Buying a Deserted Island (2)
Ta-da-da-da-da!
I’m on a helicopter.
It’s my first time riding one.
True to H Group’s reputation, the helicopter, which departed from Chu Won-po, was heading west at high speed, crossing the Korean Peninsula.
Soo-jung was glued to the window, looking down at the Korean Peninsula, and my wife was feeding Soo-ah formula.
Soo-jung’s influence was significant in bringing the family together.
She wanted to see the deserted island we were buying. Although the weather was chilly, the island had a base camp, and the helicopter was warm, so I agreed.
In the distance, Yeongjong Island appeared, and not far from there was a fairly large island.
As the head of the department said, it looked like tens of thousands of square feet, and a harbor was faintly visible.
A road was built around the outskirts of the deserted island, and there was a base camp in the harbor, but otherwise, it was like a primeval forest.
“That’s it.”
“Such a vast area with a harbor. I don’t know if it’s okay to give it to us for 2 billion won.”
“The harbor and road construction didn’t cost just 2 billion won.”
“You’ve made a huge decision.”
“It’s proof that the Chairman is keeping an eye on you. Of course, we’re not just giving things away to you. H Group has benefited quite a bit from this. You could call it a windfall.”
“Is it because of the advertising effect?”
“Hahaha, that’s right. Thanks to you, we were able to reduce advertising costs. Converting that into money, we’ve more than made up for the price of the deserted island, so you don’t need to be too grateful.”
“I’m still grateful.”
“By the way, how’s the permit going? I assume you’ve spoken to the President.”
“The Chief of Staff is taking care of it.”
“In what way?”
“He said he’d talk to the Mayor of Incheon.”
“Oh, so he’s returning the favor.”
“Favor?”
“His political standing has risen, hasn’t it?”
The Lee Soon-shin Project was causing the President’s approval rating to skyrocket.
Due to the aftermath of Brexit [Britain’s exit from the European Union], the economy was sluggish, and the government implemented various stimulus measures, but they had little effect.
As a result, the national approval rating was falling day after day, but the Lee Soon-shin Project succeeded in reversing the trend.
Not only did it rebound, but the approval rating was soaring, so from the President’s point of view, I was nothing short of a savior.
Granting a permit to such a savior is not a difficult task.
Since H Group was already on the verge of developing a tourist destination through countless lobbying efforts, converting it into a kimchi factory was an easy task.
Suddenly, Han Cheol-soo spoke as if he didn’t understand.
“But why a kimchi factory on a deserted island? You have to consider the logistics costs.”
“We plan to grow crops and make salted seafood on the deserted island. Of course, we’ll also make salt to produce finished products.”
“You’re going to produce all the ingredients and make finished products?”
“That’s right.”
“That won’t be easy. It will require an unimaginable amount of money to build a foundation with such enormous labor costs.”
“Well, we have to earn the money.”
“Hahaha. Your intentions are truly noble. I can see your determination to continue the family business no matter what. That’s why the Chairman thinks so highly of you.”
Han Cheol-soo’s prediction was completely wrong.
The reason for going to the deserted island was to use the skeletons 24 hours a day.
The cost that accounts for the largest proportion in modern society is labor costs. No matter what you do, the unit price is bound to rise in this era of high wages.
If we assume that there are no labor costs at all, there is no business that generates more profit than this.
The helicopter arrived over the deserted island and circled around.
It slowly circled the deserted island so that the entire view could be seen at a glance.
There was a fairly high mountain in the center of the deserted island, and the surrounding area was gentle. There were also plains and water sources everywhere.
“The most important thing on a deserted island is the presence of a water source. Fortunately, this island, Beomdo, has a water source. There’s also groundwater flowing. We’ve developed the groundwater, so all you have to do is connect the water supply.”
“I’m very grateful.”
“I just hope you succeed.”
“I will.”
It would be strange if I didn’t succeed in making them work without pay.
The taste of kimchi has already been verified, so if we can solve the logistics, we can build a perfect system.
Of course, there’s still a long way to go.
H Group had built some convenience facilities, but Beomdo was still close to a primeval forest.
The helicopter lands at the base camp.
The base camp wasn’t grand; it was just a few containers brought in.
As soon as I got off the deserted island, a sharp, cold wind slapped my face.
Whoosh!
“Ugh! It’s cold!”
“Let’s go inside quickly. The cold wind isn’t good for the baby.”
“Yes, Director.”
I go inside the container and turn on the kerosene heater.
Soon, the container became warm.
As I sat on the hard chair, the director personally made me a cup of instant coffee.
As I warmed myself with a cup of coffee, the director handed me a file.
“This contains the information that has been investigated so far. It includes the ground survey, development plan, and what has been developed so far.”
