As they were about to start dividing the parts, one of the staff members approached Do-hyun and suggested an interview.
Do-hyun recognized the importance of this interview. He thought that if he answered incorrectly, he would be treated the same as Participant No. 30, who had been evicted for his terrible personality.
“Yes, I will do the interview.”
Do-hyun, who had already debuted once on an audition program, was experienced and skilled.
He answered smoothly and without hesitation when asked what he thought of Participant No. 30’s behavior. He added that he felt very sorry for him and that it was a shame because his voice had potential. Of course, some of it was a lie, but the staff member looked at Do-hyun’s expression and said that he sympathized.
“I hope that he will have an opportunity to show off his talent somewhere.”
“Do-hyun, you seem to have a beautiful face and a beautiful heart. You’re amazing.”
“No, I have experience appearing on audition programs before. Every time good friends are eliminated, I feel sorry.”
“Oh, I see. Thank you for the interview! Fighting!”
As the staff member walked away, Do-hyun turned back to his team members and opened his mouth.
“Shall we start dividing the parts in earnest?”
* * *
After No. 30 left, practice was easier.
Everyone was greedy for parts, but they were satisfied when Do-hyun distributed the parts that suited their voice tones.
The most beautiful and sacred part, known as the ‘Saintess Part,’ was given to Participant No. 49.
Do-hyun knew that he could sing everything from the low to high range, so he took the part after the intro. In this part, the sound of musical instruments is less audible, so the voice gets more attention. These were the parts that could attract fans.
The other participants admired Do-hyun’s personality, thinking that he was sacrificing himself.
They didn’t know what calculations were going on in Do-hyun’s head.
Today was the day to rehearse in front of Coast, who was a judge and trainer.
Do-hyun felt a little nervous when he recalled the last preliminary round.
“Everyone ready? You have to think about how meticulous Coast is.”
“I’m ready, but I don’t know if I can do well. Coast judged me in the preliminary round, and he was very picky.”
“My friend was judged by Coast, and he said it was a little difficult.”
They shared their experiences and memories and moved to the practice room where Coast was, feeling nervous.
Other participants had been practicing until just now, but they prepared for the stage in front of Coast, clearing their throats.
“Everyone, you all know the point of this song and which parts to bring out now, right?”
Do-hyun was in charge of directing during the practice period.
Thanks to his experience with CEO Lee Joon-hyuk’s meticulous directing at HU Entertainment, he was able to help his fellow group members bring out their voices even better.
“Of course!”
“That’s a relief.”
Just in time, Coast entered. He was holding a tablet PC in his hand.
Coast touched the tablet, tilted his head, and asked Do-hyun, the leader.
“This group has four members?”
“Yes, Participant No. 30 was evicted, so there are four of us.”
“What was the reason Participant No. 30 was evicted?”
“There was a bit of an issue during the part distribution process.”
“Was it okay with four people?”
“Yes. It wasn’t difficult. It was okay.”
“I see. You seem confident, so I want to hear the song. If you’re all warmed up, let’s go.”
At Coast’s nod, the staff played the MR [music recorded without vocals, used for practice or performance].
The intro was not Do-hyun’s. It was another team member’s. The second verse was the part that Do-hyun was in charge of.
The beginning was an interlude where the orchestra spread out like a fantasy. It was a melody reminiscent of the season when cherry blossoms flutter.
The intro began, and the team member began to sing.
The team member’s voice trembled, perhaps because Coast was in front of them.
Do-hyun could also see Coast’s expression crumpling as he listened to the trembling.
Do-hyun, who was next, sang as he always had.
Do-hyun saw Coast’s expression, which had been slightly frowned, unfold.
‘Is it a success?’
Do-hyun’s voice was full of confidence.
After Do-hyun’s part ended, the third verse came out, and then the chorus began.
Participant No. 49’s clear voice was placed on the melody, giving the feeling of being in the middle of a spring day.
Coast’s expression remained unchanged from this point on.
‘What is he thinking?’
He tried to read his expression, but he couldn’t.
After the Saintess part was over, the group members all stacked harmonies and finished the last verse.
Coast looked at the tablet PC and asked.
“No. 49, your voice is quite good. Your diction was good, and I felt that your clarity shone even more in the climax. Did you choose it yourself?”
Then Participant No. 49 replied.
“No. Leader No. 23 recommended the part.”
“Hmm, the leader has a good grasp of the strengths of the voice. This team’s voices are generally harmonious. You showed a slight wobble in the intro, but overall, I like it very much except for that part.”
“Thank you!”
Do-hyun’s head bowed involuntarily.
Coast waved his hand and said that such greetings were not necessary.
“I am a judge, but I am also here to point out your shortcomings. I am doing my job, so you don’t have to be especially grateful.”
It was a more humble feeling than I thought.
