203. Gaze (1)
“Exemplary and highly responsible. Sincere. Model student. Calm and sincere. Highly responsible.”
They were mostly similar. Excellent grades and never caused any problems. A perfect model student. Song Tae-won.
“Isn’t this too much information?”
I hadn’t thought about looking into it because it was personal information, but I cautiously asked Do Hamin if he could investigate one more person. When I said it was Song Tae-won, he told me to search online, so I did. And there it all was, laid out in detail.
Basic personal information, assets—was this supposed to be public? Career, school, hometown, family relations, even various evaluation reports. It was detailed to the point where I wondered if it was okay. It seemed to have been made public due to the various comments that came out when an S-Class Hunter took a high-ranking public office.
“He was similar to how he is now, even in high school.”
He was already so tall back then. He looks much younger than now, but his expression and atmosphere in the photos are similar. …Shouldn’t he be different? He looks more relaxed in high school, though.
“There’s really nothing problematic. It’s not bad, but…….”
Considering who he is, it felt a bit unsettling. A model life that doesn’t deviate from the norm.
His family consisted of his parents and a younger brother. It seems he also lived with his grandfather. His mother and brother died in an accident, and his father died in a dungeon break. I knew he didn’t have any family. I had guessed it was an accident or illness, given his young age.
“This must have had an impact.”
There were no details about the accident. No information about his love life or friendships. I searched just in case, but there was so much information about hunters related to Song Tae-won that I couldn’t filter it out. Maybe I’m just not good at searching. Would I even know if I found something?
“…I’m not a psychologist.”
I think it would be better to get real counseling. I tossed my phone onto the sofa and sprawled out. Piak and Bellalre were riding the robot vacuum cleaner, spinning around. Cute little guys.
“This is difficult, really.”
Now, I couldn’t just run into Song Tae-won like before. It wasn’t about my safety anymore, but Song Tae-won’s life was at stake.
If I provoked him wrongly, he’d try to protect me… Ah, damn it.
“…It’s like I ended up putting a leash on myself after talking about leashes.”
I really don’t know what to do. But I don’t want to give up either. I didn’t want the same ending, or a similar one.
“Would it be easier if the system, if Awakened Ones disappeared altogether? But it probably wouldn’t be that simple.”
I wondered if I should tell them, ‘There are even greater monsters out there.’ But I could guess the reaction. ‘The real monster was someone else; even an S-Class Awakened One is just an ordinary human compared to him!’ That attitude would be too optimistic.
‘Choi Seok-won was also beyond the standard based on current criteria, so should I cautiously bring up that incident? Or would I be touching a landmine?’
If I ask, I must do it by phone. After racking my brain, I picked up my phone again. Ah, really, Chief Song. Should I investigate the people around him? Like from his college days…….
“…Huh.”
Without thinking, I searched ‘Chief Song’s college.’ Chief Song should have much more unrelated information than Song Tae-won. I was about to search ‘Song Tae-won’s college’ again when I saw a familiar face in the image section.
It was a photo of Song Tae-won with children. When I went to the related post, it said that Chief Song had gone to volunteer activities during his college days.
– Look at the difference in size between Chief Song’s hand and the kids’ hands, it’s so heart-fluttering.
– OMG, where did you get this photo?
└ My friend’s brother is Chief’s classmate, so he brought it.
– Chief looks so relaxed back thenㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ
Like the comments said, his face was much more relaxed. But where is this? All the posts on the bulletin board are about Chief Song or related to him. There were tons of posts about Song Tae-won and lots of photos. All with favorable content…….
Ah, is this like a fan site?
There were also posts crying about whether he was overworking, and that they saw him carpooling. In older posts, there were people crying over a compact car on every page. When I went into a post with many comments from the past, it was full of tear emojis, saying he was now walking.
Watching it made me sad too.
“Really, why does he live like that?”
He should get a new car. A large one. The Awakened Ones Management Division has one for work, but what’s with the carpooling to and from work? Even when he goes out… well, he doesn’t really go out much anyway.
I sighed along with people I didn’t know, then bookmarked the site and left.
“A pet, huh.”
