#002 An Unexpected Landing (2)
I murmured my name, ‘Jeong Ye-seo,’ to myself.
“Your Highness?”
Benjamin and the servants’ eyes were on me. I stood frozen, at a loss for words.
A fictional character with the same name as me, someone I would know.
It could only be ‘Yesseo Venetian.’
“Ah…”
Suddenly, my vision went white, and I felt dizzy.
It felt like all the blood was draining from my head, leaving a chilling sensation.
“Your Highness!”
“Are you alright?”
Over Benjamin’s surprised voice, the young servants’ flurry of concern poured out.
I staggered, barely managing to lean on the sofa’s armrest.
As I slowly sat down and lifted my head, the dizziness subsided, and my vision became much clearer than before.
I need time to sort out the situation.
Looking at the faces filled with worry and anxiety, I smiled as if nothing was wrong.
“It seems my condition is recovering slowly. Would you mind leaving me alone for a while?”
*
“I had a feeling.”
Sitting still, I couldn’t help but mutter to myself. I had a feeling I recognized him.
I wasn’t a stranger to Yesseo Venetian. Eunseo had shown me tons of fan art of him.
“Pardon?”
The young servant who brought my bag at my request looked at me with wide eyes.
It was the luggage that Yesseo Venetian, the owner of this body, had brought from the Holy Kingdom.
Feeling sorry for startling the child, I told him as gently as possible to go and rest, assuring him it was nothing.
After watching the boy close the door and leave, I sat on the floor and unpacked.
“…Seriously, how can you come with so little?”
I understand that it would be strange to bring gifts when you’re coming as a hostage, and there’s no point in packing a lot of things when all the clothes are managed by the Imperial Palace, but still, how can you come so empty-handed?
I rummaged through even the small pocket inside the bag, but all I found in the prince’s luggage was a small notebook and a few plain clothes that he seemed to have worn during the journey.
No weapons, no treasures, no money, nothing.
Or maybe the Imperial Palace had already taken everything.
“Oh, dear.”
I straightened up from my cross-legged position and opened the notebook.
I was hoping he had at least left a short diary while traveling, but there wasn’t a single drop of ink on the pages. Lazy brat.
I wondered if there might be some kind of magic I didn’t know about, so I took it close to the fireplace and shone the light on it.
Nothing at all.
“What a carefree guy, huh?”
After briefly assessing the prince, I returned to the first page of the notebook.
Since I needed paper to write down what I knew, I thought I could write it here and keep it for myself.
I sat at the table and awkwardly picked up the quill pen placed on one side.
As I pressed the nib against the notebook, black liquid oozed out in a circle.
At the top, I wrote the title of the work I had entered.
.
I took a deep breath, feeling my hands tremble for no reason.
“Jeong Eunseo, what have you done…?”
I muttered my sister’s name and began to squeeze out everything I could remember.
, abbreviated as ‘Quit-cess’ a best-selling romance fantasy novel that shook South Korea.
Romance fantasy genre is commonly shortened to ‘RoFan,’ and Quit-cess was a super-hit that rewrote the history of RoFan, achieving new sales records every day.
Quit-cess was always ranked number one in the RoFan category on any platform where you could read web novels, and it consistently topped the real-time, daily, weekly, and monthly best-seller lists, as well as the steady-seller charts.
Even people who didn’t read RoFan knew the title and cover of Quit-cess.
As an unprecedented million-seller in the RoFan world, it was actively expanding into other media.
The webtoon [digital comic] was the beginning, and its popularity was so great that the server of Korea’s largest webtoon platform crashed before the first episode was even released.
There was also news of an animated adaptation with large-scale investment.
The Quit-cess drama CD, featuring a large cast of famous voice actors, sold out in just two minutes after pre-orders opened, and the number of additional copies had to be increased by 300% due to fans’ support and complaints.
Recently, top actors were brought in to record an audiobook, which included the official OST [original soundtrack] of Quit-cess.
The theme song for the main character, sung by the most popular idol group these days, naturally topped the music charts.
How do I know all this?
“I don’t know if this is a blessing or a curse.”
Because my sister, Jeong Eunseo (20 years old, college student), is an avid fan of this work.
Even the adjective ‘avid’ seems insufficient, but anyway, that’s how it was.
Quit-cess was a work that Eunseo started reading around January of last year, when she turned 19.
Quit-cess was a great escape for Eunseo, who was becoming increasingly edgy with the thought of becoming a real senior in high school in March.
When she messed up the June mock exam, Quit-cess was a great comfort, and when she did well on the September mock exam, she was happy, saying she could gain strength thanks to Quit-cess.
When she aced the college entrance exam, well, needless to say.
‘It’s the novel of my life, seriously. What am I going to do when this is over?’
Eunseo was nine years younger than me and twelve years younger than my older brother.
My brother and I raised our youngest sister like a daughter, spoiling her, and soon we were swept away like gym flyers by Eunseo’s typhoon-like love for Quit-cess.
I even kept the server time page open, which I hadn’t bothered with since college course registration, and waited for the drama CD pre-orders, and my brother’s work music at home was the Quit-cess OST.
It was because of Eunseo’s persistent insistence that we had to stream it.
Whenever our three siblings sat around the table to eat, Quit-cess was always a topic of conversation.
Eunseo would analyze the content of the episode that was released that day, and she would passionately argue why the sub-male lead, ‘Yesseo Venetian,’ should become the main character.
‘Seregi is really a no-go. He sinned against our Christel again. The answer is to end up with Yesseo.’
