36. The Meaning of Family (4)
2023.12.06.
The carriage came to a stop. Daniel was the first to get out and helped his three younger siblings descend.
Lucas bounced up and down as he watched Rosette get out last.
“Where should we go first?”
“Let’s eat first.”
Daniel expertly led his siblings to a restaurant they frequented. The knights of the Adrian family quietly followed behind.
As soon as the four children entered, the eyes of everyone inside were fixed on them. The three platinum-blonde siblings were so famous that everyone recognized them quickly.
“Aren’t those the children of Duke Adrian’s family?”
“I think so. But who is that pink-haired girl…?”
“That must be the youngest daughter Duke Adrian adopted a few months ago.”
Rosette, feeling the attention, shrank back. Lucas shielded her protectively behind him. Daniel quickly spoke to the manager.
“We would like a quiet place where we can dine alone.”
“I will guide you right away.”
Thanks to everyone’s consideration, Rosette was able to enjoy her meal comfortably.
Afterward, the four children wandered around the shopping district, buying various things. People’s eyes were still on them, but Daniel handled it with practiced ease.
After about three hours, the servants who had followed the four children had their hands full of large bags, mostly filled with Rosette’s purchases.
The three siblings had been buying things as if they were competing to see who could buy Rosette the things she liked the most.
“Still, I’m the best! I was the one who suggested we come out!”
Lucas boasted as he walked towards the place where the carriage was waiting. Rosette just giggled. Lucas emphasized again.
“How about it, shorty? I’m the best, right?”
Having spent time with Lucas, Rosette had roughly figured out his personality.
Though he might be embarrassed to say it himself, Lucas, who had always been the youngest, cherished his new younger sister. Moreover, he loved playing the role of an older brother.
Rosette decided to give him the answer he wanted.
“Yes, you’re the best, Oppa!” [Oppa is a Korean term used by a younger girl to address an older brother or male friend.]
She even gave him a thumbs-up for good measure.
At the same time, Lucas’s ears turned red. He scratched the back of his head.
“Well, I was just doing what any older brother would do. If you want to go out again, just tell me. I’ll talk to Father for you.”
“Yes.”
“Then let’s go back now. We have to unpack the presents!”
“Yes!”
Rosette was walking down the street, playfully holding hands with Lucas, when a familiar voice reached her ears from not far away.
“Thank you so much, Daddy!”
Where had she heard that before? Rosette was trying to figure out who the owner of the voice was when she heard another voice.
“I’m glad you like it. I gave you the dress you wanted, so you need to pay more attention in etiquette class.”
A voice that wasn’t too low but was still sharp. It was a slightly younger voice than she remembered, but how could she forget it?
‘This person is…!’
Her body reacted first. Her whole body trembled, and her heart pounded. Goosebumps rose on her spine.
Rosette instinctively shrank back and looked in the direction of the voice.
Sure enough, there stood a familiar red-haired man. Unlike Duke Adrian, who was a knight, he had a slender build.
Now she could be sure.
‘Marquis Dallas…’
And in front of Marquis Dallas was a girl with curly blonde hair, wearing a wide-brimmed pink hat and smiling brightly.
Elisha Dallas. The child Rosette had always envied.
At that moment, Rosette was as shaken as when she had heard that Joshua had come to the Adrian mansion. No, she was even more nervous than then. At least she hadn’t met Joshua directly.
‘I don’t want to…’
After returning to the past, Rosette had hoped not to meet Marquis Dallas. She wanted to avoid him as much as possible and run far away.
However, after accidentally meeting Duke Adrian and becoming Rosette Adrian, she knew that she could not avoid meeting Marquis Dallas.
Still, it was okay. She thought she had forgotten all about the past while living with her family.
But the memories of the past seemed to be deeply engraved in her mind. As soon as she saw Marquis Dallas, the memories of the past flashed through her mind.
The way he had scolded her for not being able to do even this, the way he had raised his large hand high in the air, the way he had sneered at her.
At the same time, Elisha’s face also came to mind.
The way she had wrinkled her nose, saying that she smelled vulgar, the way she had deliberately tripped Rosette and laughed, the way she had sneered that her hair was dull and strange.
At that moment, Marquis Dallas looked in her direction.
The moment her eyes met his snake-like green eyes, Rosette trembled and hid behind Lucas. She felt as if Marquis Dallas would grab her if she didn’t.
“Hey, shorty! What’s wrong?”
“…”
Rosette couldn’t answer. She felt nauseous and wanted to vomit.
As her face turned pale and she covered her mouth, Lucas fussed over her.
“Hyung! Shorty is acting strange.” [Hyung is a Korean term used by a younger boy to address an older brother or male friend.]
“Why suddenly… Rose?”
“Oppa, let’s go back to the carriage quickly.”
Rosette walked as quickly as she could, supported by her three siblings. They passed by Marquis Dallas and Elisha.
