Ep. 82
Hee-na’s birthday was getting closer, and the anticipation was building. Even during my morning study sessions, my mind kept wandering. I was determined to stick to my study schedule, no matter what.
The thought of Hee-na’s birthday, when we’d both be free to do whatever we wanted as adults, was a major distraction. Her new place opening soon, the black lingerie we’d picked out together—it all swirled in my head every morning.
Even looking at study materials felt like a challenge. I was bursting with pent-up energy, forcing me to practice serious mental discipline during my study time from morning until lunch.
Honestly, I felt like I could just go for it now, instead of waiting for her birthday, which was only a few days away. But I’d been looking forward to that day for so long, it felt like a waste to jump the gun. Of course, we almost crossed the line the other day when we were in the mood, but we managed to stop ourselves!
I wrestled with these thoughts and studied for a few hours. I concentrate best early in the morning, so I usually studied from then until lunchtime. The rest of the time, I either rested or squeezed in extra study time after dates.
I considered taking a break and starting fresh in March, but I’d gotten into the habit of studying alongside Hee-na’s schedule last year. Now, I feel anxious if I don’t study.
Today, I studied until around two in the afternoon. While eating an apple that my mom had prepared, I waited for Hee-na’s call.
Because today was finally the day.
-Drrrring
“Hello? Did the move go smoothly?”
─”Yeah! No problem! Is your morning study session almost over? Can you come over?”
“Of course! I’ll be right there!”
─”Don’t rush, and be careful getting here!”
It was the day Hee-na was moving!
—
Despite being told to be careful, I hurried to her new place as quickly as possible. I’d originally wanted to help with the move, but the movers and Hee-sung hyung [older brother/male friend] told me off, saying a student like me wouldn’t be much help.
So, I obediently waited, studying as usual.
“Ah! Yeon-hoo’s here! Over here~”
“You came quickly.”
Hee-na and Hee-sung hyung were standing side by side in front of the officetel [a multi-purpose building with both residential and commercial units], welcoming me. I ran to her in an instant, took her hand, and looked around.
“Where are your parents?”
“Dad had work and went back first, and Mom is in the room. Was it hard getting here?”
“Not hard at all. You must be tired from moving the luggage. Are you okay?”
While Hee-na and I were gazing at each other with smiles and chatting, a blunt voice cut in from the side.
“I moved all the luggage, so what’s there to be tired about? You have Mom’s card, right?”
“Yeah, I have it. We’re going now.”
*Where to* as soon as I arrive?
I wondered about Hee-na’s answer, but I kept quiet for now. She must have something planned.
“Alright. I’ll stop by Mela and get Mom some coffee.”
“The cafe where you interviewed? You’re going all the way there?”
“How long does it take? It’s 10 minutes away. And if I don’t show my face when I’m nearby, the manager noona [term of endearment for an older sister or female friend] will be sulky.”
She seemed pretty easygoing when I met her, so I didn’t think she was the type to get sulky about that. But I only saw her briefly once, so I can’t say for sure.
Anyway, Hee-sung hyung left after saying that. As soon as he was out of sight, I turned to Hee-na and asked,
“But where are we going? I just thought you were going to show me the cleaned-up room.”
“The mart [supermarket]!”
“Do you need to buy something?”
“I brought most of it, but I don’t have much left of things like toothbrushes and toothpaste, so I’m going to buy those. And I’ll buy anything else I need if I see it.”
“Ah~ It’s close from here, so we can just go for a bit.”
“Yeah! Shall we go then?”
“Okay.”
I took Hee-na’s hand, and we started walking. On the way to the mart, she was constantly smiling and telling me all about the move.
“When I was packing this time, I found a lot of clothes that I don’t wear anymore. It was really hard throwing them all away with Mom yesterday.”
“We must have found a lot of our matching couple outfits too.”
“A lot~ Do you remember that? The denim shorts and t-shirt we wore when we went to the beach two years ago.”
“I remember. I think we wore it once while dating last summer too.”
I think so, but honestly, I’m not sure. We’ve matched quite a few couple outfits.
“I put it away after last summer, but I found it while cleaning up yesterday. But it’s really worn out… Should we match a different style this summer?”
“Yeah, maybe. Now that I think about it, it’s like we matched our looks today too.”
“Hehe, really?”
Hee-na’s outfit today was black pants and a knit top, with a gray oversized cardigan over it. It was probably the cardigan we bought together around this time last year. Coincidentally, I was wearing the same cardigan, but with jeans and a white sweatshirt underneath.
