331. The Third One
A large pink rabbit doll with fluffy, cuddly fur was nestled in Han Yoojin’s arms. Beside him, Han Yoohyun had a sky-blue pony doll with a long mane leaning against him. A large spotted puppy doll sat between the two.
Park Yerim pointed her phone at the brothers, who were half-buried in dolls. She carefully changed the angle this way and that, choosing various filters as she took pictures. The camera sound rang out repeatedly, but neither of them showed any sign of waking up.
“Peeak, go sit on Han Yoohyun’s head.”
– Peeak.
“No, not you, Mister.”
Peeak, who had been sitting on Han Yoojin’s head, fluttered over and landed on the remote control. He skillfully pressed the power button with his tiny toes. As he flipped through channels, Park Yerim snatched the remote away and turned off the TV. Peeak looked back at Park Yerim and cried, “Peeak.”
“No. Ahjussi [term of endearment, like ‘uncle’ or ‘mister’] told you to watch less TV.”
– Peeak! Peeak!
“Go play with Bellare and your toys.”
– Peeak! Peeak!
The little bird, protesting, gave up and flew off. Peace was quietly curled up at Han Yoojin’s feet. Silence fell, and Park Yerim, looking at the brothers sitting side by side, headed to her private bathroom. A few cosmetics, only unwrapped, were scattered on the vanity next to the bathroom. They were gifts she had picked up because the cases were pretty, hoping for advertising effects.
Park Yerim grabbed two lipsticks and took out a few hairpins and hair ties for dolls.
“I’ve always wanted to try this~”
Since the dungeons appeared, school trips had disappeared. This was because it was difficult to safely control children if a dungeon break occurred in another region. The atmosphere had eased a lot now, but beyond thorough surveillance during commuting, many were reluctant to go to school at all. Academies without students were closing one after another. Some places created evacuation facilities and hired even low-level Hunters, touting themselves as safer than leaving children alone at home, and were more prosperous than before.
Park Yerim floated lightly and headed back to the living room. The brothers were still sound asleep. Their expressions looked quite similar. At first, people said they didn’t look alike at all. Their appearances themselves had some similarities that couldn’t hide their blood relation, but their atmospheres were too different.
A cold and strong S-Rank Hunter who stood above everyone despite his young age, and a withdrawn, unstable non-Awakened person full of anxiety. Occasionally, when the two were shown together in articles or broadcasts, most people commented that even if they were family, an S-Rank was different.
But now, people said they looked more alike. Han Yoojin had become more relaxed, and Han Yoohyun had softened. Their faces, bearing similar smiles, really looked like brothers.
‘Then what about me?’ Park Yerim unconsciously pressed her cheek with her palm. Even if you’re complete strangers, expressions can become similar if you live together. She thought back to the Chuseok [Korean harvest festival] broadcast. Did they look alike? There were many comments saying they looked like a family. That they looked good together, that they blended well.
Park Yerim shrugged her shoulders and created a small water droplet at the tip of her finger. Following the movement of her index finger, the water droplet flew and smacked against Han Yoohyun’s cheek. Normally, even if he were asleep, he would have woken up and evaporated the water before it even touched his cheek, but now there was no reaction.
“Okay, this time you can’t move.”
Park Yerim smiled brightly and brought a layered frill ribbon hairpin with a red cubic [cubic zirconia] in the center to his curly black hair. She placed it slightly to the right and looked at it with satisfaction.
She had simply put a pin in the hair of a sleeping person. But the other person was Han Yoohyun. The only people who could put a ribbon pin in that hair were herself and Ahjussi. That made her very proud.
“Will he freak out when he wakes up?”
Should I get a bucket of water ready in advance? He’ll definitely hate it. But that was it. The ribbon pin would burn, but Park Yerim would be fine. Even if she played such pranks, their relationship wouldn’t be strained or broken. There was no need to be cautious. She would sit on the sofa, watch TV, and eat dinner as if nothing had happened.
Park Yerim opened the lipstick this time, looking at Han Yoojin. The simple amount of affection was naturally much greater towards Han Yoojin than Han Yoohyun. It was beyond comparison. She had received a lot of affection and naturally returned it.
However, there was an unavoidable anxiety in her relationship with Han Yoojin. It was a love given suddenly, as if it had fallen from the sky. The reason, ‘Because you’re an S-Rank Awakened,’ was not enough. Moreover, Han Yoojin was surrounded by outstanding people. Han Yoojin clearly cherished Park Yerim, but Park Yerim found it difficult to think of herself as a special existence to him.
