Ep. 183
It’s June, and summer is just around the corner. I’ve been busy planning a trip these days.
Heena and I both had some free time, and we managed to find dates when the rest of the family could also make time.
I had considered waiting a bit longer to coincide with Sarang’s summer vacation, but adults don’t get vacations, and some people have a hard time getting summer leave.
So, we all agreed to go as soon as we could find the time. Plus, as summer gets closer, the pensions [small, family-run resorts or guesthouses, common in Korea] get busier, which could be a nuisance to Yu-joon.
Of course, we weren’t planning on staying for free; we were going to pay for our accommodations properly. But if we go, Joon will probably try to take extra care of us, which could be a hassle during his busy season.
─So, when is it? The first Friday of June?
“Yeah. That’s the day.”
─Got it~ I wasn’t taking reservations for the second week just in case~
“Really? I feel a bit bad then.”
─It’ll fill up soon anyway. Wow~ I finally get to see your wife and Sarang in person?
“Yeah. Take a good look. And don’t cry.”
It’s not like I hadn’t seen Joon since my discharge. But I’ve been busy with work and taking care of Sarang, so I haven’t had a chance to go down to Busan. Instead, I met Joon twice when he came up to Seoul for work.
I always wanted to introduce him to Heena and Sarang when he came, but the timing was never right, so they still haven’t met.
Heena is often busy and couldn’t make time, and Sarang happened to be at her relatives’ house whenever he came.
─Haa… If I didn’t have to manage the pension, I’d have a fox-like wife and a rabbit-like child… [In Korean culture, a “fox-like wife” is clever and attractive, while a “rabbit-like child” is innocent and cute.]
“Ehehehehehahahahahahahahaha!!!!!! Oh, right. That’s too bad. If it weren’t for the pen- *cough*… pension, you would have.”
─I wanna kill you so bad.
He was still funny after all these years. There were a few army buddies I still kept in touch with, but no one as often or as closely as Joon.
Plus, hearing his voice after so long made our conversation even more lively than texting.
We chatted for almost an hour, until it was time for Joon to go to work, and we wrapped up the conversation.
“I’ll contact you again then.”
─Okay~ Text me~
-Click
The call ended, and I was checking the texts that had come in during the call when.
-Stare─
“……”
I felt an intense gaze from the side. I turned my head slightly and saw Sarang staring intently at me from the sofa.
What’s up.
“Sarang. What is it?”
“Daddy, are you done with your call?”
“Yeah. I’m done.”
“Can I sit on your lap now?”
“Of course. Daddy’s lap is Sarang’s special seat. Come here.”
“Yay!”
Before I could finish speaking, she climbed onto my lap. And with her back against me, Sarang started texting her friends on her smartphone.
“Are you texting your friends?”
“Yeah! Joo-eun wants to play at our house.”
“Really? When?”
“When school’s out!”
Well, Joo-eun is fine. Heena seems to like her, judging by how much she cares for her.
I stroked Sarang’s hair and checked my texts again, replying to them. I sent a brief update in the friends’ group chat and told the family group chat that the pension dates were confirmed.
I was busy working my thumbs when Sarang started hitting my chest with her head.
“Daddy~ Hug me!”
“Instead of stroking, do you want a hug?”
“Yeah!”
At my daughter’s request, I lowered my hands and wrapped them around her belly, adjusting my strength so it wouldn’t hurt.
“Tighter!”
But Sarang didn’t seem to like that consideration. She bumped her head against me again, making an additional request.
So, I pulled her in as tightly as I would hug Heena, and she finally made a satisfied sound.
“Doesn’t it hurt?”
“I like this!”
“Tell me if it hurts. Okay?”
“Okay!”
She said she liked it, but I was still careful with the strength of my arms, worried that our delicate Sarang might get hurt. I rested my chin on Sarang’s head and held her hand as I used my phone.
As we were both happily texting, it suddenly occurred to me that it might be a good time to start talking to Sarang about the trip again.
We’re planning to go in two weeks, and the anticipation leading up to the trip is part of the fun.
“Sarang. Do you remember?”
“What?”
“The fishing trip Daddy said we’d all go on together.”
“I remember! Sarang is going fishing with you! When are we going?!”
“We’re going the Friday after next. So, how many days is that?”
“Um! Uh… Ah! Thirteen!”
“Thirteen?”
“No! Thirteen days away!”
“Our Sarang is so smart~”
“Hehe!”
Who did she take after to be so smart? Well, probably Heena.
Sarang couldn’t hide her excitement, swinging her legs up and down. She was so hyped up, it was as if we were leaving tomorrow.
Of course, she had a similar reaction when I told her before, but I still felt happy.
Sarang probably isn’t very interested in fishing, just like Heena. But I was so touched that she was happy just to be with me.
“Hey! I want to go fishing with Daddy!”
“You do? Should Daddy and you hold the fishing rod together and fish?”
“Yeah!”
I was planning to do it together anyway, since it would be dangerous to let Sarang handle a fishing rod on her own.
As I sat on the sofa, chatting with Sarang about the fishing trip, Heena, who had just finished showering after getting off work, came over to us.
