83. Kidnapping (1)
January 22, 2024
“Then I will tell you the time and place later.”
Michael left the office with Perito. Marquis Dallas stared at the bracelet, lost in thought, then clenched it tightly.
“That sounds plausible.”
He grinned slyly.
“Very plausible.”
For a while, Marquis Dallas’s pleasant laughter echoed throughout the office.
* * *
It was just like any other day. I was having dessert and chatting with Michael at the cafe. Joseph and Chris, who were sitting at the table next to Rosette, had an intense conversation and then approached her.
“Miss, something’s wrong.”
“Wrong?”
“Yes. It’s a bit noisy downstairs….”
Joseph didn’t even finish his sentence.
Suddenly, something flew into the 3rd floor where Rosette was, and soon a thick, acrid smoke began to fill the air. In an instant, the view became hazy.
Rosette instinctively covered her mouth, but the smoke entered her nose. Tears welled up, and she started to sneeze.
“Miss! This way!”
Joseph shouted urgently and grabbed Rosette’s arm. But then the strength in his hand loosened, and he collapsed.
“Joseph!”
Not only that, but the sound of people collapsing could be heard from all directions.
‘It’s a sleep-inducing gas.’
Judging by how quickly it took effect, it was definitely a sleep-inducing fragrance created with magic. It seemed like Rosette was resisting because she had built up her magic resistance.
“Bibi!”
Rosette summoned Bibi to use magic.
If she could blow all this sleep-inducing fragrance outside, she could find out who did this.
However, Rosette didn’t even get to use her magic. Before she could, someone came up behind her and pressed a wet handkerchief to her nose and mouth.
“…!”
She tried not to breathe, but it was impossible. Rosette soon lost consciousness.
* * *
When Rosette regained consciousness, she was in a dark prison.
After thinking for a moment about where she was, Rosette suddenly remembered the situation before she lost consciousness.
‘Someone kidnapped me.’
The sudden attack on the cafe, Joseph and Chris collapsing, and someone who put a strange handkerchief over her. Judging from the circumstances, it was clear that she had been kidnapped.
‘Who is it? Why me?’
She had a rough idea why Rosette was kidnapped.
She was Adrian’s daughter. Even if Duke Adrian lived an honest life, as a high-ranking aristocrat, he couldn’t be without enemies. There were many who secretly targeted Adrian.
Even if that wasn’t the case, they might have kidnapped Rosette for money. Or….
‘They might have captured me to sell me off.’
The events of that day five years ago, which she had been trying to forget, came to mind. The two people who pretended to be Rosette’s biological parents and tried to kidnap her.
At that time, the woman said that there were many people targeting Rosette.
‘I don’t want to.’
Rosette first tried to open the prison door. As expected, the door only rattled loudly without opening.
She tried to open the door using magic. But even though it was clearly a simple spell, it put more strain on her body than usual.
Rosette coughed dryly but still focused on her magic. However, as soon as she used her magic, sparks flew from the doorknob, and she fell on her butt from the impact.
“What is this?”
Rosette looked around with uneasy eyes. Soon, she became somewhat accustomed to the darkness and was able to distinguish her surroundings a little.
She wasn’t the only one in this underground prison. There were several cages in the large, dark space, and inside them, skinny children were sitting blankly.
‘What is this place…?’
And in the center, there was a large marble structure that looked like an altar.
A chill ran down her spine. Goosebumps rose on her arms.
“Bibi.”
Rosette instinctively summoned Bibi.
However, Bibi, who should have appeared in the air with a “Bbit!”, did not appear. It was as if something was blocking her, and the connection with Bibi was cut off in the middle.
“What is this?”
This had never happened before. The only time Bibi hadn’t been summoned was when she was trapped in the underground prison of the Imperial Palace before her death.
After looking at her hand in confusion for a moment, Rosette discovered that she had a bracelet on her left arm that she had never seen before.
Just in case, she poured mana into the bracelet, and the bracelet absorbed the mana.
So it seemed that this bracelet was preventing her from using magic.
‘But who?’
Rosette tried to tear off the bracelet with her hands, but it was impossible. Even though she pulled so hard that the skin on her palms peeled off and bled, the bracelet showed no signs of breaking.
She tried to break it with magic as well. But this time too, it didn’t work.
‘It’s because I’m still young….’
Right now, Rosette’s mana core wasn’t as perfect as it was before her death. It was due to the limitations of her body. There were still magicians stronger than her, and it was clear that this bracelet was the work of such a magician.
There was one person who came to mind.
‘Was Marquis Dallas’s magic this strong?’
She thought she had surpassed Marquis Dallas with this much training, but it seemed that wasn’t the case.
At that moment, she heard someone walking towards her from somewhere. Rosette crawled into the innermost corner of the prison and curled up.
The hooded man looked around at the other children before entering the prison where Rosette was trapped. Rosette tried to use magic, but she still couldn’t use any magic.
