“Get down!” someone yelled. Red sword energy flew towards them. Anyone seeing it had two choices: run or block. ‘Too late…’ someone thought.
It was too late to move. A Chang Gui squad member focused all his power. He put it into his sword and swung hard at the red energy.
*CRASH!*
The sword energy hit his sword with a loud crash. It sounded like metal screaming against metal. The sound hurt their ears.
“Kugh!” he grunted.
A strong jolt went up his arm.
‘This attack is powerful!’ he thought. But instead of fear, he felt excited to fight.
‘Stronger than I thought!’ he thought. ‘But he is the Mount Hua Sword Saint. It should be strong.’
He blocked it! That meant he could fight this person!
“Not bad…” he started to say, ready to yell a battle cry. But then, he saw a white flash.
*WHIP!*
A sword, fast as lightning, went right into his open mouth. It went between his teeth, cut his tongue, and reached the back of his throat.
‘No…’ he thought.
*CRUNCH!*
A cold sound filled the air. Then, silence.
He fell to the ground, lifeless.
Everyone stared. They couldn’t run, couldn’t attack. Their eyes were stuck on the sword sticking out of their friend’s neck.
*Drip.*
A drop of blood fell from the white sword onto the white sand.
It was strange. They had seen many people die. Enemies, friends – death was normal for them.
But this death felt different. They couldn’t say why, but their hearts felt cold and scared. This was something new. Something worse.
Chung Myung yanked his sword out of the dead man’s mouth. He pushed off the sand and ran forward.
“Block him!”
“Kill him!”
Fear filled the Chang Gui squad. They felt like their hearts would explode. But they were Maninbang. They couldn’t run. They had to fight.
Desperate, they charged at Chung Myung. Blue energy shot out from their swords.
*WHOOSH!*
Suddenly, many streams of blue sword energy fell like rain towards Chung Myung.
Chung Myung dropped low to the ground. He moved like a snake through grass.
*BOOM! BOOM!*
The sword energy missed him by inches and crashed into the sand behind. Using the explosions to push him forward, Chung Myung ran even faster.
One Chang Gui member saw his chance. He jumped at Chung Myung, trying to get close.
They knew from fighting many times: sometimes attack is better than running. If they let him push them back, they would lose.
*SWIFT!*
His sword came down fast and hard.
Not fancy, just deadly. He wanted to hurt Chung Myung badly, not just kill him with one blow.
‘Die!’ he thought.
It was a good move.
But he was fighting Chung Myung.
*THUD!*
Chung Myung suddenly stuck his sword into the sand.
He stopped so fast, it was like magic.
*WHOOSH!*
The other man’s sword missed Chung Myung’s head and hit the sand. He looked down and saw Chung Myung grinning, teeth showing. It was a scary smile.
*RIP!*
Chung Myung’s sword, bent like a bow, sprang up and stabbed right into the man’s stomach.
*SQUELCH!*
Cold steel went deep. Before he could even gasp, the sword twisted inside him, tearing him up.
“Kkeuaaaaah!” he screamed.
It was pain like he had never felt. Not just from the cut. A freezing power from the sword crushed his inner energy and burned his nerves. It felt like every nerve in his body was being ripped apart.
Chung Myung’s eyes narrowed. He jumped back fast.
*RIP! RIP! RIP!*
Swords suddenly burst out from inside the screaming man’s body. They were the swords of his own squad members, who were behind him and attacking Chung Myung! The swords stopped just before Chung Myung’s face.
Blood from the sword tips sprayed onto Chung Myung’s face. It was hot and smelled like fish.
The man was stuck on the swords like meat on sticks. He shook and gasped.
Chung Myung looked at him. No pity in his eyes. This man was evil. He would have killed anyone without a second thought.
*BANG!*
Chung Myung kicked the man in the chest.
The swords inside him ripped his body apart. He exploded into pieces. Blood and bits of flesh flew everywhere, covering the men behind him.