‘What if something gained suddenly could disappear suddenly?’
It was none other than Han Yoohyun who had quelled that anxiety that she had tried so hard to ignore.
Han Yoohyun had hated Park Yerim. Because his hyung [older brother] liked her. Han Yoohyun accepted Park Yerim. Because she liked his hyung. Han Yoohyun acknowledged Park Yerim. Because she had the ability to protect his hyung.
Everything was based on Han Yoojin, but Park Yerim was more relieved and happy because of that. Han Yoohyun was everything to her, and he was extremely picky about anything related to him. Such a prickly guy had accepted Park Yerim standing next to his hyung.
“Which color suits him better?”
Park Yerim carefully compared the colors of the lipsticks. Even if it’s a prank, I should apply the better one.
Han Yoohyun would care more about his hyung’s lips than the pin in his own hair. He would grumble, but he wouldn’t push Park Yerim away. He trusted her enough to entrust her with not only Han Yoojin’s safety but also his own.
And Park Yerim, if it was Han Yoohyun, could say without hesitation. They were the most reliable colleagues. Including Peace, the three of them looked in the same direction and moved with the same heart.
A desire to protect Han Yoojin and keep their current life going. If Han Yoojin was in danger, all three of them were ready to leave the other two behind without hesitation to protect him. It was such trust and camaraderie.
Perhaps it was a sense of belonging that was more reassuring than family that allowed Park Yerim to feel at ease. She knew very well that the brothers prioritized each other above anyone else. It wasn’t that she didn’t occasionally wonder if she could fit in between them.
But Park Yerim’s place, her position, was solid, and her world was rapidly expanding. Because she had a reliable home to return to at any time, she could move forward without hesitation. The stability was the foundation for her to accept the trip to Japan without much hesitation.
“It’s well applied! Right, Peace?”
Peace, looking up at Han Yoojin’s face, tilted his head as if wondering what she was doing. Park Yerim hesitated for a moment and then brought the nail polish. She spread out Han Yoojin’s right hand and carefully applied a pastel-toned light pink color with a slight pearl.
Then she applied it to one of Han Yoohyun’s hands and placed them side by side before painting only one of her own fingernails.
“Should I apply it to you too, Peace? Here, put your paw up.”
Peace hesitated and then put out one of his front paws. The brush touched the protruding claw. She wondered for a moment if it was okay to apply it to an animal, but since he was an S-Rank monster far stronger than any human, it would be difficult to harm him.
“It’s the same color as Ahjussi.”
– Keuheung.
“Then now, the most important thing.”
Magic. Park Yerim struggled to suppress the rising corners of her lips and solemnly opened the cap of the thick magic marker.
“What should I write? First, ‘Hyung Baka’ [Older brother idiot] on his forehead. No, he might like it.”
He might shamelessly walk around without erasing it. Han Yoohyun was likely to do that. Then what should I write? What word would annoy Han Yoohyun? She was pondering when.
– Peeak! Bad lizard!
Suddenly, a bluebird popped out and chirped angrily. Then Irin climbed onto Han Yoojin’s shoulder and shouted.
– Go away!
– Peeak! Pee-ee!
Eunhye fluttered quickly and bit the red lizard’s tail. Irin turned around and tried to bite Eunhye as well. The two tumbled and fell onto Han Yoojin’s lap.
“…What are you guys doing?”
– He attacked first!
– Pee-ik! Bad lizard!
“Don’t fight, don’t fight. Why are you guys suddenly like this?”
Not knowing what was going on, Park Yerim tried to stop them. Eunhye and Irin huffed and puffed for a while before returning to their respective owners. And not long after.
“Hyung!”
Han Yoohyun opened his eyes wide, and then Han Yoojin also regained consciousness. But unlike Han Yoohyun, who quickly got up from his seat, Han Yoojin lost consciousness again. Park Yerim was surprised and called out to Han Yoojin.
“Ahjussi? Ahjussi! What’s wrong!”
– Kkeueuung!
“Bring the first aid kit. …Lips, lipstick?”
Han Yoohyun quickly checked Han Yoojin’s condition and said. Peace was restless, and Peeak and Bellare also approached. Park Yerim, flustered, quickly brought the first aid kit and asked.