The man, who had already come right up to her, grabbed Rosette’s face. Rosette gritted her teeth when she saw the red hair visible inside the hood.
“Marquis Dallas….”
If she had any doubts, it was confirmed that the person who kidnapped her was Marquis Dallas.
“Oh, you recognize me.”
How could she forget? That cursed blood-red hair.
Rosette asked sharply.
“What are you going to do to me?”
The Marquis smiled bitterly.
“Well, I’m thinking about it. What should I do with you? It would be a waste to just kill you along with Adrian.”
His eyes gleamed.
“Maybe I should make you my puppet.”
Michael said he would take Rosette with him. But Marquis Dallas’s intentions were different.
‘I can’t miss out on such a gem. And Michael, that guy too. He seems to have quite a bit of skill. Anyway, he’s a kid sent from the Magic Tower.’
He couldn’t afford to lose both children. Besides, he couldn’t let Michael, who knew all his plans, go like this.
So he decided to make both children his puppets and use them.
There was a way. He knew an ancient magic that was useful in this situation. All he had to do was engrave it near the hearts of the two children.
He had already cast a special magic on the cage where Michael was imprisoned, so he couldn’t use magic inside. At this rate, everything would end according to his plan.
“Of course, I have to deal with Adrian first.”
“No!”
Rosette rushed at Marquis Dallas. She threw a punch with all her might, but the Marquis easily subdued her.
“Argh!”
The Marquis twisted Rosette’s arm behind her back. It was a merciless touch. It was so painful that tears streamed down her face.
“Stay still, unless you want to scar your pretty face.”
The Marquis, who had already taken out a dagger, whispered as he held the sharp blade to Rosette’s cheek. As Rosette struggled, the blade grazed her cheek and drew blood.
Rosette didn’t care about getting hurt and turned her head to bite the Marquis’s hand hard.
“Argh! You little…!”
The Marquis slapped Rosette’s cheek with his large hand. Staggering, Rosette couldn’t get up and trembled in that position.
Marquis Dallas cut off a bit of her hair.
“Wait a moment, kid. I’ll be back.”
It was clear that he would use that hair to lure Duke Adrian. Rosette desperately reached out and grabbed Marquis Dallas’s leg as he tried to walk away.
She was dragged along before finally letting go. Marquis Dallas closed the bars and disappeared.
Rosette continued to try magic. But it was not enough.
She couldn’t summon Bibi, nor could she escape this place.
‘What should I do?’
How long had it been? The Marquis returned.
“The time has finally come to end everything!”
He laughed loudly and walked towards the other side, not Rosette. The child he dragged out was none other than Michael.
“Michael!”
Michael’s body was battered, as if he had been beaten for resisting. He couldn’t even come to his senses and was dragged away by Marquis Dallas.
Marquis Dallas placed him on the marble altar. Then he began to take off Michael’s shirt.
‘He’s trying to cast a curse.’
And probably after Michael, he’ll target Rosette, her.
Rosette shook the bars and shouted.
“Michael, wake up! Michael!”
Michael didn’t move. Meanwhile, mana began to gather in Marquis Dallas’s hand.
Rosette shouted with all her might.
“Michael! Open your eyes!”
The moment Marquis Dallas placed his hand on Michael’s left chest.
With a loud bang, Marquis Dallas flew backwards. Rosette grabbed the bars even tighter to avoid being pushed back by the strong shockwave.
When she opened her eyes, which she had tightly closed because of the wind.
“You little bug.”
Rosette could see Michael getting up.
Rosette shouted at him as he approached the fallen Marquis Dallas with elegant steps.
“Michael! Are you okay?”
Only then did he find her and stop. Michael glanced at Marquis Dallas for a moment before quickly approaching Rosette.
“Rose, are you okay? What did that bastard do to you?”
It was a rough word that didn’t suit his handsome face.
“I’m okay. But Dad is in danger. Marquis Dallas has my hair….”
“Wait a minute. What is this.”
Michael, who had properly checked Rosette’s face, growled lowly. He reached out between the bars and gently grabbed Rosette’s face.
His thumb rubbed near the wound on Rosette’s cheek. Michael’s expression became even more fierce when she frowned slightly at the stinging sensation.
“That bastard…. No, did Marquis Dallas do this?”
“Uh, maybe?”
“Ha. How dare he….”
Michael, who muttered harshly words that Rosette couldn’t hear, picked the iron bars open with magic. The door that Rosette’s magic couldn’t open opened very easily.
Michael fiddled with the bracelet on Rosette’s arm and used magic. Sparks flew from the bracelet, and soon the bracelet split in half.
Wiping the cold sweat that had formed on his forehead, Michael muttered.
“I think you couldn’t use magic because of this bracelet. You should be able to use it now.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. And I have to deal with that guy.”
Michael glanced at Marquis Dallas. Marquis Dallas had already gotten up and was starting to run away.
Rosette quickly stopped Michael.
“You can’t kill him.”
