Ep. 184
Preparations for the trip were progressing steadily. With the most important issues of accommodation and timing resolved, all that remained was deciding what to do for fun.
However, since it wasn’t a long trip, we wouldn’t be able to do too many things. I was mainly thinking about fishing and food. And since we were going all the way to Busan, I wanted to take Sarang to the aquarium.
There were a few other tourist spots, but I wasn’t sure if we’d have time. Fishing was the main event, not just a stop along the way, so it would take up a lot of time.
And for me, another unexpected item had been added to the itinerary.
Trying to get Heena pregnant.
It sounds a bit crude when I put it like that, but it’s not wrong. Ever since Heena and I talked about having a second child, I’d been looking for an opportunity.
“Sarang, do you want to sleep with Grandma tonight?”
“I want to sleep with Daddy… Can’t I…?”
“…Of course, you can! Should Daddy give you a big hug?”
“Yeah! Hug me!”
Sarang wouldn’t allow it. Of course, it’s not new that Sarang likes to sleep with me, but she’s been especially clingy lately.
She even holds onto me tightly while sleeping, making it difficult to sneak out to a motel in the middle of the night.
Heena seemed frustrated with the situation, but she didn’t seem to want to force her daughter not to sleep with her dad.
But she clung to my side and whispered with a dejected look.
“Honey… I want to do it…”
A very explicit statement. I’d been subtly teasing her, but we hadn’t gone all the way, so she seemed to be in a state of frustration.
Especially since it had been years since we’d planned to do it raw [without contraception]. Thanks to that, Heena was not just heated up these days, but burning fiercely.
The problem was Sarang’s perfectly timed interference, as if she knew what we were planning and wouldn’t allow it.
I thought about sneaking out after work, but unlike before, the kids all use smartphones these days, so Sarang knew our schedule roughly.
If I was going to be late even when it wasn’t a late night at work, she would keep texting me, saying, ‘Dad, when are you coming!’ I didn’t want to lie to Sarang about being late.
Even a small lie, if it accumulates, can become a habit. Even when I enlisted in the army, I didn’t lie to Sarang.
“Heena, are you okay?”
“Yeah… I’m okay… Sarang is still energetic, right?”
“Yeah. She said she’s bringing Blackie [her stuffed animal] later, so let’s sleep together.”
“Okay…”
Suddenly, I saw a very tired look on Heena’s face, which was rare. Heena hates worrying her family, so even if she’s physically tired, she usually doesn’t show it.
But she didn’t seem to have the energy to worry about that now. Besides, whenever she came home, Heena’s eyes seemed to be directed towards my lower region.
“Let’s hang in there a little longer. I asked for an extra small room at the pension [a type of Korean lodging].”
“What if Sarang follows us there too…?”
“Sarang will get tired quickly since we’re going far away to play. Let’s all play together as a family, and when Sarang falls asleep, we’ll ask your mom or my mom and go to our room.”
“Okay… I’ll try my best.”
“Heena, fighting!”
“Then give me a kiss. Quickly.”
Actually, I felt like I spent more time comforting Heena than planning the trip. Since we couldn’t do the deed, she kept giving me surprise kisses more often than usual.
—
A few days later.
I stopped by my parents’ house on the way home from work. I needed to tell them how the trip plans were going, and I had something to say, so I was killing two birds with one stone.
“Yeonwoo, the car seat we bought before fits Jihoo perfectly.”
“Really? That’s good. Keep it safe. We might use it again later. Did you hear from Heena…?”
“About the second child? I heard. Good thinking. You guys are settled, and your in-laws like it. We’re fine with it too.”
Before the trip, we talked about our second child first. It was a much more important matter. And my dad was very welcoming.
“That’s good, but when are you going to have the wedding?”
“That’s… maybe after the second one grows up a bit?”
“Will that be okay?”
“It takes forever to prepare for that. And after the trip, I’ll gradually get busy again. Sarang is all grown up anyway, so wouldn’t it be okay to do it later?”
“If that’s what you guys want, then do it that way. But son.”
“Yeah?”
“Why didn’t you bring Sarang?”
“Ah… sorry…”
“A son who leaves home doesn’t even show his granddaughter… sigh…”
My mom didn’t say much about the second child either. Instead, she touched on our wedding, which had been postponed.
I had already discussed the wedding with Heena several times. And Heena had said that she would just take pictures and didn’t necessarily need to have a ceremony. Of course, I immediately opposed it.
Even though it was a bit late, it was a once-in-a-lifetime event, and I wanted to make sure we did it later. I wanted to give my lovely wife all the happiness she deserved.
After getting scolded by my mom for not bringing Sarang, I heard something a bit unexpected from my dad.
“By the way, which team are you on?”
“What team?”
“You’re supposed to fish as a team, didn’t you hear?”
“I’m hearing it for the first time.”
“We decided to bet dinner on it.”
“A bet?”
Well, a moderate bet that’s not too excessive is fun. But if I join, it’ll be too unbalanced.
“I’ll just be on Sarang’s team.”
“What?”
“If I go to one side, Sarang will go as a set, but it’ll be hard to do it properly with Sarang. I’ll just take Sarang and drop out. I have to take care of her anyway.”
“Hmm, okay. That’s better.”
But if I don’t join, Heena will drop out too, so maybe Yoonjung noona [older sister] will stick with my father-in-law’s team. My sister-in-law is best friends with my mother-in-law.
The team composition is interesting. It’ll be fun to watch.
After that, we talked about the departure time, which car to take, and so on, before heading to my brother’s room.
I came to my parents’ house to discuss these things, but I also wanted to see Jihoo.
