158. Fists Closer Than the Law
Kim Young-shik was startled. If anyone were to discover that this newbie, this gangster punk full of bluster and tattoos, was slipping him water, that person wouldn’t be safe either.
Just then, Soo whispered to Young-shik.
“Scream.”
“Huh?”
As soon as he finished speaking, Soo punched Young-shik’s palm with his fist. It wasn’t strong enough to break bones, but it was enough to elicit a scream.
“Kkyaaaak!!”
“Hey, hey! What are you doing!”
The guard turned on the fluorescent light and hurriedly stopped Soo. He had come by because he heard voices while heading to the restroom.
“Ah, hello! I was told I could torment him as long as he didn’t die…”
“Aish, this bastard is a complete devil. At least let him sleep, you punk. If he dies, your organs will be harvested, you know?”
“I’m sorry, sir.”
“Instead of tormenting this bastard, go train. You’re all brawn and no brains, a complete weakling.”
“Yes, sir.”
Soo bowed obsequiously to the senior guard and left the counseling room. Before leaving, he turned around at the door, made eye contact with Young-shik, and mouthed the words.
The lip movements were so accurate that Young-shik could read them.
‘Sorry. Just bear with it a little longer?’
He couldn’t understand why that tattooed guy, with whom he had no particular interaction, would say such a thing, why he would take the risk to get him water.
‘I misjudged him… He was a naturally kind person.’
Young-shik was an ordinary modern person who didn’t take the lead in doing good deeds but disliked harming others. He was in a life-or-death situation himself, but he hoped that this incompetent tattooed guy wouldn’t get into trouble trying to help him.
* * *
After a few days that felt like hell, Young-shik was gagged, his hands and feet tied with rope, and moved to the cargo hold of a truck.
Inside the cargo hold were people he had never seen before, or employees who had applied to leave after accumulating ten million won in points before Young-shik.
Drrr-clunk
“Hey, everyone, get out!”
“Hurry up and get out.”
His feet were tied, but he could move about half a step.
The guards, no, the gangsters, forcibly dragged them out. The smell of the sea hit him strongly, and there were many large containers around.
‘A port…’
The gangster leading the way opened a container and shoved people inside.
The closer he got, the more the unpleasant stench stung his nose.
A small light bulb was on inside, so he could see roughly. Blood and vomit were scattered on the floor, and there was a makeshift toilet in the corner.
Even Young-shik, who didn’t know much about this kind of thing, could quickly guess. It was human smuggling, something he had only seen in movies.
Young-shik felt it instinctively.
‘If I go in there, it’s over.’
Young-shik struggled, shaking off the gangster’s arm that was pushing his shoulder.
“Ugh, wooph!!”
However, trying to escape with his arms and legs tied and without any preparation was a foolish decision.
He tripped over his own feet and rolled on the floor.
“This bastard, do you want to die that early?”
Thud, thud!
The man who had been pushed away by Young-shik kicked him wildly.
Then, a man who seemed to be the leader raised his hand to stop him and pointed to Young-shik’s arm.
“Cut off one of his arms and cauterize it with a lighter.”
“Like that lawyer from before?”
“Oh, was he a lawyer? Well, then he won’t die.”
“Understood, team leader.”
The man smiled bitterly and took out a machete from the front seat of the truck. Then, he dragged Young-shik into the container.
“Uuuuuugh!”
“Stay still, or you’ll lose your head.”
Young-shik, feeling the fear of death for the first time, pissed himself as he backed away while sitting. Even that wasn’t easy.
The man held the machete and tilted his head, looking at Young-shik.
“So, to cut off an arm, I have to untie the rope first… and if you make a fuss, it’ll be annoying… so I should knock you out first, okay.”
He positioned himself to strike Young-shik’s head with the flat side of the machete.
At that moment, a thick hand emerged from the darkness behind the man.
The hand grabbed the man’s jaw and head and turned it sharply.