Feeling the commotion, Elisha stared at her with wide eyes.
Rosette desperately avoided that curious gaze and ran.
She barely managed to get into the carriage with Daniel’s help.
“Ugh.”
Rosette began to throw up. Thinking that she couldn’t dirty the carriage, she hurriedly tried to cover her mouth, but it was no use.
“Hey, hey. Our youngest. What’s wrong? Are you not feeling well?”
Lucas patted Rosette’s back with a pale face. Daniel, who had quickly gotten into the carriage, ordered the coachman to return to the mansion immediately. Isabel took out a handkerchief from her bosom and handed it to her.
It was a handkerchief that looked expensive and soft to the touch. Rosette couldn’t bring herself to accept it, but Isabel forcibly pressed the handkerchief into her hand.
“Just use it. You can wash it.”
“The carriage will get dirty… I’m sorry…”
“Is the carriage getting dirty the problem now? You idiot!”
Lucas was now on the verge of tears. Rosette had no choice but to cover her mouth with the handkerchief.
The carriage arrived at the mansion much faster than when they had gone out to Roam Street.
By the time the carriage reached the mansion, Rosette had stopped vomiting. To be exact, she had vomited so much that there was nothing left to vomit.
Rosette kept insisting that she was okay, but her three siblings didn’t believe her. Her face was still pale.
Before the slowing carriage had come to a complete stop, Lucas burst open the door and started making a fuss.
“Call a doctor! Shorty is sick!”
He jumped out of the carriage and struggled to carry Rosette on his back. But it was too much for him. Rosette was smaller than her peers, but she was only two years younger than Lucas.
Instead of him struggling, Daniel picked up Rosette and headed to her room. Rosette struggled to get down.
“I’m really okay…”
“You’re not okay. Your face is completely white. If you keep struggling like that, Daniel Oppa will have a harder time, so stay still.”
“Nuna is right. Your face looks like flour dough.”
Instead of saying anything more, Rosette quietly wrapped her arms around Daniel’s neck. As soon as Daniel arrived at her room and laid Rosette on the bed, the family doctor rushed in anxiously.
“I heard the little lady is unwell.”
“Our youngest, our youngest…!”
Lucas, who had been cheerful all along, was now sobbing.
“She, she! Vomited!”
Isabel pushed his cheek with her palm.
“Be quiet.”
In the end, Daniel gave a detailed explanation.
“We were so excited that we fed her all sorts of things, and it seems she ended up having a stomach upset. Her complexion suddenly worsened, and she started vomiting. She threw up everything she ate, even her stomach acid.”
Rosette wanted to argue that it wasn’t true. She had eaten a little too much, but there was nothing wrong with the food her three siblings had given her.
She had just been surprised to see Marquis Dallas and Elisha.
But she couldn’t tell them that story, so she ended up saying nothing.
“Let me take a look at her first.”
The family doctor carefully began to press on Rosette’s stomach.
“Does it hurt here?”
Rosette shook her head. The family doctor continued to press, changing positions.
“How about here? Or here?”
Rosette just kept shaking her head, and the family doctor looked puzzled.
“That’s strange. It doesn’t seem like she has a stomachache.”
“Then why did shorty throw up?”
The family doctor muttered in a slightly unsure tone.
“Sometimes, if you eat food that you’re not used to, your stomach can be surprised, but you’ve been eating a balanced diet without being picky lately, so that’s unlikely. If that’s the case, then a psychological factor is probably the biggest cause.”
“Psychological factor? What’s that?”
“Could it be that the youngest lady was nervous or surprised?”
“That didn’t happen! We had a great time! We walked around Roam Street!”
“Hmm. Miss, please excuse me again for a moment.”
This time, the family doctor touched Rosette’s neck and shoulders.
“Her muscles are tense. It seems like she was surprised. Miss, did anything happen in the city?”
When she shook her head again, Lucas pounded his chest in frustration.
“Why are you doing this?”
Daniel smiled and pulled Lucas behind him.
“Let’s forget about the cause for now. Is she okay now?”
“Yes. Now that she seems to have calmed down, I don’t think she’ll have any more problems. It doesn’t seem like gastroenteritis or indigestion, so you don’t have to worry. However, let’s keep an eye on her for the next day or two.”
“I understand.”
“Just in case, she should only have light soup for dinner tonight.”
“Then shorty will be hungry?”
“But that’s better than being sick, right?”
Lucas pouted as Isabel spoke sullenly.
The family doctor, smiling at the two of them, left the room, saying to call if they needed anything. But the three siblings didn’t leave and stayed in their places.
Rosette swallowed hard as she looked at the three pairs of eyes staring down at her.
“I’m okay now.”
Daniel brushed Rosette’s bangs, which were slightly damp with cold sweat, back.
“I know. But we want to be here. Would it be a burden? Should we leave?”
Rosette shook her head, clutching the blanket tightly. It was a bit of a burden, but she liked having the three of them there.
