189. Escape
May 07, 2024
“Father and Sister are in danger! While we’re standing here, someone might target them!”
Rosette’s words resonated not only with Joshua. Lukas and Daniel, who had been straining their ears from a distance, also jumped up in surprise at her exclamation.
“What are you talking about? Father and Isabel are in danger?”
Rosette quickly explained to Lukas, who rushed over.
“It’s exactly as I said. That person will target not only Daniel and Joshua but also everyone around me.”
It wouldn’t be just the Adrian family. Next would be Celine, Melody, Joseph, Joanne, and Chris Kellen, among others.
He must have planned to eliminate everyone around Rosette that she cared about, right before her eyes.
So that the only person she could rely on would be Michael Röscher, or so that Rosette, not wanting to lose anyone else precious, would have no choice but to take his hand willingly.
“Who exactly?”
“Michael Röscher.”
“What? That Magic Tower bastard?”
Even Daniel didn’t scold Lukas for his harsh language this time. Instead, he asked calmly.
“Rose, are you saying that Marquis Röscher is targeting them?”
“It’s a long story.”
Rosette stood up abruptly and quickly walked towards the monument she had discovered earlier. Silver, at her signal, grabbed Becky’s collar, who was still trembling with fear, and dragged her along.
Lukas, realizing the wolf’s intention, simply hoisted her onto his shoulders. Becky was startled and struggled, shouting to be put down, but he didn’t even bat an eye.
“Then tell us as we go. Father and Sister’s matter is also about Daniel and me.”
“Okay.”
Rosette replied with a sigh. She wanted to resolve it alone if possible, but as Lukas said, this was something that involved everyone in Adrian. It wasn’t something she could hide.
This time, at Joshua’s nod, Silver nudged Daniel’s thigh with his snout as he limped along. Understanding the message, Daniel quietly climbed onto Silver’s back.
They decided to take the rest of the group with them, just in case. However, they kept a distance between the two groups so they wouldn’t overhear the conversation.
Rosette walked briskly, explaining as she went.
“This barrier was created by the Magic Tower and the Magic Tower Lord.”
“What, really?”
“Yes. Sir Lane confirmed it. The reason Sir Lane couldn’t use magic after coming here is also because of that.”
Lukas protested to Becky, asking if it was true, and she reluctantly nodded.
“My head is spinning; can you put me down first……”
“What makes you think I’ll let you down when you might run off? You’re not secretly in league with the Magic Tower, are you?”
“That’s not true! Don’t involve me!”
“Okay, then.”
Even amidst all this, Rosette continued her explanation.
“Michael Röscher’s target in this matter was probably Daniel and Joshua.”
“Why those two?”
“It’s hard for me to believe, but it’s probably because of me.”
She also told them what Michael had said at the party. The three men listened with serious expressions and, surprisingly, quickly accepted it.
“That bastard is capable of it. I knew it from the moment he threatened you with your life. He’s not right in the head. He’s crazy.”
Instead of Lukas, who was trembling with anger, Daniel asked.
“So that’s why you came all the way here.”
“That’s true. Of course, I was also bothered by the fact that I hadn’t heard from you since you were injured.”
Rosette, having reached the monument, stopped walking.
“This is a really unlikely assumption, but I think Michael might have been behind the appearance of the monsters in the first place.”
“That’s impossible, Rose. No matter how powerful the Magic Tower Lord is, he can’t control monsters. How could a mere human summon or control monsters? This is just a terrible coincidence.”
“I wish that were the case.”
Rosette’s eyes scanned the monument.
She still couldn’t read anything beyond fragmented words. However, the ominousness and oppressiveness of those few familiar words were considerable.
Sacrifice, death, blood…….
The reason Rosette knew these words in ancient language was all thanks to Marquis Dallas. She had seen these words when she was learning the magic to turn back time in preparation for an emergency.
What was this monument built for? What role did it play?
She didn’t want to touch it until she knew for sure. Even though she guessed that breaking it would break the barrier, she left it alone and turned away for that reason.
Because she didn’t know what would happen if she touched it carelessly.
‘But there’s no time to hesitate.’
Rosette clenched her fists.
“It doesn’t matter how or why the monsters reappeared. What’s really important is that Michael Röscher tried to use them to kill Daniel, Joshua, and even the subjugation force.”
“…….”
“And the next target will be Father and Sister, who are left in the capital. Or maybe…….”
They might have followed Rosette and Lukas, who had secretly headed north, to find them, so they might be nearby.
