Ep. 43
A day filled with many thoughts, the second day of the trip.
Like the first day, we spent the second day leisurely.
We tried catching minnows in the stream, got tired, and came out. For the record, we didn’t catch many minnows, and even those we caught were herded by hand. I wondered why we couldn’t catch them with the net, only to realize the mesh was bigger than the minnows.
Amazing idiots.
After playing for two or three hours, we returned to the cabin, played on our phones, or took naps.
In the evening, we grilled pork belly again and played phone games late into the night.
A day passed in an instant.
And finally, the day to return home.
This morning, I received Heena’s wake-up call, but I conscientiously went outside the room to answer it.
After waiting for the others to wake up, we ate breakfast. We wanted to play in the stream one last time, but unfortunately, it started to drizzle in the morning.
So, we decided to head back early since we couldn’t play anyway.
Ui-hyeon’s aunt agreed to our decision, so after a brief discussion, we left right away.
Honestly, besides the stream, it wasn’t much different from playing at home.
And I had been feeling my heart pounding fiercely all day since waking up this morning.
Hanging out with friends here?
It was fun.
But I realized that nothing in my recent life could exist without Heena.
Moreover, I was thinking of putting into practice what I had pondered alone yesterday, starting today.
[Heena: The ride back will be long too, right? You’ll be tired, so go in, take another nap, and rest well!]
This morning, Heena was acting like she missed me so much, asking when I would arrive, but now that we were leaving early, she sent me this message, probably worried about me.
Of course, I had no intention of doing that. I missed her.
After getting in the car, I sent Heena simple messages about every 15 minutes, realizing that I was getting physically closer to her.
The strange excitement filling my heart kept me from feeling carsick today.
[Han Yeon-hoo: Are you staying home today?]
[Heena: Yeah. It’s raining… and I’m organizing things to study together~]
I check Heena’s schedule one last time.
As always, she doesn’t have any particular plans. It’s really unromantic to just meet up and decide, but.
[Kang Joo-hyeon: How’s it going, Han Yeon? You’re even texting. Wanna hang out sometime?]
I received a reply from an old friend yesterday, and I realized that it’s important to reach out first, whether it works out or not.
—
“Thank you! Goodbye!”
I thanked Ui-hyeon’s aunt for the ride and hurried down the street with an umbrella.
My steps were as reckless as my heart, and I didn’t mind the rain soaking my feet as I moved as quickly as possible. Soon, I saw the entrance to Heena’s apartment, which I had visited once before.
I had asked to be dropped off near Heena’s house instead of mine, so I could get here quickly.
-Ring Ring Ring
I made a call from across the street from the apartment, confident that she would answer quickly as always.
As if to reward my expectations, she answered before the call could ring more than a few times.
—Hello? Yeon-hoo! What’s wrong?
Heena called my name so brightly that I felt the uncontrollable pounding of my heart as I replied.
“I’m in front of your apartment right now.”
—…Huh? Really? Why didn’t you go home… Wait, just a minute! I’ll be right out!
With those words, I heard a crashing sound and the call was cut off.
I had heard from Yoon-jeong noona [older sister or female friend] that it’s not a good idea to visit suddenly like this because women need time to prepare.
But still. Sometimes you have to be impulsive.
You can’t put a reason to everything you do in life.
Listening to the sound of rain bringing silence to the surroundings, my eyes were only fixed on the apartment entrance where Heena would appear.
And before long, I saw Heena hurrying out in comfortable shorts and a cardigan.
There was no one passing by, so she quickly found me and ran towards me.
“Yeon-hoo~”
Before she could ask what was going on, she folded her umbrella and hugged me.
I hugged her back.
Yeah, as expected.
No matter how many photos I receive, how many videos I get, or how many video calls we have.
It doesn’t even come close to seeing the real thing.
Under the awning of the building, I felt Heena’s soft, small frame all over my body, and hugged her like that for a while.
“You know, Yeon-hoo, that oㅃ…”
I covered Heena’s mouth with my lips, stopping her from saying something.
She opened her eyes wide in surprise, but soon lowered her eyes and accepted it.
As always, Heena wrapped her arms around my neck and we shared a kiss.
When we parted for a moment, we looked into each other’s eyes from close range.
“I missed you so much that I came without saying anything. Is that okay?”
I could see Heena’s eyes shaking at those words. With a feeling that went beyond being touched, something like she was about to cry.
“You can come anytime… whenever you want.”
“Really?”
“Yeah… Did you miss me that much?”
“I can’t stop thinking about you all day, it’s a problem.”
At my sincere words, without a single lie.
Heena’s arms tightened even more. So much that my neck hurt.
As if she would never let go.
“Suddenly saying pretty things, is that allowed?”
“Should I not?”
“No! It’s your quota from now on! You have to do it every day!”
“Sigh, a homework assignment.”
Saying that, I hugged Heena’s waist even tighter.
Because I wanted to express my current feelings, my impulse, a little more.
I tried to kiss her again.
But.
“But Yeon-hoo…”
“Yeah?”
“Over there.”
Saying that, Heena lowered one arm and pointed towards the apartment.
