The Master of Magic (1)
It was then. Silver barked loudly outside the blanket.
Not only that, but Bbibbi was crying, “Emergency, Rosette! Emergency!”
“I don’t know, I’ll check it out.”
Rosette kicked off the blanket and got out of bed. Immediately, she saw Silver pacing back and forth next to the bed, looking helpless, and Bbibbi jumping on the wolf’s head.
Rosette grabbed Silver’s muzzle to keep the others from waking up.
“Shh, Silver. Please be quiet so people don’t wake up. I can’t understand you no matter how much you talk.”
Silver drooped his tail with a wronged expression. Rosette stroked the wolf’s back in apology.
“Bbibbi, can you explain? What’s wrong?”
Bbibbi sat on Rosette’s shoulder and chirped.
[Bbeep! Bbeeping!]
“Silver says something happened to Duke Adrian!”
“To Dad?”
Silver nodded, his muzzle still held by Rosette.
“I don’t know what happened, but it seems so. Silver, you stay here. Bbibbi, come with me.”
Rosette left Silver in the room, who was giving her a look that said he wanted to follow, and tried to run to Duke Adrian’s office.
[Bbit!]
Then Bbibbi pulled her hair. It meant not the office, but the bedroom. Rosette changed direction and ran to the Duke’s bedroom in one go.
She knocked, but there was no answer from inside. Rosette opened the door without hesitation and rushed inside.
“Dad!”
Duke Adrian was sitting on the bed. He was clutching his left chest with his right hand, and his breathing, which was usually even during swordsmanship training, was rough.
“Dad, what’s wrong? Are you not feeling well?”
When she went closer to examine his face, there was cold sweat on his forehead. The Duke closed his eyes and breathed heavily, even though Rosette was right next to him.
It was unclear whether he didn’t notice her presence or whether he was not in good enough condition to answer.
“I’ll call a doctor, I’ll call a doctor.”
Rosette was about to pull the bell cord, but changed her mind and tried to run directly to the doctor’s room. At that moment, Duke Adrian grabbed her arm as she got up.
“It’s okay, Rose. Dad is, really okay, so go back to your room and rest.”
“You don’t look okay!”
Tears welled up in Rosette’s eyes.
Duke Adrian was a picture-perfect father to his four children. He seemed like he would protect his four children no matter what, and he actually did.
He never showed any signs of pain or difficulty in front of his children. So Rosette could indulge in his affection without any worries, only to the Duke.
It was the first time Duke Adrian had shown such a sight. Naturally, Rosette couldn’t help but panic.
“What’s wrong? You need to call a doctor for an examination.”
Duke Adrian crawled onto the bed and hugged Rosette tightly as she observed him. His body, which was already warm, was as hot as fire.
“Dad is really okay. I just had a nightmare. So calm down, baby.”
“But…”
“You must have been very surprised because of Dad. It’s okay. It’s all okay.”
The Duke was the one who was sick, but he was the one comforting Rosette. Rosette tried to hold back her tears because she didn’t want to worry him.
By the time she barely stopped crying, the trembling in Duke Adrian’s body had subsided a lot.
Rosette wiped her wet cheeks and calmly examined Duke Adrian’s face. The Duke’s face, faintly visible in the darkness, was definitely more stable than before.
“Really, don’t I need to call a doctor?”
“Yes. By the way, I think I woke you up.”
“Uh-uh, no. I couldn’t sleep tonight, so I was reading a book.”
“But what brought you to Dad’s room?”
“Bbibbi told me that something seemed to have happened to Dad.”
“Bbibbi did?”
“Yes.”
Actually, Silver was also there, but she decided to keep that a secret.
Bbibbi puffed out her chest and was proud of herself when she received Duke Adrian’s gaze. The Duke praised Bbibbi instead of scolding her.
“Yes, familiars [magical companions] are always amazing no matter how many times I see them.”
[Bbit!]
“Dad is really okay, so go to sleep now. It’s late.”
“Dad.”
Rosette moved closer to Duke Adrian.
“What kind of dream did you have to be like that? It doesn’t seem like a normal dream.”
“Well.”
Duke Adrian smiled and stroked his eyes.
“It was a terrible nightmare.”
