143. The Immortal
The moment the huge dump truck was about to crush his motorcycle.
Hae-soo gritted his teeth, lowered his body, and twisted the accelerator even harder.
Vroom!
The motorcycle shot forward like a bullet, narrowly escaping the collision with the dump truck. Still, about 20 centimeters of its rear end was grazed.
Thud- Screech-!
It was just a graze, but Hae-soo’s motorcycle spun due to the dump truck’s speed. Hae-soo quickly planted a foot on the ground to regain his balance.
Thud-
The motorcycle stopped after spinning twice.
Hae-soo, now stable, watched the dump truck speed away. He revved the engine again.
Vroom!!
About 100 meters later…
Screech
The dump truck driver, whether he noticed Hae-soo or by chance, finally slammed on the brakes and stopped.
Hae-soo stopped his motorcycle and approached the driver’s seat.
“Open the door before I break it.”
-Ugh, uh, uh? What?
Garbled words came from inside.
Hae-soo immediately stepped on the footrest, climbed up, and punched the window.
Bang! Shatter, crash!!
“Ugh!!”
Hae-soo reached through the broken window, unlocked the door, grabbed the driver by the collar, and dragged him out.
“Huergh…”
A strong smell of alcohol wafted out. The driver’s face was flushed, and his eyes were glazed over.
Hae-soo brought his face close to him and asked.
“What are you?”
“Hey, what are you doing, you son of a—?! Why aren’t you letting go?!”
Hae-soo gripped his collar tightly and stared at him. Overwhelmed by Hae-soo’s imposing aura, his struggles subsided.
‘Typical drunk driver behavior, but…’
The timing of the attempted hit, the excessive speed on this road, and the sudden stop after trying to pass… something felt off. Detective Park’s death flashed through his mind.
‘Is it starting already?’
Hae-soo looked at him and picked up his phone.
“Yes, there’s been an accident here. The location is…”
The traffic police were dispatched, and Hae-soo took him to the Gangjin Police Station.
“…I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I did wrong! I was sad, so I drank a little.”
Even in handcuffs, the driver continued to ramble, drunk.
“I’ll talk to this guy.”
“Yes? You’ll handle it directly, Detective…? Yes, I understand.”
Hae-soo got permission from the traffic police, grabbed him by the collar, and headed to the restroom.
Bang!
He shoved him into a toilet stall, slammed the door shut, and leaned in close.
“Are you one of the Company’s guys?”
“Huh? Company? I don’t work for a company. I’m a freelancer, a freelancer.”
Hae-soo stared intently into his eyes.
‘He’s not one of the Company’s guys.’
It was clear he was hired to kill, but his ears were fine (indicating no communication implants), and there were no calluses on his hands, meaning he hadn’t trained in combat. He lacked the sharp energy unique to those from the Company. He was just a civilian.
Hae-soo grabbed his ear, leaned in close, and whispered.
“This is your last chance. Tell me who hired you and how. If you go out like this, you’ll die.”
For a split second, his face hardened. But then he reverted to his silly, glazed-over expression and stuck out his tongue.
“Huh? Is the police threatening to kill an innocent citizen right now? People of the town!! The police are threatening a citizen here!!”
Two other police officers, who had been standing guard, immediately rushed in at his shout. Hae-soo opened his mouth, keeping his gaze fixed on the man until he was pulled away.
“You made your choice. Go.”
Hae-soo got his phone number, address, company information, and even confirmed his residence.
Only his ankle was a little sore, and the motorcycle was slightly scratched, so he decided to settle for the motorcycle repair fee later.
Of course, even if Hae-soo had reached an amicable agreement, driving under the influence to the point of license revocation was a clear violation of the law, so he would face license revocation and a fine.
Step, step, step.
The man walked about 200 meters from the police station and hailed a taxi.
As soon as he got in, his glazed eyes cleared.
He took out an old 2G phone [a type of older mobile phone] and called the only number in his contacts.
“…It’s me. That bastard’s athletic ability is something else… Anyway, I failed. Just take the down payment—”
-Understood. Farewell.
Click.
The man looked at the phone as soon as the call was cut off and muttered.
“This bastard doesn’t even let me finish talking, his tone is so annoying… Huh?”
He grumbled and looked up, but the surrounding scenery was unfamiliar. He looked around and said to the taxi driver.
“Hey, where are we? This isn’t the way to my house! Are you trying to scam a local? Stop the car, stop!”
“……”
When the man kicked the backrest roughly, the taxi driver turned the steering wheel and parked on the shoulder without answering.
As the man leaned forward to grab the taxi driver’s collar, the taxi driver turned to face him.
“What the—”
Sting-
His neck felt a prick as if he had been injected, and soon it became hot.
Splat, hiss-
The sound of a water gun being fired was heard, and all the strength drained from his body. The man covered his neck with one hand and mouthed.
“You….”
His vision blurred, and he couldn’t see the taxi driver’s face clearly, but he saw one thing for sure.
That one corner of his mouth was raised in a smirk.
Swoosh-
The taxi driver’s hands gently grabbed the man’s head.
Crack-
With a chilling sound, the man’s consciousness was cut off.

On the way back home after stopping by the police station.
Shin Hae-soo took the resident-only elevator.
-The doors are closing. Going up.
Whoosh- Thud
After ascending for a while, the elevator suddenly stopped when it was almost at its destination.
Tap tap
“Hello. The elevator has stopped. Hello.”
He pressed the security call button, but there was no response.
Hae-soo called 119 [the emergency services number in South Korea] on his phone to report it, and grabbed the armrests in the corner of the folding area and started doing parallel bar dips.
