Ep. 83
My curiosity was overwhelming, so I couldn’t resist asking.
“How are you going to keep an eye on me?”
“How else? I have to come with you, of course!” she replied with a playful tone.
“Oh?”
She answered with a bright smile, as if wondering why I’d ask something so obvious.
*She definitely knows what she’s doing,* I thought. *This sly girlfriend of mine.*
“Which slippers do you want to buy?”
If I kept talking about *that*, my lower body would be beyond saving, so I changed the subject. After all, all of this is hypothetical until after Heena’s birthday. From then on, Heena’s intrusion would be welcome anytime.
Heena didn’t push the topic and went along with my change of subject.
“Should we get something cute?”
“I do like cute animals, but there’s no need to go that far with slippers… I’m fine with anything, so I’ll leave the slippers up to you. You know my size, right?”
“Then these bear ones!”
“Yeah, yeah.”
Without hesitation, Heena put a set of cute bear slippers in the shopping basket. Unlike the toothbrush cups, they were a pink pair for men and a mint pair for women. If she was going with pink, I wish she had picked hot pink, but unfortunately, that color wasn’t available.
“Are we done with the bathroom stuff?”
“I can’t think of anything else right now, so let’s come back later if we need anything… oh?”
I didn’t think there was anything else to buy here, so I was about to take a step when Heena’s gaze was fixed on one spot. She was staring intently at the middle of the aisle connecting the bathroom corner to the household goods section. I followed her gaze to see what had captured her attention so much.
There were several types of small, square boxes gathered in one place. *Those things* for nighttime activities [condoms].
The moment I saw them, my brain froze for a moment, and I couldn’t say anything, but next to me, Heena was contemplating with a slightly serious face.
“Which one should we get?”
“Wait, are you going to buy some?”
“We’ll need them soon, right? Or… should we do it without?”
“No, well… we should have them.”
Should I tell her? The truth is, I’ve been studying up on things lately and ordered some online without my family knowing.
If I don’t tell her, it looks like Heena is going to put a few of them in the shopping basket, so I had no choice.
“Heena.”
“Yeah?”
“I already bought some, so you don’t need to buy them here.”
“……”
And at my words, this time Heena paused for a moment and was silent. Soon, she made her eyes into crescent shapes and clung to me.
“You bought them in advance? Is that so~?”
She seemed very happy, but I tried to be as nonchalant as possible as I replied to Heena, who was teasing me like that.
“We can’t have a baby yet.”
“A baby? I’m okay with it!”
“How are you going to go to school?”
“I can take a year off! Do you prefer a daughter or a son? I hope it’s a son who looks like you~ He’ll definitely be super cute!”
“Of course, I’d prefer a daughter who looks like you.”
“I like a mini Yeon-woo more…”
“I like a mini Heena more.”
We left that spot while having such silly conversations. Even though she says things like this, Heena always has plans for the future, so it’s probably not her true feelings.
“Do you remember what I told you before? That if we have a baby, I can go to the army as a full-time reserve [a system where individuals can serve in the military while also pursuing other careers or studies]?”
“……”
It might be true for Heena. More than that, as the army gets closer, I feel a great temptation from those words.
Anyway, I cut off this topic around here and didn’t continue it any further. Heena’s ears were slightly red, probably because she was a little embarrassed.
We bought several other things as well. There were several ingredients that my mother-in-law, or rather, the auntie, had given us, so we didn’t need them right now, and things like lint rollers that we use quite often. We also chose a couple set of cups to use for drinking, not toothbrushing.
Even if the cups were like that, I stopped her from buying new chopsticks and rice bowls, all for couples. It would be one thing if we hadn’t brought any, but I said we had some from home.
Heena was sulky for a moment, but that was only for a moment, and she was busy finding new couple items again. Heena likes matching things so much. I like it too, though.
I guess the reason she called me out was to pick these things together because they’re things I’ll be using. But I felt a little sorry because we were buying them with the auntie’s card.
“Is it okay to buy my stuff like this with that card?”
“Mom told me to.”
“She told you to buy my stuff too?”
“Yeah~ She told me to take good care of her son-in-law.”
Ooh yeah.
If she gave permission, then it’s okay. I should thank her later.
After going around roughly once, we returned to the food ingredients corner at the beginning, when we heard a voice calling us from nearby.
“Try some bacon before you go! You too, newlyweds~”
“Newlyweds? Us?”
“Oh my? I thought you were~”
I thought so. We look like we’re in our early twenties at best. There’s no way we’re newlyweds.
However, as a salesperson, the auntie at the tasting corner was no joke. If she had just said, “Come and try it, couples~”, we would have smiled and passed by. But she specifically mentioned the word “newlyweds,” which Heena would love so much.
Sure enough, Heena smiled brightly and approached her. And before even trying the sample bacon, she put a pack in the shopping basket.
Isn’t that too easy?
“This looks delicious~ right?”
“Well… no. It looks delicious. Can we try one each?”
“Of course!”
It’s not expensive, and it’s okay to buy one of these. I took a toothpick, picked up a piece of bacon, and put it in Heena’s mouth. Heena chewed it and fed one to me as well.
It is delicious. It’s hard for it to not be delicious, though.
“You two look so in love~ The husband is so sweet~”
While watching us, the auntie added another hit. She saw that we came running at the word “newlyweds” and added words that would make us feel even better.
“Heheheh… Is that so? That’s what they say~ honey!”
At the word “husband,” the corners of Heena’s mouth reached her ears. It felt like I was hearing Heena’s laughter very often today. She must be really happy.
