145. Rosette’s Confession
March 24, 2024
“What’s the problem with that?”
Isabelle’s tone wasn’t accusatory, but genuinely curious.
Rosette, who thought she had explained enough, was flustered and continued her rambling explanation.
“Well, aristocratic marriages are about the union of families, right?”
“That’s right.”
“So, I can’t just decide on my marriage partner as I please, can I?”
Isabelle sighed.
“Rosette, I think you’re mistaken. You don’t need to worry about that.”
“…Pardon?”
“In aristocratic marriages, especially those of high-ranking nobles like Adrian, you can’t ignore the vested interests. Unless you leave the family, you can’t completely exclude the family from marriage. But so what?”
Isabelle turned to Rosette, looking almost like she was glaring at her.
“Frankly, you’re not Adrian’s heir, are you? It’s not that your marriage has no impact on Adrian. But you’re not Daniel, who is the heir, right? Your marriage will have a very minimal impact on our family. It doesn’t matter if your partner is a high-ranking noble or not.”
“But, Sister, still, as an Adrian, I can’t help but consider various factors.”
“Father has no intention of using you for political purposes, nor does he intend to profit from your marriage. Unless your partner is utterly vile, that is.”
“……”
“So, what I mean is…”
Isabelle sighed once and relaxed her expression.
“I don’t know who it is, but unless you don’t like the man, you don’t have to hide your feelings just because of the family. And accepting a confession doesn’t mean you’re getting married right away, does it? You might not even get married. Who gets married just because they’re dating these days?”
Rosette was a little surprised. She didn’t expect Isabelle, the most principled and somewhat rigid of the three siblings, to say such a thing.
Unfortunately, Rosette was not completely convinced by Isabelle’s words.
Isabelle’s advice was certainly valid. But would she say the same thing if she knew the other party was Joshua?
Rosette hesitated, then was startled by Isabelle’s next words.
“And what, is the person who confessed to you a prince or something?”
“…Yes?”
“The other party would have to be a prince for you to worry about the family, wouldn’t they? What are you so seriously worried about?”
*Yes, that’s the problem. If it were just a regular noble, or even a commoner, I wouldn’t be so worried.*
Rosette swallowed her honest feelings and denied it.
“No, it’s not.”
Isabelle scrutinized Rosette’s face as if to discern the truth. Rosette forced a smile.
Isabelle, having read something in her face, continued.
“Even if the other party is a prince, my opinion remains the same. Think of your heart first, not the family. Do you like him?”
It was a piercing question.
“Not just that you’ve been curious about him, but do you like him as a man?”
“I…”
Rosette couldn’t answer immediately.
Before and after receiving Joshua’s confession, she hadn’t properly looked into her own heart. Whenever she tried to delve a little deeper, she stopped thinking because of practical problems.
“I…”
Isabelle, who had been patiently waiting for Rosette’s answer, rose from her seat when she only mouthed the words.
“Well, I can’t solve your heart for you, so think about it more yourself. Anything else you’re curious about?”
“No.”
“Then I’ll go in now. The sunlight is strong, so don’t stay out too long.”
‘Or you’ll collapse again,’ she added quietly, her words drifting in the breeze. Rosette dangled her feet and hurriedly asked Isabelle’s departing figure.
“What about you, Sister?”
“What?”
“Why don’t you accept Lord Roten’s feelings?”
Isabelle, who had been slowing her pace, turned around sharply.
“What?”
“It seems like Lord Roten is in love with you, and isn’t it the same for you? Even at the hunting competition…”
“That’s none of your business, Rose. That’s my problem, so I’ll take care of it myself.”
Isabelle said primly and quickly disappeared towards the mansion. Rosette, smiling faintly at her swaying silver hair, erased her smile and stared blankly at the book she had opened.
*What about my heart…*
She hadn’t gotten a perfect answer from her conversation with Isabelle. But she felt a little relieved.
She already had faith that her family would support her no matter what choice she made, but it had become a little stronger.
Surely Duke Adrian, Daniel, Isabelle, and even Lucas would be surprised if Rosette confessed that she liked Joshua, but they would be on her side.
Perhaps they might even support Joshua more to protect her.
Rosette thought it might be a burden to the family. But after hearing Isabelle’s words, she realized that her family wouldn’t consider it a burden at all.
