The Great War (1)
Ying Yu led his troops to the scene and found it littered with corpses, the remains of Lao Ai’s retainers.
Ying Yu immediately demanded, “Where are the King and the Marquis of Changxin?”
The retainers hastily replied:
“The Marquis of Changxin was captured by the King!”
“The King obtained some kind of divine weapon. We only heard a ‘da-da-da’ sound, and our brothers were mowed down.”
“We walked right into a trap. The King deliberately arranged this hunt to lure us into an assassination attempt. He was prepared and waiting for us.”
…
Ying Yu felt a growing sense of dread. The Marquis of Changxin’s actions would inevitably implicate him. He envisioned being torn apart by five horses [a brutal form of execution] and the extermination of his entire lineage.
After a moment of frantic thought, Ying Yu shouted, “Your assassination attempt on the King has failed, and he will show no mercy. If you surrender, only death awaits you, and your families will likely be exterminated. Now, take up your weapons and let’s rescue the Marquis of Changxin together! If the Marquis of Changxin and the Queen Mother’s child become the King, not only will we be spared, but we will all be promoted three ranks! This is our only chance!”
Lao Ai’s retainers considered his words carefully. What Ying Yu said made sense. The King would never truly forgive them, and a brutal reckoning was inevitable.
Instead of passively awaiting death and implicating their families, it was better to take up arms and follow Ying Yu’s Lishan army for one last desperate fight.
If they lost, their fate couldn’t be worse than it already was. But if they won, everyone would be promoted, achieving a significant leap in social status.
These rebels, fueled by renewed hope, grabbed their weapons and clamored to fight alongside Ying Yu once more.
“General, we will follow you to rescue the Marquis of Changxin!”
“Yes! Let’s fight! One more time!”
“The outcome can’t be any worse than it is now. We have nothing to lose!”
“Yes! Let’s fight! Success or failure, it all depends on this!”
…
Ying Yu nodded, his voice ringing with false promise. “Good! If the Marquis of Changxin and the Queen Mother’s child ascend to the throne, every one of you will be promoted three ranks! And whoever takes the King’s head will be rewarded with ten thousand gold and enfeoffed [granted land and title] as a Marquis of ten thousand households! Now, let’s go!”
Ying Yu led his army in pursuit towards the back mountain, but their large numbers made their movements cumbersome. Yang Chen and his small group of a few dozen men quickly retreated back to the palace.
Ying Zheng immediately summoned military generals, including Wang Jian, and handed the royal military seal to Wang Jian, tasking him with taking control of the situation at the Lishan camp.
Wang Jian, a highly respected figure in the Qin army, was more than capable of assuming command of the Lishan camp.
Wang Jian swiftly arrived at the Lishan camp, brandished Ying Zheng’s military seal, and announced loudly, “The King’s military seal is here! Soldiers of the Lishan camp, heed my orders! The King’s military seal is here! Soldiers of the Lishan camp, heed my orders! Ying Yu, in league with the traitor Marquis of Changxin, is plotting to assassinate the King and usurp the throne. The Marquis of Changxin has already been captured by the King. Capture Ying Yu immediately and hand him over to the King, and you will be richly rewarded!”
“The General took ten thousand brothers to the mountain!”
“Those he took were all his confidants!”
“General Ying Yu is actually rebelling? Is it true?”
…
Wang Jian quickly amplified his voice, “It’s absolutely true! Brothers of the Lishan camp, follow me to eliminate the rebel Ying Yu, protect the King’s safety, and safeguard the stability of our Great Qin! Soldiers of the Lishan camp, take up your weapons and follow me to quell this rebellion!”
The soldiers scrambled to don their armor and grab their weapons, then followed Wang Jian towards the palace.
Ying Yu led his ten thousand troops to the palace gates, only to find them firmly shut, preventing their entry.
At that moment, Ying Zheng and Yang Chen appeared above the palace gate.
“Bold Ying Yu! You are a member of my Ying clan, and I placed immense trust in you, entrusting you with the command of the Lishan camp. How could you conspire with Lao Ai, that rebel, to plot a rebellion! Have you betrayed my trust, betrayed your own family name?” Ying Zheng’s voice boomed. Ying Yu, his face contorted with anger, retorted, “As long as you are King, I am limited to controlling the Lishan camp. But if the Marquis of Changxin’s child becomes King, I will control the entire country’s army! King, don’t you think that’s a tempting prospect?”
