghoo hyung, who seemed taciturn but took care of me in a subtle way, and Yoonjung noona, who treated me more kindly than my own sister and gave me advice on my relationship with Heena in many ways. Well, there were times when she stirred things up, but that’s all a memory now.
“What about Sunhoo oppa? Doesn’t he have anyone he’s seeing?”
“He needs to move out of the house first… I don’t know. But seeing him come to see Sarang almost every day these days, I’m sure he doesn’t have anyone right now.”
“I guess… And I’m so glad he’s bringing other snacks besides rice puffs now…”
“Really. Heesung hyung ate more than half of those rice puffs anyway. He’d open a bag, give one to Sarang, and eat the rest himself. What would we have done without hyung?”
“I think he’s gotten used to it, though? I saw him taking them out and eating them while watching TV the other day.”
Sunhoo hyung is also a nephew fool like Heesung hyung, so he comes out a bit now, but he’s still a homebody.
Still, he earns enough for his own living expenses, so his parents don’t say much. I don’t know how he earns money while using the computer, but it seems like he’s taking care of his own livelihood, so it’s okay.
“Daddyyyy!!! Aueue!!”
“Aigo, were you upset because we were only talking to Mommy? I’m sorry.”
“No matter what you do, Daddy likes playing with Mommy more~”
“Let’s really stop competing with Sarang…”
“I’m just kidding~ Sarang, shall we play with blocks with Mommy?”
“Ueawue…”
Despite Heena’s suggestion, she grabbed my arms with both hands as if she wasn’t interested and continued to make unknown gestures. It seemed like she just wanted me to look at her, and she didn’t seem to want to get out of my arms.
Sarang’s love for her dad is nothing new now. If she goes to middle school later, puberty will start, and just imagining that makes my heart ache.
Sarang getting angry at me, I might want to die if I heard that.
“What if she keeps clinging to you tomorrow?”
“We’ll probably have to keep taking her with us. What is Sarang going to grab? What did we decide to put out?”
“Yeah~ Just ordinary things like a pencil, a coin, a ball, a model of an air purifier, and… your picture.”
“…My picture?”
“Yeah.”
“No, why put my picture there?”
“The parents are going to put it there? They’re bringing a small frame from our house.”
“What’s with the first birthday grab [a Korean tradition where a baby chooses an item that is believed to predict their future]…”
But somehow, I have a feeling that Sarang is going to grab my picture.
Well, whatever. If she grabs my picture, I’ll just accept it as my daughter’s cute affection, saying she wants to marry Daddy. As a dad, I welcome it!
“I’m going to try to stop her if she tries to grab your picture.”
“……”
Mom doesn’t seem to welcome it very much.
Anyway, Sarang is already one year old tomorrow.
I’m worried about whether I’ll be able to sleep well tonight. Maybe because my birthday and Heena’s birthday are also near, it feels like a joint birthday party for the three of us, so I feel more excited.
So, we talked with excited hearts until our family came home.
About what will happen tomorrow.
While looking forward to our Sarang’s first birthday party.