At first, it was very awkward for a character with the same name as me to be mentioned by Eunseo.
But as with everything, I got used to it. He’s just a character in a novel anyway.
‘Is the main character’s name Seregi?’
‘Oh, oppa [older brother/male friend]. You asked that before.’
‘Because he acts like trash, the fans call him Seregi.’
Eunseo asked me and my brother several times to read Quit-cess.
But my brother, who had been reading diligently until the middle, declared that it didn’t seem to be his taste and dropped out, and Eunseo was disappointed but didn’t force it any further.
As for me, I was busy with work and preparing for a career change at the beginning of last year, both physically and mentally.
After getting a new job, I was busy adapting to it.
I couldn’t even look at the three or four web novels I had been reading before.
Knowing this, Eunseo didn’t push me any further, and by the time Eunseo, who had been accepted into college, took a breather, the promotion of Quit-cess had naturally subsided.
My brother used to say that Eunseo talking about Quit-cess was more fun than Quit-cess itself.
I had never read Quit-cess, but I always secretly agreed with that statement.
That’s right.
I wasn’t a reader of Quit-cess. Damn it.
“How can you be possessed without even reading it?”
I was so dumbfounded that I let out a hollow laugh.
Still, now that I know I’m Yesseo Venetian, I can roughly guess the reason for the possession.
It’s because Eunseo cried her eyes out after seeing the episode that was uploaded last night.
The girl was in a frenzy, saying that the back of her head was tingling and that she had to send a message to the author, but then she declared, ‘I’ll sleep on it and think about it,’ and went into her room before 10 p.m.
Yesseo Venetian died in the latest episode.
“Possession and regression, too?”
Seeing that the guy who was supposed to be dead is alive and well, someone must have sent me to the past to save him.
The fact that I, who am not even a reader, was possessed is probably because of my sister Eunseo.
No, wouldn’t it be better for Eunseo, who has re-read the original many times and knows even the minor settings, to be possessed? Why did you send me?
Eunseo was a proactive and independent child.
If something like this happened, she would take the initiative to solve it herself, not leave it to me or my brother.
So, even though Eunseo’s sadness is the cause of the possession and regression, is there someone else who actually sent me here?
“…There’s no answer, really.”
The more I thought about it, the more complicated it seemed.
I decided to start with what I could do now and figure out what I could, one by one.
I wrote my name in the notebook, the name I would be called here.
I also briefly recorded what I knew.
∙ Yesseo Venetian
The person I possessed. The sub-male lead of Quit-cess. A prince of the Holy Kingdom.
For reasons unknown, he was taken hostage and imprisoned in the Juliette Palace.
He later dies in the war protecting the Crown Prince.
And I wrote the name of the main character below it. ‘Christel’…
“What was her last name? Sarkozy?”
No, that doesn’t seem right.
Eunseo usually called her ‘our baby’ or ‘our Christel,’ so it wasn’t easy to remember her last name.
∙ Christel
The main character of Quit-cess. Long pink wavy hair, sky blue eyes. A strong personality.
The setting is that a former office worker is possessed by a character from another world.
Judging by the fact that she is called a princess, she seems to be the daughter of a high-ranking family.
The reason I remember her hair and eye color is because I often saw the cover of Quit-cess.
I also remembered the face of the man who was hugging her waist and standing by her side in the picture.
“What was Seregi’s real name?”
What was the male lead’s name?
As befitting a male lead, he had a cool and handsome vibe, but because my sister only called him Seregi, I couldn’t remember it at all.
It definitely starts with ‘Se’.
∙ Seregi
The main male lead of Quit-cess. The Crown Prince of the Empire. Black hair and red eyes.
There is a big height difference with Christel.
I think I heard he’s a Sword Master.
His personality is said to be terrible.
Thanks to Eunseo often ranting, starting with ‘A Crown Prince who is…’, I was able to remember that the male lead was the Crown Prince.
It’s a shame I haven’t read the original, but I’m glad I benefited from listening to my sister’s chatter.
I hope I can remember more of what I’ve heard in the future.
After that, I wrote down the facts that spread randomly in my head.
Things my sister complained about while crying last night, things she said last week, things I heard when we went out to eat last month.
It was wise to take notes when I remembered them, as I would forget or get confused as time went on.
Writing them down also helped me review and memorize them.
After filling up a lot of paper, it was already noon.
I wrote the last item.
∙ My Goal
If my guess is correct, the reason I was possessed was to save this body, which will die on the battlefield someday.
There is only one way for a guy who is destined to die in battle to survive. Not to participate in the war in the first place.
There is also only one way for a guy who will sacrifice his life for the Crown Prince to live. Not to get involved with the Crown Prince.
There are many ways to avoid getting involved with the Crown Prince, but the key point in this work is that the Crown Prince and I are rivals for one woman.
Eunseo said that Yesseo Venetian saved the Crown Prince and threw himself away for Christel’s happiness.
So, not getting involved with the main character, Christel, will increase my chances of survival.
I didn’t hesitate any longer and wrote the last sentence.
∙ My Goal
Don’t get involved with the main characters, survive until the end of the war, and return home healthy!
Be well-rounded, don’t show off, eat well quietly, and keep my life intact.
Act according to my conscience, but don’t jump into things that others can handle.
Do my best to be tactful with both superiors and subordinates.
“Well, it’s nothing to an outsider.”
If I had to interfere in their romance, I wouldn’t know, but if it’s about becoming a complete stranger, I was more confident than anyone else.
The belief that only a lifelong solo can have filled my heart with pride.