“What’s wrong? What happened!”
“He overdid it.”
“What?”
“Someone other than me, stronger than us, invaded… Hyung, Hyung! Just stay conscious for a moment. You need to release the poison resistance.”
Han Yoohyun continued, opening the first aid kit and taking out a syringe-shaped antipyretic [fever reducer].
“He said he’d be sick for about a day.”
“A day? Is Ahjussi okay?”
“For now. He said we shouldn’t use potions or healers, and that he should be hospitalized in a regular hospital.”
Han Yoohyun gave Han Yoojin an injection. It was a special antipyretic made with a medicine that didn’t work with poison resistance, but the effect was weak as a result. Park Yerim, who had been blankly watching the scene, snapped out of it and took out her phone.
“A regular hospital? Still, a Hunter-only one would be better, right? I’ll contact the Seseong Guild Leader.”
“Seseong Guild Leader?”
Han Yoohyun asked, puzzled, even as he tried to wake Han Yoojin.
“Park Yerim, you know his contact information?”
“It’s for emergencies. I asked him to contact me if anything urgent happened to Ahjussi. Anyway, Seseong General Hospital is safer.”
‘I’ll contact him,’ Park Yerim said and made a call. Not long after, the other party answered the phone.
“Seseong Guild Leader!”
[What’s wrong, little miss?]
“What’s wrong? Ahjussi needs to go to the hospital! But we can’t use healers or potions.”
After a brief silence, a faint sigh leaked from beyond the phone.
[I’ll send a helicopter, so wait in the rooftop garden. You can hear the details at the hospital.]
“Yes, thank you. Han Yoohyun, let’s go quickly!”
Han Yoohyun held his hyung in his arms. Han Yoojin opened his eyes with difficulty, as the antipyretic took effect.
“Yoohyun, Ah. Yerim…”
“Ahjussi! I’m here!”
“Hyung, poison resistance!”
“It’s nothing serious, don’t worry.”
“It’s hard not to worry, but I won’t worry too much. You shouldn’t worry either, Ahjussi.”
Han Yoojin nodded slightly, turned off his poison resistance, and fell asleep again. Peace, Peeak, and Bellare followed the two out of the house. Park Yerim picked up Peeak and Bellare.
“He’s not really seriously ill, is he?”
“…I don’t know.”
“You don’t know!”
“There was a transcendent I’ve never seen before. I don’t know if he can be trusted.”
Han Yoohyun frowned slightly. Young Chaos. Han Yoojin seemed to trust him a lot already, but Han Yoohyun was uneasy. He would accept help because he needed it, but he didn’t trust him. Rather, he was more wary.
He was someone who could take his hyung away at any time. In addition, the guilt of giving up Han Yoojin’s safety made him even more wary of Young Chaos.
“…Did something weird attach itself to Ahjussi again?”
“…Yeah.”
There was no need for long words. The two sighed simultaneously. Han Yoohyun, waiting for the helicopter to arrive at the rooftop garden, turned to look at Park Yerim with a slightly uneasy gaze.
“Contacting the Seseong Guild Leader personally…”
“I told you, it’s for emergencies for Ahjussi. Ahjussi is good at causing accidents, but you, Han Yoohyun, don’t receive or make calls to strangers. Everything goes through the secretary’s office. I have Secretary Song’s number too. Of course, I also have Hyunah unni’s [older sister] number.”
Park Yerim raised her phone, as if asking if he thought she was like Han Yoohyun.
“Do you want me to show you the list?”
“I don’t need it.”
“Sigh, who else but me would get along with such a rigid Guild Leader? Park Yerim is really an angel.”
“I only need hyung.”
“Yes, yes. I’ll engrave that sound in my ears. Should I write it on your forehead? Or engrave it as a tattoo. What about Ahjussi?”
“His fever has gone down a bit.”
At that moment, the helicopter appeared. The people who got off the helicopter after it landed on the rooftop garden were momentarily taken aback when they saw Han Yoohyun. Noticing where their gazes were directed, Park Yerim quickly reached out and tore the pin from Han Yoohyun’s hair. The frill ribbon pin was twisted beyond recognition in Park Yerim’s grasp.
“…What?”
“No, nothing. I didn’t know there was something on your head?”
Han Yoohyun knew, but he gave her a look that said there was no need to worry about it, and moved on. Soon, the helicopter took off into the air again.
