Police Too Strong – Episode 91 (91/255)
The Commissioner General of Police was about to walk past the swimming pool, pretending not to notice anything, when the woman who had been dunking her team member suddenly looked up.
“Oh, Dad!”
Her voice was cheerful, a stark contrast to her actions. The Commissioner General spun around, changing stances with Udyr-like speed [referencing a character known for quick stance changes in the game League of Legends].
“Oh? Oh, my little girl, you’re here? Were you swimming?”
“No, this jerk kept saying I didn’t need to wear a swimsuit because I’m small, and that it would be a hindrance if it was dangling. He doesn’t even know how much I’m packing! Hey, you! Do you know how big I am when I let it all out? Anyway, what are you doing here, Dad?”
“I see. Bring him here. I need to give him a little talking to.”
The Commissioner General’s daughter released her team member and approached him, asking,
“What are you doing here, Dad? Were you invited too?”
“No, I took my summer vacation to coincide with yours so I could see my little girl. It’s hard to see you because I’m so busy.”
“Dad, you really should have told me beforehand.”
She climbed out of the pool and clung to his arm, acting cute while still soaking wet.
Behind her, the team members who had been thrown into the pool were staring in disbelief at their team leader’s unexpected display of affection.
“Is that really our team leader?”
“I don’t think so.”
“Isn’t that the Chungnam Commissioner General? Did he know the team leader is his daughter?”
“I don’t think he did.”
“Even so, the team leader’s cuteness is truly amazing.”
“Cute? Snap out of it, you idiot! You just got a spinning back kick from the team leader!”
“Occupational hazard… cough, cough.”
The other team members pushed him back into the water and covered his mouth.
The Commissioner General, as if only now realizing it was his daughter, turned around and introduced her to the Special Crime Squad.
“Oh, uh, my little girl, she’s not with the Special Crime Squad, but she is Team Leader Jo Ara from Violent Crimes Unit 1 of the Gyeonggi Northern Police Station.”
“Unit 1.”
“I know, I know, just kidding. Unit 1, my little girl. This is the Chungnam Special Crime Squad.”
“Hello.”
In a word, she resembled a squirrel. She had chubby cheeks and large, round eyes, giving her a cute appearance, but her gaze was sharp like a detective. It was an odd combination—unbalanced, but that’s what gave her a subtle charm.
“I didn’t know the Commissioner General had such a wonderful daughter. It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’m Kwak Su-cheol, team leader of the Special Crime Squad.”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you too. I’m Jo Ara, team leader of Violent Crimes Unit 1 at the Gyeonggi Northern Police Station.”
The Commissioner General stepped forward, personally pointing to and introducing Shin Hae-soo.
“This is Officer Shin Hae-soo, who was hitting on my little girl.”
“Dad, I told you I’m not interested in men… but, he does look sturdy.”
At the Commissioner General’s pointed introduction, her team members, who had come out of the pool, crowded around her.
“Who dared to hit on Team Leader Jo, the idol of the Northern Police Station?!
“Who is it! Show yourself!”
“Seriously, shut your mouths, you guys. Hyung [older brother/male friend, term of endearment], shut them up, it’s embarrassing.”
She was a rare female team leader in the Violent Crimes Unit, young and cute, and even had a laid-back personality, calling them ‘hyung,’ so the atmosphere in the Violent Crimes Unit was one of fondness and care for their team leader.
“What a unique team.”
“Indeed, they seem to get along well. Our guys leave the team leader out in the open.”
The Commissioner General chuckled and pulled the team members away from Team Leader Jo. After exchanging a few words, they parted ways with the Violent Crimes Unit, and that evening, they attended a lecture by a profiler and criminal psychology professor in the hotel’s small auditorium.
Oh Geng, who was supposedly listening intently, was dozing off with the youngest member, heads together.
“Hyung-nim [respectful term for older brother/male friend], it’s over.”
“Snore, uh, uh, yeah, good lecture.”
While waiting for the other detectives to leave because the aisle was narrow.
“Damn it.”
Oh Geng suddenly spotted someone, turned his head, and covered his face. Despite his efforts, a man approached and greeted him familiarly.
“Oh Gang-seok?”
Oh Geng casually stretched and faced him.
“Oh, hey, Young-joon.”