“Heuaaah!”
Even with their friend’s body parts falling on them, the Chang Gui squad didn’t even blink. They just screamed and attacked Chung Myung even harder.
Chung Myung smirked and tightened his grip on his sword.
*SWISH! SWISH! SWISH!*
Many sword shadows appeared like ghosts. They cut through the charging men in a flash.
“Kugh!”
Before they could even cry out, Chung Myung was on them, like a monster. He stabbed his sword at the next man.
The Chang Gui member in front of Chung Myung looked at him with hate. He forgot about defense and aimed his sword at Chung Myung’s neck.
*SWISH!*
Chung Myung’s sword went through the man’s chest. The man’s sword just missed Chung Myung’s neck, only scratching his skin.
“Kraaaah!”
Even with a sword in his chest, the man tried to hit Chung Myung’s neck. He swung his sword with all his hate. But he was too slow.
Chung Myung quickly hit the man’s arm with his elbow, knocking the sword away. Then, with his sword still stuck in the man’s chest, Chung Myung pushed forward.
“Now!”
“Attack him!”
The others yelled. They saw their chance. Chung Myung’s sword was stuck! It would take time to pull it out. They could attack him then!
“Th-this…”
The man with the sword in his chest knew what to do. He let go of his own sword. He grabbed Chung Myung’s sword with both hands and held on tight.
He would die, but he would take Chung Myung down with him.
Then, something strange happened.
The back of the man with the sword in his chest started to get bigger. It looked like his back was swelling up, but it was really his clothes.
‘What?’ thought Jeong Tak, running towards Chung Myung. He frowned. He saw Chung Myung’s sword moving in the man’s chest. Just a little, but moving. His face went white.
“Get down!” Jeong Tak yelled.
But it was too late. The man’s clothes ripped open. Red sword energy exploded out!
Many tiny pieces, like flower petals.
Sword energy, like a storm of red plum blossoms, rushed out and covered them all.
“Aaaaaaargh!”
“Aaaaaaaaargh!”
Screams filled the air. The plum blossom sword energy, small like flowers but sharp as knives, cut them to pieces in a heartbeat.
“Keuheok…”
“Keureureuk…”
Only the heavy breathing of the dying men could be heard.
Chang Gui leader Beom Chung stared at the bloody scene. He couldn’t believe it.
Just one step.
It all happened because he stepped back just once.
One small mistake, and almost ten of his men were dead in seconds.
“You…”
Beom Chung looked at the red blood soaking the white sand. He forced himself to look up. He saw Chung Myung standing there. No, wait. He saw Chung Myung holding another Chang Gui member, who was looking right at Beom Chung.
“S-Squad leader…”
The Chang Gui member was on his knees, Chung Myung holding his hair. He was shaking like a leaf. Chung Myung’s sword was at his neck. He looked at Beom Chung, begging.
“S-Save me…”
Beom Chung had trained these men himself.
They were brave. They wouldn’t fear even demons. But this man was terrified.
What was he so scared of? Just death? Or something else?
“Yes…”
Chung Myung smiled, showing his white teeth. It was a cold, scary smile.
“This is more fun.”
*SWISH!*
Chung Myung’s sword sliced through the man’s neck. No hesitation.
*CHOP!*
Blood shot out like a fountain from the clean cut.
The blood rained down red. Beom Chung watched Chung Myung laugh in the blood rain. He clenched his teeth.
“Y-You… You bastard…”
“No, you’re wrong.”
“…What?”
Chung Myung grinned wider.
“It’s not ‘bastard.’ It’s ‘bastards.’ Plural.”
Beom Chung understood then. He turned his head.
Chung Myung was running towards the rest of the Chang Gui squad, who were now confused and scared. Many lines of sword energy were flying at them, fast as lightning.
“Watch out,” Chung Myung said quietly. “They are even worse than me.”
Then Chung Myung laughed loudly. Beom Chung felt ice in his veins.