There was also a photo of Song Tae-won with a police dog on the site. It seemed to be some kind of event. He had quite a gentle expression then too. Thanks to that, people were arguing about whether Chief Song should have a pet, and how someone so busy could manage it. I suddenly looked back at Piak and Bellalre.
– Piak!
Piak raised one wing slightly. So cute. Having cute kids around makes you feel better and more relaxed. There’s also animal therapy, isn’t there?
Should I get Song Tae-won a Giryeongsu [a type of monster]? A small, cute, and fluffy monster that he can pet.
‘It seems possible if it’s a donation to the country. Should I look into it?’
A dog would be nice, or a cat… A rabbit might suit him surprisingly well. It’s ambiguous as a Giryeongsu, though. It would be less burdensome if it were a Giryeongsu belonging to the state.
…But Yoo-hyun probably has a site like that too. Chief Song’s site had a good atmosphere, so should I look it up? I haven’t done anything to get criticized lately, so it should be fine as long as I don’t look at the old posts. We’ve been on TV, saying we’re close.
A place where only people who like our Yoo-hyun gather. I hadn’t thought much about it before, but after seeing Chief Song’s site, I became curious. Being worried about and cherished like that… it’s really nice.
“Will it come up if I search for Han Yoo-hyun fan site?”
Hmm… No sites are showing up. Then Han Yoo-hyun fan club. Not this either. Haeyeon Guild Leader fan site, also nothing.
Could it be that there isn’t one? That can’t be. Our Yoo-hyun is handsome, cute, and good in many ways. Sung Hyun-jae even had fans who put up birthday ads, so there’s no way Yoo-hyun doesn’t have one.
I was wondering how to search when I got a call. It’s Yerim.
[Uncle! I’m going straight to the rooftop garden.]
“Oh, okay. I’ll head out too.”
As I got up to leave, Piak floated up and followed me. Bellalre was crawling along too. If I left them alone without Peace, they’d probably cause trouble again. I took them both and went up to the rooftop garden.
Strong sunlight, still too early for autumn, was shining down. It was momentarily blocked. A large, spread-out wing came down lightly without a sound. Standing in front of me was a giant Griffin.
The head, paws, and tail tip were milky white, and the body and wings had a subtle golden hue. A fully grown Griffin. The particularly deep golden beak opened wide.
– Kkyawoo!
Blue, raising his voice loudly, looked down at me with sparkling blue eyes. Even fully grown, his playful eyes were the same.
After seeing Yoo-hyun off yesterday afternoon, I started the final training with Blue after applying the skill. Thanks to playing with him often, he finished growing completely after staying up all night.
[Grade 2 Griffin Species ? Golden Griffin Blue
Current Stat Grade S
Potential Stat Grade A~S
Optimized Initial Skills
Wind Dominator (S) Acquired
Golden Arrow (A) Acquired
Wind Resistance (A) Acquired
Sharp Roar (B) Acquired]
Stat Grade S, and he acquired all the initial skills. He grew up wonderfully.
– Piak.
Piak in my arms opened his beak as if surprised to see Blue. I thought he was flustered by the sudden growth, but he spread both wings wide and shouted, quite loudly.
– Piyaak!
…Is he imitating Blue? Bellalre, who was wrapped around my wrist and looking at Piak, held his neck straight.
– Shiiik!
Guys, what are you doing? Blue, no. Don’t do it. Dad’s ears are going to fall off.
“Blue is really all grown up!”
Yerim said, flying down from the Haeyeon Guild building. Blue jumped up happily, breaking a small tree with his tail. …I should put a little Grace [a type of skill] on it, just in case. B-Grade should be enough.
“Yeah, Blue! You’re so handsome!”
– Kkyaa Kkyak!
The two hugged and jumped up and down. Please be a little careful. The tiles on the garden floor are cracking.
“Blue is so lucky. Growing up so fast! Why don’t I grow up faster? Myung-woo oppa grew a lot in three months.”
Yerim said dissatisfiedly, saying she had gotten taller, but not by much.
“You’re still a minor. If you Awaken before twenty, you’ll only grow slightly faster than during puberty. Besides, Myung-woo is a special case.”
Hunters with mid-to-high stats were generally larger than average even before Awakening. Moon Hyun-ah was originally close to 180 cm, and Choi Seok-won, who died, also had a profile height of over 180 cm, I remember. They grow a little more when they Awaken, but usually less than 5 cm. In the case of defense types, they can grow more than 10 cm, they said.