Coast, one of the leading singers in Korea as a vocalist, was not expected to be such a humble and calm person.
‘You have to have that kind of attitude to survive longer in the entertainment industry.’
“Thank you.”
“You don’t have to express your gratitude anymore. Now I will evaluate you. No. 28 sang the intro, right?”
Participant No. 28 said yes.
Coast looked at Participant No. 28 with a serious look.
“Are you very nervous right now?”
“Yes. I’m very nervous.”
“This is just practice. Have you never seen an audition like this before?”
“I’ve never seen one before! I’ve only been to neighborhood singing contests.”
“Hmm, then you need to adapt to the audition system. If the singer trembles, the listener can’t concentrate properly because of the uneasy feeling. Do you understand?”
“I’m sorry!”
“No. As I said before, I’m here to correct your mistakes or misaligned points, and you don’t have to be sorry to me. I’m advising you to sing so that the listener doesn’t feel uncomfortable listening to the song. This song depicts the beautiful scenery of cherry blossoms blooming, singing together about a love that has left. If you sing it with anxiety here, how do you think the public will react?”
Do-hyun thought that Coast’s words were all correct, and he worried about what kind of harsh evaluation he would receive next.
“The second was leader No. 23, right? No. 23, do you think you chose your part successfully?”
“Yes. I think the part I directed and chose suits me best.”
“Why?”
Coast asked coldly.
Do-hyun answered honestly.
“I have a wide range from low to high. The other group members’ ranges were a little narrower than mine. So I found the group members’ ranges first, and then I chose and discussed the parts that suited my range.”
“You’re a leader who cares more about your team members.”
“I don’t know what to do with myself when you say that.”
“No. 23’s voice was perfect for that spot, just like No. 49’s voice was well placed from the chorus to the climax. You cared about your team members more than yourself, and you gave us a good voice without tension, so I could listen well.”
Coast evaluated each person and advised on how to improve their pronunciation.
After receiving intensive advice for about an hour, they returned to the practice room.
Tomorrow is the first round of the main competition. A stage where 50 out of 124 people can survive. Do-hyun had to survive there.
‘Should I draw one more card?’
Even though he looked relaxed when singing in front of Coast, it wasn’t that Do-hyun wasn’t nervous.
Rather, he hoped that the tarot would work out well.
“Hyung [older brother or male friend]!”
While sitting blankly in the practice room and worrying, Hyo-seop, who was in another team, burst into the room.
“Oh, Hyo-seop. Aren’t you practicing?”
“Our team is done practicing. Now we just need to manage our condition.”
“That’s a relief.”
“Isn’t your team done yet?”
“We’re almost done too. The team members said they were going to sleep first and left, but I stayed to practice my part a little more.”
“Wow, you’re a hardcore practice bug, hyung.”
“Hardcore? If I’m going to make my fourth debut, I have to use any means possible. The thought of seeing an article in the newspaper saying that my fourth debut was canceled is terrible.”
“Surely not?”
“Don’t you know that internet reporters are spicy these days?”
Do-hyun said with a smile.
Hyo-seop grumbled that he didn’t know the flow of recent articles because he didn’t have a cell phone.
“You can see it once a week. It’s better to do it like now than to be shaken by the articles.”
“Still. I wonder if my friends are looking for me.”
“That won’t happen.”
“What, hyung. Don’t you have any friends?”
At Hyo-seop’s words, Do-hyun tilted his head back and laughed.
The pure question of whether he had any friends made Do-hyun laugh.
“How can I not have friends? Hyo-seop, will you listen to my song? Evaluate it objectively.”
“Oh. I’m good at that.”
Hyo-seop quickly asked to hear the song.
Do-hyun played the music.
Soon, Do-hyun’s song began.
Hyo-seop’s face, which had been smiling, gradually changed.
From some point on, only pure emotions were contained.
When the song ended, Hyo-seop gave a standing ovation.
“What’s with the standing ovation?”
“Hyung, I’ll treat you like a brother from now on.”
“What brother.”
“Wow, your voice is heavenly?”
At Hyo-seop’s praise, Do-hyun tried to turn the conversation around by clearing his throat.
But Hyo-seop poured out all kinds of praise.
“A handsome person has a good physique, good proportions, and a good voice. Wow, I realized that this is what it should be like, hyung!”
“I’m just an unknown singer anyway.”
“Hyung, being unknown and famous is a fine line. Only the day to become a famous singer is left. I’m jealous.”
At the pure admiration, Do-hyun told Hyo-seop to go to sleep quickly and got up from his seat.
Some time later, Do-hyun, who was lying in bed, thought about many things in his head.
‘Hmm, maybe the opportunity that the Star Card gives will shine on this stage.’
That feeling came into his head and was embedded.
Do-hyun wondered how tomorrow would go.
