74. Sword Tournament
The Duke’s hand moved naturally again.
“So.”
“Yes.”
Rosette giggled. Duke Adrian smiled back at her.
“But Father, we can go watch Daniel’s match, right?”
“We’ll see.”
“Can’t we? I’ve been waiting for the main rounds to start.”
Rosette, who had been looking forward to this since the preliminaries, drooped her eyebrows in disappointment.
Daniel explained.
“There are so many matches in the main rounds. It’s a tournament style, and 32 people made it to the main rounds for my event.”
For reference, the event Daniel was participating in was only open to those aged 19 to 24 who had come of age.
“If there are 32 people, how many matches are there?”
Lukas counted on his fingers.
“Five. Assuming Daniel wins, of course. Though he definitely will.”
Rosette answered immediately. Lukas widened his eyes in surprise.
“Hey, how did you know that so quickly?”
“It’s basic knowledge.”
Rosette muttered somewhat sheepishly, and Lukas exclaimed in admiration.
“Amazing, our little one.”
“Anyway, it won’t be over in a day. It’ll probably take three days. You can’t come to watch me for three whole days, can you?”
“I’m fine with it.”
“Me too.”
“Me too!”
Faced with the positive reactions of his three younger siblings, Daniel looked at Duke Adrian with a troubled expression.
“What should we do, Father?”
The Duke replied simply.
“Let’s watch them all.”
“Really?”
“You promised, Father!”
“Yes.”
And so, Rosette, Lukas, and Isabel went to watch Daniel’s first match a week later.
“Wow.”
Rosette and Lukas, who had entered the VIP seats, stuck to the large glass window as if drawn by magnets. The view of the stadium was very close through the glass.
“Here, it’s safe, and we can see Hyung’s [older brother’s] match up close. Right, little one?”
“Yeah.”
“Then let’s go see Hyung.”
The three children headed to the waiting room to see Daniel. Daniel was visible inside the waiting room, talking to people.
“Oppa! [Term of endearment for older brother or male friend]”
Rosette was the first to run towards Daniel. Then, the men around Daniel showed interest in her.
“Oh, Daniel. Is this your youngest sister?”
“She’s cute.”
The men surrounding Rosette were as tall as Daniel. Rosette shrank under the gaze of the newly-adult men.
“Hello, Princess. I’m Daniel’s friend… Ugh!”
Just then, as one man was being friendly to Rosette, Daniel elbowed him roughly in the back, uncharacteristically.
“Don’t approach my sister. Rose is getting scared.”
“No, what did I do…”
“Everyone, go away.”
Daniel quickly waved his hand. Rosette mustered her courage and said.
“I’m okay!”
“Huh?”
“Are they all Daniel Oppa’s friends? If they’re Oppa’s friends, then they’re also my oppa…”
“What are you saying, Rose.”
Daniel smiled gently.
“You only have me and Lukas as your oppas.”
Rosette rolled her eyes before answering.
“Okay, I understand.”
“Anyway, did you come to cheer me on?”
“Yes!”
Rosette received a well-wrapped package from Joanne and handed it to Daniel.
“What’s this?”
“Um… please open it.”
As if sensing something, Daniel smiled and opened the package. He took out the handkerchief inside and smiled even brighter.
“Don’t tell me our youngest embroidered this herself?”
“Yes.”
Rosette muttered in a barely audible voice.
“I wanted to embroider the Adrian family crest, but it was too difficult for me. So, Mrs. Noir taught me how to embroider roses.”
“So that’s why it’s a pink rose. Did you embroider it to resemble you?”
“It’s not like that!”
Daniel burst out laughing. His laughter was still as clear and innocent as a child’s.
The cynical adult he would become after injuring his leg was nowhere to be found.
“Thank you, Rose. I feel like I’ll have strength thanks to you.”
Daniel neatly folded the handkerchief and put it in his pocket.
A few steps away, his friends shouted, “Wow! I’m jealous! Someone’s lucky to have a cute younger sister who makes them handkerchiefs!”
Lukas wasn’t one to be outdone and questioned Rosette.
“Hey, what about me?”
“Yours is coming up.”
“So, you’re saying I’m getting one too?”
“Yeah.”
“Nice.”
Lukas stepped back in a good mood. Then, he bumped fists with Daniel.
“Hyung, you have to win. Protect the Adrian family’s honor.”
“What honor.”
Isabel interjected.
“Oppa, just do what you always do. That’s enough.”
“Yeah. Thanks, Bel.”
“Then we’ll go watch.”
As the three children were about to say goodbye to Daniel and leave the waiting room…
“Oppa!”
Rosette flinched at the voice coming from the entrance. It was a familiar voice.
Turning her head, Elisha Dallas was entering as expected.
Rosette instinctively turned her head to where Elisha was heading. Seeing the familiar red-haired man, she unconsciously shrank her shoulders.
‘It’s Alex Dallas.’
The eldest son of Marquis Dallas, and Rosette’s former adoptive brother.
Compared to the other family members, Alex Dallas hadn’t harmed her much. He didn’t hit her like Marquis Dallas, nor did he torment her like Elisha.
However, whenever he encountered Rosette, he would make a face as if he had seen something very dirty.