“What are you doing here? How’s Mi-young doing?”
“Oh, you know.”
The man turned around and explained to his group.
“He’s my college classmate. Surprisingly, he ended up with the campus queen and got married. All the classmates were really envious… Where is she?”
“Haha, I’m with the Chungnam Special Crime Squad.”
“Ah… I heard Chungnam just created one recently. Team leader?”
“Team member.”
“Ah, I see. You’re still amazing. Still working in the field. Take it easy. If you get hurt in the field at our age, your bones won’t heal well. Then Mi-young will be the one suffering, not you.”
“Yeah.”
“I’m with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency. Contact me if you have any difficulties.”
He handed over his business card.
[Kim Young-joon, Team Leader, Life Safety Division, Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency]
“Alright, go on.”
“Oh, well, haha, see ya.”
He patted Oh Geng’s shoulder as if to comfort him and walked away. Hae-soo and the youngest member glared at him from behind Oh Geng as if they wanted to kill him.
“Who is that orangutan?”
“He’s balding too.”
Oh Geng also sighed softly as he watched the man’s back and explained.
“Oh, he’s a college classmate from the same police administration department. We studied together, but he became an officer, and I gave up and took the patrol officer exam the following year. He’s still annoying.”
“Oh Geng-hyung looks scarier.”
“I think that’s a compliment, but it strangely makes me feel bad.”
The team leader patted Oh Geng’s shoulder like the man had done and said,
“Oh Geng-ah [term of endearment], hang in there. I’ll give you more vacation if your bones don’t heal. You’re made for the field.”
“Damn it, should I really quit?”
Oh Geng returned to the lodging with a bitter expression.
At the lodging, they soothed their bitterness with cup noodles, instant rice, and kimchi, and everyone lazed around, enjoying the rare moment of leisure.
Then, Oh Geng, who was lounging on the sofa, said,
“There’s a billiard hall downstairs. Want to go?”
“Billiards, you say?”
“Billiards is important for investigations too. You need to see the angles well, don’t you think?”
At Oh Geng’s words, the team leader, who was watching TV with his eyes closed, nodded vaguely.
“Yeah, yeah, that’s right.”
“Let’s go!”
The Special Crime Squad team members went to the billiard hall and took a corner seat.
“You hold it like this. Can’t you do it?”
“My arm doesn’t bend at that angle.”
“Huh? Really? Hey, stop working out so much! How can you not bend it? Can you function in daily life?”
“It’s a bit difficult wiping my butt.”
Hae-soo glanced at Oh Geng teaching the youngest member at an empty billiard table and adjusted his posture.
Tock, tock, beep-
He was hitting the chalk with the cue stick and missed. Oh Geng, who didn’t miss that, sighed softly.
“Did I 괜히 [unnecessarily] suggest playing billiards? When am I going to teach these guys? Can we even play today?”
Even at Oh Geng’s words, the team leader didn’t respond. He just lay on the long chair, seemingly uninterested in billiards, and watched TV.
At that moment, the billiard hall door opened, and a group with pale faces entered. It was Kim Young-joon and the Seoul Metropolitan Police officers.
“Oh, what’s this? Isn’t that Gang-seok? Can violent crimes detectives even play billiards? Aren’t they only good at hitting criminals?”
“We’re learning this time.”
“Oh, yeah, good, learning is good. Yeah, learn hard. Look at that form, you’re going to break the cue stick.”
Young-joon sneered, looking at the youngest member. The people behind him chuckled at his words.
Oh Geng put down the cue stick and looked at the group. A vein was bulging on his forehead.
“Young-joon.”
“What?”
“You know, you’ve been annoying since college. Do you have anyone with a deep relationship around you?”
“What, you wanna fight?”
“You don’t, do you? Even the colleagues behind you are chuckling along on the surface, but they’ll be badmouthing you as soon as you turn around.”
At Oh Geng’s words, Young-joon turned his head to look at his colleagues. They avoided his gaze.
“What did you say? Are you out of your mind?”
“Don’t stick your head out. Like you said, we’re violent crimes detectives. We’re good at hitting, good at hitting criminals’ mouths, and good at tearing apart the mouths of annoying guys too.”
Young-joon glanced at the two burly figures behind Oh Geng and couldn’t bring himself to attack, so he put his hand on his waist and raised his chin.
