62. The Appearance of Biological Parents (2)
2024.01.01.
“Are you really going to meet them?”
Lukas, having heard the news that Rosette’s biological parents had appeared and might take her away, came to Rosette’s room and asked anxiously.
Rosette was just as anxious. She sighed as Joan braided her hair.
“I don’t know.”
“Father said he would respect your opinion. If you don’t want to, he’ll just send them away. Just say you don’t want to.”
“But…”
“They’re the parents who abandoned you! You’ve never even met them, so you’ve never missed them, right?”
“I did say that.”
“What? Does that mean you’ve changed your mind now?”
“…….”
Rosette pressed her lips together and looked in the mirror. Her expression in the mirror looked gloomy.
‘I thought I didn’t miss them.’
But maybe that was just self-hypnosis. She must have been comforting herself that way because she knew her parents wouldn’t come anyway.
It was a miracle for children in orphanages to have their biological parents visit. They would cry, apologize, and hug the child, saying they could be together now. It was a miracle that Rosette from her past life never had.
Even when she went to the Dallas family, she only thought about becoming a family with them, never expecting that the family who abandoned her would come looking for her.
But now that she could actually meet the people called her parents, her heart felt strange.
“I just wanted to see them once.”
“Then you’re just going to see them? You’re going to keep living here, right?”
“…….”
“Rosette.”
“I will.”
After thinking it over, Rosette spoke quite firmly.
“This is my home.”
Rosette had heard from Duke Adrian last night that there was a high probability that the people who came to find her were her real biological parents. He said that when they compared the mana [magical energy] contained in each other’s hair, the reaction was very strong.
Also, her biological parents wanted to take Rosette with them. They were going to leave for the Ivelin Kingdom, and if she followed them, it would be difficult to see the Adrian people.
Rosette was a little wistful at first. But her conclusion was one.
“Adrian is my family.”
Her family was neither the parents who gave birth to her nor the Dallas family who took her in the past.
Adrian. That was where she belonged.
But she decided to meet her parents because she was curious about what kind of people they were. Just once, it seemed okay to find out what kind of people they were.
“Rosette.”
Lukas sniffled and hugged Rosette.
Rosette barely pulled him away and headed to the drawing room.
As she entered, a couple dressed quite smartly stood up. They looked to be in their late 20s or early 30s.
“Rose.”
The woman, who had the same hair color as Rosette, sobbed as she took her hand.
“You’ve grown up so beautifully. You’ve grown up so beautifully.”
“Yes.”
“Do you remember your mother?”
“…No.”
“Well, it was a long time ago.”
“…….”
Then the man, who was said to be her father, greeted her. He had ordinary brown hair and blue eyes.
“This father missed you so much too. You look so much like your mother.”
Well. Rosette tilted her head, looking at the woman.
Objectively speaking, Rosette couldn’t find any similarities except for the same hair color.
Besides.
‘It’s awkward.’
She had imagined her biological parents coming to find her someday. It was the night when the mischievous Will’s biological parents visited the orphanage.
At that time, Rosette felt a lump in her chest as she imagined her parents hugging her tightly. She thought she would cry her eyes out if she met them.
But tears didn’t come out. She didn’t feel particularly happy either.
She just felt awkward.
Her parents were so happy to see her, but why didn’t she feel anything?
‘I miss Dad, my sister, and my brothers.’
She wanted these people to leave quickly and have a delicious dinner with her family. Silly stories would be exchanged at the table throughout the dinner. Still, it would be a pleasant time.
Rosette spent time just nodding along to her parents’ words.
Then, the woman suggested.
“How about going on a picnic with your mom and dad for a while?”
“A picnic?”
This time the man chimed in.
“Yes. I heard there’s a lake near the capital, let’s go boating there.”
“That…”
Still, it was her parents’ suggestion, so she couldn’t refuse. Rosette mumbled vaguely.
“I need my dad’s permission.”
The man burst into a hearty laugh.
“Your dad is here, why do you need permission?”
“I mean my current dad, Duke Adrian’s permission.”
“Ah.”
The two were taken aback but soon agreed.
“Well, anyway, the Duke is your guardian now, so you have to get permission.”
Rosette thought that if she went to Duke Adrian, he would just refuse.
But he looked at Rosette’s face and nodded.
“I understand. It would be good to spend time with your parents.”
“But…”
Rosette only opened her mouth and then followed the couple into the carriage.
Duke Adrian offered to provide the ducal carriage, but the couple refused. So she rode in the carriage they had come in.
“Let’s have lunch together while we’re out. What do you like?”
“I like everything except shrimp.”
“Okay. There’s a delicious steakhouse nearby, so we can go there.”
“Yes.”
Even now, in the carriage, the couple mainly talked, and Rosette listened quietly.
Then, Rosette, who was staring blankly out the window, noticed something strange.
