The Second Son of a Baron – Episode 01 –
About 18 years ago, I died. The cause of death was a traffic accident, all thanks to a drunk driver who deserved far worse. But I, completely innocent, paid the price. Dead as I was, there wasn’t a thing I could do except curse the bastard who killed someone and walked away with only a fracture. Then, I was reborn. In a new world, not Earth.
At first, being reincarnated as a baby with memories of my previous life was… awkward. But the real shock came when I realized this world wasn’t Earth. Seeing flames erupt from people’s hands and swords cleaving through steel like tofu, it hit me: this was a fantasy world, straight out of a novel or movie.
And so, I adapted. No computers or cell phones, but this world had its own charms. My parents were nobles who ruled a small territory, and though I had an older brother, we enjoyed a warm, brotherly relationship, free from the succession squabbles you often read about. And so, 18 years passed. My brother would inherit the territory, and I was idly wondering what I should do with my future, lazing around and worrying, when I heard something unexpected.
“Renil.”
“Yes, Father.”
“I need you to go to the North for about ten years.”
“……Yes?”
What was the North like again? Wasn’t it the most desolate, inhospitable region in the empire, practically synonymous with a desperate, ongoing battle against hordes of monsters? As I panicked at this sudden announcement, my father handed me a piece of paper. By the time I finished reading it, I didn’t even notice the paper crumpling in my fist. I just closed my eyes.
[Enlistment Notice]
The paper contained something I never thought I’d see again.
