182. Becky Lane (1)
The hands clasped together trembled slightly. Rosette could easily read his mind.
Even though it was an illusion created by a monster, Joshua must have cut down Rosette, whom he loved, several times.
He must have felt relieved after defeating it and seeing the torn Memento, but that wouldn’t have erased the shock.
‘I would have been the same.’
Even if she knew that the Joshua in front of her was fake, could she attack him? What if it were other family members?
If the Memento attacked her in the form of Duke Adrian or Daniel, whom she had already killed once with her own hands, could she really use attack magic against them?
It was a situation she didn’t even want to imagine.
But Joshua and the subjugation team had experienced that terrible situation countless times.
Even today, he had tried to attack the real Rosette with all his might. The shock of almost harming her with his own hands still seemed to linger.
“It’s okay.”
Rosette patted Joshua’s hand.
“It was an unavoidable situation. I would have thought you were a monster too.”
“But I almost…”
Joshua ran a hand over his face.
“I couldn’t recognize you and almost killed you.”
“But you did recognize me in the end, right?”
“I thought something was different from usual. But the fact remains that I attacked you without properly recognizing you.”
“But you completely recognized me at the end and stopped attacking.”
“That’s…!”
Joshua, who had been whispering quietly, raised his voice and then sighed.
“The result was that I stopped. But you were really in danger. Why did you stop defending? What if I had really attacked your vital points?”
“Because I trust you.”
Rosette smiled at him.
In fact, she had a baseless belief that Joshua wouldn’t harm her, but there was another reason.
‘I thought I shouldn’t keep provoking him.’
If she had continued to defend against his attacks or attacked to restrict his movements, Joshua would have continued to believe that the person in front of him was the Memento.
She thought that if she stopped all defenses and expressed that she had no intention of threatening him, Joshua would realize something was wrong and stop.
It was only possible because she was confident that she could defend herself immediately even if he didn’t stop attacking and aimed for her vital points.
Rosette wasn’t acting recklessly.
Joshua still looked unconvinced after hearing the explanation. He sighed and hugged Rosette again. Then, he buried his face in her shoulder and mumbled.
“I know your skills very well. Even if I had attacked you, you could have blocked it perfectly without a scratch. But don’t ever do that again.”
“…….”
“I’m saying don’t risk your life. Such a thing should never happen again, but if I ever lose my mind and attack you again, rather attack me and block my movements.”
“…….”
“Do you understand? Please say you will.”
“……I understand.”
Rosette patted his back and answered sincerely.
“I won’t do it again. Of course, I’ll make sure such a thing doesn’t happen in the first place.”
Joshua still didn’t seem relieved and continued to hug her tightly. Rosette rolled her eyes around, feeling embarrassed.
The knights sitting around the campfire quickly avoided her gaze and pretended to be busy. Lucas, who was sitting closest, clicked his tongue and sighed deeply as if he had seen something he shouldn’t have.
“Anyway, let’s fill our stomachs first and then discuss what to do.”
Rosette pushed Joshua away, feeling embarrassed, and took various items out of her bag. It was food she had brought plenty of, just in case.
Since she had only brought things that could be stored for a long time, it was all jerky and hardtack. There were no fresh vegetables or meat.
“I’m sorry I only have this.”
“Don’t be sorry! This is wonderful!”
The knights took the ingredients Rosette had taken out and cooked them in their own way. After a while, a soup with a plausible smell and appearance was created.
“There aren’t many ingredients, so the taste might not be great, but it’s better to have something warm than to tear into cold jerky.”
“We haven’t had a proper meal for the past few days, but thanks to the Princess, we’re finally eating something like real food.”
“I’m glad to hear that.”
Rosette looked at her plate, which had a lot of solids, took a small taste, and then passed it back to the knights.
“I ate well before coming here, so I’m not very hungry. Everyone, have more.”
The knights refused at first, but after Joshua nodded, they took Rosette’s plate.
Rosette waited until the knights had finished their soup and then asked.
“By the way, are there any wizards among the remaining subjugation team members?”
The knights looked at each other and then pointed to one side at the same time. A woman wearing a hood, sitting alone in the corner, was startled and pointed to her chest.
“M-Me?”
“Yes. Aren’t you the only wizard here?”
“Well, if you want to get technical, His Highness the Prince is also here…”
“Ah, that’s true.”
