Magic is Learned for Nothing – Episode 236
# 236
Finding Paradise 1
“After a fulfilling day’s work~!”
Thirty men, pickaxes and shovels slung over their shoulders, wearily trudged back to the barracks.
Their faces were etched with fatigue.
The life of a slave was a first-time experience for them.
The food wasn’t bad; they got plenty of snacks, comfortable living conditions were guaranteed, and they even got one day off a week.
But still, it was slavery.
They were once soldiers of Julian the Baronet, who had tried to make a big score by robbing Baron Legion’s property, only to be caught and sentenced to hard labor in the mines.
Even Mamezer, the leader of the singing soldiers, glanced around cautiously.
At first, the Orcs’ surveillance was strict.
Some tried to escape and were caught, others charged and were beaten, and after a long period of being beaten to a pulp… they finally understood their place.
That was already half a year ago.
Gradually, the Orcs’ surveillance began to loosen, and these days, there was hardly any surveillance at all.
They seemed to be at ease because it was such a remote mountain area.
Perhaps they were confident that even if they escaped, they wouldn’t be able to get out of the Dusselph Mountains. In fact, escaping through that forest was nearly impossible.
However, the slaves, using their experience in the military, had not wasted their time.
Dividing tasks centered around Mamezer, they created a map of the canyon, secured escape routes, and even perfectly prepared escape routes to nearby areas.
This wretched slave life was finally coming to an end.
“Well, everyone worked hard today. Wash up, have dinner, and get some rest.”
Today’s slave duty was Sharon.
She was the wife of Saikop, Zenon’s close former knight. She was also a mother of twins.
The father was in charge of childcare, and Sharon earned the money.
Her husband, being a former knight, seemed to only know how to use a sword. But he wasn’t even stronger than his wife, Sharon, and his skills were rather mediocre.
If they sent him out to hunt, he might just die.
So, they just made him a full-time homemaker. He’s been suffering from housewife’s eczema lately, but he seems to be satisfied nonetheless.
The slaves rushed into the barracks.
Seeing them enter, Sharon and the Orcs prepared to withdraw as usual.
Actually, it wasn’t a complete withdrawal.
They kept guard every hour, monitored for external intrusions, and occasionally checked the slaves’ tents.
But it seemed they had become too lax.
They hadn’t noticed the slaves’ schemes. The slaves first crushed herbs that induce sleep and put them in the well. Sharon and the Orcs, after drinking that water, fell asleep in less than an hour.
“Okay. Let’s go.”
Mamezer and his men checked on the sleeping Orcs.
The reason they didn’t stab them to death with knives was to prepare for any unforeseen circumstances. What if they couldn’t escape the Dusselph Mountains? They couldn’t rule out the possibility of encountering other Orcs.
If those Orcs attacked them, shouting, ‘You killed our comrades!’ they would have no choice but to become corpses.
Perhaps they would be tortured in cruel ways that defied human common sense.
So, they didn’t touch the sleeping Orcs.
When Mamezer’s men gestured, the remaining slaves came out of the barracks.
They carefully escaped the mine.
“Huff, huff, huff.”
They ran frantically.
They crossed forests, traversed cliffs, and even crossed valleys twice. Even though they were out of breath, no one stopped.
Mamezer, who was running in the lead, stopped just after crossing the first ridge.
“How far have we run?”
He quenched his thirst with the water bottle he had.
His whole body was covered in sweat. The other comrades were the same. They were so exhausted that they sprawled out on the rocks and drank water.
They had been running for at least three hours without rest. They had done mock escapes several times, so they could come this far with their eyes closed.
“Haven’t we escaped enough by now?”
One of his men cautiously looked around. He was also quite exhausted. He breathed heavily. They had really run away with all their might.
Chirp, chirp.
Summer seemed to be approaching. The sounds of countless insects tickled their ears.
“Which way do we go now?”
Mamezer’s right-hand man asked.
“Let’s get out of the forest first. After that, how about going to CM [presumably a coastal city or region]? I want to settle down on a beautiful beach.”
“That sounds really good.”
The men burst into laughter.
Actually, wouldn’t anything be good? As long as they could escape this place!
Moreover, they had each stolen one or two chunks of Mithril [a rare and valuable metal] in their pockets. They wanted to bring more, but they couldn’t due to weight and other issues. But even selling this would be at least 1,000 gold.
It was more than enough money to escape and become self-sufficient.
“Alright. Let’s go.”
Mamezer, who had taken a short, sweet break, got up from his seat.
It was time to move again.
The Orcs would wake up in a couple of hours, and then a pursuit team would be formed immediately. Thinking about that, they had to diligently put distance between themselves from now on.
‘Damn it, if I just get out of here, I won’t even pee in this direction!’
It was when Mamezer was thinking that and trying to move his feet.
“Wait a minute…….”
Mamezer paused.
His men also stopped walking at his hardened expression. A suffocating silence descended.
…….
The insect sounds that had been so loud suddenly disappeared. The birdsong that had been heard in the distance was no longer audible.
Complete silence.
“Gulp.”