Snap- thud
The man didn’t even let out a single scream and fell to the floor, still holding the machete.
Thud
A familiar face appeared before Young-shik, who was in a state of panic and couldn’t figure out what had happened.
A hand untied the gag.
“Soo, Soo, Hyung-nim… [Hyung-nim is a Korean term used by males to address older male friends or brothers.]”
“I told you, just bear with it a little longer.”
Young-shik was out of immediate danger, but he was more uneasy than relieved. Right now, he had knocked the man down with a surprise attack, but there were many gangsters waiting outside. This tattooed guy, no, Soo Hyung-nim, would die trying to save him.
He had glimpsed him getting beaten up badly by the other guys during training. He was muscular but weak.
“Soo, Soo Hyung-nim… but we can’t do anything just by knocking down one person. What do we do…”
He silently cut the rope tying Young-shik’s arm with a box cutter, handed it to Young-shik, and said.
“My name is Shin Hae-soo. Young-shik.”
“Yes… Yes?”
He wanted to retort, asking why his name was so important in this situation. But he thought that it was like a soldier who sensed death asking his comrade to remember his name when going to the final battlefield, so he repeated his name.
‘Shin Hae-soo, Shin Hae-soo, Shin Hae-soo?’
Then suddenly, he realized it was a familiar name. Young-shik, who was a fan of actress Oh Se-yeon, remembered the name of the annoying person who was a regular citizen and a police officer who had his first scandal with her.
‘A, a police officer?’
His actions so far flashed through Young-shik’s mind like a panorama.
-Mr. Kim Young-shik? How long have you been here?
-You were caught by that woman too, right, Young-shik?
-When is free time here? Can we go anywhere?
His strange actions and questions came to mind. A small hope bloomed in Young-shik’s eyes as he looked at Soo, Shin Hae-soo’s broad back.
Squeak
He ignored the machete on the floor and opened the container door with his bare hands.
The moonlight shone in slightly. Hae-soo turned his head halfway and opened his mouth.
“Stay here, it’ll be over soon.”
* * *
Thwack
Shin Hae-soo closed the container door and even locked it.
“What, when did you get in there?”
“Just now.”
“Oh, is that so? Huh? This bastard is suddenly talking informally…”
The man tried to scold Hae-soo, but he was already far away.
Hae-soo passed the gangsters scattered here and there and approached Boss Yang.
Boss Yang was eating sashimi with another man at a makeshift table set up in front of the ship.
As he strode towards him, the man guarding him tried to stop Hae-soo.
“Hey, hey, newbie? What is it?”
Hae-soo silently shook off his hand, approached Boss Yang, and asked.
“Boss Yang, are these people headquarters employees?”
“Huh? Oh, yeah, they are, but what are you all of a sudden? Hey, guys, what’s with this bastard?”
“Ah, I’m…”
Hae-soo turned around and looked at the sky.
Peeoooong-
At that timing, a small firework crossed the night sky, a signal flare.
Because it was a long-term infiltration under constant surveillance, there was no transceiver, and he only had a pressure-activated GPS device installed in the sole of his shoe, which had been very useful one day, so he didn’t know what was going on.
Hae-soo had simply infiltrated and lived, trusting only the Special Task Force.
That firework was a signal flare that the Special Task Force had accurately located Hae-soo and was deploying the riot police.
If the riot police, armed with riot gear and batons, and one-handed riot shields, came, they would be subdued quickly, so he had to move now to defeat them before that.
“I came to catch you guys.”
Crack-
Hae-soo immediately grabbed Boss Yang’s arm, twisted it behind his back, and stood him up.
“Aaaagh!!”
The surrounding gangsters laughed in disbelief at the sudden action.
The gangsters from headquarters took a step back and watched them.
“Are you crazy?”
“This bastard is dying to die.”
Thinking of Hae-soo, the weakling who couldn’t even compete with them during training, they reached out their hands.
In response, Hae-soo punched the men who were rushing at him with Boss Yang’s arm twisted behind his back with one hand.