There were cases where physical specs were good but stat grades were low, but once you’re a professional athlete, you’re usually at least E or higher. Thanks to that, professional sports around the world went bankrupt. An Awakened Ones League will be created soon, though.
On the other hand, Myung-woo was originally F-Grade. Since his growth was already complete, he probably grew quickly to match his stats. There were no such cases even before the regression, so I don’t know exactly. There were cases where stats grew by one level, but the growth process itself was slow, taking years. Noah was like that too.
“Blue, we’re going to a dungeon together today.”
– Kkyau.
“But you stayed up all night training, right? Are you okay?”
“I’m fine. You’re fine with staying up one night too. He probably slept during the morning, and if it’s an A-Grade dungeon, he’ll sleep on his own if he gets sleepy.”
Yerim’s dungeon raid was joined by Blue, who had grown up just in time. Blue was scheduled to go on dungeon raids mainly with Yerim and Moon Hyun-ah until a suitable partner appeared. I finished talking with Moon Hyun-ah yesterday.
Since he’s my property, I would receive a certain share of the dungeon raid profits. At first, I didn’t think it was necessary, but Moon Hyun-ah said it was better to be clear, so I even drew up a contract.
“Is the raid preparation going well?”
“I’ve packed everything well. There won’t be anything dangerous anyway, and it’s just about building teamwork.”
Yerim laughed, saying there’s nothing to worry about with two S-Grades.
“Blue’s container truck is also ready. Half of the container’s ceiling can be opened. There are bars, though.”
Even if they’re bars, it’s just a ‘please don’t go out’ level. Blue could easily break them.
I checked Blue’s condition and went over to the Haeyeon Guild. I could see the container truck that Yerim mentioned parked in the guild member’s parking lot. I gave Yerim the token of ownership, and Blue tilted his head.
“Blue, please take care of us!”
Yerim raised her hand, and Blue lightly touched it with his beak. I’m glad he doesn’t seem to have any aversion.
The number of team members was still small. One healer, two support and defense types each, and one attack type, for a total of six people. Ha Eun-ha, whom I saw in the last ranking match, was also there. All of them were older than Yerim.
“Except for the healer, we recruited mainly based on Hunter Park Yerim’s opinion.”
Seok Si-myung approached me and said. It’s rare to find a healer with the right grade, so there’s not much to choose from.
“I did advise that it would be better to have female hunters as much as possible.”
I suddenly remembered what Moon Hyun-ah had said.
“I also think that would be better.”
“That’s probably true. Hunter Park Yerim is especially young, so it’s easy to be underestimated. There are often cases where they seem obedient in front but do other things behind their backs. Our guild had to weed out several in the early days.”
Seok Si-myung smiled bitterly, saying that many people mistakenly thought they could be the real power because Yoo-hyun was young.
“It’s still a transitional period. As time goes on, grades will be prioritized over age or gender in the hunter world. Then there will be problems due to grade discrimination. There’s already quite a bit of discrimination based on grade or type.”
He said it’s difficult for anything to be perfect.
“That’s why there are laws and order. There should be clear differences, but discrimination should be reduced as much as possible.”
I remembered Kim Min-yi talking about support types, but Seok Si-myung seemed quite interested in hunter discrimination. …As someone who had suffered from him, it was a sound that made me feel strange.
Since I didn’t have anything to do with Seok Si-myung before I Awakened, maybe he knew about Yoo-hyun’s situation when I was having a hard time before the regression. So he might have been cold on purpose. …I hope that’s the case. I only received some of Yoo-hyun’s memories, so I don’t know everything.
“Let’s go now! No, let’s go!”
Yerim laughed playfully, saying she felt awkward speaking in a commanding tone. Blue went into the container, and I followed him in case he was anxious.
“Yerim, why are you coming in here?”
“He’s my Giryeongsu, even if it’s temporary. Of course, I have to take care of him.”
She’s saying something admirable. When I meet the new recruit this time, I must not forget to ask about Yerim and Song Tae-won’s Giryeongsu. Soon, the container entrance closed, and the car started moving.
