Crack! A crowd of people rushed up the white wall. It was so smooth, like polished glass.
“Climb! Keep climbing!” A desperate shout cut through the air. It was a cry full of fear, and it made everyone’s hearts beat faster.
“Hoo! Hoo!” A man climbed, digging his fingers into the wall. He looked down for a moment. It was a long, long way to fall.
“Ah….” Fear flashed in his eyes. Looking at the tall cliff and all the people climbing, even a brave warrior from Sapa felt his courage weaken. These warriors had seen many dangers, but this was strange and scary.
“Climb!”
“D-Don’t push… Ah, Aaaaargh!” Someone lost his footing as people below pushed upwards. He slipped and fell from the wall.
“Aaaaargh!”
“Aaargh!” Screams came from everywhere.
Sapa was a group made up of all sorts of fighters. Some were strong, some were weak. So, climbing together was always going to be messy.
“Get out of the way!”
“Aaaaargh!” When your life is in danger, you only think of yourself. People who were slow were pulled down. People who couldn’t climb were kicked aside. They just looked up and kept climbing.
They climbed for one reason only.
“It’s, it’s coming!” Whoosh! The flames were back! They rushed up the cliff like the wind was pushing them. Some people were strong enough to use their inner power to push back the fire and live. But for others, it was the end.
“Aaaaargh!” A person screamed and fell, hands covering his burning face.
Even before the Wudang fighters attacked, people were dying. It seemed like a foolish attack, wasting lives. But this attack was causing big problems for Wudang.
“They’re coming!” The fire and the crowd of people looked like a nightmare. It was like watching monsters climb out of a dark pit. And these monsters were only trying to hurt Wudang.
“Stay calm!” But Wudang had one thing that helped them. They had climbed this cliff before.
“Pour them down!”
“Yes!” Rumble! The Wudang fighters at the top of the cliff kicked down big piles of rocks. They had prepared these rocks earlier. It was a simple attack, not something fancy fighters usually do. But Wudang knew how dangerous it was. They had felt it themselves before. For people climbing, these rocks were worse than any sword.
Rumble! The rocks crashed against the cliff, breaking apart and smashing everything in their way. It was like a storm of stones falling on the people climbing below.
“Aaaaargh!” To climb, you needed one hand to hold on. The people climbing didn’t have magic shields to protect them, only their bodies. And bodies are weak against falling rocks.
Thwack! Thwaack!
“Aaaaargh!”
“Aargh!” Rocks hit people. Blood and bone broke. The rocks kept falling, hitting more and more people below.
“This…!” Wham! Suddenly, someone used their power and smashed a huge rock. A loud, angry voice yelled, “You idiots! Stop screaming and break the rocks! Do you think they’ll stop just because you cry? You useless fools!” It was Jang Han, a big, hairy man. His shout echoed through the canyon. He was breathing hard. He grabbed the leg of the man in front of him.
“Get out of my way! You’re useless!”
“Aaaaargh!” Jang Han threw the man aside and climbed higher. He started hitting the falling rocks with all his strength.
Wham! Wham! Wham! Wham! Wham! The rocks broke apart when they hit his power. Other strong fighters also started using their weapons to smash the rocks.
“Climb! Climb now! You can’t go back! If you don’t want to burn, climb and live!”
“Climb up! Now!” It was a smart and fast reaction. The Sapa fighters might not be as skilled as the famous fighting groups, but they were good at surviving battles. They knew how to live. That was their strength, especially in tough fights like this.
“Pour them down!” Again, rocks rained down the cliff.
Rumble!
“Break them!” But this time, the rocks didn’t stop the Sapa fighters. They smashed the rocks with their power. They had learned how to fight back.
“Sasuk!” The Wudang fighters were surprised that their rocks didn’t work. They looked at each other, unsure what to do. Heo Gong made a clicking sound with his tongue, annoyed. ‘If we had hot oil or gunpowder like in the old stories, we could stop them easily.’ But Wudang didn’t have time to prepare like that. Rocks could only do so much. Maybe they could throw logs? But would logs stop these fighters who could break rocks?
“Those Sapa fighters are trickier than they look,” Heo Gong said. He looked down at the cliff, his eyes hard. Then he turned and walked away from the edge.
“What’s the next plan?”
“We don’t need one.”
Hukong turned quickly, his sword flashing like lightning. White light burst from the blade, shooting up into the sky.
Whoosh!
The sword’s light, shaped like a crescent moon, shot out and pierced the ground.
Crack!
Then, it smashed through the cliff and flew into the sky. Everyone nearby stared, eyes wide with disbelief.
