Ep. 95
A few days later, it was the day Heena was leaving for her orientation trip. Usually, a typical freshman would be feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness about meeting new people, but the atmosphere here felt more like a funeral home.
Heena, who usually always had a smile on her face, was now slumped over and dazed, in terrible shape. After the angry Heena she showed me last time, this was the first time I had seen her so visibly disheartened.
Of course, she had been complaining about the orientation trip for days, but I thought she would just go and come back. But Heena clung to me until the very last minute before leaving, and then headed to the front door like a zombie just as time was running out.
“I’ll keep contacting you… Please pick up. Okay?”
“You can video call me. I’ll answer your calls first, no matter what.”
“Okay… Give me three days’ worth of kisses before you go.”
“Come here.”
-Chu
“Chup… Heuu…”
Hugging Heena, who was slumped over with her bag on at the front door, we shared a long, deep kiss. She had already whined about wanting to be held because she would be lonely while we were apart last night before going to bed, so I had already given her plenty of kisses and everything. But what did it matter when Heena looked like she was about to cry?
As the long kiss ended, I held her forehead to mine and said goodbye.
“Have a good trip. Be careful not to get hurt.”
“Okay… I love you, Yeon-hoo. Don’t forget me.”
“Heena, you know you’re coming back the day after tomorrow, right? Anyway, I love you too. You have to go now. You’ll be late.”
“I’ll be back…”
I waved as Heena, who couldn’t easily take her leave until the very end, slowly walked out the front door.

As the door closed and she left, I was alone for the first time in a long time. She must be sending me messages as she goes, because my phone is already ringing non-stop.
To be honest, I felt quite empty too, knowing that Heena, who had always been by my side recently, would be gone until the day after tomorrow.
Still, her being gone for a short time didn’t bring any major changes to my life. I just studied as usual, and rested or cleaned the house in my spare time. Heena also sent fewer messages when I was studying.
At the same time, I could feel even more deeply what mothers all over the world feel when they do housework. When I was at my parents’ house, cleaning my own room was a huge hassle, but here, I felt energized thinking about cleaning the place for Heena to come back to.
Of course, it’s a little annoying, but the feeling that I have to do it and the feeling that I want to do it are stronger.
And as I do the housework one by one, I start to feel Heena’s absence everywhere, because we were always together at home, no matter what we were doing.
While tidying up around the sofa, I realized that I was thinking, ‘I was sitting here with Heena just a little while ago.’
Heena had always been telling me that she couldn’t live without me, but now I realize that I’m the one who can’t live without Heena.
Two years. It’s only been two years since we met.
Before I knew it, Heena had become a part of my life, my everything.

“So, is Lee Heena liberated now that she’s gone to the orientation trip?”
“Watch your mouth. Liberated? I miss her like crazy.”
“So much for the lovey-dovey stuff, damn it.”
“To think I have to hear this kind of talk as soon as I see you guys after so long…”
As evening approached, I called Soo-hwang and Yoon-sung to hang out for the first time in a while. The other guys either went to orientation trips like Heena, or were busy because the semester was starting soon, so I only got to see these two.
Soo-hwang had already gone through all of his school’s orientation schedules, and Yoon-sung was about to become a full-time employee at the snack bar, so he was burning his last bit of freedom. We hadn’t seen each other often, but we had been chatting quite actively in our group chat, and since Heena was away, I thought it would be nice to see each other.
“I can’t believe the day would come when Han Yeon-hoo would organize a gathering after graduation.”
“It’s not really a gathering when most of these guys didn’t come, is it?”
“It’s not that they couldn’t come… It’s just that people change over time. Is it Lee Heena’s power?”
“What are you talking about?”
“Hey, Han Yeon.”
Next to Yoon-sung, who was spouting nonsense, Kim Soo-hwang called me in a low voice. Seeing this guy with his huge build wearing a serious face, it felt like he was about to bring up something huge, like he had buried someone somewhere. But it’s Kim Soo-hwang, so he’s probably going to say something useless again.
“What.”
“We couldn’t talk about it in the group chat because we thought Lee Heena might see it…”
“What is it?”
“Have you guys… done it?”
As expected, it was a completely pointless story, but Yoon-sung also leaned in slightly, curious, and started listening. It must have been something they were curious about. I would have been too.
And to that question, I leaned back in the cafe chair, smirked, and answered.
“We’re even living together now, so wouldn’t we have? You forever-alone bastards.”
“You son of a… I’m so jealous, damn it.”
“Aren’t you about to get a girlfriend soon too? I heard you met someone you were hitting it off with at the orientation trip.”