“Ha, really, is this guy crazy? Some low-ranking nobody…”
“You can’t bring yourself to attack, and you’re just running your mouth. Forget it, how about we play a game of billiards for a bet?”
“A bet in this situation? Ha, spit it out, what kind of bet?”
“If we win, you quit being a police officer. Don’t accept if you’re scared.”
“What? Oh, yeah, yeah! Damn it, if I lose, I’ll quit being a police officer! But, if I win, you divorce Mi-young, so I can hit on her, got it?”
Before he could even finish speaking, someone brushed past Oh Geng and went forward.
Whack!
It was Hae-soo. He grabbed Young-joon by the collar with one hand, pushed him all the way to the end of the wall, and slowly lifted him up. Young-joon couldn’t breathe properly from the overwhelming aura he was feeling for the first time.
“Cough, cough, cough.”
“It’s okay to tear someone to shreds if they mess with a detective’s family. Say it again.”
“Ah, no, cough…”
At that moment, Oh Geng approached and tapped Hae-soo on the shoulder.
“Let him go. Yeah, let’s do that. You’re quitting being a police officer, so we have to bet that much. You’re resigning, I’m divorcing, but if we don’t keep our promise, it’s okay to get beaten to death without any responsibility.”
“Cough, cough, just like a violent crimes detective, so ignorant… Fine, no take-backs.”
An absurd bet that could bring shame to the police if it leaked outside was made.
It was 2 vs 2, and the game was three-cushion billiards. Oh Geng won the rock-paper-scissors game and went first.
The stakes weren’t just ten or twenty thousand won; they were things that could shake up their lives. Oh Geng’s arm, holding the cue stick, was tense.
Beep-
“Pfft.”
“Puh-ha.”
Oh Geng’s cue tip hit the ball at an angle. It was a mistake from the start. Laughter erupted.
“Tsk, tsk, as expected, he’s just full of bluster and lacks brains. That’s why he’s still suffering in the field like that.”
Oh Geng silently listened, perhaps because of his own actions.
Now it was Young-joon’s turn. He had quite good skills, as confident as he had been. He scored 3 points on his first shot.
“Too bad, I was going to crush him right away.”
Next was the Special Crime Squad’s team leader. He was sitting and dozing off. Hae-soo was worried at the sight and said he would play, but Oh Geng strongly dissuaded him.
“Hyung-nim, it’s your turn.”
“Snore, huh? Me? Oh, yeah.”
The team leader grabbed any cue stick and approached the ball, getting ready to shoot.
“Not that one, the yellow ball.”
“Puh.”
Young-joon thought that victory was as good as certain since he couldn’t even distinguish his own ball in a bet that could determine his life.
“Ah, sorry, sorry, I just have to hit this one.”
Moreover, the direction he was trying to hit was at a strange angle. Young-joon smirked.
The team leader moved the cue stick with a world-weary expression.
Thump-
At that moment, the cue tip hit the ball, and the sound rang out clearly. Experts sound different from the moment the cue touches the ball. Young-joon felt an ominous feeling for a moment.
Thump, thump, thump, thud.
It hit an empty cushion from the start, then went in a completely different direction than Young-joon had expected, hitting three cushions and hitting two balls. Moreover, the two balls slowly rolled and stuck close to each other.
Young-joon let out a silent scream and bit his lower lip.
‘This is a show of strength. He’s trying to kill our morale with a trick he’s practiced often. Even considering that, he’s quite a skilled player.’
Still, his teammate was better than Young-joon, so he was still relaxed.
But.
Thump, thump, thump, thud.
He didn’t put down the cue stick as if he had come to play alone. Young-joon and his teammate’s mouths gradually widened.
Hae-soo and the youngest member could also feel that he was an amazing player, even if they didn’t know how to play.
At the sight, Oh Geng chuckled and said,
“Why else would I bet my own wife? It’s because I’m sure, sure that we’ll never lose.”
“It’s you, it’s you! Last time with Seotda [Korean card game], and now billiards, is there anything Team Leader can’t do?”
The team leader, who had been listening with his ears open while playing billiards, straightened his back, picked his ear with his pinky finger, and answered nonchalantly.
“Investigating?”