If so, would it be fortunate that they were far from Michael in the capital? Or not.
‘Did Michael follow us all the way here?’
If this barrier was really Michael’s doing, he would have realized it was her doing when Rosette broke through it.
Perhaps he had followed her all the way here to catch her.
“Anyway, we need to quickly……”
She was about to say they should leave.
Suddenly, a thunderous sound like lightning struck, and sparks flew from the empty air. The transparent magical barrier, invisible to the naked eye, briefly revealed itself and then disappeared.
“What is this?”
It was Daniel who answered Lukas’s question. He got off Silver’s back and placed his hand in the air where the barrier had just been visible.
“It’s Father’s mana.”
“Father’s?”
“Dad’s?”
He tried to explain calmly to his surprised younger siblings. But he couldn’t completely hide his trembling voice.
“He must have come all the way here to find you. Unlike other knights, Father is sensitive to mana and knows how to handle it, so he must have noticed the barrier. He must have known we were inside too. He’s probably trying to break it.”
Daniel looked up at the hazy sky. The barrier, which had clearly surrounded them in a dome shape, had completely disappeared again.
“Why did he stop?”
He had seen Duke Adrian up close the longest among the four siblings. He knew his swordsmanship, the mana he wielded, and his personality well.
The Duke Adrian he knew would have tried to break the barrier no matter what when he knew that three of his children, and even Joshua, were trapped here.
Even if his arm was torn off, even if he squeezed all the mana out of his body and his heart burned, he would have taken care of his children first without hesitation.
But to only touch it once as if to confirm and then be silent. Something was wrong.
At that moment, Becky trembled and gagged.
“Hey, what are you doing? Are you making a fuss just because you were hanging upside down for a bit? Don’t you dare throw up on my clothes!”
Lukas hurriedly put Becky down, but she couldn’t come to her senses. Her legs had no strength, like a newborn deer, and she couldn’t stand properly, collapsing to the ground.
“……He’s here.”
“What?”
“That person is here.”
At the same time, Rosette and Joshua’s eyes met in the air. Joshua, uncharacteristically, cursed and stood next to Rosette.
“That guy, the Magic Tower Lord, seems to be here.”
Rosette’s face turned pale in an instant.
“Then……”
Outside, Duke Adrian and Michael must be confronting each other?
She didn’t know exactly how advanced Michael’s magic was. However, since he had taken over the position of Magic Tower Lord, she could guess that his magical skills were among the best in the empire.
Duke Adrian was also one of the best. She never thought he would be easily defeated by Michael.
But why was she so uneasy?
Rosette instinctively glared at the monument with her sword.
“We have to get out of here.”
[Beep!]
If she wasn’t careful, everyone might get hurt, Pipi warned.
“I’m going to cast a defensive spell. Something big and strong enough to protect everyone. There will be an impact, but you won’t be seriously injured.”
[Bee……]
“Pipi, can you help me?”
[Beep! Beep!]
As soon as Pipi flapped its wings vigorously, as if telling her to leave it to him, Silver also raised his snout high and howled. It was a sign that he would help too.
“Thank you, let’s go then.”
Rosette warned the others not to be surprised and then cast a defensive magic circle.
After confirming that the magic circle was firmly in place, she infused her sword with mana and struck the monument.
Another roar was heard, and sparks flew in the air. This time, the barrier was revealed more clearly than before.
‘I can do it. No, I have to do it.’
Rosette swung her sword diligently. Joshua, who had been watching quietly, also infused his sword with mana and helped her.
Cold sweat dripped from her forehead. Like when she had released all her mana to save Duke Adrian before her mana core had properly settled in her childhood, there was a pain in her stomach as if it were being squeezed.
‘Just a little more!’
It was when Rosette, with Pipi’s help, released all the mana she had as if she were going to explode and struck the monument.
The monument began to split in two, and the barrier that had been opaquely surrounding them also began to crack.
A creepy sound was heard. Becky couldn’t bear it any longer and covered her ears, shaking her head.
This time, Rosette simply stuck her sword into the cracked gap of the monument.
With an explosive roar, the monument completely shattered, and the cracked barrier also began to break.
Sharp fragments like glass covered the people, but as soon as they touched the defensive magic that Rosette had cast, they turned to dust and disappeared.
Another sight began to appear through the gap where the barrier had been broken.
Rosette instinctively looked for Duke Adrian. And soon found him.
“Father!”
Her beloved father was staring at someone with one arm covered in blood.