We hadn’t planned it, but it turned out to be a couple look. The weather was warm, so it was too hot for a coat or padding, so I wore a cardigan.
Since we were wearing a couple look, we took a picture on the street and headed to the mart. Hee-na’s officetel is perfectly located, with the subway and bus stops only about 5 minutes away on foot, and the medium-sized mart we were going to was also close. Even closer was a convenience store.
Besides, there were so many places to order delivery food from, probably because it’s a university district. And the apartment itself is really nice too. It’s truly an ideal, dream life, isn’t it?
Maybe that’s why Hee-na’s energy was off the charts. I’ve almost never seen her looking this happy.
While listening to Hee-na’s chatter, we arrived at the mart before I knew it. As we went inside, Hee-na grabbed a shopping basket, so I took it and held it for her. Hee-na let out a silly laugh, “Heu-hu-huh,” and linked arms with me.
“You said you needed a toothbrush and toothpaste, right? Is it that way?”
“Let’s just take a slow look around while going around once~”
“Okay.”
I strolled around the mart leisurely with Hee-na, as if taking a walk. In the snack corner, we bought some snacks to eat later. Hee-na stared intently at the grocery corner, thinking about trying to cook soon.
I was a little worried about that, but her mother had probably packed quite a few things, and it seemed like it would be okay for the two of us to cook together when I was there. I’ve been steadily learning from my mom, so I’m confident I can handle it to some extent.
While looking around, I spotted the bathroom supplies that Hee-na said she needed.
As soon as we arrived, Hee-na looked at each item and asked for my opinion.
“Yeon-hoo, which toothpaste is good?”
“Anything?”
I’ve never worried about the type of toothpaste, so I had no preference. Isn’t it all the same?
“Don’t say that~ Then what type of toothbrush do you like?”
“One with micro bristles? I don’t really know what other kinds there are besides that.”
“Like this?”
She grabbed the type of toothbrush I mentioned and put it in the shopping basket without hesitation. Not only that, but she was also holding up each of the toothbrush cups and worrying about them. Not individual ones, but ones that are in a set. Looking at that, I couldn’t help but wonder why Hee-na asked for my opinion.
“Are you picking out mine too?”
“Yeah!”
“Hmm… please make my cup mint colored.”
“Then how about this? A mint and pink set!”
“Oh, that’s good. It’s pretty, isn’t it?”
“Right?”
There was no need to be embarrassed now, and there was no need to hold back. I knew that I’d be visiting Hee-na very often once she started living on her own, and Hee-na and my family knew it too. As such, there’s nothing strange about having my things set up for couples.
One problem is that I don’t use a cup when I brush my teeth. Is it better not to say anything unnecessary when she’s shopping with such a happy face?
“Do you need anything else?”
“Well… I can share my cleansing foam or soap… What about shampoo? It didn’t irritate your scalp when we used it at my house, did it?”
“It was fine. It smelled good.”
I had used it a few times when I stayed overnight at Hee-na’s house very occasionally. The shampoo scent that I usually smelled from Hee-na was also coming from me, so it felt a little ticklish.
“Then I don’t need shampoo either. Next~”
She stuck close to me, lost in thought. It was practically like we were already living together, picking out items to use together in her new place.
“Shower ball and bathroom slippers! Let’s buy these as a couple too!”
“One shower ball is… no. Let’s buy two.”
“Heung~? Really? Maybe one is enough?”
There was only one shower towel in our house. However, it’s not like the whole family uses it in common, because I don’t use it when I shower. I don’t know if my parents or brothers use it or not.
So unconsciously, I wondered, do we really need two? I thought, if there’s one, it’s like we’re going to use it together.
But without missing my momentary slip of the tongue, Hee-na stretched out the end of her words and playfully held only one in her hand.
Then she whispered softly in my ear.
“We can wash each other with one, right?”
“Hah…”
I let out a small sigh at her seductive words. To provoke me like this when there are only a few days left.
Sigh, yeah. I don’t need to hold back anymore, right?
“Yeah, buy only one! One is enough! Got it?”
I said it confidently. Then, Hee-na showed a flustered look—
“Really?! Then I’m only buying one? No taking back your words! Bringing one from home is also forbidden!”
“……”
There was no sign of being flustered at all.
No, I didn’t know she would accept it with such shining eyes. But do I really need to use a shower ball? I wash well even without it.
“Not using it is also forbidden! I’ll be watching you!”
Did she read my mind? More than that, *watching* me.
How?
