About two weeks earlier.
A man with a very pale face searched quickly through his desk.
His hands shook so much that he knocked things off his desk. He looked quickly in each drawer. Finally, he found what he wanted.
It was a small pill bottle without a label. He grabbed it, opened it, and quickly poured four or five pills into his mouth.
“Haa, haa.”
He breathed heavily.
Cold sweat poured down his body like rain, making his clothes wet and sticky. He tried to use the breathing exercises the doctor showed him, breathing in and out slowly, but it didn’t help.
He needed time for the medicine to work.
The man curled up into a small ball, trying to be as small as possible in the tiny room. It was a room so small, you might wonder if anyone could live there. He stared blankly out the window.
It was very quiet.
Outside, it was a dark night. Inside the room, you could only hear the man’s breathing, which was rough and uneven.
But inside his head, things were very different.
Even though no one was outside, he heard a loud, rough voice in his ears. It seemed to go on and on.
[Annoying? Annoying? Annoying?]
[Let’s go outside. There’s no reason for you to be like this. Let’s kill them all. Everyone who makes you suffer!]
[Let’s go! Let’s go! Let’s go!]
“Shut up, you sons of bitches!”
He squeezed his eyes shut.
His name was Jang Sun-ho.
People knew him more as the ‘Killer Demon’ than by his real name. He was known as the most violent Hunter in the Great Han Empire. He was an A-rank powerhouse who had a Legacy Ability.
He had a terrible secret that he couldn’t tell anyone.
People thought getting a Legacy was a great gift. But Jang Sun-ho said that the day he got the ‘memories of the Legacy’ was the day his life became a disaster. A Legacy is a special power from the past.
The Legacy Ability gave him great power.
He had been an ordinary man, but suddenly he had incredible strength. High-ranking officials in the government offered him wealth and fame, wanting him to work with them.
However, he didn’t accept any of their offers.
Or rather, he couldn’t accept them.
From the moment he got his new power, Jang Sun-ho began to see things that weren’t there and hear voices.
He had hallucinations and heard voices in his head.
His life became miserable. Show us *how* it was miserable. Describe him not sleeping, being angry at small things, etc.
He couldn’t sleep well, which made him angry all the time. He had been known as a righteous Hunter, but he started to act violently.
That was how he got the name ‘Killer Demon.’
He cut off the heads of people who made him angry. When he had killed more than ten people, everyone turned against him.
Beware of the Killer Demon.
It was a famous warning to the people.
He still secretly got help from doctors to try and become normal again. But then, suddenly, Jang Sun-ho started to become even more crazy.
Voices echoed endlessly from all directions.
He felt a burning need that he couldn’t stop. He also couldn’t think clearly because strange memories filled his mind.
He felt like he was losing his mind.
He truly wanted to die.
If he could become normal again, he would give up his A-rank power without a second thought.
[You can never go back.]
[Why do you think you have no responsibility? You enjoyed it too. You did those things because you wanted to.]
[Loathsome bastard. Disgusting bastard.]
He curled up even tighter.
He felt like he was falling into a dark hole in his mind.
One day, two days, three days, four days…
He didn’t know how much time had passed.
Usually, the medicine would have worked and his mind would have cleared. But no matter how much time passed, the voices of the demons didn’t leave Jang Sun-ho’s ears.
His mind slowly broke apart.
At first, he tried to stay human. But then a small question popped into his head: wouldn’t life be easier if he just gave up?
And what started as a small question quickly grew into a crack that took over his entire mind.
Finally, on the fifteenth day…
“Yes, let’s kill them all.”
Jang Sun-ho’s eyes gleamed with murderous intent.
He went out into the streets.
Incheon.
It was different than before.
Because of Roman Dmitriev, people felt safe again. They were laughing and chatting, enjoying their lives. The air was filled with the happy sounds of children laughing and people chatting in the market. Brightly colored stalls lined the streets. Jang Sun-ho staggered through the crowd.
He saw the people who had been smiling just moments before now trying to avoid him. Jang Sun-ho smiled sadly and covered his face with his hands.
“Heh heh, you fucking bastards.”
He felt it was unfair.
His childhood had been terrible.
It would have been better if monsters had killed his parents like other people. But his parents were alive and well, abusing him like he was trash.
The anger that had been building up inside him exploded when he got the ‘Legacy Ability.’
The thought of being able to live as he pleased made him enjoy being known as the Killer Demon.
It was a world of the survival of the fittest.
Power was everything.
Having so much power made him give up on being human.
[Kill.]
[Kill them all.]
[Those bastards don’t deserve to be happier than you.]
“Yes, you’re right.”
He raised his head.
The moment the man who had just avoided him looked away, Jang Sun-ho drew his sword and cut off the man’s head.
