Lee Han felt his face get hot. He had to explain himself, but his excuses sounded weak, even to his own ears.
Just then, the nameless hunter raised a hand, telling him to be quiet.
The hunter said, “The Wailing Boars are coming this way. Lower your voice.”
Lee Han was surprised.
Wailing Boars were monsters that lived in the Bitter Mountains and were very dangerous.
Wailing Boars were so scary that even bad people pretended to be attacked by them. They did this to get into the safe camp.
Wailing Boars looked like giant pigs. They were strong and could charge and hit hard. But their worst weapon wasn’t their size or teeth – it was their scream.
Their scream, like that of a banshee or mandrake, hurt the listener’s soul.
The nameless hunter had been listening to the ground. Now, his face looked very serious.
“Something’s strange… Wailing Boars don’t usually travel in groups. But today, they are moving together, like they are running from something,” the hunter said.
The nameless hunter felt worried because the monsters were acting strangely.
If a monster wasn’t acting normal, it meant something was wrong.
Lee Han wondered, ‘But why?’
“Could Professor Bendozol have scared them?” Lee Han asked.
The hunter said, “No. That professor might be scary, but he’s not monster-scary. Wizards aren’t monsters, after all.”
Lee Han thought, ‘Hmm. He might think differently if he met the headmaster.’
“One is coming this way. I have to take care of it. Cover your ears,” the hunter said.
“Yes,” Lee Han replied.
Lee Han put cotton in his ears like he was told. The nameless hunter nodded and said quietly,
“Lord of the mountains, I offer you my oath.”
Lee Han was surprised to feel magic coming from the nameless hunter and asked, “You’re a wizard?!”
The hunter read his lips and shook his head.
“Traditional blessing,” the hunter explained.
The nameless hunters got their power from the many traditions and superstitions they followed.
The more carefully they followed these traditions, the stronger they became when hunting.
Lee Han thought, ‘Simple magic!’
Lee Han understood how it worked when he heard the explanation.
Like some people in the Empire were born with magic even if they weren’t wizards, these hunters were the same.
If you had to name it, it was like magic from gods.
Lee Han thought, ‘Amazing. Such powerful magic without formal training.’
The nameless hunter held his spear tightly and waited quietly.
How much time had passed?
The Wailing Boar appeared, making the ground shake as it ran. As soon as it saw the nameless hunter, it ran at him, trying to stab him with its teeth.
*Pop!*
The nameless hunter used his magic to move quickly and dodge the attack. Instead, his spear cut a deep wound in the Wailing Boar’s side.
The Wailing Boar looked at the nameless hunter with angry eyes.
-■■■■■!
The first scream came out. Luckily, neither Lee Han nor the nameless hunter was hurt much.
The Wailing Boar was even angrier now. It charged at the hunter again. But the hunter was quick. He jumped out of the way and used his spear.
The Wailing Boar made a noise, trying to breathe. It knew it couldn’t just use strength to beat the fast human.
-■■■■■…
Another scream sounded.
This time, the scream wasn’t an attack. The nameless hunter realized with horror that the Wailing Boar was calling other monsters.
Wailing Boars weren’t supposed to do this!
“We have to get out of here!” the hunter said.
“Understood!” Lee Han replied.
Lee Han came out from behind and quickly started casting spells.
“Gather, rotate!”
The spells he had ready hit the Wailing Boar directly.
Water Bullets could break bones and hurt the insides of even a strong monster like the Wailing Boar.
*Thud!*
The Wailing Boar was knocked to the side by the strong hit.
The Wailing Boar was very angry. It stood up, wanting to tear apart the rude wizard who dared to attack it.
But a wizard who was ready was much stronger than a monster.
“Darkness, take over!”
A wave of darkness quickly weakened the Wailing Boar, making it slow.
“Frost, become arrows and be launched!”
Then, twelve ice arrows hit the Wailing Boar. Even if they didn’t go through its thick skin, they were enough to freeze the hurt monster.
“Strike!”
Dark skeleton warriors appeared and threw spears at the Wailing Boar.
Lee Han saw that the monster couldn’t move well anymore. He got ready to use another Water Bullet.
A water bullet, spinning even faster than before, flew through the air and hit the Wailing Boar’s weak spots.
*Wham!*
The nameless hunter watched in amazement as Lee Han beat the Wailing Boar with lots of magic, then finished it off with a final hit.
“Well, amazing! Now I see where the reputation of Einroguard students comes from!” the hunter said.
Lee Han didn’t have time to fix the hunter’s wrong ideas about Einroguard students.
“Shouldn’t we find out where the others are coming from?” Lee Han asked.
“Don’t take out the cotton. They’re counting on it!” The nameless hunter said sternly.
If he took out the cotton to hear the other Wailing Boars coming, they would happily scream their dangerous scream.
But Lee Han quickly took out the cotton for a moment. Then, like the hunter had done, he put his ear to the ground, listening carefully.
“They’re coming from over there!” Lee Han said.
-■■■■■■!
The Wailing Boars screamed.
It was a terrible cry, promising to kill everything nearby except themselves.
The nameless hunter closed his eyes without meaning to.
He didn’t want to see what would happen to the young wizard because of his mistake.
“Let’s go!” Lee Han said.
“…?!”
Lee Han was fine.
The nameless hunter looked like he’d seen a ghost and moved with Lee Han.
“What you did just now was truly remarkable. But the wail…?”