“Hoo, hoo.”
It was when he was passing thirty and his triceps were starting to feel it.
Thud!
The elevator shook violently. The dump truck incident flashed through Hae-soo’s mind.
He narrowed his brows and opened the ceiling of the elevator and climbed up.
Boom!
In the meantime, another belt snapped, and the elevator moved slightly downward.
Looking up, he saw a person wearing a black mask. When he made eye contact with Hae-soo, he stopped what he was doing and disappeared.
Hae-soo forcibly opened the elevator door and escaped. He was on the 8th floor, and when he quickly ran up the stairs, he saw various pieces of equipment on the 10th floor.
No one was visible inside the open elevator shaft. Hae-soo immediately went up the last stairs and roughly opened the rooftop door.
Bang!

Team Leader Ban.
He didn’t know how many people he had to cut down to become a team leader in the Company.
Assistant Manager, Manager, Employee—they were all the same there. True to the nickname ‘wasp,’ they were disposable, used and abandoned without warning.
However, it was different for team leader level and above. He was formally admitted to the Company, learned about its operations, and became involved in its future.
And, the more he knew, the greater his ambition grew.
He felt like he could control Korea, and he keenly felt that he was getting closer to that absolute power.
However, that frustrating Manager Ma, like a gatekeeper, was always blocking his path to success.
‘That damn regulation, regulation, that shitty regulation that only allows him to stick right next to Teacher Cheon! I’ll show Teacher Cheon properly this time. I’ll prove that there is someone more useful than you.’
Of course, Team Leader Ban planned everything thoroughly, taking extreme care not to be noticed by the Company, as Shin Hae-soo was a person of interest.
He had plans not only for Plan 2 but up to the 3rd plan. He decided to take the lead himself from the 2nd plan onwards to eliminate even the slightest variable.
Plan 1.
He didn’t expect much, but using a dump truck to make “jerky” out of him failed.
‘Not bad, is it because he’s a person of interest?’
The second plan was to stop the elevator and cut all the belts to cause a fatal fall.
But.
‘Crazy, why is he so quick-witted? Did we just make eye contact? This won’t do.’
It became difficult to make it look like an accident.
However, Team Leader Ban had a strange look on his face as he hurried his steps. He thought Hae-soo would run away and report it, but listening to the sounds, he was coming up.
‘Stupid bastard, he’s walking to his death.’
He seemed confident because he caught a few wasps. It was different from what he expected, but it was going according to plan. The last plan could not fail.
Swish-
Team Leader Ban went to the rooftop, climbed onto the eaves that blocked the rain, and took out the wire.
Bang!
Shin Hae-soo appeared as the door was roughly opened. Excited and defenseless.
‘He’s in good shape and beat a few skilled wasps, so he must be full of confidence, but there are stronger people in the world than you think, kid. Feel it properly for the first and last time today.’
When Hae-soo took a few steps forward and looked around, when the position was just right, Team Leader Ban jumped down, grabbing his back, while putting the wire around Hae-soo’s neck.
Crack-
‘Huh?’
He had strangled dozens of times, so he knew just by the subtle feeling. His neck was not properly strangled.
Looking closely, he saw that Hae-soo’s two thumbs were stuck between the wires.
‘That’s all you’ve got…!’
Team Leader Ban put his knee on his back and pulled the wire even harder. This situation was also perfect.
There was no way he could win against the force of pulling with both hands wearing gloves, wrapped around several times, and with his knees on his back as a support, with just two thumbs inserted and his elbows completely bent.
Surely, that’s how it should be.
Whirr-
“Ugh-”
Team Leader Ban unknowingly groaned. He felt an irresistible force, like a machine pulling in a net from a ship.
Team Leader Ban was sucked in, hugging Hae-soo’s neck with both arms.
‘Oh, this isn’t—’
Thwack!!
“Cough!”
As Hae-soo took a step back, his back hit the wall next to the rooftop door. The impact was like being in a traffic accident with a 1.5-ton truck.
Team Leader Ban was desperately holding onto the wire, unable to breathe. Now, this line felt like his lifeline.
He instinctively felt from his experience of crossing the line of death dozens of times. If he lets go of this, he will die.
Bang!
“Cough!!”
When his stomach became hot from the shock of his insides twisting once again.
Whoosh-
The world spun around.
Thwack!!
Hae-soo grabbed the wire, turned around, and slammed him down.
“Cough!”
Team Leader Ban spat out blood while being slammed onto the cement floor. The wire he had been holding onto like a lifeline had already lost its strength and was lying on the floor.
He was convinced as he looked at Hae-soo, who was approaching like a beast.
‘He didn’t leave me alone… he couldn’t touch me.’
Swish-
He grabbed Team Leader Ban by the collar with one hand and shook him back and forth, slamming him into the wall.
Team Leader Ban suddenly felt a surge of injustice.
Bang!
‘What the hell—’
Bang!
‘How is it that he avoids it even when I try to run him over with a dump truck?’
Bang!
‘He even climbs up the elevator and opens the elevator door like it’s a vinyl door.’
Bang!
‘What kind of superhuman strength and reflexes is this? Is he immortal? Can such a monster exist in the world besides Manager Ma—’
Thwack!!
“Cough, cough, st, stop.”
Shin Hae-soo made eye contact with Team Leader Ban and asked.
“What are you?”
Team Leader Ban stared at him blankly with half-glazed eyes, then opened his mouth wide and stuck out his tongue. And just before he bit his tongue.
Bang!!
A fist as big as a pot lid flew in.
“It’s a bumper crop of corn today [meaning he’s getting a good beating].”
Bang bang bang Crack!!