Thwack! Thwack!
Two men who were rushing in clumsily had their noses crushed by Hae-soo’s fist and sat down on the spot.
Only then did the other men take out the sashimi knives and hand axes they had been hiding in their arms.
Even in the increasingly ominous atmosphere, Hae-soo looked around at the headquarters employees sitting quietly as if watching a fire in the neighborhood, and made eye contact with their leader.
“You guys take them out too, so I can beat you to my heart’s content.”
Crack!
“Kkeuaaaaaak!!”
Hae-soo completely twisted Boss Yang’s arm while fixing his gaze on the headquarters leader and pushed him towards another man.
Boss Yang was originally not a gangster but a scammer who was recognized as a voice phishing expert and rose to that position.
Still, because he was in a high position, he took out a folding knife from his pocket and rushed at Hae-soo, not wanting to show an unsightly appearance in front of his subordinates.
“Die, you bastard!”
Chin Crack
“Keheok!!”
Hae-soo lightly grabbed and twisted his wrist along with the knife, and punched his side shortly.
Snap-
“Keureureuk-”
Boss Yang dropped the knife, grabbed his side, staggered back, and fell. Blood foam was coming out of his mouth, probably because he had been hit in the vital spot.
In the meantime, another man stretched out a sashimi knife towards Hae-soo’s side.
Clack!
Hae-soo knocked out his hand holding the sashimi knife with his left hand at the exact timing, and struck his chin with his right hand.
Thwack!
The man’s jaw turned 130 degrees, and he rolled his eyes and fell on the spot.
At that time, a man with no learning ability took a hand axe and struck Hae-soo’s shoulder.
Hae-soo grabbed his wrist holding the hand axe, grabbed his collar with one hand, turned around, and slammed him over his shoulder.
Crash Chang!!
The table where Boss Yang and the headquarters employee leader were sitting was completely smashed. Only then did the leader, who had quickly retreated behind, narrow his brows and say something to his subordinates.
“That fearless bastard, cut off his head.”
The accent is not a native Korean. He is Chinese or Korean-Chinese.
As two of his subordinates put their hands into their pockets, Hae-soo quickly approached and punched them shortly.
Peobeok-
The men on both sides of the leader fell limply as if they had been hit by a tranquilizer gun without being able to do anything.
“Huh?”
Thud
The leader did not understand what was happening and was caught by Hae-soo by the collar in a daze.
The leader tried to shake off his hand, but he did not budge as if he had been caught by an irresistible mechanical force.
Whoosh-
His body flew into the sky. And quickly fell to the ground.
Koong!!
The leader, whose back was properly planted on the asphalt floor, momentarily lost his vision, felt the blood flowing backwards, and his head spun and his breath stopped.
It was only about 1-2 seconds, but it was like an eternity to him, who felt that this was dying.
When his vision recovered belatedly, Shin Hae-soo, a scary-looking man who looked much more like a gangster than a gangster, looked down at him and opened his mouth.
“Do you know what my favorite saying is?”
Hae-soo continued, raising his fist as big as a pot lid.
“Fists are closer than the law.”
Thwack!!
* * *
It took less than a minute for the Chungnam branch manager, Boss Yang, and the Shanghai branch manager dispatched from headquarters to be defeated by Hae-soo.
The brains of the gangsters who were watching the newbie making a fuss from afar for fun did not even include the fact that two heads would be defeated in the variables.
So their actions were slow, and only then did dozens of gangsters take out their weapons and start rushing towards Hae-soo.
At that time.
“Assault team!!”
A familiar, welcome, and pathetic voice echoed.
“Sweep them away!!!”
“Uaaaaaak!!”
“Aaaagh!”
“Waaaaaaa!!”
Unlike usual, about a hundred riot police officers, fully armed with riot gear [protective gear used by police during civil unrest], burst out with a roar that seemed to tear the sky.
They covered the gangsters like an angry wave.