Soo-hwang had mentioned in the group chat a while ago that he was about to get a girlfriend, and he was already getting ahead of himself. Since it was before the semester started, if there had been any progress, they would have made plans to meet up since then.
But at my question, Soo-hwang sighed deeply and shook his head.
“I don’t know… I don’t know if it’s a ‘some’ [a Korean term for the ambiguous stage before a relationship] or a ‘fish farm’ [where someone juggles multiple potential partners]. There’s a separate room for the guys in the department, and her story comes up once in a while.”
“Is she doing that to other guys too?”
“Yeah, it seems like it. She’s cute, so there are a lot of guys in the department group chat who are subtly trying to get her attention.”
“It’s hard to say anything since I haven’t seen it myself, but it’s suspicious.”
“Suspicious my ass. Isn’t it 100% a fish farm?”
I tried to put it nicely for Kim Soo-hwang, but Yoon-sung just said it bluntly. He has no consideration at all.
“Ha, damn it. I’ve been watching Han Yeon-hoo do that for two years, and I’ve become so eager to date. But it’s getting ruined before it even starts, it breaks my heart, sigh. It’s your fault.”
“Yeah, let’s just say it’s my fault. Do you want a bagel?”
“A bagel, seriously.”
But he must not have given her his heart too much, because he laughed and changed the subject. Well, it’s not easy to fall for someone you’ve only seen for two or three days at the orientation trip. Heena was one-sided, but she said she had been watching me for a few days at first.
Besides that, we talked about the updates on friends who had been hard to see since graduation. I hadn’t seen the guys since the graduation ceremony in early February. I didn’t meet them because I couldn’t focus on anything right before my big event with Heena, and after that, I suddenly started living with her, so I was busy in many ways.
As we were casually gossiping about our friends, Soo-hwang cautiously brought up Heena.
“But she went to the orientation trip too, right? Aren’t you worried?”
“What are you worried about?”
“Lee Heena always gets hit on a lot when she’s out alone, so when she goes there, the classmates and upperclassmen will be all over her.”
“Ah~ that kind of thing.”
I think I knew what Soo-hwang was talking about. Because Heena is so pretty. She sometimes shows me her goofy side, but when she’s in front of other people, she’s a beautiful woman with a mature charm. It would be a lie to say that I’m not worried about it at all. What should I say about this.
“When I think about what Heena does for me usually, I feel sorry for even worrying about that kind of thing.”
“Crazy.”
“Honestly, don’t you guys think so too? I just naturally think that Heena will take care of it herself.”
“You never know what might happen with people… but I guess she would.”
“Lee Heena’s smile is really scary when she’s putting pressure on people. If they keep bothering her, she’ll show them what it means to curse with her eyes.”
“Hey, what’s so scary about Heena?”
“But only this bastard doesn’t know that.”
“You should have seen Lee Heena’s face when she only took you out to drink at the beginning of the year.”
“I almost shit my pants back then.”
I ignored these guys’ slander of Heena. Heena was a little scary when she was upset about my porn, but that was the first time I had seen that side of her. Where else would you find a girlfriend as gentle and innocent as Heena?
-Drrr, drrr, drrr, deung, deung, deung
“Hey, isn’t that your phone ringing? It’s ringing like crazy?”
“It’s probably Heena sending messages, so don’t worry about it. I’ll just reply once.”
“……”
After asking for their understanding for a moment, I checked the messages, and as expected, the person who was sending messages like crazy right now was Heena. There was nothing special in the content either.
[Yeon-hoo, I miss you~], [It’s no fun! I have to be hugging you at this time…], [Can’t I just say I’m not feeling well and go back first? It’s Gangwon-do, so I’ll be able to go quickly.], [(Puppy crying emoticon)], [You said you were going to meet your friends, right? Are they doing well?], [I have no interest in the club, but they keep recommending it, so it’s annoying.], etc.
I don’t know what she’s doing there right now, but it was clear that she had absolutely no interest in today’s event. I quickly scanned through the messages and just sent her a word of encouragement before putting my phone down again.
Heena knew that I was meeting my friends today, so she told me that I didn’t have to reply to all of her messages and just give her a short response.
Anyway, when I turned my attention back to the two of them, their expressions were very strange. Like they were shocked.
“Why are you guys like that?”
“…No, well. If you’re happy, that’s all that matters. What can we say? Right, Jung Yoon-sung?”
“Still, if it’s her, it might be okay even if she’s like that? I’m so jealous of a girlfriend who’s so clingy…”
“Come to think of it, that’s true. So I guess we should beat up Han Yeon-hoo?”
“Seems right.”
“What, you bastards.”
Seriously, what. You guys should get girlfriends too! If you can!