More than that, *honey*, what’s with that title? It feels like my heart is being pierced?
It was a title I had never heard from Heena before. Usually, she calls me by my name, and sometimes when we’re role-playing, it’s “oppa” [a Korean term used by women to address older brothers or close male friends/romantic interests].
I suddenly felt so good at her unfamiliar title that I almost grabbed another pack of bacon without realizing it. But the rational judgment that we wouldn’t even eat it all if we bought two packs came back just in time, and I put it down.
I took Heena, who couldn’t easily leave that spot as if she wanted her to say more of those words, and slowly headed to the checkout counter.
“You seem to be in a really good mood today?”
“Yeah~? Well, we’re starting to live on our own now. And from when we first came in─”
“From then?”
“Like that auntie said a little while ago, it felt like we really came grocery shopping as newlyweds.”
“Ah~ I felt a little like that too.”
Not newlyweds, but it feels like we’re living together.
“Right? When I thought about it like that, I suddenly felt so good.”
She says that and laughs happily. I chuckled at the sight.
Yeah, what’s wrong with being an easy woman once in a while? She’s so pretty and cute.
—
After finishing the grocery shopping at the mart, where we bought more things than expected, we were finally able to enter Heena’s place. Except for when I came with that pleasant uncle, I had never been inside the house since then.
So, with a nervous heart, as if I were visiting for the first time, I followed Heena inside, and the house looked exactly as I had seen it then. The only differences were that the floor, which was under construction, was now clean, and that various items were placed here and there, giving it a lived-in feel.
As we entered, the auntie and Heesung hyung [older brother] came out of the room to greet us.
“It’s been a while, you!”
“I saw you a few days ago…”
“Oh my, oh my! If I haven’t seen my son-in-law in a few days, it’s been a while!”
“Yes, I guess so.”
If my mother-in-law says so, what can I do?
“What did you buy?”
“Things to use at home.”
“What’s this? Everything’s a pair. Is Han Yeon-woo living here?”
“I’m not living here.”
“Not yet.”
Heena immediately added “not yet” to my words. Nevertheless, the auntie and hyung didn’t care at all and helped with the organizing. It seemed like the two of them just thought it was a matter of time.
While taking out the things we bought from the living room floor, Heesung hyung started picking on them one by one.
“What are these pink bear slippers? Do you like this kind of thing?”
“What about it, oppa? They’re cute, aren’t they?”
“Ugh… hey. If you don’t like it, just say you don’t like it!”
“They’re cute, why.”
“You’re always getting bossed around.”
What’s wrong with it, it’s for home use.
While saying all sorts of things with his mouth, he carefully takes them out one by one and unwraps them. It seemed like there were few people who suited the word “tsundere” [a character who is initially cold or hostile but gradually reveals a warmer, more affectionate side] as well as him.
And the auntie was helping out next to him, smiling.
“I told you to buy them, but our Heena really went all out, didn’t she? Seeing that you bought everything in pairs?”
“Mom, how’s this? The cups are cute, right?”
“Yeon-woo’s cup is pink too?”
“No, Yeon-woo’s is mint.”
“Oh my, they match~”
“Right?”
While unwrapping the plastic packaging and chatting like that, the bacon, the only food item we bought besides snacks, came out. The auntie tilted her head at the sight of it.
“Why did you buy this? Did you want to eat bacon?”
“That? The person at the tasting corner said that Yeon-woo and I looked like newlyweds~ I felt so good that I just bought it!”
“Not because you wanted to eat it?”
“Yeah!”
“…Okay~ I guess that can happen~”
Indeed, the auntie seemed a little taken aback by Heena’s words. Heesung hyung was looking at me with a dumbfounded face.
Why are you looking at me?
“You didn’t stop her?”
“Try being there, hyung. You wouldn’t be able to say anything.”
“Ahem…”
Why is someone who knows so well acting like this?
Anyway, after the organizing was done somehow, I was able to sneak a peek into the inner room. I hadn’t seen the room yet because I sat down in the living room and unpacked my luggage as soon as I arrived. I’m dating Heena, and Heena probably wouldn’t mind, but I was hesitant to look around the room as I pleased.
Heena noticed my appearance, got up, took my hand, and went into the room. The room that I finally got to see, following her, was not much different from Heena’s original room. The only differences were that the bed and desk were bigger than the ones Heena used to use.
“How is it?”
“You cleaned up well. But why did you buy such big desks and beds?”
“I was going to put a computer on the desk later.”
“Oh? Are you going to buy a computer?”
“I’m not going to buy one, but you’re going to bring a computer later, right?”
Indeed. It’s for me when we start living together. Should I gratefully accept this thoughtfulness, huh?
If I’m going to be staying here for a long time, I’ll definitely bring it for playing or studying.
“And there were too many frames, so there wasn’t enough space on the desk. I’m thinking of changing to a type that sticks to the wall now.”
“Well, we’ve taken so many pictures in the meantime.”
Heena had been decorating her desk with framed photos since before, but now there were too many of them. There were so many that she put a few in the living room of Heena’s main house. I was surprised when I first noticed that our couple photo was placed next to the TV.
Anyway, let’s leave the desk aside. Then the bed, um. Actually, I don’t think I need to ask. It’s obvious.
So I didn’t bother to say anything more, but Heena took out another pillow from the closet, hugged it tightly, and said with a smile.
“The bed, you know? I’ve prepared your pillow too.”
I know it all too well.