Following her gaze, I turned my head slightly and saw a man holding an umbrella, staring blankly at us.
Even at a glance, his features were distinct, revealing his handsomeness, with a cropped haircut.
Who is that…
“That’s my brother.”
“……”
Ah.
I’m screwed.
—
“Yeon-hoo, you liked chocolate, right? This is delicious! Ah~”
“…Ah-”
-Munch munch
I take a bite of the cake that Heena is feeding me in the heavy atmosphere.
In that despairing space of silence from before, Heena suggested we go to a cafe she frequents because it would be difficult to talk outside, so we came here.
Heena and I were sitting side by side, and across from us, Heena’s brother was looking at us with a very subtle face, neither angry nor smiling.
In fact.
The first time he saw my face was probably in that crazy video of me making kissing motions.
And today, he even watched me and his sister passionately hugging and kissing in real time.
The fact that I showed that to my girlfriend’s brother made this situation feel like hell.
However, unlike his expression, he didn’t seem to mind seeing that cringeworthy display of affection, and he talked comfortably with Heena in front of me.
“Hey, stop feeding him.”
“Oppa [older brother], be quiet. Yeon-hoo must be tired from the car ride.”
“No, what is that… Ugh, never mind. Your name is Yeon-hoo, right? Can I drop the formalities?”
“Ah, yes! Of course! Thank you for the treat.”
“That’s okay.”
The drinks and cake in front of me were all bought by Heena’s brother.
I was too nervous to even touch the drink.
“I’ve heard so much about you from her at home that I honestly know most of it… I’m Lee Hee-seong. Just call me hyung [older brother or close male friend].”
“Yes, Hee-seong hyung.”
“Drop the honorifics too.”
“Well… it’s our first time meeting today, so that’s a bit…”
“Ah, I don’t usually receive honorifics. None of the guys around me use them.”
He frowned and waved his hand as if he really hated it.
It was something that the Confucian blood ingrained in my bones couldn’t allow, but it wouldn’t be right to refuse when he said it so strongly.
“Then I will… no, I will, hyung.”
“Good job.”
“Don’t pressure Yeon-hoo, oppa.”
“……Is it burdensome?”
“…..No, it’s not.”
Awkwardness is greater than burden. I couldn’t show my usual sociability because the kiss scene I showed earlier was too much on my mind.
I should have listened to what Heena was trying to say before we kissed!
“Anyway, well… I’ve heard a lot.”
“…I’m a little scared to hear what kind of stories.”
“I also watched the video you sent yesterday.”
“I’m sorry for dirtying your eyes…”
“What are you talking about! How cute was that!”
I sincerely apologized, but Heena raised her voice from the side.
It’s enough if Heena thinks it’s cute, but still, it was a video that was undoubtedly a terror itself when other people, especially men, saw it.
Anyway, we were talking one word at a time in the midst of awkwardness, when Heena picked up her phone and got up from her seat.
“My mom called, I’ll take it for a second.”
Saying that, Heena left towards the corner of the store. Judging by the direction, it seemed like she was planning to go to the bathroom as well.
In other words, she wouldn’t be back soon.
I lowered my eyes slightly and put the straw of the fruit juice I had just started drinking in my mouth.
I was feeling the awkwardness to the fullest and was choosing what to say, but fortunately, Hee-seong hyung brought up the topic first.
“She wasn’t always like this, you know?”
The introduction was a bit out of the blue, but.
“But she suddenly changed about two or three months ago. I think it’s probably since she started dating you.”
“Ah, I heard that from your mother too… I heard.”
It was really hard to use informal speech on our first meeting. However, hyung seemed to understand that and continued without paying attention.
“Even though we’re siblings, she used to occasionally go out with friends or quietly study, unlike me, so I was a little curious about why she changed like that.”
“But she had that kind of vibe when I first saw her…”
“That’s why it’s even more amazing. I wonder what she sees in you. She says she fell in love at first sight… Ah, well, I’m not saying you’re weird or anything.”
Um. It’s a valid question, so I have nothing to say.
“Even though she talks about you often, I’ve only heard about it.”
Hee-seong hyung made a strange expression after saying that much.
“I also heard the story about when you guys went to the beach.”
“—Ptooey!!!”
I spat out the juice at those words.
No way?!
It was obvious what that story meant. Does she even tell her brother things like that?!
“Ah, of course I didn’t hear it from Lee Heena, I heard it roughly through my mom and dad. No, but does she tell her parents that kind of stuff? I was surprised to hear it.”
“Phew…”
I sighed in relief and fully agreed with hyung’s words. There’s no way Heena would even tell her brother about that, even if she told her parents. It was shocking enough that she told her parents.
“Anyway, well. We fight sometimes, but I’m still her brother, so I was worried about her… and I’m also grateful.”
“For what?”
“To be blunt, my sister is pretty good-looking, right? But the fact that she made that choice is… She’s smart, but she’s acting out of character when it comes to you.”
“…She does have that side.”
“If I had gone with my girlfriend, I would have definitely hit on her.”
Honestly, hyung looks like he likes to have fun. If I saw him on the street, I might have avoided him. But Hee-seong hyung, who is talking about his sister right now, really felt like an older brother.
