Syrup Sweeter Than Syrup (1)
“Hey, wake up, kid!”
A voice even rougher than Jude’s woke Rosette. Clutching her rabbit doll, Rosette burrowed deeper under the covers.
“Hey, kid! If you sleep now, you won’t be able to sleep later!”
“Young Master, wouldn’t it be better to let the young lady sleep since she must be tired?”
“But she needs to eat dinner, right? She needs to eat well to grow big and strong!”
“But she also needs to sleep a lot to grow big and strong.”
“Really?”
The murmuring voices faded away as she drifted back to sleep. Thanks to that, Rosette was able to fall asleep again.
Deep in slumber, she began to dream.
In her first dream, Marquis Dallas appeared. He was furious with Rosette for not properly executing the magic she had learned, and he threw everything he could get his hands on.
-You little bug! Do you think I brought you here to see this pathetic sight!
Rosette’s head was struck by a flowerpot he threw, and she bled. Yet, he didn’t stop. Rosette prostrated herself at his feet, begging for her life.
Save me. Save…… Even in her sleep, Rosette groaned.
Next, her stepsister, Elisha Dallas, appeared. She subtly tormented Rosette through the maids.
Rosette could endure even that. But…….
-Why did you do it? What did Master and Daniel do to deserve to be killed! Why!
Hearing the chilling yet resentful voice, Rosette wept even in her sleep.
It wasn’t my will. I turned back time to fix everything. I’ll change it. I’ll give you everything back.
I will, no matter what it takes.
However, the man, Joshua Ernhardt, didn’t listen to her. With eyes filled with madness, he began to strangle Rosette. As if that would solve everything.
At the same time, Rosette woke up with a gasp, like someone who had just emerged from underwater.
The first thing she saw upon opening her eyes was an unfamiliar ceiling. Rosette stared at the swaying white canopy in the darkness before regaining her senses.
‘That’s right. I turned back time.’
After that, she saved Jane and was adopted into the Adrian family. Rosette sighed in relief, reaffirming the fact.
It was a sigh of hope that she could save the people of the Adrian family, just as she had saved Jane.
At the same time, she suddenly felt all the strength drain from her body. Rosette was about to close her eyes again, succumbing to the overwhelming exhaustion.
Then, she saw sunlight seeping through the curtains and widened her eyes. It was morning.
‘I slept all day!’
Sleeping on her first day at the Adrian estate. What would people think?
Rosette was startled and got out of bed. However, not accustomed to her small body, she lost her balance and tumbled to the floor.
“Kya!”
With a scream, there was a loud crash.
“What’s wrong, young lady!”
Joan rushed in and approached Rosette, who was tangled in the blanket on the floor. She immediately understood what had happened and picked Rosette up.
“Are you alright?”
“Uh-huh.”
“Are you hurt anywhere?”
“No.”
“That’s a relief. It would be terrible if your precious body were harmed.”
Joan sat Rosette back on the bed and wiped her face with a warm, damp towel. The towel was soft, and Joan’s touch was even softer.
Rosette blushed, feeling like a real child, but Joan simply smiled at her expression.
“There, all done. By the way, aren’t you hungry? You haven’t eaten anything since breakfast yesterday.”
“I’m fine……”
She was about to habitually say she was fine when a rather loud rumbling sound came from Rosette’s flat stomach. Rosette’s face turned even redder.
Joan barely suppressed a laugh and whispered.
“The two young masters and the eldest young lady are still in their morning training. It will be a while before we have a meal, so I’ll bring you a warm glass of milk.”
Joan left the room before Rosette could say she was fine. Soon after, she returned with a large mug of milk.
“Drink slowly.”
“Uh-huh.”
Rosette blew on the milk and drank it slowly, as Joan had told her. When she finished the milk, Joan wiped the milk ring from her lips with a handkerchief.
“Are you feeling a little less hungry now?”
“Yes.”
Rosette hesitated before asking.
“Um, Joan. Can I go watch the training?”
“Training? Oh, you mean the morning training?”
Rosette nodded instead of answering. Joan was lost in thought. Rosette glanced at her and asked again.
“Can’t I?”
“It’s not that you can’t. There’s no place in this mansion that the young lady can’t go. However, I’m worried that the young lady might be surprised……”
“It’s okay! I can not be surprised!”
Joan nodded, taken aback by Rosette’s first display of enthusiasm.
“Alright. But first, let me change your clothes.”
Joan led Rosette to the dressing room. She sized up Rosette’s figure and began to rummage through the dresses.
“For now, I’ve brought clothes that Young Lady Isabel can’t wear because they’re too small. But they still look big on you.”
“Yeah.”
“I should call a tailor today. Ah, this one might be a little better.”
The dress Joan chose was a plain white one-piece with no decorations. Isabel, who was learning swordsmanship, disliked cumbersome clothes and naturally didn’t add lace or ornaments to her clothes.
“Okay, put your hands up.”
When Rosette raised her hands, Joan skillfully changed her clothes. The sleeves were large, but they looked decent enough when folded a couple of times.
Joan took Rosette’s hand.
“Okay, shall we go?”
