Girlfriend is Too Nice – Ep. 4
Ep. 4
Early morning.
I couldn’t contain my excitement and practically skipped to school. My monotonous daily life had suddenly gained an interesting story, like a ray of sunshine. It was a story I hadn’t even shared in a text last night because I wanted to tell it in person.
“Hey, hey, hey!! Yesterday was insane!!!”
“Ugh, what is it?”
I wasn’t thrilled with his grumpy, half-asleep face, but I couldn’t help but smile when I thought about what happened yesterday.
Barely suppressing my laughter, I nudged his arm and continued.
“You know the way home from that convenience store after we split up yesterday? That secluded spot?”
“Yeah.”
“Yesterday, I was spacing out on my way home after playing basketball before evening study hall, and that… uh, what was it? The girl’s high school with the plaid skirt.”
“Seonghwa?”
“Ah, is that it? Anyway, a girl in that uniform confessed to me.”
“? What the hell are you talking about?”
Look at this guy, no interest at all until suddenly he’s all ears.
“Have you seen my class? You know I’m not exactly swimming in confessions.”
“Don’t bullshit me. Is this for real?”
“Heh heh… Well, getting a confession is real.”
“Oh, I see.”
“Huh?”
Thump!
The guy who had been slumped over like a jellyfish on the beach suddenly jolted upright. Then, he slammed his hand on the desk and stood on it. He struck an Elvis Presley-like pose, raising one arm powerfully and pointing at the ceiling.
What the hell is this crazy bastard doing? What’s going on all of a sudden?
“Attention!!!!!!!!!!!! Han Yeon-hoo, that son of a bitch, got a confession from a Seonghwa Girls’ High School student yesterday!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
“What the hell are you doing, you crazy bastard?!”
The sluggish morning.
In this space where all I could see were corpses who had clearly been up late playing games, jerking off, or watching YouTube.
This shouting.
This aggro.
Gave them strength.
Like a resurrection spell.
“Is that goddamn morning news true!!”
“It’s true!!”
“Are you sure?!”
“I’ve even verified it!!”
“Get him, you fuckers!!”
“Why are you guys making a fuss when you were just sleeping!!!”
Thump thump thump thump!!!
It was hard to believe that these pig-like bastards, most of whom had been lying face down on their desks just 10 seconds ago, suddenly swarmed me.
I wasn’t exactly small compared to the other guys, but with that many of them, I couldn’t even put up a fight and was quickly overwhelmed.
Thud!
One of them grabbed my collar and slammed me against the wall next to the window.
Talk about overreacting…
“Hey.”
“…Yes..”
“You better fucking tell the truth from now on.”
“..I’m Han Yeon-hoo.. a man who has never told a lie in his life..”
“This bastard starts lying as soon as he opens his mouth?”
“Hey, you bastards!! At least listen to the end!!”
I mean, it was a story that started with ‘I got a confession,’ not a boast, but that crazy bastard Jung Yoon-sung suddenly went wild!!
“Alright, alright, calm down. Let’s start from the beginning. Who called for this trial?”
“I did.”
“Jung Yoon-sung? Okay. You do it.”
“Okay. Hey, I’ll ask the questions. You answer. I already heard it, so don’t fucking lie.”
“What is this..”
“Did you get a confession from a Seonghwa Girls’ High School student on your way home yesterday?”
“Isn’t the plaid pattern right for that school? I’m not sure.”
“You’re making it difficult.”
Crack!
“Kaaaaaack!”
Hey, don’t twist my arm, you crazy bastard!!
“Did you get a confession from a Seonghwa Girls’ High School student?”
“Y-yes!!”
“He says yes.”
“I think I’m going to feel like shit all day if I hear more. Should we just kill him now?”
“Let’s hear a little more. There might be room for extenuating circumstances.”
“Is such a twist even possible here?”
One guy is grabbing my collar.
Two guys are holding each of my arms.
And that bastard Jung Yoon-sung is flapping his gums next to me.
The rest of these morons were watching this ridiculous situation intently with murderous eyes. But why are those guys with girlfriends joining in?
Anyway, I felt like these crazy bastards were really going to break my limbs, so I desperately blurted out an excuse.
“No, you fuckers! I did get a confession!! But something was really weird about it!!”
“What’s weird about it? Was someone watching nearby and laughing?”
“Isn’t it that the girls made a bet and the loser had to do it as a punishment?”
“Ah, that’s understandable. Sorry, Yeon-hoo.”
“Ah, no.. it’s not that.”
“Then?”
“She was so pretty.”
“Death penalty.”
Thwack!!
Crack!
Argh!! These crazy bastards are really twisting, hitting, and going wild!!
“No.. Cough!! It was like Shincheonji!!!!” [Shincheonji is a controversial new religious movement in South Korea.]
Pause.
My desperate cry ended the beating that felt like I had been hit dozens of times in that short period.
It hurts like hell, seriously!!
“Shincheonji? Are you sure?”
“Isn’t this bastard just saying anything he can to survive?”
“I think that’s what it was!!”
“What do you mean, ‘I think that’s what it was,’ you bastard. It either is or it isn’t.”
“Judge!! Please don’t hit me until I finish speaking!!”
“Okay. Hey, ease up a bit. Let’s hear what he has to say.”
That bastard Jung Yoon-sung.
“Yesterday, I got a confession on my way home. From a girl in a uniform, I don’t know if it was Seonghwa Girls’ High School or not.”
“Yeah.”
“But she was so pretty. Really unbelievably so.”
“Crack, yeah. So?”
“What do you mean, ‘so,’ you bastards!!!”
Are these guys brainless!
“You dumb fucks!! There’s no way such a pretty high school girl would confess to me, you sons of bitches!! It must be Shincheonji!!!”
