Dr. Fresh: The Doctor Who Sees a Fresh Future – Episode 202 (202/241)
#202 Eagle Eye, Woman’s Hand, Lion’s Heart (5)
“Team Leader, what’s going on?”
“Rankings?”
The voice of the PR Team Leader sounded excited over the phone.
I hadn’t checked the portal search rankings, but I could roughly guess what was happening.
“I heard it from my colleagues. I bet Professor Baek Ui-sin is number one, right?”
“Excuse me?”
I didn’t expect this.
Of course, there must be more than one intern wandering around Gangnam Station, but that must be referring to me.
“…Does that mean I’m trending in the search rankings?”
Rumors spread so fast.
‘Is this the world we live in?’
I let out an old-fashioned sigh and recalled what had happened a few hours ago.
I had made a fuss in the emergency room and moved the patient to the elevator, so many people must have witnessed it.
The scene of Professor Baek Ui-sin running down the hospital hallway with his hand inside the patient’s chest amidst a pool of bright red blood.
It must have been impressive to anyone who saw it.
It was a stimulating moment even for me, who had become accustomed to many situations in the hospital.
‘But why am I suddenly involved?’
During the call, I opened the community link that the PR Team Leader had sent me.
There was a blurry photo of the patient being put on a stretcher and rushed to the elevator.
-I’m one of the people who witnessed it at Yeon Guk University Hospital. The person in casual clothes is definitely Baek Ui-sin. The person running next to him in a gown is the Gangnam Station Intern.
-Wow, lol [laughing out loud].
-Amazing, lol.
-They really live dynamically.
-Gangnam Station Intern? That person was an intern last year, so they probably aren’t an intern anymore this year. -Could it be that Baek Ui-sin has returned to the medical field to take him as his successor?
-That’s plausible?
Successor?
I read the post on the community forum, and my face turned red.
Of course, the hospital’s training system is basically similar to an apprenticeship.
However, the relationship between a professor and a prospective resident like me is unlikely to be so close.
Nevertheless, people were imagining that Professor Baek Ui-sin had returned to the hospital to nurture me.
The way the PR Team Leader was trying to promote me was unusual.
In these cases, he was clearly planning something and trying to coax me.
For example, needing a main photo for the Yeon Guk University Hospital website or trying to create a press release…
“Are you trying to get me to do something?”
I could hear him snickering over the phone.
As expected, my prediction was correct.
“My video got 6 million views?”
The plan he explained was roughly like this.
A mentoring special featuring a professor and a first-year resident.
One is a doctor already called a legend.
The other is a promising doctor who has just stepped into the first stage of thoracic surgery.
A one-on-one conversation between the two.
The idea was to film a video of me asking questions and Professor Baek Ui-sin giving life advice.
“…Suddenly?”
Why is the scale so big?
A sudden proposal.
I roughly understood what the picture was.
I was the one who advertised myself as a ‘Baek Ui-sin Wannabe’ on TV in front of the whole nation last year.
The goal was to increase the buzz along with Professor Baek Ui-sin’s return and promote the hospital.
To the PR Team Leader’s ambitious words, I immediately replied.
“I’m overwhelmed.”
I tried to refuse politely.
Was it because my first meeting with Baek Ui-sin today wasn’t so smooth?
I wasn’t readily inclined to do it.
He had clearly told me not to come to thoracic surgery and treated me as unqualified.
Now is not the time to be exposed to the media together. At least not until I am recognized.
And of course, although he is someone I respect, it feels awkward just imagining asking and answering questions in front of the camera.
However, the PR Team Leader threw out a trump card as if he knew I would say that.
“…Professor Baek?”
I paused to think.
‘Even if I end up working under Professor Baek Ui-sin in the future, will there be another opportunity to have a serious conversation in a one-on-one format like this?’
“Then I’ll do it.”
He seemed pleased with my cool answer.
Of course, I was overwhelmed, but honestly, I was also a little excited.
Professor Baek Ui-sin.
The person I had looked up to as a compass in my heart since I was a student.
Every word he said was a kind of proverb and a guide to life for me.
So there were tons of things I wanted to ask him.
“Okay.”
The PR Team Leader hung up the phone with a nasal voice.
Skin care, would I have time for such a luxury?
Thinking about my life in thoracic surgery these days, I think it’s a blessing if I can just avoid looking like a beggar.
Now that I’ve agreed, it’s no small matter.
* * *
Friday’s general ward conference.
A large meeting where all members of the Department of Thoracic Surgery gather.
A time to review the surgical reports from the past week and the incidents/accidents called M&M (Morbidity & Mortality) [analysis of patient deaths and complications].
Of course, the main issue this week was the story of the emergency room CPR and emergency surgery for patient Jang Jae-sung.
“…Therefore, the patient is currently under observation in the intensive care unit after emergency surgery.”
The new chief resident, Song Yu-ju, briefed in a clear voice while standing on the platform.
Professors were sitting in the audience with solemn expressions, and Professor Baek Ui-sin, who was scheduled to start working next week, was not yet seen.
“Fortunately, Professor Baek Ui-sin was next to him, so he was able to stop the bleeding focus and quickly move him to the operating room.”
During the presentation, Professor Baek Ui-sin’s name could not be avoided, and the atmosphere in the conference room became strange.
“I think the patient’s CPR time was not short, are there any neurological sequelae?”