“What’s this? What are you two talking about so happily?”
“Mom! I’m going fishing with Daddy!”
“Really? Sarang is going fishing with Daddy?”
“Yeah!”
“What about Mommy? Won’t you go with Mommy?”
“Ah! I have to go with Mommy too! Daddy! What should I do?”
“You can go with Daddy once, and then with Mommy once. One time each.”
“That’ll work!”
She couldn’t sit still any longer, so I let go of her. Sarang jumped up and down in the living room, happy.
“Ahem…”
And the sound echoed all the way to the master bedroom, as my father-in-law came out of the room and cleared his throat. It didn’t seem like he was doing it because it was noisy, but probably to get Sarang’s attention.
Sure enough, as soon as Sarang looked at him, he started talking as if it was his turn.
“Sarang. You have to go with Grandpa too, right?”
“Yes! I want to go fishing with Grandpa!”
“Hehe, is that so? Grandpa will have to give Sarang a big one.”
“Wow!”
“A big one, my foot… You went last time and came back empty-handed~”
“Ahem! Nonsense!”
My mother-in-law also came out and scolded my father-in-law. He must like fishing, but he’s not very good at it.
While the two of them were arguing about who was better at fishing with Sarang, Heena sat next to me and kissed me on the lips.
-Chu!
“How was it? Was that day okay with him?”
She asked about the trip schedule after a short kiss.
“Yeah. He said he kept the reservations open until the following week just in case.”
“Really? I feel bad if he goes that far…”
“The reservations fill up quickly anyway. Are you okay with it?”
“Yeah. The project is over, so nothing urgent should come up suddenly. What about you?”
“Same here. If nothing comes up, my brothers will all go on a trip together for the first time in a while.”
“Hehe, I’m looking forward to it~ It’s the first time we’re all going, including Ji-hoo.”
“Now that I think about it, I’ve never taken Ji-hoo on a trip before.”
I thought of my nephew’s face, who I see once a week, and who doesn’t show much expression, probably because he resembles Hyung Jung-hoo.
Ji-hoo is quite calm, so I don’t think the trip will be too difficult.
“I suddenly want to see Ji-hoo. That kid is cute. That sullen, expressionless face is charming.”
“Why, do you wish you had a son?”
“No… I just think my nephew is cute. Whether it’s a son or a daughter, I’d love any child of ours.”
“Really?”
Heena gave me a seductive smile at my words. It felt like she was trying to seduce me.
After a while, she opened her pretty lips and brought up the story I’d been waiting for.
“Then shall we have a second child? I’m ready.”
“Isn’t it too early yet?”
“Not at all! I’ve already looked into the childcare leave procedures. It can happen anytime, as long as you put in the effort?”
“Wow.”
That’s our Heena for you. She’s so thorough.
Anyway, a second child. It’s not like I hadn’t thought about it. We’ve both been saying since before that we wanted at least two children.
We’ve received so much help, joy, and happiness from our siblings throughout our lives, and we wanted Sarang to experience that too.
But even so, I hesitated because I remembered how much Heena struggled when she had Sarang.
Especially since I watched most of Heena’s pregnancy and childbirth process right by her side, it felt even more significant.
Heena continued to persuade me as I pondered.
“Since Mom and Dad probably won’t let us live independently for a while, wouldn’t now be a good time? Before we really move out.”
“That’s true too.”
That was a very valid point. If we were to live independently, the burden would be enormous, even if Heena took childcare leave and stayed home with the child.
Of course, my mom or my mother-in-law would come to help in that situation, but it wouldn’t be as good as living together and taking care of her right next to her.
Plus, we had to consider the financial aspect. Our income wouldn’t be insufficient right now. But it’s much more economical when we’re living together.
Most of all, Heena must have brought it up because she thought she was ready. We had Sarang so quickly and caused so much trouble for our families, so we hadn’t been able to talk about a second child easily.
Back then, Heena seemed to want a child as if she was being chased by something. I don’t know what it was.
But now, she must have brought it up because she thought it was the best time, considering various factors.
Then all that was left was my decision.
But was there really a decision to make?
“Then let’s have one.”
“Really?!”
Heena asked back, her face lighting up at my quick decision after a brief moment of thought. I was worried about Heena, but her will was firm, and I also wanted a second child, so there was no reason to refuse.
Plus, I agreed with Heena’s opinion that now was the right time.
“But we should talk about it, right? With my mother-in-law… We’ll need a lot of help again after we have the baby.”
“It’s okay! I’ve been subtly telling her that I want a second child several times recently!”
“That’s a relief…”
I wondered if I had released the bait too early, but I still felt a sense of relief in one corner of my heart. It was a bit embarrassing for me to bring it up.
Anyway… Hmm.
It feels like we decided a bit suddenly. A second child…
Well, if you’re going to have a child, the most important thing is that, right?
“Heena.”
“Yeah!”
“Hide all the condoms in the corner. We won’t need them for a while.”
“…Okay… Hehehe…”
Should I leave Sarang in another room and try my best on this trip?