Whether they were moved by my cry filled with resentment and soul. All the force restraining my body was instantly released.
At the same time, gazes filled with sympathy and pity turned towards me.
“Ah….”
“ah…”
“That’s.. right…”
“Does Shincheonji even try to pick up high schoolers these days?”
“Oh my, that’s so scary…”
“Yeon-hoo, are you okay?”
So sweet. You goddamn bastards.
I’m not okay, you bastards.
I wanted to unleash a torrent of curses on the bastards who had been beating me without listening to a word I said.
Click.
“Are you all here? Why is it so chaotic? What happened?”
“Nothing happened, teacher.”
“Okay. No one’s late, right? Pay attention in class today too.”
The teacher opened the front door of the classroom and walked in at the worst possible moment.
Nothing happened my ass. School violence itself just happened in this classroom.
Sigh. It hurts like hell, seriously.
These bastards have already lost all interest because I said it wasn’t a real confession.
Trashy bastards.
—
Another boring class passed, and as always, basketball before evening study hall. During study hall, I spent my time surfing the web on my phone. In the meantime, the trash who had thrown me into the middle of the beating earlier tapped my arm and spoke to me.
“Hey, hey.”
“What.”
“That thing you said this morning. Was it real?”
“You shameless bastard, bringing up that topic after beating me like that.”
Seriously, what a trashy guy?
“No, I mean, did it really seem like Shincheonji?”
“I don’t know for sure, but circumstantially, I guess it could be.”
“Are you sure she didn’t really confess?”
“I want to believe that as much as possible, but she was too pretty to be human.”
“Was she that pretty?”
“That pretty.”
“Oh…”
“I told her to get lost yesterday while implying she was Shincheonji, so I probably won’t see her again.”
“What a manly man.”
That was the end of the conversation. Maybe this guy wasn’t really that curious and just brought up the topic to kill time at the end of study hall. I wasn’t thinking about it anymore either.
‘Will you go out with me?’
“……”
I’m not thinking about it, but the image of that high school girl smiling with her eyes lingered in my mind.
I was able to shake it off because I thought it was ridiculous, but if it had been someone even slightly weaker, they would have fallen for it in 0.1 seconds. I was sure enough to bet my left hand and both balls on it.
Because she was really too pretty.
What would it be like to date someone like that? I would seriously worship her for the rest of my life, never letting her lift a finger. Why is she doing something like Shincheonji with that face?
That’s some crazy cult evangelism, seriously.
—
“…..”
Good heavens.
Like yesterday, I wasn’t thinking about anything. It was just another ordinary walk home. I thought the high school girl’s confession would definitely be one of the funny episodes when I looked back on my life.
I never imagined it would continue today.
“Hi?”
The way she greeted me with a shy smile was violent enough to make me think, ‘Screw Shincheonji, should I just fall for it?’
Long, black, straight hair with a slightly parted fringe.
Delicate features.
A seemingly frail figure.
Today, after parting with Yoon-sung near the convenience store, I was trudging home alone.
In a similar location to yesterday.
She suddenly appeared.
Unlike yesterday, when I turned around and ran away immediately, I could see her clearly.
The moment I saw her, she was so pretty that it took my breath away.
“Um…”
I didn’t expect to see her today either, so I was flustered, and seeing her full figure, she was even prettier than I had imagined, so I was momentarily speechless. Thanks to that, she quickly opened her mouth before I could finish my sentence.
“I’m not Shincheonji.”
“…….”
Hmm. Hearing that word cleared my head.
I saw on the internet that Shincheonji doesn’t usually introduce themselves as Shincheonji when they proselytize. Still, I was a little unsure, so I didn’t run away this time, but I kept a little distance and just stared at her.
In the meantime, my reason was doing its job, and it didn’t seem like there was anyone else around. I wasn’t a great fighter, but I didn’t think I would be subdued by the girl in front of me or kidnapped anywhere.
Even at this moment, I didn’t think yesterday’s confession was sincere. Still, I thought it would be okay to hear her out since I had come this far.
Yeah. It could have been a punishment game. Maybe she came to apologize today because she felt sorry for making me so flustered yesterday that I ran away.
While I was having such random thoughts, she continued.
“I waited. Yesterday too, and today.”
“Oh.. me?”
“Yeah. I’m sorry for saying that so suddenly yesterday.”
“No.. um.. was it a punishment game or something?”
“No, it wasn’t.”
Ah. The most plausible story was a punishment game, but it’s already been overturned. In the meantime, I didn’t mind her speaking informally.
Because it felt so natural.
As if we had always talked like that.
“I kept watching you. Then I found out you were going this way, so I waited.”
Flinch.
I wondered if it was okay, but suddenly fear gripped me at those words.
She was watching me? Why? I don’t even know her?
At that moment, it didn’t matter anymore whether the girl in front of me was pretty or not. Something more chilling and scary was slowly engulfing me.
Swoosh-
I took a step back.
“Ah..”
The girl frowned at my reaction and let out a pitiful groan. When she took a step forward.
I wondered if I should run away, so I turned around.
No matter how I thought about it, she wasn’t someone I knew!
If I had known such a face, there’s no way I would have forgotten it!
As I was about to run back with the thought that I should take a different route from tomorrow.
“Don’t go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
My feet stopped at that cry that seemed mixed with tears.
At the same time, I turned my head slightly and looked back.
“Don’t go.. please… listen to me…”
At that pitiful sight of her crying and saying that.
My body wouldn’t move as if it had been nailed to the ground.
I couldn’t leave her like this.
I don’t know if it’s because she’s pretty or why.
But I felt like I should never leave her like this.