Professor Ahn Young-wook of Pediatric Cardiology asks in a sharp voice.
“Fortunately, there are no neurological sequelae, and we are planning to transfer him to the general ward next week.”
Song Yu-ju answers, but the expressions of some professors are not very good.
“Someone who hasn’t even started working yet… went to the emergency room. It’s fortunate that the patient is okay, but….”
“If the pulmonary artery bursts like that in BPF [bronchopleural fistula], we’ll have to keep a close eye on it in the future.”
Everyone is more edgy than usual.
Of course, in terms of content, they are worried about the patient’s safety.
But, how should I say it…
Is it just my imagination that I feel a sense of antipathy towards Professor Baek Ui-sin?
As everyone became less talkative, Ward Chief Professor Heo Jun-im smiled and changed the atmosphere.
“Oh, anyway, the patient was almost in big trouble, but fortunately, it seems like it was well managed! I heard it’s a big deal on the internet these days because of this? As expected, he’s an issue maker, Professor Baek Ui-sin. Ahaha!”
“…”
“And as announced in advance, there will be a welcome dinner for Professor Baek tonight at Woosunggak. I hope many of you will participate!”
Unlike Professor Heo Jun-im, who was talking brightly, some professors turned their heads and stared into the distance.
As the meeting ended, everyone stood up and walked out.
Some professors expressed their non-attendance to Professor Heo Jun-im.
“Ah, I have a prior engagement, so I don’t think I can attend.”
“I also have a surgery schedule today….”
Residents and fellows also murmured as they left the conference room.
Among them, I overheard a fellow who seemed to have worked with Baek Ui-sin whispering.
“What’s going on with the atmosphere?”
“Why?”
“I used to work with him. When that person is in the organization, originally… no, let’s talk about it separately later.”
Some residents move away while having a conversation with a sullen expression.
Of course, not everyone welcomed Baek Ui-sin.
Professor Heo Jun-im was already high-tension, but she seemed even more excited than usual.
She probably has a good relationship with Professor Baek.
And among the residents, there was someone who looked noticeably excited, and that was Song Yu-ju.
“Are you going to the welcome dinner?”
“I have to go. Please switch my duty.”
“What’s wrong? You haven’t asked to switch your duty once in 4 years!”
He is having such a conversation with Ma Dong-seop.
Dr. Song Yu-ju, who always moved like a robot according to a set schedule, is switching her duty?
“Just switch it for today.”
A faint smile appears on his lips as he says that.
This was also surprising.
Dr. Song Yu-ju is raising the corners of her mouth?
Of course, it’s still close to expressionless as usual, but considering Song Yu-ju’s expression that I’ve been observing, that’s about 10 steps of joy.
It’s probably because of Baek Ui-sin’s return.
‘When viewed from the outside, Professor Baek seemed to be respected by everyone… but the atmosphere inside the hospital is different.’
Could there be someone whose likes and dislikes are so divided?
It’s as if the Department of Thoracic Surgery is divided in half.
This strange atmosphere continued until the dinner that evening.
“Okay, fill your glasses~ and celebrate Professor Baek Ui-sin’s return!”
“Congratulations!”
“Welcome, Professor!”
Mr. Ahn Gyeong-sik sent Shin Sang-mi and me out, saying that there shouldn’t be a lack of people at the dinner.
The dinner venue was more modest than expected.
Looking around, there were three or four professors.
Senior professors were unable to attend due to emergency transplant surgery, and there were more fellows than that.
“Hello, Professor.”
“It’s an honor.”
Fellows and residents hold empty glasses and kneel down to Baek Ui-sin and carefully receive the glass.
Each organization has its own customs and formalities for drinking parties.
I haven’t fully adapted yet, but the atmosphere of today’s drinking party is particularly stiff.
Especially because of the existence of Baek Ui-sin.
“They live so tiredly. Why are you running around? If you came to eat, just eat.”
Professor Baek Ui-sin didn’t seem to care about trivial etiquette.
Of course, that doesn’t mean that anyone was rude to Professor Baek Ui-sin.
I could feel a charisma that was hard to approach.
As everyone’s turn seemed to have come, Shin Sang-mi and I, the youngest members of the Department of Thoracic Surgery, held our glasses together and headed to Baek Ui-sin.
“Hello, Professor.”
“Ah, geez. Let’s eat.”
Baek Ui-sin glanced at my face as if he was annoyed and said bluntly.
“You haven’t quit yet?”
I don’t know if it’s a joke or serious.
“Yes. I’m Shin Seon-han, a prospective first-year in the Department of Thoracic Surgery.”
“I’m Shin Sang-mi. I respect you, Professor!”
“If you’re prospective first-years, it’s not too late yet. Think about it again.”
I still don’t know if it’s a joke or serious.
Professor Baek Ui-sin had drunk quite a bit of alcohol, but his complexion hadn’t changed at all.
Shin Sang-mi, who is confident in her sociability, quickly went into polite mode after realizing that her bright voice was not working.
“Oh my, thinking about it again. I’ll learn a lot from you in the future.”
We received the glasses as everyone else had done before.
At that time, the bottle slipped from Professor Baek Ui-sin’s hand.
Clang!
It fell on the table and rolled to the floor, breaking.
Everyone was surprised by the sudden loud noise and looked this way.