“I understood it and didn’t understand it, but as her brother, I’m grateful. It’s better to see her like this than just studying like before. And it seems like you think about her a lot too. She told you I wanted to see you, right? I just wanted to say that.”
Moreover, the way he smiled slightly and continued to speak gently reminded me of Heena, making me think that they were siblings after all.
“I heard about you all the time through texts and calls even before I was discharged, and I still hear about you all day after I was discharged, so it’s a bit annoying sometimes.”
“I’m so sorry…”
“It’s okay.”
I imagined Heena’s fussiness and lowered my head in apology, but he chuckled and brushed it off.
“Keep dating well in the future. There will be all sorts of things while dating, but I won’t say the bullshit about not making her cry.”
“If Heena cries, it’s always my fault.”
“…You two talk exactly the same way…”
At hyung’s clicking tongue, I felt relieved and could smile slightly.
Hee-seong hyung, who seemed to be a very different type from Heena but had similar aspects.
I somehow liked him a lot.
—
“Sorry~ Did it take a little long? The call got long… Yeon-hoo?”
Heena, who returned to her seat a little later than expected, called me, but I was too busy concentrating on my conversation with Hee-seong hyung.
“Wow, hyung, it hasn’t been long since you were discharged, right? You’ve already cleared all of this?”
“I even considered a career as a pro gamer at one point, you know.”
“Are there pros in this kind of game?”
“I’m just saying. Just try to understand.”
In the conversation we had a little while ago, I subtly liked his personality and felt like he was Heena’s brother, so it became very comfortable to treat him. More than anything, I found out that this hyung likes games as much as I do.
A magical topic that can quickly bring men closer together. Even our gaming tastes were similar, so we had a great conversation.
In some ways, even more than my brothers. My brothers mainly play online games, but I also enjoy single-player games when I’m alone.
Hee-seong hyung was the same.
“I wanted to play that too, but I don’t think it’ll run on my computer.”
“You weren’t in the military, so you haven’t played Elxring [Elden Ring]? Is your graphics card bad?”
“It’s not that bad, but it’s been a while since I built it. It’s a 1000 series.”
“Then it’ll be tough. You don’t have a Playstation either?”
“Of course not…”
“Do you want to come to my house and try it later? The first thing this hyung did after being discharged was fully set up my computer.”
I felt my heart being pierced by those kind words.
“Hyungnim [very respectful term for older brother]!!”
“Yeah.”
“…Yeon-hoo?”
“Ah, you’re here?”
“……”
Heena sat down and called me again, but I gave a short answer and focused on my conversation with Hee-seong hyung again.
“But I’m supposed to study with Heena on the remaining days of vacation…”
“You’re not doing it every day, are you?”
“That’s true.”
“Come on the days you’re not. You don’t have to come just to see her, do you? I’ll give you my phone number, so contact me in advance if you’re coming.”
“Wow, really? Thank you!”
While I was happily entering hyung’s phone number, I suddenly felt the table shaking a little.
I wondered what was going on and looked around, and I saw Heena trembling.
“……..Go back…”
“Huh?”
“Oppa, go home now! I’m going on a date with Yeon-hoo!!”
“Ah, why are you suddenly being hysterical? We’re having fun.”
“Quickly!! Yeon-hoo! Who’s more important, me or oppa?!
No, what is this crazy multiple-choice question?
At the same time, I wondered if this was the real side she showed to her family.
Not just a loud voice, but a high-pitched shout that I could never make.
“Of course it’s you.”
“Then who’s more important, me or the game?!”
“…………….You.”
Oops.
Heena never brings up these kinds of things related to games, so I was flustered and my answer was a little late. She usually understands my gaming so well.
However, I don’t know how Heena took that short gap that was caused by my confusion, not my consideration, but her eyes welled up with tears and her face turned bright red.
But after that, Heena’s anger wasn’t directed at me.
“Oppa, go away quickly!! Get out!!”
“Wow, your boyfriend likes games more than you, so why are you doing this to me? It’s so unfair.”
“I told you to leave!!!”
“Ah, okay. Hey! Contact me later!”
“Okay~ Bye, hyung!”
“Go away quickly!!”
As Hee-seong hyung, who was chased out by Heena, disappeared from view, her eyes turned to me.
I could feel that she wasn’t angry in her eyes, but rather ‘I’m really sulking,’ so I quickly blurted out an excuse.
“Heena, you know I like you much more than games, right?”
“…Are you sure?”
“Of course! I don’t usually say those things, so I was a little flustered. Is there anything to think about?”
“……..Then don’t just say it, show it with your actions.”
Saying that, Heena clung to me.
It was hard to appease her. I kissed her a lot, hugged her. I did all sorts of skinship [physical affection].
And I kept saying with my mouth.
‘I’m trying to get close to Hee-seong hyung because he’s your oppa too.’
‘Of course! Why would I go there when you’re not there? I’ll only go when you’re there.’
Etc.
Ha.
Come to think of it, I came here impulsively because I wanted to treat Heena better.
What the hell have I done?