“Oh, thank you. I needed it.”
“Shall we draw up the contract then?”
“Here?”
“The Chairman instructed us to complete the contract as soon as possible.”
“If you do that for me, I’ll be grateful.”
As expected, it’s happening quickly.
I quickly scanned the contract to look for any potential problems, but the contract was written unilaterally in my favor.
To give me such a deserted island for 2 billion won.
It would have been absolutely impossible without Chairman Lee Kang-no’s favor.
I immediately sign the contract.
Scribble.
Director Han Cheol-soo also signed on behalf of the group, and we exchanged copies of the contract.
“We’ll take care of things on our end. We have to register it and do all sorts of complicated things.”
“I’d be grateful if you would.”
“I hope you succeed.”
“I will definitely succeed and repay you.”
“Hahaha! There’s no need for repayment. I’m just curious to see how much you grow.”
I wanted to walk around the deserted island, but it’s impossible today.
My wife, Soo-ah, and Soo-jung came with me, and a fierce, cold wind was blowing, so I think I should come with my family in the spring.
Of course, I was planning to release the skeletons before that to continue developing the deserted island.
“Okay, let’s go back.”
That evening.
I came home and had a party.
The party wasn’t grand; it was just celebrating today’s achievements with high-quality Korean beef and wine.
As my wife and I were about to clink wine glasses, Soo-jung insisted on joining in.
“Me too! I want to do it too!”
Soo-jung already had grape juice ready.
When the wine glass was filled with grape juice, it looked like it was filled with wine.
My wife smiled and said.
“You’ve worked hard so far.”
“Dad, you’ve worked hard!”
“Thank you, everyone.”
Clink!
The glasses clink in the air.
It’s nothing new, but it’s deeply moving.
At this point, I’ve established a foundation. I’ve finished preparing to launch a big business.
Starting tomorrow, skeletons will be deployed to the deserted island, and salt farms, factories, ground leveling, and road construction will take place.
However, I need to increase my level to summon more undead… I’ll think about that slowly.
I paid 2 billion won out of 3.3 billion won, leaving me with 1.3 billion won.
I don’t know how much it will cost to develop the deserted island, but I think it will cost at least several billion won. That’s assuming I don’t have to pay labor costs.
Since I couldn’t pour a lot of money into it right away, I handed my wife a bankbook with 600 million won in it.
“What’s this?”
“Open it.”
“No, this is so much money…”
“Look for an apartment in Yeongjong Island starting tomorrow. You should be able to buy a nice place for about 500 million won. Use the rest to buy things you need for the apartment.”
“Can I accept this much money?”
It hadn’t been long since we moved here.
But suddenly, I was trying to move to a new apartment, so it was natural for my wife to be surprised. The rate of development was enormous.
In fact, I didn’t think I would settle down this quickly.
It became possible by successfully completing the Lee Soon-shin Project.
“Why do you think I’m making money?”
“To get back on your feet.”
“Why are you getting back on your feet?”
My wife smiled.
Yes, that smile.
One of the reasons I work is to see my wife’s happy smile. Of course, I don’t think I can buy that smile with money. Even so, I knew from experience that it was painful to be without money.
“I’m making money to make my family comfortable. So, let’s move.”
“I’ll follow your wishes.”
It’s a job I started for my family.
I was determined to get out of poverty, even if it meant selling my soul to the devil. I could have invested all that money in the business, but if I did, it would be a business for the sake of business, not a business for the sake of my family.
My wife knew that too.
“Okay, let’s eat.”
I ate until I was full and left the house with Soo-jung to go to the convenience store.
I bought everything else, but I didn’t buy dessert.
I was going out to buy some ice cream and cider.
Soo-jung pats her full stomach.
“Wow, I’m so full. Right?”
“You have to eat a lot to grow up.”
“Dad, I have a question.”
“What is it?”
“I felt like I needed a lot of money when I saw the deserted island today. It seems like it would cost an unimaginable amount of money to develop even a part of that land.”
“Hmm… I didn’t think the scale would get this big either.”
I was also thinking of starting small.
Before starting the Lee Soon-shin Project, I was planning to go to my own island, Udo, cut down trees myself, build a factory, and slowly promote the business.
But after successfully completing the Lee Soon-shin Project, I received a huge deserted island with the help of H Group and the Blue House [the executive office of the President of South Korea].
The deserted island was close to Yeongjong Island, and it took less than 30 minutes to commute from there.
If it’s a deserted island with these conditions, I have to develop it with all my heart.
I have to build salt farms, salted seafood factories, kimchi factories, and farms to utilize the entire island. To do that, it seemed certain that a huge amount of capital would be invested.
Soo-jung said in a confident tone.
“I think it’s time for a new business.”