‘Where is this?’
She hadn’t been to many places in the capital. But she had heard that the lake was frequented by nobles, so the road was well paved.
But the road they were going on now was narrow and bumpy. The carriage she was riding in wasn’t very good, so it bounced even more.
Rosette looked outside and asked, a little puzzled.
“We’re going to the lake, right?”
“Of course. Why do you ask all of a sudden?”
“It’s nothing.”
Rosette only fidgeted with her fingers. She couldn’t help but think that she wanted to quickly finish seeing the lake and return home.
‘I’m tired.’
As she thought that and let the woman’s words flow in one ear and out the other, the woman closed the window and asked.
“Do you know what your name means? I mean the name Rosette.”
Rosette perked up her ears.
“My name?”
“Yes. Before you were born, we decided to name you Rosette if you were a pink-haired girl who looked like me.”
“…?”
“Actually, you had pink hair, and we named you Rosette.”
At that moment, Rosette saw the woman’s smile as eerie.
* * *
Duke Adrian was looking at the documents with a troubled heart. But he couldn’t concentrate on his work at all.
His mind was only filled with thoughts of Rosette.
‘I wonder if she’s shy.’
She had become much brighter and more sociable than when he first saw her, but Rosette was still awkward with people she met for the first time. Even if they were her biological parents, she would be uncomfortable.
‘I should have gone with her, even if she found it strange.’
He was regretting it a little when it happened. Without knocking, the door burst open and his aide ran in.
“My lord!”
“What’s wrong? Without knocking…”
“We just compared the hair of the person who claimed to be the young lady’s biological father with the young lady’s hair. Celine said that the match between the biological mother’s hair and the young lady’s hair was too high.”
“So?”
“They are not family.”
Duke Adrian jumped up from his chair.
“What?”
“They are complete strangers with no blood relation. Celine re-examined the biological mother’s hair and said that it seemed to have been artificially created using the young lady’s hair.”
“Why would they do that…”
After thinking for a moment, Duke Adrian hurriedly left the office.
“Tell them to prepare the horses. Quickly!”
* * *
“…What did you just say?”
“Your hair color resembles a rose, so Rosette. That’s why your nickname is Rose.”
“…….”
“We put a note in your clothes that said Rosette. Fortunately, they saw it and named you that.”
“Ah…”
Rosette realized it at that moment.
‘These people are fake.’
Rosette’s name was given to her by the people at the orphanage. They all said it proudly.
Rosette had never doubted that they were lying. If Rosette’s name had been given to her by her parents, they would have said so.
Maybe these people had some wrong information and were spouting nonsense.
‘Of course, it could be a lie made up by real parents who want to get closer to me, but…’
The feeling wasn’t good.
If these people were fake, why would they come to Rosette and put on this act? For what purpose?
Money didn’t seem to be the goal, were they trying to kidnap her and do something?
The reason didn’t matter. First of all, getting out of this carriage and returning was the priority.
Rosette tried to speak calmly, pretending not to have noticed everything.
“I see. I’ve always wondered why my name was Rosette, but now I know for sure. I only guessed that it was taken from a rose.”
Rosette slowly moved towards the door.
“But I’m getting motion sickness, so could you stop the carriage for a moment?”
“Oh, that’s going to be difficult.”
The woman smiled slyly. Rosette sensed that she had noticed everything and tried to open the carriage door.
But the handle wouldn’t turn.
‘Why is this…’
She tried to open the door with magic, but the magic didn’t work. Rosette realized belatedly.
‘The carriage has a nullification spell on it.’
It seemed like they had prepared thoroughly. Judging by the high level of nullification magic.
‘Of course, I can break it. But I can’t guarantee what will happen after that.’
If they were this meticulous, they would be prepared for Rosette to escape.
What should I do, what should I do?
Rosette bit her lip, and the woman, who had stopped acting, said coldly.
“You better not try anything funny. Unless you want to see something nasty.”
“What are you going to do to me?”
“Well. Should I keep it a secret, or what?”
The woman giggled, looking down at her long nails.
“There’s a strange nobleman in another kingdom. He has a hobby of collecting children with magical abilities, and it would be quite lucrative to sell you to that nobleman. You’re a genius, right?”
“What does that nobleman do with me?”
The woman shrugged.
“I don’t know.”
Rosette clenched her fists tightly. She couldn’t just stand still like this.
‘Pipi.’
At Rosette’s call, Pipi, who was hiding in her pocket, wriggled.
‘I’m going to open the window with magic, so go and call Dad. Okay?’
Pipi pecked her thigh with its beak instead of answering.
Rosette tapped her pocket with her palm, giving the signal.
One, two, three.
“Now!”
Rosette gathered mana and broke the window. Pipi jumped out of the pocket and flew out of the window with force.