* * *
The training grounds were about a 10-minute walk from the main building. Even before arriving at the training grounds, loud shouts could be heard.
“Everyone’s too slow. Faster!”
“Yes!”
“That’s not loud enough! One more lap!”
Rosette was slightly surprised but walked on without showing it. When she entered the training grounds, she saw a group of people running in lines.
‘He’s not here.’
However, the people Rosette was looking for were not there. Rosette was slightly disappointed.
“Oh? The kid’s awake!”
A clear voice was heard, and Lucas ran over with a wooden sword slung over his shoulder. Lucas, who was instantly in front of her, began to tease Rosette.
“You were a sleepyhead, weren’t you?”
Rosette’s face flushed again.
“I’m not a sleepyhead……”
“Really? But your eyes are swollen like a fish.”
When Rosette covered her eyes with both hands, Lucas laughed heartily.
“But why are you here? Why didn’t you go to the dining hall?”
“I heard everyone was here……”
Rosette hesitated and slightly parted her small fingers to look at Lucas.
“But where is Daniel……?”
“Daniel? He went out with Father for a bit. But why do you call him Daniel?”
“Huh? What else should I call Daniel…….”
“You should call him ‘oppa’ [older brother, used by girls].”
Rosette was surprised and waved her hands wildly.
“But how can I…….”
Lucas narrowed his eyes as Rosette hesitated.
“You’re not going to call me Lucas, are you?”
Why wouldn’t she? Rosette was planning to refer to him as ‘Lucas-nim’ [a formal honorific] anyway.
As Rosette couldn’t easily deny it, Lucas’s eyes narrowed even further.
“You’re my sister now. Right?”
“……Yes.”
“But isn’t it weird to use the title ‘-nim’ among family members?”
Honestly, she didn’t know if it was weird or not. Rosette had never had a family since birth.
In her previous life, she was adopted by Marquis Dallas and had a family, but the titles used to refer to family members were always ‘Marquis Dallas-nim’ or ‘Elisha-nim’.
However, judging from the atmosphere, it seemed like she should answer that it was weird. Rosette slowly nodded. Only then did Lucas smile satisfactorily.
“Right, you think it’s weird too, don’t you?”
“……Yes.”
“Then call me Lucas ‘oppa’.”
“…….”
“Hurry.”
She had used the title ‘oppa’ for older boys in the orphanage. But somehow, the title at that time and the title calling Lucas felt the same yet different.
It felt somehow embarrassing and awkward. Rosette hesitated, clasped her hands together, and whispered.
“Lucas…… Ugh.”
“What? I can’t hear you.”
“Lucas oppa.”
Rosette’s ears were already red. Lucas laughed heartily as if satisfied.
“Good, good. I finally have a younger sister! I’m not the youngest anymore!”
He seemed to be happy about something a little strange, but Rosette was relieved that Lucas seemed happy. At the same time, it was a bit strange.
‘Why is everyone welcoming me?’
No one welcomed her in the Dallas family. Even though Marquis Dallas introduced Rosette as a child needed by the family, everyone showed animosity.
In particular, Elisha openly wrinkled her nose, saying that Rosette, who couldn’t wash properly and was grimy, smelled like garbage.
To make matters worse, even after Rosette washed cleanly, she would often complain that she smelled cheap.
Rosette thought that was a normal reaction. The nobles she had seen had the idea that they were different from commoners and tended to look down on them.
But adopting a commoner orphan? From their point of view, it would be similar to welcoming livestock into the family.
In fact, Isabel, whom she met yesterday, seemed a little reluctant to adopt Rosette at first. Of course, unlike Elisha, she seemed to be worried about Rosette.
However, Daniel and Lucas showed no signs of opposing the Duke of Adrian’s decision. Rather, the atmosphere was welcoming to Rosette.
Rosette was curious about the reason, but she couldn’t bring herself to ask.
“But why is Daniel?”
“Ah…….”
At those words, Rosette pursed her lips.
‘I need to warn Daniel soon.’
While drinking the milk that Joan brought, Rosette reminded herself of the first thing she had to do. No matter what, preventing Daniel’s accident was the priority.
All she knew about Daniel’s accident was that it happened in the spring of the year she was adopted into the Dallas family and that it was a scheme orchestrated by Marquis Dallas.
She didn’t know exactly when or how it would happen.
However, she heard that the carriage wheel came off, causing the carriage to fall off a cliff. The carriage even caught fire, and he almost lost his life.
Since the accident could happen any day now, she wanted to warn him as soon as possible. To tell him to double-check the carriage wheels when riding in a carriage.
‘It’ll be okay for now. I’ll tell him in the evening.’
Because it’s not spring yet, but winter. Rosette thought so and vaguely made excuses.
“I just wanted to see Daniel.”
But it was strange. Lucas’s expression strangely distorted at those words, and he pouted.
“You wanted to see Daniel, but you didn’t want to see me?”
“……Huh?”
“You’ve only spent a few days with Daniel and you’ve already become close?”
Rosette couldn’t understand why Lucas was angry at all. But before she could figure out the reason, Lucas shouted.
“Good! I’ll show you that I’m a better brother than Daniel!”