“For the sake of controlling the entire army, you would betray the centuries-old foundation of my Great Qin? You have indeed disgraced your name, I am ashamed of you, and the entire Ying clan is ashamed of you!” Ying Zheng declared, his voice filled with disappointment.
Ying Yu, having crossed the point of no return, roared, “Ying Zheng, enough with the empty words! Since we’ve come this far, let’s see who has the last laugh! Brothers, whoever kills Ying Zheng will be rewarded with ten thousand gold and enfeoffed as a Marquis of ten thousand households! Charge!”
“Bang!”
A gunshot echoed, and Ying Yu tumbled from his horse.
“To defeat the bandits, first capture their leader. With Ying Yu down, the remaining rabble will be easy to handle!” Yang Chen stated calmly.
Ying Zheng chuckled, “What the Master says is true. Your marksmanship is as impressive as ever, able to hit a target from such a distance. Will he survive?”
“Probably! My gun’s power is relatively low. From this distance, and with his armor, he’ll likely only be in pain for a while, but he shouldn’t die! Zheng-ge [a familiar term for Zheng], order a volley of fire to sweep away those in front. The ones behind will naturally be terrified. Tell them not to kill Ying Yu; we need him and Lao Ai to be torn apart by five horses as a deterrent to others!” Yang Chen advised.
Ying Zheng nodded and immediately commanded, “The Assault Camp obeys the order! Sweep the rebels in front, but do not strike Ying Yu! Spare his life; I want to tear him and Lao Ai apart by five horses as a warning to all!”
As soon as Ying Zheng issued the command, the ‘tu-tu’ sound erupted once more.
Those in the front were Lao Ai’s retainers. They didn’t have to die, but they were courting death by rushing to the front, so they could only be said to deserve their fate.
The soldiers of the Lishan camp were terrified by the scene unfolding before them, and some timid soldiers couldn’t help but retreat.
After another three thousand rounds of bullets were fired, over a thousand unlucky souls fell, including both Lao Ai’s retainers and some soldiers from the Lishan camp.
Ying Zheng raised his voice, “I have equipped myself with powerful weapons, and you have witnessed their might. I don’t wish to kill you all. Lay down your weapons and surrender, and I will consider that you were temporarily misled by Ying Yu, and I may spare your lives! But if you choose to continue resisting, I will show no mercy! I will not only kill you, but also your families! You have only one chance to choose, so make your decision now!”
The soldiers of the Lishan camp hesitated, exchanging glances, and some, unable to withstand the pressure, began to lay down their weapons.
Ying Yu immediately roared, “Don’t believe his words! Our rebellion is a fait accompli; he can’t let any of us go. If we surrender, only death awaits us, and our families will be implicated! Brothers, pick up your weapons and fight!”
The soldiers of the Lishan camp immediately raised their weapons, preparing to fight.
At that moment, Wang Jian led the remaining troops of the Lishan camp, surrounding the rebels. He brandished the military seal and shouted, “The King’s military seal is here! Do not continue to aid these evildoers! Lay down your weapons and surrender immediately, or this general will order an attack!”
Ying Zheng added, “Lay down your weapons, or you will all die here. Ying Yu and Lao Ai stand to gain immense benefits from this rebellion, but what are you blindly fighting for?”
The remaining 90,000 soldiers of the Lishan camp immediately shouted in unison: “Lay down your weapons! Lay down your weapons…”
With the atmosphere reaching this point, the rebels immediately surrendered, dropping their weapons.
Ying Yu closed his eyes in despair, knowing he was finished.
Ying Zheng asked Yang Chen in a low voice, “Master, are you truly not going to pursue them?”
Yang Chen shook his head. “Don’t pursue them! But execute all the people with high status and reputation within this rebel army. It will serve as a powerful deterrent.”
Ying Zheng nodded. “Very well, everything will be done according to your instructions, Master.”
At that moment, the system issued a notification.
“Congratulations to the host for saving the lives of ten thousand people. You will receive the remaining lifespan of all of them, totaling 58,678 hours.”
Yang Chen: “…”
‘My God, I suddenly gained nearly sixty thousand hours of disposable lifespan!’
Who would have thought such an opportunity would arise? With nearly sixty thousand hours to freely dispose of, Yang Chen had a daring idea. If he accumulated enough disposable lifespan, could he travel back to the time when his parents were killed, forcibly prevent them from driving out, and use this disposable lifespan to sustain their lives?
Thinking along these lines, Yang Chen was instantly filled with motivation.