“I knew you were strong, so I thought you could handle the loud cries.”
“The students at Einroguard are truly amazing!”
“Oh, no. This is just me.”
Ethan quickly explained, worried the hunter might misunderstand.
“That’s right. I don’t think any other students have tamed both a griffin and a basilisk.”
“…”
Ethan looked confused. The nameless hunter chuckled.
“Don’t look at me like that. I understand now that wizards aren’t all evil. If a wizard was really the king of monsters, would he have fought the Wailing Abomination to help me?”
“I knew you’d believe me!”
Ethan’s face lit up now that his companion finally trusted him.
Sincerity can move anyone; real feelings always get through. Even the stubborn hunter was starting to understand Ethan.
“Hey! You poachers! I told you not to come any closer! Do you want the unicorn to eat your friend?”
Both of them turned, surprised.
While running from the Wailing Abomination, they had accidentally come close to where Professor Bendozol was!
“I’ll send a signal,” Ethan said.
“Then I’ll threaten the professor,” the hunter replied.
“Right… hmm?”
The nameless hunter couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
Had he heard correctly?
“Just try feeding Gainando to the unicorn, Professor! I’ll report you to the Headmaster right away! You know he’ll chew the unicorn alive!”
“You little pest! May your socks always be wet and your tea always cold!”
Ethan’s threat hit a nerve, and Professor Bendozol cursed him.
Still, not wanting to be beaten by a student, Bendozol shouted,
“Gonadaltez won’t know what’s happening here!” Gonadaltez was the Headmaster of Einroguard, and Bendozol didn’t want him to find out.
“One of my friends has already gone to send a message to Einroguard. Just try and keep it up!”
“May you be hated by everything, from ponies to donkeys, you good-for-nothing!”
“…”
The nameless hunter looked at Ethan, a little less friendly than before.
But Ethan was too busy dealing with Professor Bendozol to notice.
“Professor, we know there’s something wrong with the unicorn!”
“You spying poachers! Did Lightningfoot tell you?”
“Let us help! Aren’t we wizards from Einroguard too?”
“Ha! If you’re a wizard from Einroguard, I should be even more suspicious. What year are you in?”
“…”
Ethan almost agreed with him and nearly lost the argument.
“I don’t trust poachers! I’ll protect the unicorn. Get lost!”
“This boy is loved by monsters more than you are, Bendozol!”
The nameless hunter stepped in, unable to watch any longer.
That arrogant comment really hurt Professor Bendozol’s pride, and he started cursing even more.
“-Go to hell#! $@^%Donkey#$son of a#%!”
“…What kind of curse is that?”
“No need to understand it!”
After cursing, Professor Bendozol seemed to calm down and spoke normally.
“What fool thinks a young poacher is better than me! Do you know what monsters I’ve tamed? I’ve cared for everything from the Empire’s smallest fairy to the Empire’s largest dragon!”
“You’ve only cared for them. You’ll never be truly loved by a monster!”
“Oh, no. It’s not like I’m really loved either…”
Ethan was a little embarrassed.
Anyone listening would think the griffin and basilisk loved Ethan.
Just then, PhoneLeash, the baby basilisk inside his sleeve, got angry and hit him with its tail.
Never mind the griffin, how dare he ignore its love!
“This boy has tamed a griffin and is loved by a basilisk. Can you say the same?”
“Don’t say things that even a mule wouldn’t believe! If you’ve tamed a griffin and are loved by a basilisk, I swear I’ll crawl on all fours to greet you! I swear on the name of the unicorn!”
Professor Bendozol’s face was red with anger as he knelt on the ground, dust sticking to his robes. He glared at the students, his eyes like small, angry stones.
Nilia, unable to watch any longer, spoke to Professor Lightningfoot.
“Professor, shouldn’t we let him get up…?”
“No, let him stay down a bit longer. That position is good for the back. He took a few hits earlier, so he needs to be in a position that’s good for his back.”
“…”
The students stared at Professor Bendozol crawling on all fours with mixed feelings.
Every student at Einroguard wanted to make a professor kneel, but seeing a professor crawling on all fours was a bit…
“So, Professor Bendozol, what’s wrong with the unicorn?”
“I met her a few years ago. It was a drizzly day, and a crescent moon hung in the sky. I saw the air shimmering and knew I was about to meet one of the most beautiful creatures…”
“We’re not interested, just get to the point, Professor Bendozol.”
Professor Bendozol grumbled and muttered curses before finally speaking.
“The unicorn is taking care of her baby while still hurt.”
Professor Lightningfoot was surprised.
The fact that the unicorn was hurt was surprising, and the fact that she was caring for a baby was equally amazing. Both were very rare.
“I see why she was going crazy!”
“So, will you be leaving now?”
Professor Lightningfoot stopped himself from kicking Professor Bendozol. It wouldn’t be a good example for the students.
Bendozol glared at Ethan and growled.
“You cunning swindler.”
“…Professor, the bet wasn’t my idea, it was that hunter’s…”
“Hmph!”
Professor Bendozol turned his head away as if he didn’t want to listen.
Just then, PhoneLeash swung its long tail and smacked the professor in the face.
“PhoneLeash!”
“Th… th…”
Professor Bendozol trembled, and Ethan started to apologize.
“Professor, I’ll apologize for him…”
“So much energy! Good boy!”
“……”
“Swing it again! Haha.”
PhoneLeash pulled back, scared by the human wizard’s craziness.