And then…
Creak… creak… creak…
The ground beneath their feet began to slide slowly toward the cliff edge, making a sound like something huge grinding against stone.
“Th-that…”
Creak… creak… creak…!
The severed land, now a giant boulder, moved faster toward the cliff, tilting dangerously.
The Wudang disciples were speechless. They couldn’t believe what they were seeing. But their shock was nothing compared to those watching from below.
“Uh…”
The fur-covered warrior at the front of the climbing group stopped, his mouth open. A huge shadow covered his wide-eyed face.
It was a gigantic rock, bigger than anyone could imagine.
Even Jang Hanjo, who had easily blocked falling stones before, felt despair as the giant rock tilted from the cliff.
“T-that…”
Rumble.
The mass of rock broke away from the cliff and began to fall.
Ruuuuuumble!
The boulder crashed down with a deafening roar that shook the entire cliff.
“Get out of the way!”
Those clinging to the cliff screamed and jumped away, unable to think about fighting back.
Boom! Rooooooar!
The cliff exploded, stone shards flying like angry bees in all directions. Dust and the smell of broken rock filled the air. The boulder—a thing that deserved to be called ‘Terror’—rolled, crushing and splattering the climbing villains like insects. Horror.
Kraaaash! Kraaaash!
“Aaaaaaargh!”
Those who could still scream were lucky. Those who couldn’t escape the boulder were crushed without a sound.
Kraaaash!
A man stumbled as a boulder hit him, his eyes wide with horror as he looked up.
‘How…?’
In the past, on the Yangtze River, they had to use explosives to blast the cliff to make a boulder this big.
But those Wudang bastards had cut the cliff with a sword, not explosives.
Did that sword light have the power of thousands of pounds of gunpowder? How could a human do that?
‘W-Wudang…’
Something he had forgotten in the heat of battle and madness came back to him.
The heavy weight of the name ‘Wudang’.
“Climb!”
A desperate cry came from one of the survivors.
“Climb! Now! Another boulder will fall! Faster, if you want to live!”
The words worked.
The result of giving in to fear was clear. Everyone started climbing the cliff with all their strength.
“Climb if you want to live! Once we’re over the cliff, we can tear those bastards’ throats out! Climb! Faster!”
Eyes full of despair, fear, and hatred turned toward the sky… toward the top of the cliff that touched the sky.
“Senior Brother!”
Hukong stood proudly at the cliff’s edge, calmly accepting the angry and hateful looks.
The Wudang disciples, watching Hukong’s back, felt a new sense of awe. The sword light Hukong showed was beyond anything they could hope to do.
Hukong was known as Wudang’s greatest talent, a genius, but who knew he had reached such heights? During his time alone, Hukong’s sword had become sharper than ever before.
“Roll more stones.”
“Yes, Senior Brother!”
The Wudang disciples, full of courage, moved perfectly together.
With Hukong, they could win. They could crush those hateful enemies completely.
That hope filled everyone’s heart, just as…
“Climb! I said climb! You sons of bitches! I’ll cut the throats of anyone who’s afraid! Start climbing now…”
The man below, who had been shouting himself hoarse, urging his men on, suddenly bit his lip.
Those who had already started climbing the cliff had no choice, but those who hadn’t yet started had options.
Since the huge boulder had fallen, those who hadn’t committed were slowly backing away, even though he killed a few to scare others.
At this rate, he was the one in trouble, not them. He needed to do something, but the scene had been so shocking that neither his words nor his blade had any effect.
“Move, you sons of bitches…”
He was about to shout another curse when a chilling feeling ran down his spine, and he turned around. The raging flames moved slightly to the sides.
Whoosh.
Then, a figure appeared, walking slowly forward.
“M-Military Advisor!”
“Greetings, Military Advisor!”
Ho Gamyeong, known as the Poisonous Heart Rakshasa, ignored their greetings. His cold eyes stared at the cliff. He looked at the damaged surface and the remains of the huge boulder below.
“Indeed, they have a trick or two.”
“M-Military Advisor! If we keep attacking the cliff like this, we’ll lose too many men.”
“And?”
“Sir?”
“And?”
The assistant flinched and quickly lowered his head. He couldn’t stand Ho Gamyeong’s emotionless gaze.
Ho Gamyeong glanced at him coldly before turning back to the cliff.
“I don’t care about losses. Push them harder.”
“Yes, Military Advisor!”
Ho Gamyeong’s gaze, without any feeling, settled on the figure standing alone on top of the cliff. His eyes, like ice, met Hukong’s across the gap.
Ho Gamyeong muttered, as if talking to himself.
“Today, we will destroy Wudang from this place.”
No turning back.