-Knock, knock
“Our brother-in-law is here!”
“I’m here.”
I had contacted them in advance, and they probably heard the conversation in the living room. As soon as I knocked, my sister-in-law’s bright voice greeted me, knowing it was me.
When I opened the door, I saw my sister-in-law lying on her side on the bed, patting Jihoo.
Jihoo was leaning against his sister, staring blankly at me.
“Jihoo~ Uncle is here!”
“……”
I waved my hand and called him, but there was no response. Such a chic guy.
Of course, he wasn’t ignoring me completely; he kept looking at me. He just didn’t say anything. Usually, he would make some kind of babbling sound when I greeted him like this, but today there was nothing.
As I waited for Jihoo’s reaction while waving my hand, my sister-in-law smiled and said,
“Jihoo just ate, so he’s probably sleepy~?”
“Ah, he’s sleepy? I thought he was just annoyed because he’s the same as usual.”
“What are you talking about! Our Jihoo is so tired! His eyes are 80% closed!”
“Looks the same to me…”
“No, it’s not!”
My sister-in-law shouted in defense, but no matter how much I looked, it was the same face as usual. Does she know something because she’s his mom?
“Where’s hyung [older brother]?”
“Out with Sunhoo. He said he’s going to look at fishing rods?”
“Why is he looking at those?”
“Because he’s going fishing?”
“Why… when we’re renting everything?”
“I don’t know. They say their skills won’t come out without their own fishing rods.”
“What kind of bullsh… Oops. Jihoo is here.”
I can control myself almost 100% perfectly in front of Heena and Sarang, but in other places, I sometimes blurt out swear words without realizing it. Especially when I hear such absurd stories.
What kind of people who have never even seen a fishing rod in their lives are looking for their own fishing rods?
As I almost swore, my sister-in-law laughed loudly and agreed with my reaction.
“I know, right! Why waste money buying fishing rods… sigh. They’re so excited about betting dinner this time.”
“That? It might be surprisingly close. My father-in-law doesn’t seem to be that good either.”
“It’s okay. I’ll carry that team.”
“Oh~ Have you ever fished before, noona?”
“Nope?”
“Then what are you going to carry?”
“That’s what a pro is like.”
Is she reading martial arts novels these days?
Seeing my sister-in-law full of unfounded confidence, I was really looking forward to a close match.
Anyway, I sat down on the bed and gently stroked Jihoo, who had a pacifier in his mouth. Then I felt like his eyes narrowed a little more.
“Oh! Jihoo likes it! As expected of our brother-in-law~ Sarang likes him a lot too!”
“Hah… I can’t help this popularity.”
I said that, but I couldn’t tell at all. Is this liking? It’s not easy to figure out my nephew’s feelings.
I was playing with Jihoo by gently pinching his cheek for a while when my sister-in-law got up from the bed and said,
“You guys are having a second child, right?”
“Yeah.”
“Do you want a son or a daughter for your second child?”
“I don’t know. Both? I like daughters and sons because they’re my and Heena’s children.”
“Pfft… Hahnyunwoo is so sweet~ [Hahnyunwoo is a play on the protagonist’s name, Yeonwoo, combined with the word ‘honey’.]”
“Call me Hansweet from now on.”
“Hehe.”
My sister-in-law smiles brightly at my words. She looks at me intently with a very happy face.
“You two look so good together~”
“Us? We’re always the same, what do you mean.”
“No~ You’ve changed~ Don’t you remember when you asked me for advice a long time ago?”
“Advice? Me?”
“When you first started dating. You said Heena was being too good to you.”
“Ah… Ah~ Ah! That’s right! I did that!”
I remembered, but it was so long ago that my memory was hazy. I did ask my sister-in-law for advice in the early days of our relationship.
What did I say then?
“I said then? The reason why Heena’s feelings feel overwhelming is that Heena likes you more than you like Heena.”
“That’s right, that’s right. I think that’s what you said. Wow~ You remember that?”
“Of course~ It was the first time you ever asked me for advice~”
I was momentarily lost in memories of those innocent days. That was already 10 years ago.
My sister-in-law chuckled a little more, then continued with a warm smile.
“But now, it seems similar.”
“What does?”
“You two. The way you think about each other and like each other.”
“Really?”
“Yeah.”
Is that so.
Certainly, at some point, I stopped thinking that Heena’s feelings were overwhelming. Now, rather than her feelings being overwhelming, sometimes her libido is a bit… ahem.
Those old memories come to mind, overlapping with the happiness of this everyday life. I smiled at my sister-in-law, who was sometimes like a child, and at other times helped us as reliably as my older brothers, and at Yoonjung noona. And at the same time, I suddenly had a thought.
Maybe a son would be good after all. If it’s Sarang, she’ll definitely be a good older sister like Yoonjung noona.
Well, even if it’s a girl, she’ll be a good older sister, so is it the same anyway?
Anyway, I finished that heartwarming conversation and got up, thinking about going home soon. I suddenly missed Heena so much after talking about her.
“Then I’ll go. Bye, Jihoo~ See you next time, noona~”
“Okay~ Ah! Yeonwoo!”
I said goodbye to Jihoo and my sister-in-law for the last time, and when I put my hand on the doorknob to leave, my sister-in-law called me.
When I turned my head to look at my sister-in-law, the kind face from before was gone, and there was a sly smile like a beast.
“There’s red ginseng [Korean herbal medicine] in the fridge? Take some with you~”
“Why suddenly red ginseng?”
“Hehehe, to give you strength~ Heena is really determined~ Leave Sarang to me that day!”
“Ah……”
Ah…
As expected of our Heena.
She’s already started laying the groundwork…?
