139. Pipi’s Letter
2024.03.18.
“Dance? But I don’t really like dancing.”
“But…”
When Rosette didn’t give a definite answer, Michael pulled out his last card.
“How long ago was that?”
Rosette hesitated for a moment before agreeing.
“Okay. I’ll do that.”
As soon as Michael replied, Perito climbed up Rosette’s arm and licked her cheek with his bright red tongue.
If Pipi had seen it, she would have freaked out, shouting, ‘That nasty snake is touching our Rosette!’ but fortunately, Pipi hadn’t returned yet.
“I told you not to call me Rose.”
With Rosette’s grumbling words, Perito slipped out of the room.
* * *
“Hey, Melody. What would be a good birthday gift?”
Melody looked puzzled at Rosette’s vague question.
“Birthday gift? Who is it for?”
“Just…”
How should she define her relationship with Joshua? They certainly weren’t friends, but she couldn’t confidently say they were close either.
As Rosette mumbled vaguely, Melody’s eyes narrowed with suspicion.
“Who is it? Did you secretly get a lover?”
“No, nothing like that!”
“If it’s not, then it’s not. Why are you shouting?”
Melody grumbled softly before sticking close to Rosette with interest.
“Then a friend?”
“No, not a friend either.”
“Then who? Oh, now that I think about it, the little master’s birthday is coming up soon.”
“Not Lucas either.”
“The first young lady?”
“Not my sister either.”
Melody sighed as if frustrated.
“Then who is it? I need to know who you’re giving it to so I can help you think about it.”
Rosette hesitated for a moment before confessing honestly.
“It’s almost His Highness the First Prince’s birthday. That’s why I’ve been worrying about it.”
Melody spoke as if wondering why she was worrying about such a thing.
“I don’t know much about the social scene, but wouldn’t Duke Adrian or the first young master give a gift on behalf of the family?”
“Yeah, they do.”
As Melody said, Daniel was preparing a gift as the representative for Joshua’s birthday this year. Before that, Duke Adrian had prepared it.
So, in fact, Rosette didn’t need to worry about it so much on the surface.
“But I still want to give him something.”
“Are you and His Highness special?”
“Rather than special, we’re just, you know, acquaintances?”
“Hmm.”
Melody stared intently at Rosette’s face, as if trying to gauge her inner thoughts.
“Do you perhaps adore His Highness?”
“No, nothing like that!”
“You know, Rosette, you always deny it so vehemently when you’re hit right on the mark.”
“No, really, it’s not like that.”
“Well, whatever. How about preparing a gift that contains your sincerity?”
“Sincerity?”
“Yeah.”
Now that her interest had waned a bit, Melody went back to her seat and muttered.
“Someone like His Highness probably wouldn’t be satisfied with just any gift. It might be better to show your sincerity.”
As Rosette pondered, Melody blurted out,
“How about a letter?”
“A letter?”
Rosette was a bit skeptical.
‘His Highness didn’t react much to the letters I sent before, though.’
She had often sent letters to Joshua when she was in Adrian territory and when she was studying abroad in the Ivelin Kingdom. However, he didn’t show any emotion to the letters, let alone reply properly.
“Yeah, a letter. I think it would be really nice to receive a heartfelt letter from you.”
“Okay, I’ll think about it. Thanks.”
After that, Rosette returned to her room and asked Pipi, “How about a letter as a birthday gift for His Highness?” Pipi tilted her head and showed a skeptical reaction.
‘There’s still time left, so I should think about it more and decide. If there’s nothing else to give, I’ll give him a letter.’
Rosette decided that and waited for Joshua’s birthday to come.
* * *
‘In the end, I couldn’t find a suitable gift.’
Rosette sighed deeply as she looked at herself in the mirror.
Time flowed faster than she thought, and it was already the day of Joshua’s birthday party. Rosette, as well as Duke Adrian and the three siblings, were moving busily from morning to prepare for the party.
Joan, who was instructing the maids who were helping with the preparations, asked with a puzzled look.
“Young lady, are you not satisfied?”
“Huh? No, I am. Why suddenly?”
“You sighed. I thought you weren’t satisfied. If you’re not satisfied but can’t say it, please tell me honestly.”
“No, I’m really fine.”
Joan was a little distrustful of Rosette’s smiling words, so she changed her hairstyle this way and that way.
In the end, the hair was decided to be half-up. Before changing into her dress, Rosette asked the maids for their understanding.
“I have something to do for a moment, so can I be alone?”
“Of course. There’s still time. Call us when you’re done with everything.”