Now, the really important thing was Rosette, her own heart.
*Then I am…*
That night, Rosette sent Pipi to the Imperial Palace after much thought. Pipi carried a small note in its beak.
A little later, Silver, with Pipi on its head, jumped through the window. For the record, Pipi was proudly puffing out its chest with a few strands of Silver’s fur, presumably from Silver, in its beak.
“Silver?”
[Woof!]
“Your Highness?”
But Joshua’s voice, which she always heard when she called him like that, was not heard. Rosette was wondering about it when Silver lowered its body in front of her.
Rosette naturally got on its back, and Silver left the room and began to run.
As Silver entered the edge of the forest, Rosette’s heart began to beat rapidly.
In fact, it had been like that since she got on Silver’s back, or perhaps since she sent the note through Pipi.
It felt like someone was squeezing her heart, and it was hard to breathe.
Soon, Joshua’s figure was seen standing in the usual meeting place. He silently watched Silver, carrying Rosette on its back, approach.
“Your Highness.”
Rosette, who got off the ground after Silver stopped, hesitated a little away from Joshua.
Pipi watched the two of them with great interest from Silver’s head, but soon Silver ran to the other side with Pipi on its back.
[Piiip!]
Seeing Pipi wailing ‘You barbaric wolf!’ in the distance, it seemed that it had tried to escape in the middle but was swallowed again by Silver.
It was a situation that made her want to laugh, but she couldn’t bring herself to laugh. Rosette awkwardly raised the corners of her mouth and muttered.
“Pipi is determined to pluck all of Silver’s fur. It seems like it plucked a little earlier, so maybe it will pluck more?”
“No wonder Pipi gave me the note and then ran at Silver.”
“It was holding the fur anyway.”
With those words, the conversation ended for a moment. After a silence, Joshua spoke first.
“About that note.”
“Yes.”
“What is it you wanted to talk about?”
Rosette had written in the note, ‘I have something important to talk about, so please send Silver.’ She didn’t say anything else in detail.
Joshua looked a little nervous, as if he had no idea what she was going to say.
Rosette didn’t even think about seeing Joshua in person when she handed over the note through Pipi. She was embarrassed to say it face to face.
“I was surprised that you called me here; I thought you would just send Silver.”
“That’s…”
Joshua scratched his neck as if he was a little embarrassed.
“Would you believe me if I said I wanted to see your face?”
Michael had certainly said something like that before. But the heart that hadn’t been anything at that time was now pounding violently.
From her attitude, Rosette realized that her decision was right. She whispered shyly.
“Actually, I wanted to see you too.”
“Then…”
“More than that!”
Rosette quickly changed the subject.
“I talked to my sister Isabelle today.”
“The Princess?”
“Yes. About me and Your Highness. Ah, of course, I didn’t say anything specific. Isabelle doesn’t know that the person I mentioned is Your Highness. Of course, she might have guessed.”
Joshua narrowed the distance that Rosette had created and approached.
“What did you talk about?”
“I just consulted about the impact my marriage would have on the Adrian family. Isabelle said that since I am not Daniel, my influence is not as great as you think.”
Rosette imitated Isabelle’s cold voice and tone, and Joshua relaxed his expression a little and smiled.
“Actually, what my sister really wanted to say was to not worry about such things and do what you want.”
“……”
“Thinking about it, it’s a little funny to say do what you want. Since coming to Adrian, I’ve lived the way I wanted to. I’ve acted as I pleased, worrying my father, sister, and brother.”
Rosette smiled softly and then made a serious expression again.
“Your Highness, I’m still afraid of becoming the Empress. My family will all support me, but my heart is not at ease. Even if Your Highness tells me to see Your Highness as Joshua, it’s not easy.”
“……”
“I can’t guarantee what will happen in the future. Even if I like Your Highness now, I might not become the Princess, or even the Empress, later on.”
Joshua’s eyes widened slightly. Rosette approached him closely and smiled brightly.
“But I decided to be honest with my heart, accepting Isabelle’s advice. You know, Your Highness. If everything I said is okay, if it’s okay to be together right now even if we can’t be together for the rest of our lives…”
“……”
“Yes, I think I like Your Highness too.”