Flash!
Splatter!
Blood splashed everywhere.
It looked very strange.
In such a peaceful place, bright red blood suddenly splashed everywhere, like someone had thrown paint.
“Kyaa!”
“M-Murder!”
People screamed.
As soon as they saw the murder, everyone ran away. Jang Sun-ho chased after them as if he had been waiting for this moment.
He had no reason to hate them. But he felt a need that was burning him alive, and he had to do what the voices told him. He swung his sword without caring who he hit.
People died. After killing the person in front of him, he immediately found another target and brutally ended their life.
Thud.
“Krrr.”
He collapsed, foaming at the mouth with blood.
Of course, some people fought back.
Hunters appeared, but they couldn’t exchange more than a few blows with Jang Sun-ho before their heads were sent flying.
Flash!
Pat pat pat.
Blood-red rain fell.
He was soaked in it.
The bitter smell filled the air, and being in a place filled with blood and death strangely made him feel calm.
It felt familiar. The Legacy had clearly lived this kind of life.
The voices that had been tormenting him were silent, as if they were cheering him on. They only stopped when he killed people.
He didn’t care about the hallucinations anymore.
He couldn’t stop.
Like a train that had jumped off the tracks, Jang Sun-ho killed the people who stood in his way, one after another.
It was then.
“Stop!”
Kang Min-ho and the Guardians arrived.
The news spread quickly.
While Kang Min-ho was on his way, his subordinate told him who the killer was.
My name is Jang Sun-ho. I am 39 years old. I am an A-rank Hunter. People call me ‘Demon Slayer’. He has always been called Demon Slayer because he acts in a very extreme way. But recently, he has started killing people without caring who they are. We think his special power, the power he got from his family, which we didn’t know about before, comes from Dimitri. Someone who knows him told us Demon Slayer is using Dimitri’s fighting style, called the Asura Sword Style.
Someone asked, surprised, “…Dimitri’s successor? Are you sure?”
Demon Slayer. Just the name made people uneasy. He was a mystery to everyone.
Demon Slayer had made so many people suffer. People said he had enemies everywhere in the Great Han Empire.
But he could walk around without being attacked because he always had a reason for what he did.
He only used too much force when he thought he was right. And when the Great Disaster happened, he helped in his own way. Because of this, it was hard to punish him, even when he did bad things.
The Great Han Empire was now strong, thanks to people like Roman Dimitri. But even in the past, when it was called the Republic of Korea, an A-rank Hunter like Demon Slayer was very powerful and hard to control.
This was a big problem.
No matter why Demon Slayer wanted to kill, normal people could not stop him.
A short time later, they reached the place. It was a street, now empty and damaged.
Kang Min-ho, the leader, yelled to his team, “Attack Demon Slayer together! Don’t let him escape!”
“Yes, sir!” his team replied.
Kang Min-ho knew he and Demon Slayer were both A-rank Hunters. But he also knew Demon Slayer was stronger. Kang Min-ho decided to be careful and get ready for a tough fight.
The Guardians, Kang Min-ho’s team, moved quickly. They spread out around Demon Slayer, making sure he couldn’t run away.
At the same time, Kang Min-ho used his special fighting style, the Guardian Sect’s way of combat. He ran fast towards Demon Slayer.
*Flash!*
*Flash, flash, flash!* Light seemed to explode around them as magic power filled the air.
Demon Slayer turned, and his eyes, red with anger, locked onto Kang Min-ho. Kang Min-ho felt a chill. He tightened his grip on his sword and got ready to defend himself.
*Clang!*
*Clang, clang, clang, clang!* The sounds of swords hitting each other echoed loudly.
Demon Slayer was incredibly fast.
His sword moved like lightning, aiming right for Kang Min-ho’s head. Kang Min-ho barely managed to raise his sword in time, blocking the blow just inches from his face.
The force of the attack made Kang Min-ho stagger back. The Guardian Sect’s fighting style was all about defense, which helped him block.
But even with his defense skills, Demon Slayer’s attack was incredibly powerful. Kang Min-ho knew that most Hunters, even A-rank ones, would have trouble blocking that.
And Demon Slayer didn’t stop.
He attacked again and again, pushing forward like a wild animal, angry that his first attack was blocked.
“You will die! You will all die!” Demon Slayer screamed.
*Wham!*
*Wham, wham, wham, wham!* Each strike was like a hammer blow.
His attacks were full of hate and a desire to kill.
Every time he swung his sword, he aimed for Kang Min-ho’s weak points, trying to kill him quickly. Kang Min-ho could only focus on defending, blocking each attack as best he could.