After all the maids left, Rosette took out the stationery she had prepared in advance. The stationery, made of high-quality paper that she usually didn’t use because it was expensive, was gold, resembling Joshua’s eye color.
[Chirp?]
Rosette nodded dejectedly at Pipi’s question, asking if she was giving a letter as a birthday gift after all.
“Yeah, I couldn’t think of anything suitable. I thought about making a handkerchief, but I’ve already given him two.”
[Peep!]
It’s okay. A letter is good too.
“I wonder if His Highness will like it?”
[Pee.]
I don’t know if Silver Master will like it.
Pipi answered too honestly. When Rosette drooped her eyebrows, the little bird then added, ‘If I were Silver Master, I would have been very happy to receive a letter! Silver will like it too!’
“But it’s important that His Highness likes it.”
[Pee.]
I like it, but you care more about Silver Master’s opinion?
“Because today is His Highness’s birthday. Of course, I’m so grateful for your words.”
Rosette soothed Pipi, who was sulking and puffing up her feathers, and then picked up a quill pen. She tried to write a letter with sincerity, but she didn’t have as much to say as she thought.
She had already said sorry and thank you to Joshua countless times, so it didn’t seem very sincere. Besides, she didn’t want to write such words in a birthday congratulatory letter.
After pondering, Rosette carefully wrote down the honest feelings that were swirling in her head on the small stationery.
After waiting for the ink to dry, she sealed the letter with a wax seal.
Then, Pipi flew over as if she had been waiting, dipped her feet in the ink bottle, and hopped on the stationery.
“Pipi!”
[Chirp!]
Pipi flapped her wings at Rosette as if asking what was wrong.
“I worked hard to write the letter, but what are you doing playing around? I have to write it again.”
Pipi wiped her feet on a towel stained with makeup and pecked Rosette’s hand with her beak as she tried to take out new stationery.
[Peep! Peep!]
“…You wrote a letter to His Highness too?”
[Chirp!]
Rosette looked down at the stationery, listening to Pipi’s words that she had written the letter with sincerity in her feet.
Looking at it again after hearing Pipi’s words, the little bird’s footprints seemed to have a series of rules, not a mess. Of course, it couldn’t be seen in human language.
But if a stranger saw it, it would look like graffiti. It would look like that to Joshua too.
“What… what did you write?”
[Pee-it!]
‘This Pipi also congratulates Silver Master on his birthday!’
“Oh, I see. I guess I can’t rewrite the letter?”
[Chirp? Peep!]
“Oh, I can’t. No, Pipi. It’s not that I’m ignoring your sincerity, but His Highness might see it as graffiti…”
[Pee-it!]
“No, that… Yes, His Highness will recognize your sincerity too. He will, right?”
Rosette looked at Pipi, who was jumping up and down, and had no choice but to start decorating the letter with Pipi’s footprints. After decorating it with dried flower petals and other things, she put the letter in a small handbag to take to the party.
After that, she called the maids again to finish the preparations, and then took a carriage to the Imperial Palace with her family.
Daniel and Ines went in a separate carriage, and Rosette traveled with Duke Adrian, Lucas, and Isabel.
“Hey, Lucas. What gift did Daniel prepare?”
“I’m not sure, but it seemed like he prepared a sword.”
“A sword?”
“Yeah. He said he commissioned a craftsman to custom-make it with minerals containing magic. Actually, I don’t know much either. My brother didn’t tell me.”
“I see.”
Lucas, who had answered casually, asked back a little late.
“But why are you asking?”
“Just because. I was curious.”
“Hmm.”
Lucas looked at Rosette with a suspicious face, but she looked out the window and pretended not to notice. She looked calm on the outside, but she was actually very nervous on the inside.
‘I should have just prepared an expensive gift too.’
But regret was too late. Unlike her, the carriage arrived at the Imperial Palace too quickly. Rosette moved her heavy steps with Lucas’s escort.
[Chirp.]
Pipi whispered to have confidence, but she didn’t feel confident.
Even while talking with Clara and Theresa after entering the hall, her head was complicated.
As the atmosphere of the party matured to some extent, someone called her.
“Rose.”
When she turned around, Michael was standing there. He neatly swept his short hair back from his forehead and smiled as soon as he met Rosette’s eyes.
“Long time no see, how have you been?”
But at the same time, a trumpet sounded, and a servant announced Joshua’s appearance.
“His Highness the First Prince has arrived!”
Rosette unknowingly turned her head and looked at the entrance.
Because of that, she didn’t see Michael’s eyes, which had been filled with laughter, turn coldly.