Someone swallowed hard.
The sound of swallowing was so loud.
“T, this… is a bit strange, right?”
The subordinate whispered lowly.
There was only one case for this. It was a phenomenon that occurred when a being emitting an unapproachable, powerful killing intent appeared.
The slaves had similar experiences before.
When an Ogre named Sepia or something appeared. The phrase ‘I almost died’ was used at that time. If you just wielded a mediocre sword, got hit a few times, got injured in the side, and said, ‘Ugh, Corporal Kim, I’m done for. Go on ahead,’ that’s not almost dying.
You just have to lose your mind and lose your mind to almost die.
If you go in and out of his mouth once, you will know that you are standing on the boundary between life and death.
That’s what it really means to almost die.
Could it be……?
The slaves desperately looked for something that could be used as a weapon.
But at best, they only had rotten wooden clubs and stones. They had no weapons to protect themselves from the monster’s attack.
Doo-geun, doo-geun [onomatopoeia for a pounding heart].
They couldn’t move at all. There was something, but they couldn’t figure out what it was.
“What the hell…….”
“Shh!”
Mamezer irritably brought his finger to his lips. He was concentrating extremely.
The voices of his men distracted his focused nerves.
Perhaps they were surrounded by monsters. Which way should they run? If they made a mistake, they might all die here.
At that moment-
Whaaaaaaaaaaam!
The sky tore apart, and a huge pressure slammed down on the slaves.
Bang!
They thought their ears were going to burst from the tremendous noise.
The slaves unknowingly raised their heads and looked at the sky. An enormous wind pressure crushed their faces. Some of the men couldn’t withstand the shock and fell on their butts.
“W, Wyverns…….”
Ten Wyverns were floating above their heads, emitting green eyes.
The slaves were frozen like mice meeting a cat at the overwhelming sight.
-Krrrrrrrr.
Nuvianuvian, who had been receiving physical therapy steadily, landed gently.
Nuvianuvian was twice as big as an ordinary Wyvern.
It was at least comparable to a two-story building. Even skilled people had a hard time making eye contact with him head-on. Not to mention ordinary humans…….
-My back feels better?
Nuvianuvian’s expression was very bright as he flew in the sky for the first time in months.
He had to lie in his nest for more than half the day because his back hurt. He ate all the medicinal herbs that were good for his body, but there was no improvement.
Legion was the grateful person who helped him.
Legion inherited Mark’s medical knowledge and adjusted his misaligned vertebrae. He had severe disc problems, so he had to receive continuous treatment, but he would soon return to normal.
Nuvianuvian grabbed Legion’s hand and shed tears. He was the man who straightened out his life.
He made a proclamation to the Wyvern tribe.
-From now on, we will follow Legion! Remember that Legion is our brother, our parent, and our love!
The tribe’s elders were choked up.
-Do you think you can handle things like this as the chief! No! Are we going to interact with humans? Humans are livestock! How can we make a peace treaty with livestock on equal terms!
Nuvianuvian tried to persuade the elders.
Legion grabbed Nuvianuvian and shook his head.
“There is a faster way to persuade than words.”
-What is it?
Nuvianuvian tilted his head.
Legion looked at Dreizer, who was sharpening the ax blade in the back.
A warrior with braided hair.
When he slowly stood up and smiled with a ferocious face, one gold tooth sparkled. He had gold teeth put in for the teeth he lost in the battle with the Dark Slime. Legion asked if he could just use a different color because it looked scarier.
“I’ll just use gold teeth because I look rich,” Dreizer replied.
It was a divine move.
His impression became even dirtier.
It was Dreizer who volunteered to be the face of the devil that you could never forget once you saw it.
Regardless of race, there would now be no one who would not be terrified by his face.
Legion gave a thumbs up while looking at such Dreizer. Your face is the best!
When he smiled-
The tribe’s elders felt their spines stiffen. They looked at Nuvianuvian. Something was wrong. Hey, tribe, who is that guy? Is he a demon or something?
Nuvianuvian averted their eyes.
“Hey, you big fly-like bastards. Follow me.”
Dreizer took the Wyvern elders to a secluded alley.
After that-
They threw a vote of approval without even listening to Legion’s words.
The contract was also completed.
Legion signed, and Nuvianuvian put his handprint on it. It was a content where each other made as many concessions as possible.
What he paid special attention to was ‘Wyvern World’. He changed the name to World after naming it ‘Wyvern Park’.
Wyvern World!
He was confident that ‘Wyvern World’ would be a huge hit as soon as it opened.
Legion was happy just thinking about it.
‘Wyvern World’.
Legion decided to pour all the money he had. An item that could never fail. Legion was swept away by the swelling dream of becoming the richest man on the continent.
Based on the contract, exchanges between the Wyverns and Legion’s territory would begin.
“But don’t lift heavy things for half a year.”
Legion smiled and replied.
-Of course. Who are you talking to? But what are these things?
Nuvianuvian approached Mamezer and tapped him on the cheek.
Mamezer was pissing his pants while standing there. Really… he wanted to faint.