Demon Slayer’s attacks were even stronger than Lee Tae-sung, who was known for his power. Seeing Kang Min-ho struggling, the Guardians saw their chance. They moved to attack Demon Slayer from behind, where he couldn’t see them.
They attacked together, just as they had practiced many times. They were sure they could defeat Demon Slayer if they worked as a team.
But then…
Suddenly, everything changed.
“?!!” The Guardians gasped.
It was so close.
Demon Slayer moved in a strange, twisting way, dodging their attack at the last second.
It was like his body wasn’t even human. Yet, even as he moved, his eyes seemed to see everything. He knew exactly where each Guardian was.
“Watch out!” Kang Min-ho shouted.
*Flash!*
*Clang!*
Kang Min-ho bit his lip hard.
If he hadn’t jumped in front of the Guardian, the Guardian’s head would have been cut off. But even as he did it, Kang Min-ho felt a cold fear. This was a mistake.
Demon Slayer’s eyes met his for a moment, and Kang Min-ho saw a cruel smile. Demon Slayer had planned for this.
“Fool,” Demon Slayer hissed.
*Splurt.*
Blood sprayed out.
Demon Slayer’s sword sliced across Kang Min-ho’s arm. At the same time, he used his body to smash into the Guardians around him, throwing them back like toys.
It was too much. They were being crushed.
Was it his magic power?
Or just his skill?
It wasn’t that he had incredibly strong magic.
His power felt like a normal A-rank Hunter’s. But his movements were like an animal, wild and unpredictable. He fought like a monster made only for fighting.
Every time he moved, it was like he cut through the air itself. Blood flew everywhere. He didn’t care about the Guardians’ attacks. He kept pushing forward.
He was fighting like he didn’t care if he got hurt, as long as he could hurt them more. He was taking crazy risks.
“GRAAAH!” Demon Slayer roared.
One Guardian fell. Then another.
Kang Min-ho’s eyes burned with anger and desperation.
He knew they couldn’t keep fighting like this. It was too dangerous. He saw a small opening in Demon Slayer’s attacks. Now was his chance. Kang Min-ho decided to use his strongest move.
*Rumble.*
*Rumble, rumble, rumble.* The ground seemed to shake.
This was the Guardian Sect’s most powerful secret technique.
Magic power exploded from Kang Min-ho.
He gathered all his strength to strike Demon Slayer with one final, powerful blow. But Demon Slayer didn’t back down. He turned to face Kang Min-ho’s power directly.
A smirk.
*’He’s smiling?’* Kang Min-ho thought in shock.
Demon Slayer’s lips curled into a cruel smile.
Kang Min-ho felt cold fear spread through his body.
He knew, in that moment, that he had made a terrible mistake. It was too late to stop. Kang Min-ho was caught in a wave of power, like a giant storm crashing down on him.
*Wham!*
*Wham, wham, wham, wham, wham!* The force hit him again and again.
*Plop.*
“Ugh,” Kang Min-ho groaned.
He coughed, spitting out blood.
His Guardian Sect training in defense had saved his life. But his body was broken and bruised from the attack.
He had lost.
Even with his team, the Guardians, he was no match for Demon Slayer.
But even more than the pain of defeat, a terrifying idea suddenly filled Kang Min-ho’s mind.
“No… it can’t be…”
Kang Min-ho looked up at Demon Slayer, his body shaking.
Dimitri’s successor…
The crazy fighting style…
The sword skills that destroyed everything…
Kang Min-ho remembered what the Marlon Church had said about Dimitri’s family. They had talked about someone who fit this description.
When Dimitri’s best fighter, Samuel, was becoming famous, there was another person in Dimitri’s family who was said to have a power just as strong.
That person was…
‘Dimitri’s Devil, Kevin.’
It was definitely him.
Demon Slayer’s special power had been hidden until now. But if he had Kevin’s power, it explained everything – his crazy actions and his unbelievable fighting skills.
The problem was, Kevin’s successor had gone insane.
Maybe someone strong from Incheon, like Lee Tae-sung, could stop Kevin. But Kang Min-ho felt deep down that even that wouldn’t be enough.
“It’s not enough,” Kang Min-ho whispered.
Demon Slayer looked up at the sky, as if searching for more enemies.
Seeing him covered in blood, still wanting to fight, Kang Min-ho shouted to his remaining soldiers, his voice strained, “Send a message to the Emperor! Tell him Dimitri’s Devil, Kevin’s successor, is killing everyone!”
*Thud.* Kang Min-ho pushed himself up, wincing in pain.
Roman Dimitri had to come.
Kang Min-ho had to hold Demon Slayer back until Dimitri arrived.
He had to.
That was his duty, as the leader of the Guardians. He would protect his people, even if it cost him his life.