Rosette turned to look at the wizard. The wizard was startled when she met her eyes.
“W-Why are you suddenly looking for me…”
“Sir Lane. Shouldn’t you take off your hood since it’s your first time meeting the Princess?”
At the words of a knight, the wizard, Sir Lane, waved her hands in embarrassment.
“No, it’s okay. There’s no need to do that.”
Rosette spoke quickly, but Sir Lane grabbed her hood tightly and took it off as if she had made up her mind. Then, a girl’s face with red hair and a youthful appearance was revealed.
Rosette looked surprised, and she said in a sulky voice.
“Don’t look at me like that. I know what you’re thinking, but I’m older than you, Princess.”
“Ah, that’s a relief then.”
She was worried that they had even drafted minors, but that didn’t seem to be the case.
‘Well, Joshua wouldn’t do that in the first place.’
Rosette nodded and introduced herself.
“I’d like to formally introduce myself. I’m Rosette Adrian.”
Sir Lane nodded.
“I’m Becky Lane.”
After greeting her, Sir Lane, Becky, immediately put her hood back on.
Sir Rotten explained calmly.
“Sir Lane is very skilled. I heard you were in the Magic Tower for a while?”
“The Magic Tower?”
“Magic Tower?”
Rosette and Lucas suddenly showed interest, and Becky flinched.
“W-Well, it’s a bit much to say I was in the Magic Tower. I was only there for a short time. About one or two months?”
“Still, being in the Magic Tower means you’re very skilled.”
Rosette wanted to hear more about the Magic Tower. How she got in, what she did there, and why she left the Magic Tower, which all wizards admired, in just two months.
‘And I want to ask what kind of person Michael Lisher is.’
Perhaps because she felt a suspicious atmosphere from Michael Lisher, she became interested in Becky.
But that wasn’t the problem right now. Rosette returned to the original topic.
“Then, do you know anything about large-scale defense magic or space separation magic?”
“Ah, I know about it.”
Becky continued to look around and stammered. Her expression was not clearly visible because her face was covered by the hood, but from her stiff movements, it was clear that she was quite nervous.
“Then, can you cast that magic yourself?”
“B-Before that, can I ask why you want to know that? You don’t seem to know the rules here, Princess, but that can be a very rude question.”
“Sir Lane.”
Someone scolded Becky, but she stubbornly said.
“Wizards generally have personal tendencies and don’t interact much with each other. It’s also cautious to ask other wizards about their skills or what they’re researching.”
Well, looking at the Magic Tower Lord, Michael Lisher, that didn’t seem to be the case.
Not only that, but the wizards around her, such as Joshua and Celine, were still sociable, so she didn’t realize it. Even the magic students who took classes together at the academy were like that.
But if Becky’s words were true, then it was Rosette’s fault. She readily apologized.
“I’m sorry. I made a mistake. I should have told you the situation first.”
“The situation?”
“What situation are you talking about?”
Not only Becky but also the other knights showed interest.
Rosette looked around at them and began to explain.
“You may or may not know, but this space we are in is separated from the real space.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
Sir Rotten sighed, holding his forehead.
“I thought something external was involved. No matter how much we walked, we couldn’t see the base camp, and we kept going around in the same place. We didn’t see any people or animals, and only monsters kept pouring out from who knows where.”
“Someone is artificially trapping you in this space with magic. That’s why it was difficult for me to find you at first.”
Rosette recalled the time she wandered through the forest with Lucas and continued.
“When I went to a nearby village, they said that the subjugation team had visited until recently. There were no such traces in other villages. So I thought something had happened in this area.”
“…….”
“But Pipi couldn’t find Silver’s traces nearby. Sir Lane knows, but familiars can sense each other’s energy even if they are quite far apart.”
Becky nodded quietly.
“Silver wouldn’t have gone so far that Pipi couldn’t find him, and I didn’t even want to imagine that something serious had happened to Joshua, His Highness the Prince. Then…”
Lucas proudly interjected.
“That’s when I came up with a really perfect idea!”
Rosette nodded with a smile on her face without realizing it.
“That’s right. Lucas asked if there was any magic that could hide the subjugation team without being noticed by anyone. It would have been difficult to leave far away with the injured, including Daniel.”
Rosette’s face became serious again.
“So I looked at the flow of mana and found a space separated from the surroundings. I made a slight gap and came inside, and that’s how I was able to meet you.”