Whenever Rosette saw his usually expressionless face contort, she felt like she had really become trash.
“Oppa, I’m here!”
“Elisha.”
“I even made a handkerchief for Oppa.”
Lukas, noticing Rosette staring blankly at the Dallas siblings, shook her shoulder strangely.
“Hey? What’s wrong?”
“Nothing…”
Isabel keenly read her expression and whispered.
“Rose, did something happen with the Dallas Young Lady at the tea party last time?”
“What?”
Lukas was surprised, and Daniel was also inwardly surprised as he waited for Rosette’s answer.
Rosette quickly denied it.
“No, nothing special happened.”
Isabel’s eyes narrowed.
“So, something did happen.”
“No! Nothing happened…”
Rosette was still clumsy at lying. Moreover, with the three siblings watching with fiery eyes, even that lie wouldn’t come out.
“It’s nothing much.”
“Then tell me about that ‘nothing much’.”
“Really…”
Just then, as if hearing the commotion, Elisha turned her head towards the four siblings. Finding Rosette, she frowned slightly, then smiled and approached.
“Oh my, it’s Princess Adrian? And the others are here too.”
Unlike the last time when she left in anger, she had a rather welcoming face.
‘No, she’s pretending to be welcoming.’
At least Rosette could recognize the fake mask Elisha was wearing.
However, it didn’t matter much how Elisha appeared to others. There was something else that bothered her.
‘Why is she suddenly acting friendly with me?’
Given Elisha’s personality, she shouldn’t even be dealing with Rosette.
While Rosette was wondering, Isabel stepped close to Elisha.
“Young Lady Dallas, it’s been a while.”
“It has, Princess. It’s been over five years. How have you been?”
“I’ve been well, thank you. How have you been, Young Lady?”
“Yes, I’ve been well too.”
Isabel smiled sweetly. It was a warm smile, unlike the cold expression she always wore.
“I happen to have something I’m curious about regarding Young Lady Dallas.”
“Yes?”
“What kind of conversation did you have with my sister?”
“What… conversation?”
“No, just. I’m curious.”
“What did the Princess say?”
Isabel didn’t say anything and just smiled. Elisha muttered with a somewhat anxious face.
“I didn’t say anything special. I just said I wanted to see the Princess’s familiar, and the Princess refused.”
“Ah. I see.”
Isabel nodded slightly and leaned in to mutter something. Rosette and the others couldn’t hear it, but Elisha seemed to flinch slightly.
“Ah, I understand.”
“I’m glad you understand. Then, Rose. Let’s go.”
“Yes? Ah, yes.”
Rosette was about to follow Isabel out when…
“Wait a moment, Princess.”
Elisha approached them. Rosette thought she was going to say something to Isabel, who she had just been talking to. But Elisha surprisingly stood in front of Rosette.
“I’d like to invite you to a tea time soon.”
Rosette unknowingly asked foolishly.
“Me? You, Young Lady?”
“Yes.”
She thankfully didn’t ask the stupid question, ‘Why?’ As if reading Rosette’s mind, Elisha smiled.
“As an apology for the rudeness last time.”
“Ah, yes.”
“I’ll send an invitation. I hope you’ll come.”
“Yes, I understand.”
With those words, Elisha approached Alex Dallas.
Rosette blankly watched the two Dallas siblings before leaving the waiting room at Isabel’s urging to return quickly.
“You, you’re not going to go, are you?”
“Of course not.”
Rosette answered immediately.
“Good, you’ve thought it through.”
Isabel carefully stroked Rosette’s hair.
“More than that, Unnie [older sister], Oppa. Can I go sightseeing for a bit?”
“Shall I go with you?”
Rosette shook her head at Lukas’s suggestion.
“It’s okay. Joseph and Kellan are here.”
“So, this oppa is no longer needed.”
“No, that’s not what I meant…!”
Lukas burst out laughing at the flustered Rosette.
“I’m just kidding. The two of them know the way, so have a good time sightseeing.”
“Yes. Then let’s go.”
Rosette began to wander around the stadium with Joseph and Chris.
People who recognized her pink hair would whisper or point at her. Because she had left for the territory immediately after the collapse incident, there were many people who had only heard rumors about Rosette.
Rosette was initially scared, but she relaxed when she realized that people were surprisingly friendly.
“But you know, even if it’s Joseph, aren’t you disappointed, Kellan?”
“Please call me Chris, Miss.”
“Okay, I understand. Aren’t you disappointed, Chris? You couldn’t participate in the sword tournament because you were guarding me.”
“I participated in the sword tournament until last year. I was planning to rest this year anyway.”
“Really?”
Chris emphasized again when Rosette looked doubtful.
“Yes. And if I had wanted to go, I would have asked the others to guard you only during the sword tournament period and gone. Being here is my will, so you don’t need to worry.”
“That’s a relief.”
She was having light conversations with Joseph and Chris while looking around.
Joseph suddenly stood in front of Rosette. At the same time, Chris hugged Rosette.
“Who are you?”
Joseph asked in an uncharacteristically fierce voice.
Rosette turned her head slightly to see who was in front of Joseph.
‘It’s a kid?’