If he used the modifier ‘terrible,’ what level of nightmare was it? Rosette was worried and kept asking.
“What was it about?”
“Well, I don’t think it’s something I can tell you.”
“I’m an adult now. I don’t mind hearing about nightmares.”
“Even if you’re an adult, you always look like a child in this dad’s eyes. You, Lucas, Isabel, and Daniel, too.”
“But…”
“And it’s something that will never actually happen, so you really don’t have to worry. So go now.”
Duke Adrian carefully pushed Rosette’s back with a firm face. It wasn’t a strong force enough to push her away, but Rosette got up from the bed in a daze.
“Okay, Dad. But if something else happens, you have to tell me.”
Rosette was about to leave the dark room when she suddenly flinched.
‘Come to think of it, this is the first time in 12 years that I’m leaving Dad like this.’
To be exact, the place where Rosette defeated Duke Adrian in the past was not his bedroom but his office. However, the way she was leaving the Duke reminded her of the past she wanted to forget.
Then the Duke called out to her.
“Rose.”
“Yes?”
The Duke smiled in the darkness.
“This dad is so grateful that you became my daughter.”
Over that face, the image of him worrying about her, telling her never to go back to Duke Dallas, came to mind.
That past was gone, but Rosette felt uncomfortable as if she was deceiving the Duke. She smiled, trying to calm her wanting-to-cry heart.
“I’m so grateful that Dad became my dad, too.”
You don’t know how fortunate I was that you found me first, not Duke Dallas, that day 12 years ago.
“Then good night.”
* * *
When Rosette returned to her room with Bbibbi, Silver greeted her, circling around her. Rosette, who had expected Silver to have returned, was secretly happy about the wolf’s presence.
“Silver, you’re still here.”
Joshua asked from beyond the magic communication tool [a device for long-distance conversation] when he heard Rosette’s voice.
“It wasn’t a big deal. No, was it a big deal?”
<......?>
“It seems like Dad had a nightmare.”
“I don’t know because he didn’t tell me. But was it something serious…”
Rosette stopped trying to explain in detail the state of Duke Adrian that she had seen.
She didn’t want to let anyone else know that he was in so much pain that he couldn’t even feel her presence. Even if the other person was Joshua.
“No, it’s nothing. Anyway, he’s okay now, so you don’t have to worry.”
“I don’t think you need to. Of course, I’d be happy if Your Highness came.”
“It’s not easy to get used to yet. Please understand. I’ve been calling you Your Highness for over 12 years.”
Joshua muttered a little dissatisfied.
“That’s different. Your Highness is Your Highness.”
Rosette put the necklace back around Silver’s neck before he could show any more dissatisfaction.
“Anyway, it’s late. I’ll send Silver back now, so Your Highness should go to sleep soon, too.”
<...Okay.>
With those words, the communication tool turned off. Rosette looked at the communication tool with a regretful expression and kissed Silver’s forehead.
“You have to protect His Highness well. Got it, Silver?”
Silver barked as if to say, ‘Trust me!’ and jumped out the window.
Rosette, who was about to lie down on the bed with Bbibbi, felt uneasy for some reason and headed back to Duke Adrian’s bedroom.
She carefully opened the door and tiptoed inside. But the Duke was not in bed.
‘Where did he go?’
Normally, she would have just returned to her room, but she was uneasy because of what had happened earlier. This time, Rosette headed to the office.
No light was leaking from the office.
‘Isn’t he here either?’
Still, just in case, she opened the door and went inside, and Rosette was surprised by the scene inside. Her legs gave way, and she collapsed in front of the door.
“Rose?”
The scene inside was nothing special. Duke Adrian was just sitting at his desk without even lighting a candle.
However, from that trivial scene, Rosette ended up recalling the past.
The moment she faced Duke Adrian alone in the dark office on the day she came to assassinate him under the orders of Duke Dallas.
“…Rose, are you okay?”
Her mind went blank. Duke Adrian’s voice, which had already come close to her, sounded faint as if it were coming from far away.
His surprised expression also looked blurry.
She coughed as she felt something rising from her body, and red blood gushed out.
“…!”
The sound of Duke Adrian urgently calling for a doctor was also faintly heard.
Rosette completely lost consciousness, feeling the Duke carefully holding her in his arms.
